Jason

I have a 3d tv that doesn't do 2d to 3d conversion....I was wondering if I got a 3d blu ray player that does if I watched netflix on it that I'll be able to watch netflix in 3d?

Answer
C-Net tried it and they say it's pretty terrible. The 2D to 3D conversion method described above won't work with streaming content like Netflix, but technically, yes, it will convert it - just not very well.

Is it possible for me to watch 3D effect even without using a 3D Blu-Ray player?

Veronica K

I desire to buy a LG 3D HDTV and the Blu-ray player at once but due to the limited cash found on me, Iâm wondering if I can watch 3D effect with using the a 3D BLU-ray player? Help please.

Answer
Sure! In fact, the LG Cinema 3D and the LG LW series types have a 2D to 3D conversion. As a matter of fact, they all look pretty wonderful. Nevertheless, if youâre interested in a 1080p 3D, then you will have to settle for a Blu-ray player.

My Samsung BD 1250 Blu-Ray player claims it has all of the available firmware updates. So it should be top of the line, right? But it still won't play my Blu-Ray version of Avatar. Help!

Answer
The movie just came out and the manufacturer probably has not updated their firmware updates yet.

How do I get a Wireless LAN adapter to work with my Samsung Blu-Ray player?

aa_man033

I bought one off ebay, but when I plug it in and select wireless on the Blu-Ray player it says, please insert the Samsung LAN adapter. Mine isn't Samsung, but would it matter?

Answer
Should work, I guess.

I got my Samsung player to do a firmware update by using my laptop as a proxy. I forget how exactly, probably an ethernet crossover cable and running Wireshark to figure out what it needed. I certainly didn't have any other Samsung device. It didn't seem worth the bother, frankly, but I only have an NTSC TV and limited interest in Facebook and whatever other captive features the player offers. The USB port on the other hand is useful for playing ripped DVDs and movies from video cameras etc.

Can the yamaha AVR 463 handle HDMI Audio Input?

Stephan K

Well the Question about says it all. I wonder if I connect a Blu Ray Player to the Yamaha AVR 463, and set it to PCM, will the Receiver be able to play it when I just connect it via HDMI?

Answer
Yes, as specified on page 14 of the Yamaha 463 manual. This receiver can handle Multi-channel Linear PCM input.

http://media.onecall.com/Image_Products/Yamaha/RX-V463_U.pdf

It will not decode HD audio formats however as you seem to realize. No loss though provided your player is capable of decoding them to PCM as you mentioned.

Kawazaki

The thing is I bought a Blu-ray drive for my laptop but I can't play BD discs in WMP so I'm looking for a third party freeware to play BD discs.

10 points for best answer.

Answer
If you bought a Blu-Ray drive it should have come with a CD/DVD disk that will install the necessary codecs to play Blu-Ray on the computer including WMP.

You may need to use the player that came on the disk rather than WMP if it did not contain the correct codec. The codec must match the make and model of the Blu-Ray drive and the operating system of the computer.

I would start at the website of the maker of your Blu-Ray drive.

Which is the best software to decode and shrink?

Answer
How to Copy Encrypted or Copy-Protected DVD

Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc (DVD) is quite commonly used nowadays due to its huge storage advantage. However, most commercially produced DVDs are always protected with the Content Scramble System (CSS), a digital rights management scheme that is widely used. Manufacturers or producers use CSS keys set which is a collective term for authentication key, player key, title key, disc key, second disk key set, and/or encrypted key to protect the discâs content from being duplicated by unauthorized parties. What can you do if you want to copy or make duplications of a protected DVD?

Technically, you can seek help from some freeware and shareware available that can help to solve your problem to copy a protected DVD.

DVD43

You can try out DVD43. DVD43 is a free decrypter or CSS encryption breaking program that can help you to duplicate copy-protected DVDs. i have used it to copy DVD movies and it works well. The installation program is pretty simple: just run the setup file and leave the shortcut icon on your task bar. This program will run in the background and decrypt movies on the fly. When you want to use it, you just insert the DVD which you want to copy and wait for DVD43 to detect it. After that you can start duplicating the DVD with your DVD copy software.

Pavtube DVD Copy

It is an easy to use and powerful DVD copy tool. The program makes it possible to copy DVD to DVD with excellent DVD copying quality.
it is very easy for beginner!! see the main interface.

