I'm looking for a blu-ray DVD player that I can attach a external hard drive to. I want to be able to download movies from my computer to the external hard drive an be able to watch it on my HD 1080p TV. Not just movies I want to be able to listen to music as well.

Answer
Some of the BluRay players are 'smart' and will play a few file formats from a USB drive.

But most televisions and BluRay players will NOT work with a USB hard drive.

If you want to do this - get a media server. Look at the Western Digital TV Live box. This thing WILL work with USB hard drives, gives you 20+ apps for YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, etc. It will also work wirelessly from your PC. The WD box plays most file formats include .MP3's.

A cheaper version is the Roku2 units for about $60, but it does not play as many file formats.

Hope this helps.

How do I get my External Hard Drive to work on my Blu Ray Player?

AZ Stereos

I have a 300GB Western Digital External Hard Drive that I want to connect to my Sony BDP-S185/BX18 Blu Ray player. I have tried formatting in FAT32. The hard drive is externally powered by a hub. Sony tech support says it should work, but I get an error telling me it cannot read it. Any help would be great Thanks.

we have an acer x1130p projector and some websites say that it is 3d compatible but is it the right type of 3d? is there anything i need to get like a special screen or a certain media player? and what movies would work with it.I do have 2 pairs of polarized glass's.

Answer
If the projector is labeled for 3D, then you can view 3D material from a PC when certain Nvidia products are also installed. You would need a compatible Nvidia graphics card installed on your computer, along with the glasses made by Nvidia (your polarized glasses would not work): http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_Main.html .

Someone on the internet wrote that Acer sells two projectors with that same model number, but only one of the models is 3D compatible, so look on the projector or in the manual (or call Acer tech support) before investing in any Nvidia accessories.

Also be aware that the 3D media available with that system is very limited (you aren't going to find "Up" or "Avatar"). The "movies" are more demonstration reels right now: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_3D_Movies.html . I think most people use the system for gaming instead of watching those demos.

The 3D specification for Blu-ray has been finalized, so in the future it may be possible to use that projector to watch feature films in 3D on Blu-ray, but there is no guarantee of that compatibility.

is the ps3 3d upgrade compatible with the panasonic 3d hdtv?

Adonian

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I have a PS3, and it is 3D capable (or will be with software update).
Panasonic gives a pair of glasses with their 3D HDTV's, Samsung doesn't.
WILL the PS3 work in 3D with ANY of the new 3D tv's?
I don't want to pay for the TV AND GLASSES separately, and besides I have seen both Samsung and Panasonic 3D systems, and the Panasonic looks better (and costs $500 less).

Answer
The PS3 will be compatible with all new 3D TVs.

The new 3D specification was a collaborative effort by a group called the Blu-Ray Disc Association which consists of dozens of major electronics manufacturers (e.g. Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.), content producers and industry experts.

What this means is, there is one single finalized 3D standard upon which all companies have agreed upon and implemented so there is no need for consumers to worry about compatibility issues. Every 3D Blu-Ray player, set-top box and game console will work with every 3D TV regardless of the manufacturer.

The BDA 3D spec allows manufacturers to use different types of technologies for producing the 3D effect (e.g. shutter-glasses, polarized lenses, holographic projection etc). But in the end, whatever 3D display you're using, it must be compliant with the specification and accept a standard 3D signal from whatever video source you connect it to.

As a side note, the universal HDMI 1.4 specification also implements new protocols that further extend support for digital 3D video transmission between 1.4/3D compliant devices.

I got this TV http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_012W804958930001P?keyword=012w804958930001&sLevel=0&aff=Y&sid=KAx20061023x272xTier3 and hooked up a Blu-ray disc player via a HDMI cable. When i press input to view the HDMI input, or any input for that matter it displays the Input name in the upper right corner with "480p SD" under it. None of the inputs display as 720p even on HDMIï¼

Answer
You need to go into the blu ray's set up menu, and be sure the output is set to 720p. As for your other items, are they HD or SD things. If they are HD things, again, be sure that their outputs are set to 720p in each of their set up menus.

