Should I add a Blu Ray player to my PC?

I am buying a new PC. My current PC is 4 years old. It still runs great since I know how to keep up with computers so I am expecting that my new PC will last me at least 4 years as well. I am just getting a new one because things are getting out dated. For most PCs now I can add a Blu Ray player for around 200 dollars or I can keep the standard 16x DVD/CD Combo. I already have a PlayStation 3 so I don't need a Blu Ray player for movies.

What do you guys think? Should I invest 200 dollars for a Blu Ray player or do you think it is pointless.

Just some ideas for arguments. Does anybody know if any exclusive Blu Ray only PC games are coming out? In Four years do you think most people would be on Blu Ray or still on DVD?

There really is no right answer to this question so please give me your advice. Also please no one word answers. Explain why I should or shouldn't.

the only things that came out for blu rays disk are ps3 games and movies,since you have a ps3, i would save your money.

You will have to worry about whether the HD video card HDMI port is an output or an input. If -- as I suspect -- it's an output (intended to go to a monitor or TV) you can't INPUT a signal from the output of the Blu-ray player.

Frankly, I think you would be better to consider an internal or external Blu-ray drive for the computer, rather than a standalone Blu-Ray player. HOWEVER, consider whether your computer is up to handling HD (in addition to the video subsystem there are minimum CPU and RAM requirements).

External Blu Ray player on windows 8 PC?

So at home I have a pretty big blu ray collection and watch it a lot. But when I travel around I cant have with me a monitor and bluray player ( duuh ) so then a PC is perfect for the job, except that 95% of PC`s dont have blu ray players. Online they sell a lot of USB blu ray players with a small design perfectly for traveling. Is this a good idea, do I need some kind of software to play blu rays or is it just that your PC needs to be powerful enough.

I have a pretty good PC with a lot of RAM, good graphic card ( 1080 screen ) etc
Is it just to connect it via USB and play it or is there many cons using external blu ray players?

If you have USB 3 port, that would be fantastic, but the external USB players should also work on USB 2 ports.
To play video (like Blu-ray), you don't need a very powerful computer. Most media players support Blu-Ray (perhaps with a plugin) but I highly recommend VLC (http://www.videolan.com) or XBMC (http://xbmc.org). Both are free players that don't require additional codecs or plugins and they work on multiple platforms. XBMC even has the advantage that it can read straight out of zip and rar files, in case you ever downloaded a video file.

Short answer:
= Yes vlc player should be capable of playing a blu-ray file or blu-ray disk (if the optical drive reads blu-rays).

Long answer below:

First you need a optical disk drive that can read blu-rays disks.
- The optical disk drive may be able to read dvd's and cd's as well.

Second you will need a media player that can play blu-ray and dvd and cd discs/files.

The Blu ray player has limited accessibility and function so you will not be able to do it...You would have to connect the TV to the computer and usually the easiest way is through HDMI cables....if you do not have that it may be more trouble than its worth....

I wanted to watch a movie on it that released recently and it wouldn't play. It mentioned something about firmware updates online.

I am just curious how on earth I'm supposed to update my Blu-ray player if I download updates via the Internet?

Do I need to connect my BR-player to the Internet and my PC??? How is that done?

The easy way is to have it connected to the internet and turned on and go in the menu to update the firmware.
The other way is like your doing or you can use a usb flash drive and download it.

I'm sure that Sharp has someone that can tell you what ext. you need on the download

Many of my standard DVD's are original movies. But I also bought many in the Singapore and Hong Kong markets as well burned some on my own PC with some software. Is there a Blu-ray player that will play all of them?

There are several DVD players without a region code. The best part is that they are typically the ones your see on sale for "dirt cheap" under $50 bucks. They are generally made without region coding. Most wont say "multi-region", but they usually are. Keep your receipt and all the packing just in case you need to take it back.
As for something that plays multi-region Blu-ray? Good luck. I am sure there are places on the "good ol' web" that could explain how to reset/unlock the region code in your DVD player. The positive side is that you can now play DVDs from just about anywhere. The down side is that you have now VOIDED any and all warranties by the manufacturer and Blu-rays still ain't cheap so it could get expensive if you have any Technical

I'm playing a mkv video file off of a data dvd. The blu ray player and remote do not give an options for subtitles. There is no disc menu to change such things because it is just a data disc.

Are they forced subtitles? With mkv you have the option of embedding forced or optional subtitles (that can be turned off).

Play it on a PC and see if the subtitles are there. See if you can turn them on and off there. If you cannot then they are probably forced and you are stuck with them. If you can or they are not on by default this you are at the mercy of your Bluray players options which are usually limited when it comes to playing non-dvd or non-BD media....