With Pavtube DVD Copy, you own the most efficient way to create backup copies of your DVD movie collection. These working copies allow you to play your DVDs on home and computer DVD players every day without the inevitable risk of getting your originals scratched or damaged. You get disc protection with no loss of playback quality.

The program contains functions of DVD burner. So it can not only copy DVD movie to ISO file or DVD folder and backup DVD to hard disk drive, but also burn ISO file and DVD folder to DVDs.

DVD Shrink

DVD Shrink is a useful program to back up DVD discs. This freeware can also be used in conjunction with a DVD burning software such as Nero to make copies of the DVD video disc. This software supports Windows 9x/2000/XP. DVD Shrink operates in quite a similar way to DVD43 and other decrypter programs.

DVD Decrypter
This is another software that can be used to decrypt copy-protected DVD. Besides, DVD Decrypter can also record images to disc. The software is free and the new release DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0 is free for downloading.
Click here to download:http://www.vgmcentral.com/dvddecrypter/index.htm

DVDFab HD

DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab Platinum. It copies entire DVD movie to hard disk, and removes all the protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying. It also comes with full HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support (Removes AACS).

SmartRipper

SmartRipper is a DVD VOB file extractor (so called "DVD ripper"). The program is loaded with nice features like per-chapter splitting of VOB files, angle processing, etc. It also displays statistics such as length, size, and max/min/average bitrate for every chapter and active selection.

The only Problems someone might have with it is Ripping a DVD with one of the Newer Bad Sector Copy protections because this Program only supports Breaking CSS Encryption but becides that it is Great and it is the Only ripper I have used were I can Rip a DVD as a Single M2V Video file and an AC3 audio file or as Just a single Vob file with Just the streams in it you want.....

How can I stop my blu ray disc from pausing and not working?

Dwane

I bought a blu ray player from Walmart a month ago. I watch blu rays and DVDs on it all the time with no problem. But, on a particular blu ray ( Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 :-), the disc and player freeze and I can't do anything but turn it off. It's not like the disc is scratched because it is new. I was able to watch it with no problems on my friend's blu ray. What's up?

Answer
It has to do with the color of the discs and the laser type in you player. This is a common problem with the lesser expensive players, they do not always play everything. I bet your friend has a better quality player and that is why it plays there. Take yours back, get a refund and purchase better unit.

Also is there an blu ray player available on the market that would work on my old model HDTV that wouldn't hurt the pixels on the screen?

Answer
The second switch claims to be HD compatible.

You also need to take care to buy HD rated component cables. Most of the $25 component cables are designed for standard def frequencies. Try www.bluejeanscables.com.

(You can use the cheap cables and it will appear to work but there might be some slight loss of fine-focus details and solid colors may swirl. It wont damage anything but the image quality).

Why would you think a BluRay player would 'hurt' your HDTV? Something is strange about your concern.

Also - does the Wii offer component outputs? I thought it was Composite output only?

Most of the cheap bluray players do NOT have component outputs. Sony players in particular will not output 1080p on component jacks to annoy pirates. Look at Panasonic and Samsung players.

I just searched on Amazon for "blu ray player component output" and found a bunch. None of them are the $60 budget models, but they do offer component outputs.

Then the remote processes the audio then sends it to the device ( like xbox /ps3 /wifienabled blu ray player ) .Just wanted some feedback on this idea.

Thanks

No, I'd rather have a remote with a qwerty keyboard.

How can I play internet radio (Slacker, etc.), from my cell to my home stereo system? My stereo has a USB port?

pullagrav

My phone: Samsung Galaxy S 3

I have a stereo system with large speakers, an audio/visual control center which contains FM radio and all that jazz, and a Sony 5 disc cd changer attached. The Sony cd player has the USB port, but when I connect my phone to it, NO DICE. CD player reads "not supported." You'd think my SG3 with the latest version of Android OS would be able to handle this seemingly easy task...

The entire setup includes the control center, cd player, blu ray player, direct TV box, and of course a TV and the speakers for the radio/CDs. You'd think with all of this technology i'd be able to play Slacker or Pandora through that system and my speakers. Any help? I've had zero luck thus far with lots of research.

Answer
You user the headphone jack from the phone attached to aux in on the stereo either RCA in or Mini 3.5 jack in; you also need the appropriate cord in order to do this.....

What is a good and reliable blu ray player?

timster799

I would like to a recommendation on a good blu ray player. Should I get a standalone player and buy a Playstation 3 because of their reliability. Any recommendations is appreciated. It will be connected to a HDTV 1080p hi def TV.
I meant to say -- should I get a standalone player OR instead a Playstation 3. Thanks.