Maybe its just my area but no one is buying PS3....?

DiMooch

they're in stock in stores (Wii is not) and no one seems to want it. Its pricey, graphics aren't that much better than 360, and no one has blu-ray discs to play on its blu-ray player

Answer
Yeah, all of our local stores walmart, kmart, target, best buy all have these in stock now. I think the main reason they arent moving as well as they were at first is b/c they are really pricey! Plus, they are new, and they still have bugs that need to be worked out of them! The true gamer will always be the first in line for these high tech systems and make the craze, but for the rest of us, I'm sure we have other things to "waste" our money on other than a new gaming system!

mw3051

i need a blu ray player that can of course play blu ray and dvd's, but also can stream stuff like hulu or netflix, and also will let me play movies from a computer on my local area network.

being able to check the weather would be nice too.

any helpful advice is appreciated.

thank you.

Answer
Be careful. The inclusion of streaming apps in televisions and blu ray players is a "add on". I have 8 streaming apps on my Panasonic BluRay player. I have 28 on my WD TV Live box and my WD box has a better interface, gets updated every few weeks, streams from my PC or USB flash and HDD drives.

For $99 it is a much better device and experience. (And yes - it does have a Weather app).

My advice would be you get a good, basic BluRay player, but get your streaming apps from a media server like a Roku unit or the WD TV Live box.

Can I download apps on my LG BP325W blu ray player?

My new blu ray player didn't have a manual with it to explain anything, and I know nothing about blu ray players. It has Netflix and VUDU on it, but I want to download Hulu plus and Amazon digital download so I can sign in on those accounts on the blu ray player and stream via the TV and not via my Kindle Fire. Is this possible?

Answer
In general services are hard encoded through firmware. Unless LG decides to add Hulu you are probably out of luck. But check the manual ... see the link and download a copy.

I have a Samsung BD-D5700 Blu-Ray Player and it has already been upgraded (firmware or software).

I bought the blu-ray movie from Amazon.

All my other blu-ray movies DO NOT DO THIS...I don't know what's up with this one?

It cannot be fake, bootleg, because the movie came with a code for the digital copy.

Answer
the disk is likely defective or has some form of damage, you probably should try it in another player or exchange

I have a Samsung Blu Ray player, BD-P2550, and it keeps freezing or doesnt play disk at all!?

TMontet18

I have updated latest firmware, still not working properly, any suggestions?

Answer
If you have checked your discs to be sure they are free of scratches, then my next guess would be that your spindle is going out. The spindle is the motor that spins the discs. It is usually the first thing to fail on a DVD or Blu Ray player.

Unless it's a very expensive player, you would be better off just getting a new one. You will be charged at least $100 to have it fixed. For another $50 you can buy a new one.

Will I be able to notice the difference on a 24" TV when using a blu ray player?

Ben

I am considering buying a Blu ray player to use on a 24" 1080p TV, my question is will I be able to notice the difference or will it just be a waste of £75?

Answer
Not as simple a question as it sounds.

Quick answer ... Doubtful ... although if you sit close enough (less than 6') and have good eyesight you may see some slight improvement in picture sharpness. You will be getting a bit different colour to DVD too, but without an A/B comparison you probably won't notice.

To provide some data, a study done by Toshiba a few years back showed that about 25% of viewers so NO difference between DVD and Blu-ray of the same movie on identical 40" 1080p HDTVs, and a further ~25% saw slight differences, but not enough to justify the higher cost.

The reality is that Blu-ray CAN be a significant improvement on DVD under the right conditions, but many things can result in it being at best a slight improvement. Some things that bear on the issue: size and resolution of the display, viewing distance, eyesight of the viewer, how the display is connected (HDMI or other), how the DVD is played (good upscaling DVD players CAN give virtually an identical result to Blu-ray under some conditions), quality of the original material and how it was mastered (Some Blu-ray versions of movies are actually poorer than older DVD versions, at least to some viewers).

