Will my blu ray player be able to play videos from an external hard drive?

That is the blu ray player I got yesterday and I can play videos on it from a memory stick but I don't know if it will play them from an external hard drive. It says in the product description it can but I don't see how it would be powerful enough to power the hard drive
I'll probably also have to format it in fat32

Modern hard drives are powered from USB, like almost all WD Passport Essential devices. The question is, whether the player supports ntfs and/or ext3/ext4 filesystems, which is required for storing files over 4 gigabytes, or just fat32, which is pretty much limited in size and maximum file size.

Limitations of FAT32: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184006 For some reason I think this player is even more limited, since it has not too much RAM installed. I've seen DVD players which could use a stick, but limited to FAT32 and 2 gigabytes.

It works fine on my computer and other computers, but I tried to connect it, through a USB port, to my parents Sony Blu-Ray player and it said that it was 'not supported'. Is there any way to have it recognize the hard drive at all? I've read a lot of forums that said the .avi movie files cannot be seen, but is there any way to view the photos or music? If not, it's no big, I can hook up my computer to my tv at my house, but I was hoping to share movies I made and photos with my family before I went back there. Any help at all is appriciated.

Sony Blu-Ray player support USB port, so u can convert your .avi video to M2TS or or other Sony Blu-Ray player compatible formats for enjoying. I suggest u use foxreal video converter to solve this problem. I have used this software. It can convert between various of formats with excellent output quality. You can try it.
I know Sony Blu-Ray player support JPEG image format. You can convert it.

What external hard drives will work with PS3 and blu ray players with USB input?

I bought a WD 1TB external. For movies, and shows. My buddy formatted it to FAT32, and I put the movies and music in the folders you are supposed to such as "PS3" "VIDEO" and "MUSIC" and I connected the drive to the ps3 and then the blu ray player, and nothin showed up. Is it because 1TB was too big? And if that's not the case, what could be a solution?

You probably need to reformat it with a better utility. Use Fat32Formatter:

It bypasses all Windows limitations, no install required, just unzip and run. It makes the drive fully compatible.

Then be sure you put the media in the proper folders (NOT PS3): Pictures, Video, Music just in the root of the drive.

You can also highlight the device, tap Triangle, and select Display All to browse the entire contents of the drive.

Also note, the drive must be USB 2.0 for the PS3 as USB 3.0 requires more power to run as it has a higher power rating and the PS3 can't recognize it even if it is 2.0 compatible.

I'm looking for a blu-ray DVD player that I can attach a external hard drive to. I want to be able to download movies from my computer to the external hard drive an be able to watch it on my HD 1080p TV. Not just movies I want to be able to listen to music as well.

Some of the BluRay players are 'smart' and will play a few file formats from a USB drive.

But most televisions and BluRay players will NOT work with a USB hard drive.

If you want to do this - get a media server. Look at the Western Digital TV Live box. This thing WILL work with USB hard drives, gives you 20+ apps for YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, etc. It will also work wirelessly from your PC. The WD box plays most file formats include .MP3's.

A cheaper version is the Roku2 units for about $60, but it does not play as many file formats.

I have a 300GB Western Digital External Hard Drive that I want to connect to my Sony BDP-S185/BX18 Blu Ray player. I have tried formatting in FAT32. The hard drive is externally powered by a hub. Sony tech support says it should work, but I get an error telling me it cannot read it. Any help would be great Thanks.