Answer
As of right now the PS3 is the best choice....WHY?

Well right now the PS3 is one of the most reliable, durable and cheapest blu-ray plaer on the market today. THe PS3 is also the very few blu-ray players that can updates its firmware to the latest profile.

With this $399 price you get a blu-ray player and an ultimate game console which plays high def games, free online gameplay and can even install Yellwo Dog Linux operating system on the PS3 to use as a computer operating system...

So unless some company company comes out with a stand alone blu-ray player less than $200 or $300 the PS3 is your best choice.

How does Blu-ray player upconverting work?

Darkman

i saw a few Blu-ray players in the store today that said:

Upconverts DVDs to 1080p

Well, if I buy a blu-ray player and it upconverts my old dvds to 1080p, why would I every buy the higher priced blu-ray discs???

Do blu-ray discs go beyond 1080p???

man, sometimes this stuff is confusing.

Answer
It is confusing, and the ads don't help since they MAY not lie, but can be misleading to consumers.

First point .. Blu-ray is native 1920x1080p ... the same as the maximum resolution consumer HDTVs (so called "True HD" ... a misnomer since 720p is also HD).

Now, why buy higher priced Blu-ray disks and not just watch DVDs?

It might help to consider that a DVD is native 720x480 pixels (NTSC). To upconvert that to fit a "True HD" 1920x1080 pixel display, the number of distinct dots (each defined as a specific colour) has to be increased by 2.25x vertically and 2.67x horizontally. Upconversion, processes the information in adjacent dots in the original image to fill in the dots on the higher resolution display (or in even more sophisticated processors even incorporate information from adjacent frames). The quality of the result is dependent on the sophistication of the video processing ... done well the result is a noticeable improvement on the original, but done poorly and the result can be worse. In all cases the DVD image is technically now a 1920x1080 pixel image, BUT no matter how well processed it can't ever provide as detailed an image as a native Blu-ray image. You can't get something from nothing.

The question for most consumers is whether a Blu-ray disk is worth the premium cost relative to DVD. The answer is unfortunately not easy since all sorts of variables are involved.

For example, are you watching on a 720p or 1080p display? If the former, well upconverted DVDs will look quite close to a Blu-ray movie downsampled to 720p. Or, is the Blu-ray disk a good remaster of the original high quality film, or simply a Blu-ray reissue of the original DVD master (in which case it may be little better than the DVD at best). Or, is the screen large enough and are you watching close enough to be able to appreciate the increased detail in a Blu-ray disk. Finally, is it worth a premium price to watch a drama or comedy where the visual detail isn't that important (vs a visual spectacle type Sci-Fi movie for example)

So, the long answer to your question is Blu-ray is, and will remain, more expensive than DVD. Blu-ray will always provide at least some improvement visually and audio wise over DVD. Whether it's worth the extra cost for Blu-ray then becomes a personal decision on a benefit-cost basis.

In general many consumers have concluded that at current price differentials DVD is good enough, but as the price difference decreases this may change. My recommendation is to evaluate for yourself based on your equipment and viewing conditions by comparing several movies on both Blu-ray and DVD ... then act accordingly.

Hope that helps.

Answer
You would need a graphic card that supports hi def. If you have one then you simply need a media player such as VLC media player. Most major media players support high def (Quicktime especially)

Does the new Macbook can play a downloaded movie in Blu-Ray in 1080p?

Rh3in

I'm downloading a Movie in Blu-Ray 1080p and I wanted to know if my macbook can support that and play it.

Answer
I'm assuming you are downloading it from a torrent site. The file is probably a avi or rar, which means you will need some stuff to get it to play: Xvid, Divx, Perian, VLC Player and UnRar. The first 3 have all sorts of plug-ins for quicktime to play AVI. VLC is a player that is very helpful when Quicktime can't open a file. UnRar turns Rar files into playable files. If you get spotty graphics on Quicktime and VLC, try Plex.

Your macbook doesn't have 1080p resolution. You could hook it up to an external display that supports 1080p if your graphics card supports 1080p.

I would not do this if you have a 2006 or 2007 without checking with someone more knowledgeable than me first. The 2006 and 2007 models have GMA 950 graphics cards and they have had some problems. So, I might be afraid of it blowing out the graphics card. Apple has extended the warranty on the those graphics cards because of the issues.