That all said, Blu-ray players are now relatively cheap, so IF you need a new player (i..e don't have an upscaling DVD player with HDMI output) a Blu-ray player is BOTH an upscaling DVD player and a Blu-ray player. This would be a good choice also if you buy movies and are considering whether to buy Blu-ay of DVD now. On the other hand if you rent movies and have a good DVD player and don't plan to upgrade your TV any time soon don't waste your money.

EDIT: Once again (sigh!) I have to disagree with Grumpy Mac. HD vs SD TV is NOT the same as DVD vs Blu-ray. The former is quite obviously different, while DVD, even on the most basic non-progressive DVD player will still look fairly close to Blu-ray quality on a 24" HDTV.

I am confused. I have a Philips blu ray player with the following audio outputs: Analog audio Left/Right out, HDMI output, Component Video output, Digital coaxial out, Ethernet, Analog audio 5.1 channel out. Can anyone please tell me if I can connect it directly to a 5.1 channel speaker system ? (that is, with out a separate receiver).

Thank you.

Answer
You need to connect it to an amplifier or amplifier/receiver that handles 5.1 Dolby surround. The bluray player only has a pre-amplifier built in and that only supplies enough signal for the amplifier to use to produce the sound. The player itself cannot drive speakers. You don't need anything really fancy.

What use are the built in sound decoders on my blu ray player?

bdiddydawg

Hi i just bought a blu ray player that has built in audio decoders for all the new stuff like DTS-HD etc. How does this work? Can i get those decoders to play through my regular 5.1 system or do i still need a 7.1 reciever to play them? I was looking a receiver with all the HD type decoders on it but do i need them on both the blue ray and the receiver?

Answer
You need either your player OR your receiver to decode the audio formats, but you don't need both. If your receiver doesn't have HDMI 1.3 you'll need your player to decode it. The catch is your player will have to have analog outputs and your receiver will have to have analog inputs. Now you're 5.1 receiver probably has the inputs, but your player probably doesn't have analog outs-most do not. If you list your receiver and player models I can take a look and see if it's possible.

If you're receiver and player don't meet these requirements, you'll need to consider that when buying a receiver. You can find a receiver that will do 7.1 and decode the audio formats internally for about $400+

Should I get my son an xbox 360 or a ps3 for his twelth birthday?

I don't know weather to get my 12 year old son a ps3 or an xbox 360. He says he wants an xbox 360 because all of his frineds have an xbox what do you think i should get him?

Answer
I would suggest to follow your son for buying the Xbox 360 because it is the best console ever made for gaming and he would love playing the most popular game n Xbox. right now is Halo reach. But if he likes watching blu-ray movies and playing online for free I would suggest the PS3.

The Xbox 360 is a total media center that allows users to play, network, rip, stream and download all types of media, including high-definition movies, music, digital pictures and game content.

The Xbox 360 can also display pictures and perform slideshows of photo collections with various transition effects, and supports audio playback, with music player controls accessible through the Xbox 360 Guide button.

The Xbox 360 is available in three standard variants; the "Xbox 360 Arcade", the "Xbox 360 Premium", and the "Xbox 360 Elite". There is also the latest Xbox 360 Slim, is just the same with the great Xbox 360 experience with added features like a new sleek smaller form factor case and controller with matching color scheme, 250 GB internal hard drive. While Playstation 3 is designed for users who can play games in high definition using Blu-ray disc, connect to the Playstation Network for free online gaming with friends, download demos, trailers and games from the Playstation store, store music, video and photos, and browse the internet as you would on your PC.

Does anyone know how to make a blu-ray player region free?

blu ray player ejects disc
on Sony BDP-N460 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review by Greg Robinson on ...
blu ray player ejects disc image

Skywriter

I've recently got a Samsung Blu-Ray Player and want to play my other region DVDs on it does anyone know how to make it all regions, the make is a Samsung BD-C5500.

Any help will be great

Answer
This device is sold in Australia as a locked region 4 DVD and region B Blue-ray player. There is no current procedure for unlocking the Blue-ray and it is probably not necessary because over 80% of released disks are region free anyway. (Just don't ever buy the other 20% and they will get the message soon enough!)

