I am buying a new tv...?

Sarah

I was wondering, what would make a better big screen tv... plasma, or LCD screen. I know that plasma you have to get cleaned, but in LCD you have to change the bulbs after they burn out. I was wondering what would last longer, and have a better picture

Also, I was wondering what would be better.. I have a HD Dvd player but What is so great about Blu Ray? Is it worth upgrading to get a blu ray player? or whats the difference?

Answer
Actually, Plasma's aren't that much expensive compared to a similar sized LCD with comparable features.
Plasmas are heavier than LCDs, and are suited more for rooms in which you can control the amount of light mainly due to reflections from their reflective (shiny) screen surface.
Some LCDs have this type of screen as well, but there are many that don't.
As far as lifespan goes, you will be happy with either one, they will both last about 10 years for an average user.

As for the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray pretty much won the battle with Toshiba and other major movie studios dropping HD-DVD in favour of Blu-Ray.
If you buy certain HD TVs you may be able to get a Blu-Ray DVD player for free. But even Blu-Ray is not at its full potential yet; it has higher capacity than HD DVDs, and will have more interactive features in the near future.
Most of the current Blu-Ray DVD players out there don't have the software support for this, but a playstation 3, which is a great gaming console and a Blu-Ray DVD player is a sexy package, will be upgradable easily and for free.

That being said, you will only truely appreciate the capabilities of HD-DVD or Blu-Rays if you're watching DVDs on TVs 46"+ with 1080p.

So my recommendation would be go buy the 40GB Playstation 3, and a 46" 1080p Samsung or Sony LCD TV if your budget allows. These two will cost $2200 to $4000 together, before taxes.

Have fun shopping!

Playstation 3 a good investment?

what type of dvd player should i get for my new tv?

Ryan

ok so i just bought a 26" vizio lcd hdtv it says it has a display compatibility of hdtv (720P) but has signal compatibility of 480i (SDTV) 480P (EDTV) 720P (HDTV) and 1080i (HDTV) so what kind do you guys recomend i get should i get a blu-ray player or something like a hd dvd upconverter and what kind

Answer
i think that blu ray would be overkill because of their cost, and it has such a high resolution (1080...uh, p, i think) compared to your visio. your t.v. is 720p compatible and should be perfectly compatible with a blu ray player, given your t.v. has an hdmi socket on the rear... but you will only be viewing a 720p picture versus the 1080 resolution put out by the blu-ray. however, lifespan of lcd t.v.'s is an issue too, and given the newbie reputation of visio as a company, is a new t.v. (possibly sporting a higher resolution) in your future? if so the blu ray may be the way to go if you ever plan on upgrading. p.s. i would stay away from anything hd dvd since it has somewhat been deemed a dead technology and some stores have even pulled hd dvds and players from their shelves.

Is the 80GB PS3 one of the latest models, has it been out long, and does it have Blue Ray problems?

Thomas P.

Is the Blue Ray player in all the PS3 models the same? I've heard the biggest problem with the PS3 is Blue Ray failure? How often does this happen? I've heard that the PS3 Blue Ray hardware has a life span of a little over a year. Is this true? Does one model of the PS3 last longer than another. I'd like to buy an 80GB, how durable is this model? Has Sony addressed it's complaints regarding the Blue Ray player?

Answer
the blu ray player is the main problem with the ps3, but it is rare at that.

no it is not true that they only last a year. ive had mine for much longer than that and it works flawlessly.

about 2 in 1000 systems will experience this problem (0.2% defective rate)

all models are built exactly the same except for the HDD size (obvoiusly). the 80GB is very durable, just like all the other systems. you cant go wrong.

the ps3 has a lifespan of 10 years, so expect to see it around for another 4-5 years easily.

Is It too late to buy a ps3 or xbox 360 and which one is better?

Im looking to buy a new console and im just wondering i its too late to buy it as in the next generation will come out soon. Im thinking about getting a playstation or xbox and im leaning towards a playstation but still quite indescisive. Is it too late i dont think it is but just asking and which 1 would u recommend?

Answer
There are more than likely still quite a few years left in the current generation of consoles as not one of the big 3 console manufacturers seem eager to get a new console on the market anytime soon as a lot of money has been invested in console development this generation (and a weak economy means that less people would be willing to shell out for a brand new console after only five years). We will continue see new variations and attachments (PS3 slim, Natal, Wii Motion Plus, Nintendo DSi, etc) to extend their lifespan.

As for which one to choose...

PS3 =
Blu Ray Player (and a fantastic multimedia hub to boot)
Free Online (and built-in wireless internet)
Better Visuals (in exclusive games)

Xbox =
Better multiplayer experience
Larger library of games
Higher quality multi-platform games (usually the case as most games are developed for the Xbox 360 first and are then ported to the PS3)

I personally love the PS3 for its high caliber single-player games and the Xbox 360 for it's exceptional online gaming experience.

Dantastic!

I am thinking about finally upgrading and was having a hard time deciding which to choose at this point in their respective lifespans. It's split right down the middle between my friends. So I figured I'd open it up to you. I want actual, well-thought answers to help sway me one way pr the other.

Bonus Question: Do you think it is worth it to get a 3DS if I already have a working DS Lite?

Answer
I prefer PS3 and have played both but to help you decide

PS3
Pros
1. Free Internet
2. Blu-Ray Player and thus better graphics and more storage space for more content.
3. Rechargeable Controllers
4. Sony is more generous, the PSN store is offering 2 Free games and free plus subscription to users right now. Their are also better free things in their store than the xBox store.
5. Very strong Wifi included.
6. When you buy the PS3, no additional accessories are needed except maybe an extra controller and game.
7. There are more and better exclusives on the PS3 like ModNation Racers, Little Big Planet, God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Buzz Trivia and more!

Cons
1. Less people have PS3 at this point because originally it had a ridiculous price tag of $600 and also the 360 came out 1st so it had more time to develop but that gap is closing and PS3 is growing!
2. The online can lag from time to time but it's nothing major. Would you pay $60 a year for the sake of a 2 minute lag?
3. No cross game chatting, you have to be playing the same game to chat but you can still message across games.

xBox 360
Pros
1. Much better for fans of shooting games as their are more exclusives centered around shooting.
2. More people have friends that have 360s.
3. Cross game chatting
4. Lag-free

Cons
1. The controllers require AA batteries
2. Wifi is weak and many need wifi adapters which cost over $40
3. Internet cost $60 a year
4. Known to overheat and break extremely easily
5. So many additional costs.
6. No Blu-Ray Player
7. Other than shooting games their aren't that many good exclusives that aren't shooting.

Don't get a 3DS it is essentially the same thing as a DSi but with 3D and different games that you can't get on the DS but is ridiculously priced at $250. Add 50$ to that and you can get a PS3.

is blu-ray better than HD DVD? What the best affordable Blu-ray or HD DVD player out there?

appham

Answer
Blu-Ray holds approximately 40% more information per disk over HD DVD, but production costs are higher.

The bigger difference is what studios are supporting each format. While Blu-Ray ha the edge in technology, HD DVD is trying to capture the market by getting studios to sign exclusive deals - so your favorite movie may not be available on one format or the other.

There is also a control issue, Sony has decided not to license Buy-Ray to adult content - the same limitation they made with Betamax during the VCR format wars. This limitation can also be applied to unrated cult-classics such as the Rocky-Horror picture show. It has been suggested this type of control restrictions is what caused them to loose the VCR Wars.

If you are in a hurry to adapt, I would go with the HD DVD for a better chance at future lifespan. You can pick up a Toshiba HD DVD player for $250 from Tigerdirect with 5 free movies by mail.
