Advice for buying a Blu-Ray player?

I'm planning on buying a Blu-ray player but am confused as to what to look for. I've looked at a couple on Amazon and Walmart but would like to know what I should be looking for in a Blu-ray player.

These days its more about features than anything else. What do you want it to be able to do? Some for example can connect to the internet via wi-fi. This can be really handy if you don't have an easy way to get a wire from the player to your router. Having it connected to the internet is nice because then you can stream movies, connect with an netflix account etc. Make sure it is wi-fi built in, many of them say wi-fi but look closely, it may just say wi-fi ready. Make sure it is built in.

If you are interested in any particular formats make sure it includes everything you want. For example I have CD's compressed with FLAC, I like playing SACD's etc. If you have an interest in any particular format like this just make sure the player you get supports it.

Other than the above, there doesn't seem to be much difference in the cheap ones. If you want to spend more money you could get the Oppo for about $500 and get better quality but if you are shopping in the below $200 market I would say anything that has the features you want will work fine.

ok I got a laptop http://www.walmart.com/ip/Toshiba-L675D-S7015/14335614 and I just bought a new tv at walmart.com http://www.walmart.com/ip/LD4068/15522301 my question is since my laptop can play blu ray discs and my tv is a 1080p output could i just connect my laptop to my tv and get the same quality as a bluray player? thanks :)

You can connect the laptop to your TV to play blu-rays in 1080p IF - and only IF - your laptop has a HDMI output port on it that is HDCP compliant. HDCP is the copy protection they use on blu-ray movies. If the HDMI port doesn't support this, you can still play blu-ray discs, but they'll be downscaled to DVD resolution and won't look quite as good on your TV.

I couldn't tell for sure if this was the case with your laptop or not just looking at Walmart's webpage. Most laptops that do have a HDMI port also support HDCP.

If the laptop has a HDMI port, just buy a standard cheap HDMI cable. It shouldn't cost you more than $5-10 in a store. Check your laptop's manual on connecting the laptop to a TV for details, like if the laptop requires a separate audio cable or not.

Does anyone have experience with this Blu Ray player (or similar Blu Ray players) I'm wondering because my TV has a faulty or poorly made HDMI which produces fuzzy picture at 1080p so i have to use a HDMI to DVI cable (If you don't know DVI cant carry audio unless its DVI-D) and i want to use the BR players RCA audio cables but since HDMI carries audio will the BR player assume the audio is being transferred though the hdmi or is there a setting to choose where the audio comes out?

P.S. Do BR players have settings to adjust resolution I.E. run a 1080p movie at 1600x900 (or what ever the movies down scaled resolution would be) because the hdmi port i have can display good quality as long as its anything lower then 1080p.

You should get the best audio and video possible thru the hdmi cable only. Something is wrong with the cable or the blu ray player.

I would check out both and see if you can fix it. If not, I would take the blu ray or cable back, whichever one is defective.

You only get true 1080p when you play a blu ray disc.

In your blu ray menu there are settings for 3 or 4 different size videos that you can change. I have mine on wide screen and it seem the best.

Almost forgot, depending on the tv you have, you have to enable the hdmi setting on the tv's menu.

Some do it automatically when you connect the hdmi cable, but I would check, this could be your problem

I would suggest that if it still has a warranty you get it fixed. However, without that receipt you may not be able to do that either

Next time keep the receipt (or a copy of the receipt) with the unit.

Lost receipt for blu ray player. Refund?

I want a refund for a blu ray player i bought at walmart. It sucks. I lost the receipt and i paid with cash. However they looked in the register's history and the serial number on the blu ray player wasn't found. There is a 90 day window for returning this and its only been two months because i bought the player on 10/12/10 but I have no proof of it. Is there any way I could still get a refund. They said that i could exchange the blu-ray player for a new one of the exact type, could I use the receipt from the new player and return it for the refund of its total?

hi logan....walmart and other large retailers buy their stock in large numbers they should be able to trace it via the serial #...and you paid cash, someone is lying to you...exchange the blu ray player for a new one.....and dont buy from walmart again,either that or keep your receipts in a very safe place in future......merry xmas.

