Connecting a seperate blu ray player to a blu ray/surround sound combo?

Havenwood

I bought a 3D blu ray player and I'm currently using a blu ray/surround sound. I'm wanting to connect the new blu ray up and still use the surround sound from the combo. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Answer
Your home theater in a box is not flexible for adding anything or for upgrading. It is mainly designed for you to watch a movie with the built in blu ray disc player with surround sound. They are a waste of money. Keep in mind, to watch in 3D you also need a 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc movie (at this time there are only around 140 titles available and they are mainly animated movie from disney) and you also need a 3D glasses. I would recommend you look at an Onkyo HT-S3500 to replace your home theater in a box. It is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You would connect your 3D blu ray disc player to the Onkyo and then connect the Onkyo to the tv. Demo the unit at any Fry's Electronic. It retails for around $300. If you purchase a 3D blu ray disc player, I hope you purchased a Panasonic brand. It is one of the most reliable player in the market with good reviews from Home Theater Magazine. Hope this will help you out.

Can you hook up a Blu Ray player to a Panasonic surround sound system?

Q. I'm interested in buying a Blu Ray player, but I don't want to buy a new surround sound system.
I forgot to mention that the surround sound system has a DVD player built into it.

Answer
Some entry level surround systems have few or even no audio inputs. If you want 5.1 surround, then your surround receiver would need to have an optical (or coaxial) digital audio input (and the Blu-ray player would need an audio output to match, either optical or digital).

If your surround receiver has stereo audio inputs (red and white color coded RCA inputs), then you could connect the Blu-ray player that way, but this would be 2.0 stereo, and not 5.1 surround.

If you can get the audio connected to the surround system, I am guessing you would still connect the Blu-ray player's video output directly to the TV, because your receiver probably has no video input, or at least no HD video input.

Surround sound for PS3 Blu-Ray player?

Istvan K

If I use the AV cable that came with the PS3 (one end is RCA component and the other is the flat AV that goes into the PS3), and plug it into the composite in (red & white) in my Panasonic SA-PT950 5.1 surround sound system, and set it to AUX, will I get the surround sound from the Blu Ray disc?

I realize I cannot get the BluRay 7.1 DTS that way.... but will I get any acceptable surround sound out of it, at least better than just having the audio come through the TV?

-My TV has no Audio Out and the Panasonic does not have an Optic port, so I'm thinking this is my last and final option for surround sound when playing BluRay off the PS3.

any answers?

Answer
No, you can't get surround from anything but the built in DVD player. The only audio inputs you have are the analog RCA inputs (red/white) you mentioned, and that is a stereo input. There is no surround decoding from a stereo analog input, just the left and right channels. It will still be better sound than you get from your TV speakers though.

The one thing you can do with your Panasonic surround system is fake surround, using the Dolby Pro Logic II setting. While not true surround sound, using the discrete audio channels encoded on the blu-ray disc, it will create a quasi surround mix, using phase variations withing the stereo mix, and making its best guess which channel the audio should go to. It's a far from ideal solution, and may not be to your liking, but give it a try.

The only way you can get a true surround signal from your blu-ray player would be to get a receiver or home theater system with an HDMI or optical/coaxial digital input.

How do I get true 5.1 surround sound out of an optical audio cable?

Before you answer you have to look at my setup first..

Audio/video sources: directv receiver, ps3, seperate Samsung blu ray player.
Sending those signals to tv via hdmi.

Samsung HDTV with 3 hdmi inputs. No hdmi outputs and 1 optical output.

Audio surround sound amplifier: 5.1 channel Panasonic SC-PT760. 1 hdmi output. 1 optical input. NO hdmi input.

Sending audio to this via optical output from tv to optical input to 5.1 receiver.

My surround sound system is a Panasonic sc-pt760. It does not have an hdmi input. So to get my "surround sound" I have hooked up a clear colored Philips Optical cable and the tv sends all audio to my Panasonic surround sound receiver to its optical input. This way I don't have to switch audio inputs. Whatever the tv plays the receiver plays.

My question is how do I get true 5.1 surround sound? Because when I switch the Panasonic surround sound receiver off of Dolby pro logic 2 setting, the rear left and right surround sound speakers don't have any sound suggesting the only reason they had sound was because when Dolby pro logic 2 was on it was converting 2 channel stereo audio to fake 5.1 audio.

So does that mean the tv can't output 5.1 through it's optical output? I don't know how to get true 5.1 to my receiver without a lot of plugging in and unplugging when I'm using that source.

Please only qualified individuals answer. I don't want opinions. I just want somebody who either does this for a living or really knows their stuff. Thanks in advance. :)

Answer
I would like to apologize to you for those who keep reminding you the HT in a box are no good.
In tough times like today, not a lot of people could afford to just ditch their HT in a box, and get a new system. Jeeeezz!

Keep in mind that not all TV channels broadcasts in 5.1. Most DVD & Blu-rays do.

That's why the system has that DPL2 is to simulate those not true 5.1 audio signals.

No matter how expensive you pro system, like these folks keep recommending, it will not play true 5.1 audio if the source media was not recorded in 5.1.

Panasonic is a very respectable brand, they would not falsely indicate that your system will play 5.1 audio if it really does not.

Any picture quality loss connecting via audio receiver?

Sarah

I am going to be purchasing a Yamaha 5.1 surround sound system. I have a Blu-Ray player, Apple TV and cable box that will all connect to it. I understand these all connect to the receiver and then the receiver connects to the TV.

My question is this - is there any picture quality loss by going through the receiver?

Answer
The more connections you have the greater chance of signal loss, but to be honest you probably wouldn't notice it.

I have a blu ray dvd player and would like to buy 5.1 surround sound speakers to go with it. Will it be equipped with decoder to support 5.1 surround sound speakers or not.

Answer
Not directly. You will need the speakers and some type of surround amplifier/receiver ... not just the speakers. That said, all Blu-ray players have built in 5.1 dolby digital decoders (and many have advanced decoders for 7.1 formats increasingly used on Blu-ray (but not DVD) disks).
