For the same price? Get the ps3, no question about it.

A ps3 is as good a blu-ray player as any stand-alone blu-ray player. It's simple to use and has all the controls you'd expect of any blu-ray player. Sony invented blu-ray so they made sure ps3 does it right.

Make sure you have a working broadband internet connection, though, because you've got to download the firmware for the ps3 to operate, and the blu-ray player to work.

The ps3 also upconverts DVD's to HD and does a good job of it.

So for the same price, it's basically a question of a blu-ray player, or a blu-ray player plus top-notch game console plus computer. The ps3 is the better deal.

btw the ps3 is sold WAY below the invoice total of the cost of its components and production cost. It costs over $1000 to build one.

what is a good blu ray player for a cheap price?

I have a really good sound system that decodes all sound types dts master dolby hd so i dont need the player to decode it all i need is one with really nice picture (dont need deep color tv doesnt have that function) and send out 7.1 hd quality audio to my receiver decoded or uncoded dont really care if it has bd live but it would be a nice thing to have prices under 200 would be great
also not my tv does 24p so thats would also be nice to have on the player

*I actually own the Sony one above, and I love it. Never had any problems with it and it looks great with my HDTV. Also, it is one of the smaller and lighter models that I have seen recently.

I recommend the Sony, mainly because Sony has a great reputation for making high quality products, and from personal experience I can tell you that the BDP-S350 is a great player. Also, take into account what kind of TV you have, for example if you have a Samsung TV then think more along the lines of the Samsung BDP, because it eliminates some of the remote-control clutter by using the same remote, and I'm sure other companies do the same thing.

Unfortunately Blu-Ray players cannot play HD-DVD's as they are made using an entirely different format from Blu-Ray Discs. As I understand it, old DVDs will also play on Blu-Ray players as well. (www.blu-ray.com/faq/)

If you can stretch out an extra $50, this is a superb blu-ray player. It is profile 1.1 out of the box but samsung includes a USB 2.0 drive in the back of the unit so you can update it through USB or even CD to be the new 2.0 profile standard. I know a few families that own this exact player and none of them have had any problems. The player has relatively slow loading times when loading blu-rays but that is to be expected with all blu-ray players. Samsung includes a loading icon to remedy this which can allow you to at least know when it is loading and when it is not. The sony player is very good as well since Sony are the main innovators of blu-ray.

If the extra $50 is too big of a stretch, there is an insignia blu-ray player going for $149.99 at best buy.

Unfortunately with this unit, there is no ethernet port in the back or a USB port in order to upgrade to profile 2.0 so it is not exactly future proof in terms of extra content if that is what you enjoy in blu-rays. I personally do not care about the extra features they bundle and always just watch the movie. If you share the same views then this player would be fine as it plays blu-rays fine. The main downside with this player is that the display isn't exactly the brightest and it does not bear the mark of the popular companies such as Samsung, Sony, LG, Pioneer, etc. that make quality products day in and day out.

I have a vizio HDTV and a Sony blu ray player, I found the RCA speakers and subwoofer with speaker wires(only) at a good price. I dont know much about electronics but will I be able to somehow hook all this up with what I have? If so, can someone send me a link or tell me how?

I'm Looking into a Blu-Ray player, and I'm wondering if the PS3 would be a good choice for one. I'm also into video games, and I already own a Wii and a 360. However, I know many other Blu-Ray players are less than the $300 price the PS3 has. Any tips/recommendations?

Since Blu-Ray is a relatively new technology, get a player that is able to get firmware updates in case there are changes to the media. The PS3 is an excellent choice there.

A perfect example of this: Remember older DVD players cannot play CDs or burned disks, aren't compatible with MP3s, JPGs, or even AVIs. Some even had a hard time recognizing dual-layer discs. If they were able to upgrade the firmware in the player, they might still be useful today.

PS3 is so much more than just a gaming console, also. You can stream music, movies, and pictures from your PC, stream TV and movies from the internet, have access to all the NetFlix instant movies to your main entertainment system. It is also an upscaling DVD player, web browser, WiFi connectivity built in...

PS3 is a great choice if it is in your budget.
