1 Returned to the factory, or an authorized repair station
2 checked for proper operations
3 repairs were done if necessary ( sometimes the unit could have been a return item with nothing wrong)
4 repackaged with all accessories that would come with a new unit.

So yes this is not a new unit, it had been taken out of the box. It may have been in someone's house, broke under warranty, fixed and being resold.

As to whether it is a good buy or not is up to you. Some people like to buy refurbished thinking that since the unit was checked out and has warranty and the price is reduced that it is. Others feel that you are just buying someone else's problem.

so i saw an "insignia" refurbished unit on best buy's website and bought for less than $60 tax and shipping included

what do you think, good deal??

Stop thief... you stole it!!! Well not actually but personally I've had good luck with some of these off brand super cheap players. I still have a $29 DVD player I bought years ago. I would carry it with me on trips mostly to Asia to use in hotels. Thing got beaten pretty hard and the darn thing still works. I say if it does the job for you then why pay more? No it's not the best brand name but so what. Especially these days it pays to save money, don't pay more than you have to!

Samsung 3600 Blu-Ray Player?

I just purchased the samsung P-3600. It was a refurbished model from Buy.com. I have it connected wirelessly to the internet. The problem is that the only program in "e-content" is "YouTube" How do I get "netflix" "Pandora" and "Blockbuster" applications on the device?
I found out from Samsung this was a Blu-Ray player not created for USA. There is no way to get netflix on my device. Everthing else works great on it...

Good Question, mine came new with all the apps you mentioned.

Pandora is free for 40 hours a month but you have to subscribe to it.

Netflix needs a subscription also. You can probably ask both how to get it on the blu ray. When I turned the blu ray on the first time, a registration number came up and I had to go online to type that number in. Being refurbished, someone else probably used those reg. numbers.

Blockbuster is a rip off. $4.99 to $6.99 Per Movie. I don't think you really will miss this one.

Can a blu-ray player be used on an analog tv?

Yeah, I still have my 15yr old non-digital, non-hd tv, nor do I subscribe to any of the cable's neat stuff with a converter box. I'm broke. I cope.

However my dvd player finally died and I'm debating if I should replace it with a blu-ray player... if it will even work on my tv (it's a Philips Magnavox, if that helps at all... no, it's not even a flat screen...*hangs head in shame*) Or if I should just get another dvd player. Please don't tell me to upgrade my tv. I don't have the funds and it's not going to happen.

I noticed some of the Toshiba blu-rays refurbished are also 3d-ready and whereas I KNOW I need an hd/3d compatible tv to make it 3d... is it worth grabbing a 3d-ready blu-ray (if it will work on my ancient tv that is) in the hopes that I might be in a better financial situation someday when I CAN upgrade the tv?

I just know enough electronicky stuff to get myself into trouble, so please, be kind with the jargon and talk me through things.

Get the most advanced blu ray machine that you can, do not hold back on features or technology for the fear of compatibility issues. Ok. ready? you're gonna love this. I know where you can get a large flat screen tv for free. Go to Craigslist and shop the "free" stuff category locally. Now, you'll have to use your senses to decipher what each of those posts are REALLY saying. It is very true (especially here) that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. However, a large flat screen CRT television (even hd) is currently changing from asset to liability in the living room of the world. Some places more than others. The affordability of the HD flat panel displays has people begging for someone to come and take that 300 lbs. CRT away, please. I only look at posts that have phone numbers, because until you talk to someone, every post is a fairy tale trying to soak up personal information for fraudulent purposes. Go get a big free new tv today and you'll actually be helping the people/person trying to get rid of it. Good luck

I am looking to get myself a blu ray player and also one for my mom and one for my dad for christmas. I am in college so I'm pretty tight on money. What are the best cheap blu ray players and the places to shop to get the best cheap ones? also when looking online I'm seeing a lot of refurbished blu ray players for cheap, any comments on there? do people ever experience problems with them? best refurbished brands? just need some general information on blu rays, all advice and answers appreciated, thanks!

I myself don't feel comfortable buying refurbished units although probably most of the returned units are cosmetic issues, but that is not to say they couldn't have had mechanical or electrical issues, but that's just me.

The best buy and quality blu ray player is still the Sony PS3, which I own and works great. The only two things is it does not come with a IR remote you have to use the joystick it comes with unless you buy the optional remote. You must also set all the video and audio settings to get the best picture, not a big deal but you do need to get into the menus.

Remember you must also have a high definition television to see the benefits of a blu ray so keep that in mind.

Is there a place to get insurance on a refurbished blu ray player?

I just found out that squaretrade only offers refurb insurance on ebay items. I'm glad I called. Is there any other site the would insure a refurb from bestbuy.(bestbuy only offers 90 days)

These 'insurance' policies run about $35/year starting.

A new BluRay player is available for as low as $60 and the name brands are about $90. So you are spending 30% of the retail price for the coverage.

Since you save money by buying a refurbished unit - dont waste money on the policy.

