ps 3 slim is better. Because its have more graphics and more free online games.

7.1 provides a fuller, more cinema quality sound because you have 2 more surround speakers place to the direct left and right of your seating area.

The PS3 is very good. As a stand alone Blu-Ray player it has some limitations. It isn't the fastest starting anymore and if you would like to control it with a universal remote control then you need to buy an extra device to adapt the IR signal to USB or Bluetooth. If you don't need the gaming I would probably recommend this player

can i control the PS3 blu ray player if i get a dongle and use an old PS2 remote?

im going to get a PS2 controller to USB dongle and plug in my PS2 dvd remote sensor so i can finally use my Harmony to control the PS3, but does blu ray have different funtionality that makes it mandatory for the bluetooth remote. (i dont have the PS3 yet)

No the bluetooth remote is not mandatory and a USB>IR dongle is a well-used solution already for those requiring a universal remote.

I do not think you can use the coloured function short-cuts however that the Blu-ray Discs are coming with now, but all the main features (play, pause, menu, etc.) should work fine.
