Using a Vista PC as a network bridge for Blu-ray player?

T2427537

In my living room a have a PC running Vista Biz. It's connected wirelessly to a linksys router. It also has a unused network card. I also have Blu-ray player. Instead or running a cable to the router or buying a wireless adapter, I would like to connect a cable from the Blu-ray NIC to the PC NIC. Thus using the PC as a bridge. Can this be done and how do I do it? Does the cable need to be a crossover or will a regular Cat-5 cable work

Answer
Performance won't be great compared to a hardware solution but yes, you could turn on Internet connection sharing and do this. I assume a Blu-Ray player would only use the connection infrequently for updates, anyway?

You'd need a crossover cable since you're bypassing any hub/switch router and going direct between the NiCs of the two devices.

how do i hook up a pc to a blu ray player?

Apple.

I want to watch movies from my pc on my tv but i don't have any of the wires. i do however have a blu ray player that is hooked up to the wireless internet. i need instructions on how to connect the pc to the blu ray. please help

Answer
The Blu ray player has limited accessibility and function so you will not be able to do it...You would have to connect the TV to the computer and usually the easiest way is through HDMI cables....if you do not have that it may be more trouble than its worth....

External Blu Ray player on windows 8 PC?

victor

So at home I have a pretty big blu ray collection and watch it a lot. But when I travel around I cant have with me a monitor and bluray player ( duuh ) so then a PC is perfect for the job, except that 95% of PC`s dont have blu ray players. Online they sell a lot of USB blu ray players with a small design perfectly for traveling. Is this a good idea, do I need some kind of software to play blu rays or is it just that your PC needs to be powerful enough.

I have a pretty good PC with a lot of RAM, good graphic card ( 1080 screen ) etc
Is it just to connect it via USB and play it or is there many cons using external blu ray players?

Answer
If you have USB 3 port, that would be fantastic, but the external USB players should also work on USB 2 ports.
To play video (like Blu-ray), you don't need a very powerful computer. Most media players support Blu-Ray (perhaps with a plugin) but I highly recommend VLC (http://www.videolan.com) or XBMC (http://xbmc.org). Both are free players that don't require additional codecs or plugins and they work on multiple platforms. XBMC even has the advantage that it can read straight out of zip and rar files, in case you ever downloaded a video file.

can i play Blu ray Movie files on VLC player ?

Manish

Iam actually new to the world of Blu ray and am downloading a Blu ray movie rit now(46 GB on whole) i was wondering if i could play Blu ray movies(movie files on my hard disk) on my VLC Player(2.0.5 da recent updated player).. i play DVD UltraHD(18 GB single movie) movies on VLC(well, thats somethin stupid to be stated, ikr).....

but to ask plane,
CAN I PLAY A BLU RAY MOVIE FILE ON MY HARD DISK in VLC PLAYER on MY DESKTOP PC?

Answer
Short answer:
= Yes vlc player should be capable of playing a blu-ray file or blu-ray disk (if the optical drive reads blu-rays).

Long answer below:

First you need a optical disk drive that can read blu-rays disks.
- The optical disk drive may be able to read dvd's and cd's as well.

Second you will need a media player that can play blu-ray and dvd and cd discs/files.
- The best free three media players that I recommend are,
- I recommend you download k-lite codec pack for media player classic (also k-lite codec pack can be used for windows media player). (64 bit for k-lite can be found here: http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm ).
- or download km player (don't download all that extra korean crap).
- or download vlc player.

One of the best paid media players that's very popular and good that I hear is power dvd from cyberlink.

This was one of the only system requirements I can find for being capable of playing blu-ray's, dvd's, cd's.
(These system requirements may be different depending on what media player your using).
- DVD: http://www.cyberlink.com/support/product-faq-content.do?id=8089&prodId=1&prodVerId=720
- Blu-ray: http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/bd-support/enu/system-requirement.jsp

Blu ray player vs. blu ray PC drive?

Shaun

Here is the system that I have
i7 920
asus x58 MB
8 GB Ram
GTX 280
and 1000 watt PS

Im not sure what would look better a blu ray drive from my PC which would cost around $100 or a standalone Blu ray player.
What should I get and why?
And is there any difference in quality between the two?

