Yes...the Blu-Ray players will continue to drop in price. Not to much lower over the next year but it has dramatically come down from two years ago when I bought the first one for $999. Now you can get them from $250-$350 range.

Yes...you really need an HD TV if your going to watch HD movies. I mean if you want to see it in 1080p resolution which will blow you away. Otherwise it will look like regular TV and not worth buying. Really the HD TV should come in handy more than the Blu-Ray player now with Dish TV, DirecTV, ATT U-verse, FIOS and cable TV offering 30-100 HD stations to watch.

The Blu-Ray player is great for home viewing of HD movies and even up-scaling the old DVDs to a better quality than you are used too.

How do I update my Blu Ray player?

Most Blu-ray players allow for you to update them by downloading the update on a computer and burning it to a disc. The disc can then be inserted in the Blu-ray player and allow it to update. Some Blu-ray players have Ethernet ports on them that will allow for automatic updating via an internet connection. Others have usb ports that will allow for you to download the update and place it on a usb flash drive.

regardless of how you get the update to the Blu-ray player, the update should be available for download from the manufactures website.

What Formats Can Blu-ray Players Play?

I have a friend who burned the entire Doctor Who show from beginning to last episode, and at one point I was watching them on my xbox, but the earlier episodes seem to be in AVI file format. He said his family watches them on their Blu-ray player, and I was just wondering do all Blu-ray players play ordinary file formats or do you have to have a special brand or model and if so what brand/model?

All Blu-Ray players can play Blu-Rays, DVDs, and audio CDs. Most of the players from big name brands can also play other formats including AVIs, MP3s (for music), Photo CDs, VCDs, etc. Just check the specs or look on the box and it'll be spelled out.

But compatibility with these other formats may not be 100%, especially for formats that have a lot of variation such as AVI - for instance AVI can use one of dozens of different video and audio formats, and you can't expect a player to be able to handle all of them.

PS3 is a great blu ray player.

However, if you are going to buy it, make sure it do use it for the gaming. Watching a blu ray movie on a ps3 uses 3x the amount of power than on a regular blu ray player.

So if you're just in the market for a player, just get a regular one. They all play movies the same, the only differences are added functionalities on some.

Is there something I can look for in a blu-ray player so that I know it will be able to be hooked up to his surround sound system? I think he wants to hook the speakers up to the blu-ray player instead of his dvd player.

Unfortunately, he will not be able to swap his DVD player with the Blu-ray player. What he has now is a HTIB (Home theater In a Box) and those do not allow for you to mix-n-match parts, so he will need to keep his multi-disc player as it is what is powering his speakers.

That being said he should be able to add a blu-ray player and simply connect the audio from the blu-ray player to the DVD/Surround sound system. What you should look for is the highest quality audio connection that he has on his DVD/surround sound system. Ideally it should have a digital optical connection looks like this.

Or he should have a digital coax connector which looks like this.

Consider this home much larger is his DVD/Surround sound system than a regular DVD player. Not much I bet. So how much of the electronics are truly dedicated to audio quality. Not much.

P.S. I also second the recommendation for a Panasonic Blu-ray player as I also have a 1st Gen player (built around 2006) that outperforms some of the newer players. Panasonic just makes quality Blu-ray players.

Can picture quality differ between different blu ray players?

Could one blu ray player look much better than the other or are all blu ray players pretty much the same when it comes to playing blu rays? I know they differ in apps and such, but I just want great picture quality and wanted to know if some players might look bad.

Yes, every Blu-ray player will give you a different overall image due to their color decoders, video processors, de-interlacing capabilities (when needed), power supplies, etc. Even if you play the same Blu-ray movie in all of them, in theory they all suppose to reproduce a slightly different image (at least). This is considering different brands. But if you're worried about "bad quality" with Blu-ray movies, I doubt you would be disappointed. Let's not forget that Blu-ray movies are mastered in native HD, usually 1080p or sometimes 1080i to 720p. What this means is that your image will be crystal clear 100% of the time with all or most players. And ofcourse, resolution doesn't guarantee anyone the right color reproduction, temperature, shadow detail, etc, etc. It is up to the user to choose the best possible player and adjust all the settings, from the player to the display. Some good players to consider: SONY PS3, Most Panasonic models, and all OPPO players. Good luck.