Got a panasonic home theater w/ 5 disc DVD back in 2006 at circuit city for $340. Out of all the units I was blown away by the sound quality. The subwoofer could be a bit bigger, but you can see the windows shake, with it all turned up. Well the time has come to update. I got a refurbished blue-ray panasonic receiver and I am moving it up to the bedroom. I have been looking at some Samsung 3d smart 1000watt home theaters. Does anyone have Samsung surround sound system and like it? Or would like to recommend one. I don't want to hear how crappy the box units are and how I should get a huge receiver, speakers and blu- ray player.(unless you can lead me to a place to get a good receiver and speakers for $200.) Looking for something 200-350 new or refurbished. Also what all do you need to make a blue- ray, DVD or whatevers remote go through a cabinet door? Thank you

Those home theater in a box are not a very good system. They are not flexible for adding anything to them or for up grading. Don't be mislead to the powering rating they provide. You are not going to find a stand alone receiver and a set of good speaker for the budget you have in mind. They only thing that I can recommend is the Onkyo HT-S3500. It is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speaker. You can demo the unit at a Fry's Electronic and retails for around the $280. This is better than any home theater in a box. You add a Panasonic blu ray disc player and you have a nice dependable system. You need to demo the Samsung and let your own ears be the judge. Hope this will help you out.

I've had about equal luck with new or refurbished stuff and you can indeed save quite a bit of money buying refurbished. Optical disc players seem especially finicky. Sometimes even a new one will stop being able to read discs after a short time due to some part or adjustment drifting out of spec after a break-in period.

I'm fine with buying refurbished, as long as there's a decent warranty. I wouldn't buy any refurb that's only guaranteed to work when you receive it with no further warranty.

Hi everyone. I'm a college student with an old Samsung TV that has inputs for red, white yellow cables as well as green blue and red. I'd like a blu ray player that can hook up to the internet (so I don't have to get cable, I can just watch netflix). My pipedream hope is for one around $50, but I'm more realistically looking around $80. Does anyone know any models that will work with my tv and play from the internet? Will these players also play my DVDs? Thanks!

The yellow connector is analog composite video, which can not carry HD (it's not even the best for SD).

The red, blue and green set of connectors carry component video, which IS capable of carrying HD even though it is not digital. Component HDTV is generally limited to 1080i (there are exceptions).

The red and white pair is of course right and left (respectively) analog audio.

Is your "old Samsung TV" an "HD Ready" TV? If it is an "HD Ready" TV that accepts 1080i over its component inputs, that would be great.
It could just be a standard definition TV that has component video inputs for progessive-scan DVD playback, but not capable of HD through those inputs. It would still be better over component than composite (at least you'd have progressive scan); composite would be your last resort.

Older Blu-Ray players did have component video outputs for HD video, but they quickly switched over to HDMI for several reasons -- see below.

Used/refurbished Blu-Ray players with component video outputs can be found for sale on the web if you search for "Blu-Ray player with component video output." I found some in your price range when I searched.

At "brick and mortar" stores... you might find one at a pawn shop or a resale shop.

Edit: One more thought -- This might all be for naught if your main reason is to hook up your TV to the internet, because older Blu-Ray players are not as likely to have that feature.
Do you have a laptop computer? You could just watch Netflix etc. on that.

Sidebar: Why did HD device makers drop component video and adopt HDMI?
1. Convenience for consumer: One cable for video and audio.
2. Digital transmission of the signals: immunity to RFI/EMI and cable-length issues (up to a point).
3. (IMHO the most important reason of all for manufacturers and distributors): DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT (aka copy protection).
Component video is not encrypted, so a tech-savvy person could copy HD content carried by it. To prevent copying HD content, HDCP ("Highband Digital Content Protection") is used. HDCP encrypts HD content and checks every link in the chain from source to screen for full compliance (to prevent a "rogue" device in the chain from making copying possible). They even put an updated list of rogue devices on new Blu-Ray discs as they release them. At the content maker/distributor's choice, one of two things can happen if any link in the chain is not HDCP compliant: either it will display the content non-HD, or it will pop up a box on the screen saying that it can't play the content unless the non-compliant device is replaced.

Hi all, I have a question regarding my personal information and what is, and what is not stored on the blu ray player.
My Samsung blu ray player lost its power connection. I called Samsung and they were nice enough to extend my warranty. I sent the p,Ayer to them, they refurbished , returned to me. I was never able to hook it back up to my smart tv. I just finally called for help. We went through several process steps and finally the tech said the HDMI connector on the blu ray was not working, that he would extend the warranty again, send it back, and all that. I decided to go to Walmart, purchase a new blu ray to hook up to make sure the tech was guessing right. I told the Walmart checker that I would be returning the player most likely and would they accept it I'd the box was opened. She acted like that was such a common event and said of course I can return. So, my question is- since I did put in my AT&T Internet key code to get it all running on the web so I could check it out (it did work by the way- the Samsung guy was right)...question: when I return this blu ay player, will it still have my AT&T information stored in it and how can I erase the AT&T wifi code before I return it?

Newer Blu Ray players do not have analog (including component) video outputs. I doubt if you will find any new ones with it.

I recently bought a refurbished model just because the old design had analog video out. Finding one with both analog out and built in WiFi seems unlikely, but I didn't look for one.
