Playing Blu-ray Discs (BDs) on a computer is a challenge. You must have 2 things - the hardware part and the software part. The hardware part is that you have to have a BD-ROM or burner that is HDCP compliant. In fact, the entire machine (drive, video card and display) must be HDCP compliant. High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection is an anti-copying scheme encoded in much digital content (DVDs, BDs, often in content delivered by satellite or cable) that if it encounters any non-HDCP gear in the signal path shuts the signal down (often with a message like This Content Is Not Playable or Forbidden or something).
Once you have the hardware figured out (and a laptop with a BD player is most likely already good to go - desktops, with the ability to add drives like BD burners, etc are where the problems often lie) you also need software to play a BD - Windows Media Player and even open-source programs like VLC (which plays almost all formats known to man) don't do BD.
EDIT: This site says VLC will play BD with the correct codec or codecs and the latest AACS library installed... check your level of tech ability with this! See here:

What I've used for years is PowerDVD - it works, most of the time. I say "most" because one thing about BDs is they change the copy protection on some discs so you must download/install an update for a particular disc to play. There are other BD software players out there, but here's the latest PowerDVD version:

No. Blu Ray is HARDWARE. So, in order to play Blu Ray discs, you need a Plu Ray Player. Only a Blu Ray drive will play Blu Ray discs. This is not done through software.

not really. windows 7 is able to replace your DVD player and Blu-ray player if you hook it to your television and are willing to go through the widows boot process anytime you want to watch a movie. There are DVR programs you can install that give you DVR functionality but they lack the easy interface of a dedicated TIVO. you can often find PC versions of XBOX games because they are both microsoft products but Playstation keeps a pretty tight riegn on their gaming franchises so even though you can download PS3 emulators (illegally mind you) they will never match up to using the hardware the game was designed for. If you choose to go this rought then you need a PC with Windows 7 or the new windows 8 demo version, a TV tuner card, a blu-ray drive, a PS3 emulator (again illegal), a bluetooth adaptor (for linking your PS3 and XBOX controllers), and DVR software. Your probably looking at $500-$800 depending on brand and you still would have to have a computer that has a strong enough processor and enough memory to run all of this.

Then select your computer's operating system, XP or what ever and dowload the frmware file and burn it to a cdr disk and you now have the firmware to use in your Sony. If you do not have a burner, you can go to the same site and call the number 866-909-7669 to ask them to mail you a cd.

How do I watch Blu-ray movies on Windows 7?

I recently purchased a brand new MSI A6300 notebook. It comes with a blu-ray player and Windows 7. I have tried to use Intervideo WinDVD 8. But unfortunately, it does not play any BD discs. Supposedly Corel does not support this version of the software anymore.

Are there any alternative programs I can download for free to watch Bluray movies on Windows 7?

If it has a built in Blue Ray CD/DVD drive you do not need any additional software than what is installed on the laptop. Read the user guide/manual for the laptop section on using the optical drive.

Got a panasonic home theater w/ 5 disc DVD back in 2006 at circuit city for $340. Out of all the units I was blown away by the sound quality. The subwoofer could be a bit bigger, but you can see the windows shake, with it all turned up. Well the time has come to update. I got a refurbished blue-ray panasonic receiver and I am moving it up to the bedroom. I have been looking at some Samsung 3d smart 1000watt home theaters. Does anyone have Samsung surround sound system and like it? Or would like to recommend one. I don't want to hear how crappy the box units are and how I should get a huge receiver, speakers and blu- ray player.(unless you can lead me to a place to get a good receiver and speakers for $200.) Looking for something 200-350 new or refurbished. Also what all do you need to make a blue- ray, DVD or whatevers remote go through a cabinet door? Thank you

Those home theater in a box are not a very good system. They are not flexible for adding anything to them or for up grading. Don't be mislead to the powering rating they provide. You are not going to find a stand alone receiver and a set of good speaker for the budget you have in mind. They only thing that I can recommend is the Onkyo HT-S3500. It is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speaker. You can demo the unit at a Fry's Electronic and retails for around the $280. This is better than any home theater in a box. You add a Panasonic blu ray disc player and you have a nice dependable system. You need to demo the Samsung and let your own ears be the judge. Hope this will help you out.