To change the DVD from region 4 (Pacific/Australia) to region 9 (region free) follow these steps using the remote control. (Adapted from http://tinyurl.com/2acybpj for Australian conditions).

1. Ensure that there is no disk in the tray.

2. Switch the player off and then back on. This is necessary to clean-boot the firmware.

3. Wait until the main menu page appears and the player stops doing anything.

4. Press the eject button to open the tray. (The button is between the "Power" and "TV Power" buttons at the top of the controller.)

5. Press the eject button to close the tray.

6. Wait while the player searches for a disk.

7. As soon as the "No Disk" message appears at the top left corner do the following.

8. Press the REPEAT button â just above the TV channel selector at the bottom right of the controller.

9. Enter 7 6 8 8 4 on the number pad.

10. The region code "4" should appear at the top left corner of the screen.

11. Enter a "9" to make the player region free. (Enter a region code if you want to lock the player to another region for some obscure or perverse reason.)

12. Power down and power up again.

13. Play a foreign DVD to verify the change.

==========================================================================================================

Now the tricky bits. This process is timing dependent.

Firstly, you must start entering the code just after the "No Disk" message is shown and before the message disappears. If you jump the gun or miss the boat (isn't English great!) it won't work.

Secondly, the REPEAT key is part of the code. All six keys must be entered smoothly as "REPEAT 7 6 8 8 4". The entry gets timed out so you can't stop in the middle and restart. Don't bash away like crazy, just do it smoothly and briskly.

If you don't see the "4" the first time, don't worry. Just repeat the process. It took me about a dozen tries before I got it to work.

I can't guarantee that this player does not have a region change counter so I would be a bit careful about changing regions back and forth. I also can't guarantee that this will work with all released firmware. Samsung seems to take this crazy region bastardry very seriously for some reason.

=======================================================

For people from other parts of the world, all region codes are as follows

1 â 2 9 3 3 4
2 â 5 7 5 3 8
3 â 5 6 7 3 2
4 â 7 6 8 8 4
5 â 5 3 8 1 4
6 â 2 4 4 6 2

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1â6 flags set.
1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories
2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland
3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau
4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania
5 India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia
6 People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, North Korea
7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)
8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.
ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

what does the warning 62 message mean on my memorex blu-ray disc player, and how do I get the door to open?

bambiann48

i was playing a dvd and it was a bit scratched but not bad, and it skipped, then froze, and then the message screen showed up saying message 62 and the door won't open to take the disk out. I turned it off and back on, but nothing happens but the same message screen. I'd rather not open or deface my player itself, I just like it to work. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi

If the mechanism is similar to a philips dvd recorder try tapping with 2 fingers just above the draw a split second after pressing the eject button .The latch sticks.

What are the pros and cons of the PS3?

blu ray player zone free
on ... zone B or C. Multi Zone All Region Free DVD Blu-ray Disc Player Lots
blu ray player zone free image

Mmmm.... C

I had an Xbox 360 till the red lights of death took over. I am not going to invest in another Microsoft system because of the disappointment. I don't really like the Wii so I'm probably going to get a PS3.

I read mixed reviews about this system. Mostly criticized for the dim game selection, and that the system does not use its full potential. Is this a system that you think will excel and eventually take over the gaming industry or is it the biggest flop of all time?
(also does it play DVDs or just Blu-Rays)

Answer
Pros:
-Typically comes with larger HDDs, which even then are simple and easy to upgrade, not to mention doing so doesn't void warranty (if for some reason you need ridiculous amounts of space. Some people do, but I understand it doesn't appeal to the masses)
-Free Online Play (Despite being free, it's quite stable)
-Blu-Ray Player (plays DVDs and most .avi files as well)
-Wi-Fi adapter built-in
-Rechargeable Controllers out of box
-Decent library after a two-year buildup
-Hideo Kojima's current exclusivity (MGS, ZotE, etc)
-PSN has a very nice collection over the years, with Pixeljunk [developers] being among my favorite. Arcade doesn't at all have a worse collection, but the PSN is decent nowadays to where it's still worth mentioning that you have something to substitute Arcade with.

