Well first of all, I want to clear up an implication in one of the posts above mine which suggests the PS3 is a poor-quality Blu-Ray player. The fact is that the PS3 is actually considered to be one of the best Blu-Ray players at ANY price. Spend some time on avsforums.com, which is full of professional reviews and full-time audiophiles and videophiles who know their stuff, and you will see this to be the case.

Now, as far as potential... I give the nod to Blu-Ray. They not only have larger storage capacity (which essentially defines potential) but Blu-Ray is already capable of 7.1 channel sound whereas HDDVD hasn't grasped this (yet). But aside from that, it's still too early to tell who will win. Right now, and for some time, Blu-Ray has been outselling HDDVD at roughly 2 to 1. But the fact is, between BOTH formats only 3 million discs have been sold; they are selling at less than 1% of the rate that regular DVD's are selling. This means that if HDDVD gets their act together they can EASILY win this thing. Even though Blu-Ray is outselling; by no means is there a commanding share of the market.

I have the ability to play both formats; and after a few months, I have roughly 5 times the number of HDDVD movies as I do Blu-Ray movies. It seems to me that generally, the type of movies I prefer are on HDDVD. But at this point... I guess I don't really care who wins; they are both excellent formats.

Blu-ray player with Netflix and USB movie player?

I was wondering if anyone could help me out in finding me a blu-ray player that has wifi capabilities (particularly Netflix) and a USB port that can play movie files (particularly .avi).

I was looking at the LG BD570 on Amazon, but some recent reviews say that there are problems with the Netflix so I'm not sure. And I know it's not that bad at around $198, but maybe one for cheaper would be nice.

Blu-Ray is the newest generation of mainstream home video media, just as DVDs were in the late '90s and early '00s and VHS was in the mid-'80s.

Blu-Ray is an optical media just like DVDs: a round aluminum and polycarbonate disc which is read by a laser. The laser in Blu-Ray players is a violet color (hence the name Blu-Ray) as opposed to the red color used in DVD players. Blu-Ray discs have a much greater storage capacity than DVDs, and the movies are high-definition 1080p resolution (1920x1080) as opposed to enhanced-definition resolution of DVD (720x480) and the standard-definition or low-definition resolution of VHS. So the picture is much more detailed on Blu-Ray discs, but only when displayed on a high-definition TV, monitor, or projector.

Blu-Ray discs also can carry up to 7.1 channel audio, versus 5.1 for DVDs.

Blu-Ray discs cannot be played in DVD players, but DVDs can be played in Blu-Ray players.

I am looking for a good bluray player that can play DVD (upconverted) as well as Blu Ray Disks.

I need HDMI out in 1080p/24fps and 7.1 Channel Surround.

They will all do what you suggest in your question. You'll find when you shop that most brands have two or more models at two different prices. Ask yourself what will I do with this BD player?

if the answer is: just play blu ray disks and my regular DVDs. then you can go with the lower priced models.

if you want to stream netflix and do all kinds of fancy crap, get the upgraded versions. You'll see the regular versions for about 199 and the upgraded cousins in the same brand for about 299, maybe up to 350 or so. now many are on sale for less than 199.

if you get one that's the same brand as your TV, you might get to consolidate two remotes to one !!

What home theater systems should I look at?

I'm starting to look at my own home theater system for my room because I want surround sound. I don't know what I should look at though. I want a 4.1 or 5.1....And I just want the speakers/subwoofer, no DVD or Blu-ray player with it. What I don't understand is whether I need floor speakers or just the smaller ones for my room. And where do you position the 4 or 5 speakers if they are all small ones?

Please help, I'm very new to this.

Well, what size is your room?
If it is small - medium, then floor standers may be too much...although, they do relieve the need of a subwoofer to some extent unless you want room-shaking-bass.
Many bookshelf speakers these days are sufficient - and able to fill even a large room full of sound- you do need a sub to assist.

Usually, receivers power 5- 7 satellites... This includes a centre channel- which usually handles most of the vocals. All DVD or bluray movies are recorded in Dolby digital or dts: 5.1 or 7.1 formats... Which means that your 4.1 system option is incompatible and would have to do a conversion for it to work.
This is why 5.1 / 7.1 systems are more abundant vs. 4.1 (which I've only seen in computer gaming systems).

As far as positioning...
Any 5.1 or 7.1 system that is sold would give placement instructions... And some supply also an auto-calibration mic and module.