Are you saying that you want Walmart to accept something you bought at another store in exchange for one of their products?

If so, it will not happen. You can't return a product to a different company than the one you bought it. For example, Gap and Banana Republic are owned by the same parent company, and they won't even let you return a Gap product to a Banana Republic store.

There is certainly no way they will let you "return" a product to a store that is completely unrelated to the store you purchased from.

Why not just return the Blu Ray player to the place you purchased it and use that money to buy a PS3?

At the moment your choices are still somewhat limited, but that will be changing soon. If you want something _right_now_ you'll still be looking at the new Samsung models that load considerably faster. The BDP 1600, which replaced the 1500 model, or there is always a higher up/more expensive Samsung you could get. Or you could go with an LG. I think the Samsung would be a better choice. You could find a 1600 on Ebay for about $185. Walmart sells (online) the model 1590 which is basically a 1600 with a slightly different face to it and sells for $50 less than the 1600 in the stores. They sell for about the same in Ebay.
However, Sony just announced that they will start selling next month a new player that will stream Netflix once they have a firmware upgrade ready later this fall. ($250) No reviews yet on that model as it has just barely been announced. It will probably be similar to their 360 model or perhaps a bit better.

Hi all, I have a question regarding my personal information and what is, and what is not stored on the blu ray player.
My Samsung blu ray player lost its power connection. I called Samsung and they were nice enough to extend my warranty. I sent the p,Ayer to them, they refurbished , returned to me. I was never able to hook it back up to my smart tv. I just finally called for help. We went through several process steps and finally the tech said the HDMI connector on the blu ray was not working, that he would extend the warranty again, send it back, and all that. I decided to go to Walmart, purchase a new blu ray to hook up to make sure the tech was guessing right. I told the Walmart checker that I would be returning the player most likely and would they accept it I'd the box was opened. She acted like that was such a common event and said of course I can return. So, my question is- since I did put in my AT&T Internet key code to get it all running on the web so I could check it out (it did work by the way- the Samsung guy was right)...question: when I return this blu ay player, will it still have my AT&T information stored in it and how can I erase the AT&T wifi code before I return it?

I just bought the $69.00 Magnavox MBP5130/F7 Wireless Blu-Ray Player deal from Walmart's black friday sale. It says on the ad that it can stream netflix, but I can't figure out how to set it up. Vudu comes prepackaged, but not netflix. Anyone know?

I bought a blu ray player from Walmart a month ago. I watch blu rays and DVDs on it all the time with no problem. But, on a particular blu ray ( Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 :-), the disc and player freeze and I can't do anything but turn it off. It's not like the disc is scratched because it is new. I was able to watch it with no problems on my friend's blu ray. What's up?

It has to do with the color of the discs and the laser type in you player. This is a common problem with the lesser expensive players, they do not always play everything. I bet your friend has a better quality player and that is why it plays there. Take yours back, get a refund and purchase better unit.

All I need is one that I can play Blu-Ray movies on. I don't need all the bells and whistles like apps and Netflix streaming. I have an Xbox 360 for that. And I don't have the money to get a PS3 if that's what you're thinking. I've been looking a this Sony Blu-Ray player at Walmart for $79.99. Is it a good one? The Blu-Ray player inside the PS3 will be better than most $500 and under standalone Blu-Ray players. I own a PS3 and had the same debate months ago, and simply chose the PS3 because I can also play games. I have had it for about 1.5 years now and have never had any problem. I watch Blu-Ray movies at least once a week.

You can go pick up a cheap Blu-Ray player at WalMart if budget would be a limitation, but it will most likely break down sooner than the PS3.

The PS3's went down in price a lot: 299 plus tax. You can even find a cheaper one on eBay for around $250 brand new.

The PS3 looks nice and will make a great addition to your home. Hope that helps!