If you dont know what i7 is then please dont comment I want advice from someone that knows what their talking about.

Answer
Your system is plenty adequate to playback Blu-ray discs, so you'd get a great picture from a Blu-ray drive in your PC. There really isn't any difference in picture quality (assuming you hook up your PC to your HDTV with a HDMI or DVI cable), the only difference is going to be convenience. A stand-alone Blu-ray player will come with its own remote made to work with the features it has, and will work even when your computer is off. Having the drive in your PC means you have to boot up your computer to watch a movie, have to play around with finding and setting up a third-party remote control... and you've tied up your computer, if anyone else was going to want to use it while your watching your movie.

Got a blu-ray player for xmas, the only internet hookup is thru a LAN port on the back. My PC is upstairs, and I don't want to install a network jack. Does anyone know of a product to use that will plug into my blu-ray and pick up my wireless network?

Answer
I would really recommend that you run an Ethernet cable, most wireless solutions are much slower than wired, and less reliable too. However, if you are adamant on wireless, http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-WL-330gE-Portable-Functions-Universal/dp/B0014L4ZKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293470551&sr=8-1

Is it possible to transfer a Blu ray drive from a Blu ray player into my Computer?

Joey D

I have a Blu ray player that isn't being used because I'd rather play things from my PC. I was wondering if it is possible to open up my blu ray player and take the blu ray disk drive out and put into the open SATA spot I have on my motherboard.

Answer
If the Blu Ray's Drive architecture is SATA and the connecting Power jack also SATA then theoretically it's possible but either of those connections is incompatible then-- No.

Keep in mind the the amount of power required for a "stand alone" player might be a different voltage. So either you won't have enough juice to run the device or it might cause a power surge and kill your motherboard.

It may also be possible to connect via USB if adapters are available for that purpose. Research it before making any physical attempts. I applaud you for thinking outside of the box.

Good Luck.

How do I install a firmware update to my Blu-ray player?

Douche bag

Blu-ray player: Sharp BD-HP20

I wanted to watch a movie on it that released recently and it wouldn't play. It mentioned something about firmware updates online.

I am just curious how on earth I'm supposed to update my Blu-ray player if I download updates via the Internet?

Do I need to connect my BR-player to the Internet and my PC??? How is that done?

Thanks!
Or, do I need to burn the upload on a CD?

I can't even get the latest firmware to download properly... It's in .RVP

Answer
The easy way is to have it connected to the internet and turned on and go in the menu to update the firmware.
The other way is like your doing or you can use a usb flash drive and download it.

I'm sure that Sharp has someone that can tell you what ext. you need on the download

Is there a Blu Ray player that will play my ENTIRE DVD collection?

Yajaida

Many of my standard DVD's are original movies. But I also bought many in the Singapore and Hong Kong markets as well burned some on my own PC with some software. Is there a Blu-ray player that will play all of them?
On a related note are there any universal players (non-region coded)?

Answer
There are several DVD players without a region code. The best part is that they are typically the ones your see on sale for "dirt cheap" under $50 bucks. They are generally made without region coding. Most wont say "multi-region", but they usually are. Keep your receipt and all the packing just in case you need to take it back.
As for something that plays multi-region Blu-ray? Good luck. I am sure there are places on the "good ol' web" that could explain how to reset/unlock the region code in your DVD player. The positive side is that you can now play DVDs from just about anywhere. The down side is that you have now VOIDED any and all warranties by the manufacturer and Blu-rays still ain't cheap so it could get expensive if you have any Technical

I have a router. If I get a Blu-Ray player with internet capabilities, is it possible to connect the Blu-Ray player to the PC wirelessly so that I can view videos stored on the PC on my TV via the Blu-Ray player? In other words, is it possible to make that Blu-Ray part of a home network? Thanks.

Answer
If you have a PS3, yes.

Not all BD players have a built-in digital media receiver.

Will a downloaded blu ray movie work on a pc that doesn't have a blu ray player?

Jason

I was wondering if a pc without a blu ray player can play downloaded blu ray movies?

Answer
Yes, it can. You simply need a downloaded blu-ray file in your pc and a media player such as GOM or Flv.
