Is it worth buying a Blu Ray player?

Downstairs we have a 37" full HDTV and Sky HD. I've seen HD movies on Sky HD but not Blu Ray movies on it. I think HD isn't that good and is overrated. I'm getting a 32" Full HDTV and I'm wondering if it's worth getting a Blu Ray player.

Movies on Blu-ray discs are encoded at 1080p so they aren't "better than HD", they ARE in HD.

Does it make sense to get a blu-ray player?

In your case, probably not. On screens smaller than 40", you're going to hard pressed to distinguish between an upscaled DVD movie and the same movie on blu-ray.

Do get an upscaling DVD player and DO connect it to your TV with a HDMI cable. This will give you near-HD quality and will probably look nearly identical to a blu-ray.

Im looking for my first blu ray player. I would like wifi, but no 3d. Something that has decent loading speed. And I'd Like to keep it fairly cheap without sacrificing quality. Any suggestions?

Believe it or not the Sony PS 3 is still the buy in blu-ray players. It takes some time to properly setup all the audio video setting in the menu (which makes a big difference in the picture quality) but its a good player. You can set it up for auto-play just insert and starts playing. The only other thing is it uses a bluetooth remote which must be purchased separately.

Good Blu-ray player that I would suggest is Panasonic DMP-BD60 and check amazon.com for good deals for both tv and blu-ray player.

i am looking for an internal blu-ray player rewriteable that can burn ps3 games for my own use so i dont mess up my orignial copy...if legal. also i need this to be capable of burning two layered disk? i thought i read somewhere that i need that and idk what its called when looking for it . would a used one be worth buying?

Unfortunately, you cannot reproduce PS3 games, as it is illegal. Search the web for deals for a blu-ray player because I have not heard of a blu-ray player that can burn two-layered PS3 games.

Should i buy a roku over a blu ray player that can also stream apps?

It doesn't make sense to buy a little box to stream apps if i could also buy a blu ray player and do the same thing. Are there more perks that come with a roku? Is there better quality with a roku? I wouldn't mind having a blu ray player looking at the whole package, but i mostly just want to use it for netflix.

Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (Black) s is a awesome Streamer/Bluray/DVD player. I haven't experienced any issues whatsoever playing back Bluray disks. Boot times are very good with the disks I tested. Everything played back perfectly with stunning picture quality. However, I really purchased this player for its streaming abilities. Sony players were dinged in the past for a poor Netflix experience. Sony have fixed this with a updated Netflix interface that supports 1080p and Dolby Digital+ streams.

How do you do software updates on a Blu-Ray player?

Im looking to buy a Blu-Ray player and some of the reviews complain about software updates. How hard is that to do? Is it worth the extra $50-$100 to get one that is already updated?

Manufacturers often create firmware updates to fix bugs or add new features, so even if you buy a player with the current firmware, it could be out of date in a few weeks and need a firmware update.
If the player is connected to the internet, then it will tell you when a new firmware update is available and ask you if you want to install it. If you tell it to install the firmware update, it does it automatically - just be sure not to use the player or press any buttons while the update is taking place - in other words, leave it completely alone or it could crash. If it's not connected to the internet, then the manufacturer will have instructions in the manual about how to get the updates - typically you download them to your computer from the manufacturers website, then save the update on a flash drive, then insert the flash drive into the blu-ray player and let it do the update.

Can you hook up a Blu Ray player to a Panasonic surround sound system?

Some entry level surround systems have few or even no audio inputs. If you want 5.1 surround, then your surround receiver would need to have an optical (or coaxial) digital audio input (and the Blu-ray player would need an audio output to match, either optical or digital).

If your surround receiver has stereo audio inputs (red and white color coded RCA inputs), then you could connect the Blu-ray player that way, but this would be 2.0 stereo, and not 5.1 surround.

If you can get the audio connected to the surround system, I am guessing you would still connect the Blu-ray player's video output directly to the TV, because your receiver probably has no video input, or at least no HD video input.

As of right now the PS3 is the best choice....WHY?

Well right now the PS3 is one of the most reliable, durable and cheapest blu-ray plaer on the market today. THe PS3 is also the very few blu-ray players that can updates its firmware to the latest profile.

With this $399 price you get a blu-ray player and an ultimate game console which plays high def games, free online gameplay and can even install Yellwo Dog Linux operating system on the PS3 to use as a computer operating system...

So unless some company company comes out with a stand alone blu-ray player less than $200 or $300 the PS3 is your best choice.

Check the box -- it should say -- but you will be pretty safe to assume an HDMI cable is NOT included.

BUT, don't feel you have to buy the expensive cable the saleperson will tell you that you need. Read the article at the link. Monoprice HDMI cables (~$10) are perfectly adequate for 1080p up to 10'-15'. For longer distances or if you are really fussy check out Bluejean cables (2nd link)
