What Blu-Ray Player do you think is best.?

slum71

I just got a Samsung 52 inch LCD HDTV. I am looking to put a BluRay setup on it, but I need help making up my mind. I know several people suggest the PS3, but I am looking for something that will upconvert DVDs to near 1080p, and I am eventually going to set up a theater system onto it. I'd like to do some of the BD-Live stuff as well. Anyone have any suggestions or good or bad reviews about the players that they have. Thanks for your opinions.

These both are BD players - that are under 1000 bucks...

Answer
Panasonicâs latest Blu-ray Disc players are an exceptional value when it comes to Blu-ray performance. If itâs possible I would also wait and see what OPPO Digitalâs plans are for their new BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. (Itâs supposed to be making its debut at the 2009 International CES, held January 8-11.) If the BDP-83 BD player performs as well with Blu-ray Discs as their upscaling players perform with DVD-Video discs then it will be tough to beat for those discerning consumers that have a significant investment in DVD-Video discs and/or whose tastes range beyond what is available with the current crop of BD releases. If the latter applies to you then I highly recommend that you check out Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelityâs DVD Benchmark.

Samsung hasnât had a very rosy past when it comes to their earlier BD players so at this point in time I would be very hesitant to recommend a Samsung BD player.

If you absolutely cannot wait a little while longer to see what shapes up at the upcoming CES 2009 then I recommend purchasing one of Panasonicâs new BD players.

I am still trying to get the whole HD audio thing understood. Maybe it's just me being OCD, but hearing that the PS3 internally decodes those two HD audio formats, but doesn't light up on my receiver, irritates me. Do I just accept it? Get a stand-alone blu-ray player? It seems like no matter what home theatre receiver you use, it's going to be the same thing if you use the PS3.
I am connecting via HDMI.

Answer
For the time being itâs best to just accept the limitations of your PS3 as they are not so great to warrant purchasing a new BD player if you do not own a reasonably high-end surround sound audio system. Also, many of the latest mainstream BD players (such as those models reviewed below) still cannot offer better performance than the PS3 when playing DVD-Video discs, which continue to serve as one of the primary sources of pre-recorded movies in most peopleâs homes. Continuing to use the PS3, which is an extraordinary value, should buy you enough time for the eventual release of reasonably priced BD players that noticeably outperform the PS3 in overall A/V performance and functionality.

Please read the reviews below, which compare the respective BD players to Sonyâs PS3, to get a perspective on what the latest BD players offer relative to a PS3.

I would like a blu ray player in the $120-200 price range that has streamable content (such as netflix and pandora) and will be able to read .vob files off of a usb drive. Is there any blu-ray player that fits my description?

Answer
Below is a hot link that features Phillips blu-ray player and others around the price point you have requested.