Cons:
-Online play options aren't as robust as Live, including....
-No cross-game chatting, yet. You get the option to send texts via virtual keyboard, but it's difficult to find people willing to use it.
-*Slightly* smaller gaming library
-Because there's no unified online gaming network, the difficulty in joining a friend's online game varies from title to title.
-Wish it had Castle Crashers (though at least I have Pixeljunk :))

Neutral Zone:
-Six-Axis functionality (while rarely ever used *well*, at least it's not a con as it's rarely required)
-It has Home, which presents a unique, new console experience to interact with fellow players. It gives you a way to find other like-minded gamers. This is a neutral zone, however, because the novelty of Home BETA faded very quickly. Granted, it's beta, but they may have missed with this one. It is, however, not a CON simply because it's an optional feature, so it's not like it hurts.

And there you have it. Honestly, I think the first deciding factor ALWAYS comes down to what games you want from your exclusives. I got the Wii because I wanted Twilight Princess, and the PS3 because I was addicted to Warhawk. However, if you find yourself as more of a Gears of War or Halo guy, maybe you should get another 360. Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, or Warhawk more of your thing? Get a PS3
If you like any other shooter: guess what, they're almost always multiplatform. Do you love sports games? They're also multiplatform (I WILL admit that they are slightly better on the 360, but the difference itself is not a console decider).

Second factor is gaming partners. It's much more entertaining to game with people you know, regardless of how the console performs.

For me it simply came down to the fact that I was unwilling to pay for online play, though I do have a great deal of respect for how good Live is.

As far as criticisms you've reported:
-Dim game selection was a problem at the very beginning of the Playstation 3's life-cycle. However, at the end of two years it's shaped up. Library isn't as wide as Microsoft's, but it has a quality lineup. In fact, looking at http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?&results=50&name=&console=&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Score&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort= :
I notice that we nearly have a 2:1 advantage of PS3 games over 360 games in the top 50 rated games (granted, only one source).

-Game developers don't use the console's true potential simply because most game developers shoot for multiplatforming their games. What does that mean? That developers don't take advantage of the processing power of the PS3 because they still want the games playable on the 360. It's not a bash on the 360, but rather explaining that it's simply the easy business decision. If people are to take advantage of the PS3's hardware power it won't be until the later half of this console generation.

-Is it going to take over the industry? Heck no, at least not in this forseeable future. Biggest flop? HARDLY! It's a beast of a machine. Its misguided, slow start did indeed hurt it indefinitely, but the console is still selling nonetheless. It's a powerful, versatile machine with potential yet to be discovered.

Make Panasonic Blu-Ray Player ZONE FREE?

Brendan

I have a Panasonic 3D Blu-Ray Recorder (DMR-BWT720)
Can I make it ZONE FREE and Multi-region for Blu-rays with a remote code and switch back and forth, or does it need chipping?

I want to legitimately buy original 3D Blu-rays from abroad which aren't out in Britain.

If it needs chipping, can you personally recommend someone you've used personally?

How can I convert my new Samsung Plasma TV into Smart TV with QWERTY remote?

K

I just bought my first TV. It's a 60" Samsung PN60F5300. I got a great deal on it, which allowed me to go to 60", but I don't have Smart TV capability. The salesman told me I could get a Smart box (like Roku, Vizio Co-Star, or NetGear NeoTV MAX) or a Blu-ray player with smart TV capabilities, and it would be a similar result. I don't have a DVD player, so I will need to buy one regardless. I am looking to get good quality, reliable electronics, without breaking the bank...so really, I'm just looking for good value. It is also a HUGE benefit for me to get a QWERTY remote for the Smart TV apps.

My choices:
1) Get a Smart set-top box that comes with a QWERTY remote and a plain Blu-ray player
2) Get a Smart set-top box, buy a separate QWERTY remote, and a plain Blu-ray player
3) Get a Smart DVD player and purchase a separate QWERTY remote
4) Return the TV and just buy a 50" Smart Vizio LED E-series TV that comes with a QWERTY keyboard (This would cost $35 more than the TV I have now, but I would lose 10" of screen size. I would still need to buy a plain Blu-ray player.)