Next time save yourself the extra problems and download stuff in standard def.

I want a blu-ray player that allows you to see more than just your "instant queue". On my xbox 360, ps3 and Wii I can browse categories, but do any of the standard blu-ray players do it? It's for someone else, and they don't want to buy a gaming system to do it.

Answer
Some of the Insignia Blu-ray Live players support this feature as well as the LG BD550, BD570, and BD590 players. Insignia is a Best Buy in-store brand.

These players allow you to browse categories for instant watch titles without having the titles in your queue. The top 100 titles in 20 or so genres are shown.

My new blu ray player didn't have a manual with it to explain anything, and I know nothing about blu ray players. It has Netflix and VUDU on it, but I want to download Hulu plus and Amazon digital download so I can sign in on those accounts on the blu ray player and stream via the TV and not via my Kindle Fire. In general services are hard encoded through firmware. Unless LG decides to add Hulu you are probably out of luck. But check the manual ... see the link and download a copy.

What Blu Ray players are compatible with DVDs?

Stark

I'm wanting to purchase a Blu Ray player, but don't want to get rid of my DVDs. Is there a player that can play both formats?

Answer
All of them will.

And most of them will do the up-conversion in the player if you hook up with HDMI cables. This tends to give you a slightly better picture than if you let the HDTV do the conversion.

My advice: Go to www.bestblueraydeals.com for discounted prices from Amazon merchants.

Get your HDMI cables by searching Amazon for "Media Bridge". These run $9-$20 each

Now - there are some options with BluRay:

* Basic players
* Players with optional $90 dongles to make them wireless
* Players with wireless and apps like Netflix/Hulu
* Players that support 3D

My Panasonic has 8 apps (Netflix, etc.)

For $99 I bought a Western Digital TV Live box that has 28 apps and lets me plug in a flash drive or USB hard drive and can play most computer video files.

I suggest you get a basic BluRay player and not spend the extra for Wireless or Apps. Buy one of the dedicated "Media Servers" like the WD unit, Roku, etc. for your streaming needs. The Media Servers tend to have more options, get updated more frequently and ... let you play computer files.

Some BluRay players do have a USB jack and claim to play computer video files - but they only play a few file types if they are created in the right resolution and most of the players or televisions will NOT play from a USB hard drive. The little Media Servers do a much better job. (Some people rip their entire DVD library to a USB hard drive - then just use that rather than disks.)

Hope this helps.

i'm looking into getting a new sony lcd WITHOUT the 120hz option. i noticed that the sony lcd im looking at ( KDL-40S4100) has a 24p input option with blu-ray. does this mean that since it has a 24p input option with the blu-ray player that the need for a 120hz lcd is pointless? i understand the need for the 3:2 pulldown when you have a 60hz tv trying to display 24fps film. im just a little confused about this option with blu-ray. if this is the case, does this hold true for upconverted dvd's or is that where the need for 120hz lcd's comes in to play. thanks!!!

Answer
There are two advantages to the 120Hz:

1) Uniform motion of objects in the picture is much smoother, eliminating "trails". This is true for both video (60Hz) and film (24Hz) sources. This is a result of the interpolation of the extra frame from 60Hz sources. (For 24Hz sources, see below.)

2) if the set accepts 24p input, that works out to exactly 5 120Hz frames per one 24Hz movie frame, and that eliminates "judder". Judder comes from the fact that to convert 24Hz to 60Hz, one 24Hz frame produces 3 60Hz frames and the next will produce only 2 60Hz frames (3-2 pulldown). This uneven duration of display time causes non-uniform motion display. In addition, the 5 120Hz frames generated from the 24Hz frames are "interpolated" so that film "jitter" (the jerky display because of the slow frame rate) is reduced greatly.

In summary, if you are getting blu-ray, especially if you plan to watch a lot of film-originated material. 120Hz is the way to go.

The 24Hz output of a DVD player, both blu-ray and standard, can be a perfect replica of the original motion picture frame sequence. This is because the frames are "flagged" when recorded on the DVD, so it is possible for the circuitry to identify which frame to output at 24Hz and not output identical frames in sequence. So the 24hz benefits apply to both upconverted standard and blu-ray DVDs (played on a blu-ray player).

blu ray player software for mac image

kingoftown

I have a PC, a Router, and a wireless Blu Ray player attached to my TV and router.

I downloaded software called VLC player, thinking I could use it to stream my desktop to the TV via the Blu Ray player. (I can stream stuff to it similar to a PS3) Its interface is somewhat cryptic, though.