My questions:
1) Which options provide the most value for a good price?
2) What brands would you recommend for these items?
3) If I buy a Blu-ray player or set-top box without a QWERTY remote, is it even possible to get one separately that will work? What product would this be?

Please help! Any advice or recommendations are welcomed! Thank you in advance!
I don't really need any gaming at all, and I'm thinking about cost, so PS3 or XBox probably won't work with my budget as well as the other options.

Answer
Yes, the Xbox seems like the winner, if it's not too expensive. If you wouldn't need the Blu-ray player, the Roku 3 has been a great success. New interface, faster hardware etc.

But it's only a streaming player. If you look into it, this review might help

Would you use a remote with a mic?

mr blue

Like to search on Netflix ,Hulu , or Google tv. Instead of typing in the name. You just say the name of the movie or program into the mic on the remote. Then the remote processes the audio then sends it to the device ( like xbox /ps3 /wifienabled blu ray player ) .Just wanted some feedback on this idea.

Thanks

Answer
No, I'd rather have a remote with a qwerty keyboard.

What are the best home theater system for a 1080p HDTV and blu-ray DVD player?

blu ray player or ps3 image

T J

I recently purchased a HDTV with 1080p and a blu-ray DVD player (PS3), and wonder what are home theater systems that would provide better outcomes at a reasonable cost (<$500). Do I need to buy a system or a receiver and separate speakers with capacity of 7.1 channel and HDMI 1.3 output?. Any recommendations on particular brand name and model?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Answer
The above answer will give you amazing sound, but that solution takes a lot of time and money. If you want a "quick fix" that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won't match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver.

Can someone tell me the difference between Blu Ray discs and DVDs?

Is Blu Ray better?
Best Blu Ray player?(is the PS3 good?)
What are the new features of Blu Ray discs?

Answer
Data-wise, a DVD and a blu-ray can hold the same types of data. In fact, they can contain any data you like, it's just a matter of finding a device that can read that disc to write or retrieve that data. A DVD can hold multimedia and data files... and a blu-ray can hold multimedia and data files... it's just that a blu-ray can hold many many more of them. Here's why:

I'm sure you've heard by now that blu-ray discs require the use of a blue laser to read the data. In fact, the primary reason for blu-ray's superiority is due to some breakthroughs in optical technology. The wavelength of the blue laser could be reduced to 405nm from the red laser's 650nm... meaning that basically the same amount of information could be stored and retrieved in a smaller area. Making the disc layer thinner and slightly increasing the laser aperture size eliminated unwanted spreading and bending of the light waves to keep it well focused.

-Yes, blu-ray is better both physically and capability-wise.

-The best blu-ray player overall is considered to be the PS3, as it supports all of blu-ray's capabilities. It took a while for Sony to release a firmware update that allowed decoding of DTS HD Master Audio, but it is now a full-featured profile 2.0 blu-ray player. The best standalone player is considered to be the Panasonic DMP-BD50.

-Features of blu-ray have yet to be fully unlocked. Of course the capacity allows for high bit-rate video at full high definition, and uncompressed audio. Everyone knows that (or should by now). But, with BD-Java programming capability and bringing the internet into it with BD-Live, the possibilities become astounding over DVD. I mean, it's not going to change your oil or balance your checkbook or anything... but, from an entertainment standpoint it's a pretty exciting medium. The movie companies finally have a medium with capabilities that can provide their customers with a full immersion experience in their living rooms.

DVD is the big brother and is still a damn good medium. But, moving into high definition and interactivity beyond that of navigation menus and Easter Eggs, DVD just doesn't cut it. However, there is no war between DVD and blu-ray. If there were, Sony would not have made it so all blu-ray hardware must support DVD. It's just a step-up from previous technology. I don't doubt that soon blu-ray and HVD (holographic versatile disc) will be in the same boat.

im looking foe two remots, online, a memery card, two games, and a head set.

Answer
Xbox 360s don't, nor will they ever have a Blu-Ray player for it. And considering you want a Blu-Ray machine, you'd have to go to PS3.

Look for a good deal on a PlayStation 3 that gives you the option to choose your games and accessories. Then, I suggest buying the $60 SOCOM: Confrontation bundle. It comes packed in with the official PS3 bluetooth headset (bluetooth is also something you can't have on 360).

If you want a 360 and a Blu-Ray player, you have to make a choice. If you need the them both that badly, you'd have to get a 360 and a PS3 for the Blu-Ray. If you just want a gaming system, the PS3 is your man.

Hope this helped =)

Is the quality of movie playback of a blu ray movie on the ps3 as good as a stand alone blu ray player?

Answer
The BEST Blu-ray player is the Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD (according to Consumer Reports -- this is the US version of the BDP-LX70) -- largely because of the high-end video processing built in -- but the PS3 at about $400 is a fraction of the $1000 US price, and the choice of many home theatre installers.

One advantage of the PS3 -- ignoring it's gaming ability -- is that it can be updated fvia firmware and has gone from a profile 1.0 to 1.1 player in recent months and is now profile 2.0 (The final step -- which adds Internet connectivity).

Many early adopter consumers -- who tend to be technically literate -- consider the PS3 the best player.

The quality of the video image from the PS3 is as good or better than most stand alone players ... certainly anything in the price range.

The only decision is whether you can accept the looks of the PS3 ... although some people simply hide it -- and remote control it -- rather than adding to their other equipment.

Question about surround sound speaker sound and placement?

blu ray player volume low

blu ray player volume low image

Sarah

I bought a home theater in a box, the Samsung 5.1 setup. It's good enough for me and I am happy with the sound.

But I have a question. The Blu-Ray player supports 3D but I do not use this feature as I cannot stand 3D. It has these sound settings called "vertical surround" and the options of Low, Off and High. I have the surround speakers position a little behind and to the sides of my listening position, and when the vertical surround is on High, I got all the little extra sounds like people laughing in the background and stuff, but everything else playing out of the surround speakers is SO LOUD. And playing piratically right in my ears. It basically sounds like whatever is playing out of the regular speakers plays out of these too, and I thought that only certain sounds came out of surround speakers, that's why I am thinking 'High' is the wrong setting. Turning it on Low or Off and I still get effects but my subwoofer isn't as active when the vertical is turned off. It's barely there at all when the vertical is turned off. I have these speakers at the lowest volume and it's still loud.

So here's my question - what does the vertical surround do, exactly? Does it need to be on? Am I giving myself TOO much sound from the speakers? Or should I try to move them further back, along the back wall, about 4 feet from where I am sitting? I read the side placement is ideal for 5.1. but the sound from the speakers seems overwhelming in that position. And why would the subwoofer not be as active when vertical surround is off?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Answer
Your question can best be answered by your owners manual or a Samsung customer service professional. My opinion would be to live with the setting the best suits you on average then read as much as possible about the brand. Besides that I would have to take a look and a listen, I can't do that.

what's the difference between Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio?

Paloma Eva

i've got harry potter and the half blood prince on blu ray, and the audio is dolby true hd, it's okay, but when somebody speaks, it's too low, and even if you turn up the volume, it doesn't make a difference! but the harry potter and the deathly hallows part 1 on blu ray has DTS-HD Master Audio! but is there any difference?

Answer
Dolby True HD and DTS-HD are BOTH Lossless codecs, so at the end, BOTH should provide identical bit streams.

You need HDMI from the BD player to the AV receiver to even be able to use either of them, and of course your receiver needs to support them.

What do I need to do for my Blu-Ray player to play netflix on my tv?

Tianna

I have a Blu-Ray player that I can apparently stream netflix from (instead of like a wii or xbox, etc), but I have a wireless internet connection and a wired connection is required so I'm wondering what I need to do or buy to be able to watch netflix in my upstairs bedroom (router is downstairs). Thanks!

Answer
Easiest way is to connect the bluray to your router but most likely it's too far away. Second option is to get a wireless adapter for the bluray. Refer to the manual to know which ones are compatible. Third option is to use a powerline adapter like these: http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343240502&sr=8-3&keywords=powerline+adapter