I have no problem streaming media files, but how do I stream a live desktop?

Whats the difference in quality between an expensive and an inexpensive Blu-Ray player?

Sometimes you see one for $200 and another times you'll see one for $600. So how big is the difference in image quality. Do artifacts show up in the cheaper ones, I don't understand what the difference would be.

Answer
In terms of watching a movie, the player isn't that important ... in essence it's a transport mechanism. While some more expensive players support features that may improve the image quality slightly (e.g. the ability to output 24 fps 1080p video) in general all will provide excellent quality from a Blu-ray disk.

Differences are mainly in support for additional features, some of which are functional and some of which are only important in how movie extras are handled (e.g. internet connectivity for 'in movie experiences / on-line chat) -- many of which may not be important to many users.

Some of the more expensive players have built in support for advanced audio formats that cheaper/more basic players don't. Then there are some with 7.1 analog outputs for uncompressed audio. Higher price may buy the ability to stream HD movies, handle extra fomats (e.g. Divx), support on board memory (useful for JPEG viewing, etc), Internet connectivity, etc. Build quality and the quality of components (e.g. video processor (which can impact the players ability to scale DVDs and/or scale Blu-ray to lower resolution), DACs, circuit boards, power supply) is generally higher with the more expensive. Finally, some manufacturuers simply play on the cachet of their name to justify higher prices.

Read the specs on players carefully and differences become clear.

What is the best HD DVD player that will upgrade to 1080i and will accept Blue Ray as well?

Dolly

Also want the best sound quality as well. I went to consumers reports site and still cannot get the answer I want. I do know about the Denon reciever with the DVD in it that upgrades but never said anything about Blue Ray, I really don't want to buy a new reciever because I have the onyko. Thanks to all that answer.

Answer
All HD-DVD players currently support 1080i output. Some support 1080p, some do not... don't expect upgrades to change a 1080i player into a 1080p player.

No HD-DVD player will support Blu-Ray discs, now or in the future. What you want here is a combination player, or whatever you want to call it. To date, there have been three of these, all from traditional Blu-Ray companies.

The first was the LG BH100. This came out in early 2007, and it's basically a full featured Blu-Ray player that will also kinda-sorta play HD-DVDs, but won't support all of the HD-DVD features.

This has since been replaced by the LG "SuperBlu" BH200, which claims to be a fully functional HD-DVD player, as well as the usual Blu Ray stuff. This one does 1080p and has a 5.1 analog output, decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, and DTS-HD.... it better, it costs about $1000.

The third is the BD-UP5000 from Samsung. It's not quite out yet, and it should be similarly priced. See here

As for sound quality.. well, ideally, you have a digital cable from the disc player to your receiver, and so the audio quality of the player itself is moot. Of course, as you're saying, the new audio formats in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will require a new receiver, if you want this digital decoding in your receiver. The first BD and HD-DVD players have onboard decoding of at least some of the standard formats... you can run cables into your receiver's 5.1 or 7.1 input from these. At that point, the quality and the specific formats the BD/HD-DVD player decodes will matter.... I haven't even followed all that, since there's so much chaos out there.

One thing to note: all "plain" HD-DVD players currently come from Toshiba. Other than the cheap HD-DVDs coming Real Soon Now from China, they make all of the HD-DVD players. So if you're not happy with Toshiba's quality, you may be out of luck. On the Blu-Ray side, Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Denon, Pioneer, Sharp, Lite-On, Mitsubishi, Funai, JVC, Loewe, Daewoo, and others are making Blu-Ray players. So there's more variety.

I certainly hope that "Universal" players catch on.. that may be the only way out of this format war. You can expect Toshiba and Sony to be the last folks anywhere to make such players, and probably awhile for the Chinese, too, since this adds cost. So you need to watch the rest of the current "Blu-Ray" folks, to see if this catches on or not.

Software upgrades are nothing terribly new. The Denon DVD-3800 allows them, but it's clumsy.. you have to copy the upgrade files onto an SD card. All HD-DVD players supposedly have ethernet (it's a requirement), as will a class of Blu-Ray players, making updates easier. My own IOData AVeL Linkplayer2 (a high-def red laser player) has had an ethernet connection and update web function for over three years now. It's really crazy to make any digital device these days without some firmware update feature. But no software update is going to turn an HD-DVD player into a Blu-Ray combo player.. you need new drive electronics for that.
