If you can stretch out an extra $50, this is a superb blu-ray player. It is profile 1.1 out of the box but samsung includes a USB 2.0 drive in the back of the unit so you can update it through USB or even CD to be the new 2.0 profile standard. I know a few families that own this exact player and none of them have had any problems. The player has relatively slow loading times when loading blu-rays but that is to be expected with all blu-ray players. Samsung includes a loading icon to remedy this which can allow you to at least know when it is loading and when it is not. The sony player is very good as well since Sony are the main innovators of blu-ray.

If the extra $50 is too big of a stretch, there is an insignia blu-ray player going for $149.99 at best buy.

Unfortunately with this unit, there is no ethernet port in the back or a USB port in order to upgrade to profile 2.0 so it is not exactly future proof in terms of extra content if that is what you enjoy in blu-rays. I personally do not care about the extra features they bundle and always just watch the movie. If you share the same views then this player would be fine as it plays blu-rays fine. The main downside with this player is that the display isn't exactly the brightest and it does not bear the mark of the popular companies such as Samsung, Sony, LG, Pioneer, etc. that make quality products day in and day out.

picture-wise you probably won't notice much difference.
audio-wise, blu-ray has some lossless formats, so if you have a decent sound system you can notice a difference provided your equipment can properly decode them.

i myself have delayed upgrading to blu-ray, even though i have a 1080p tv. although some blu-ray discs can be found on sale for 15 USD or less, most titles are priced around 30 or more USD. Sorry, I'm not paying those prices. I used to pay that much for movies on 12 inch laserdiscs and ended up replacing them with dvd. i'll wait awhile longer. i've also curtailed buying many new dvd's. if there's something i really want i'll buy, otherwise i just download. eventually i'll buy blu-ray. i've also read some player reviews -- i want to get one that has the shortest delay (from time you load disc until time it starts playing).

Blue Ray is one of two incompatible high definition DVD formats avaialble for viewing movies. The other format is HD-DVD. And neither of these is compatible with DVD Video the original format. However most Blue Ray or HD-DVD players or the new LG Dual format player also play DVD video discs. The opposite is not true. In other words you cannot play a HD-DVD or a Blue Ray DVD in a old DVD video player. And only the LG combination unit can play all three formats.

Some movies are released on Blue Ray and some are released on HD-DVD (and maybe a few might be released on both but it seems most theatrical houses have to favor one or the other). For the short term it is most likely releases will continue on DVD video since this is what most of the public has and therefore where the most sales will be. But it is anyone's guess as to how long this will continue since it depends on how the public adopts the technology or if internet based downloads exceed high definition disc sales.

Is it worth it? That is a good question and depends on a few things. How much you want to spend is part of it. HD-DVD and Blue Ray players that play only that one of the two formats plus DVD video go for about $399 without special sales on Circuit City or Best Buy sites or in their stores. The LG Player which plays all three (Blue Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD video) goes for about $1000. So it would be cheaper to buy two players for about $798.

And there is the other consideration. Only a HD Ready TV or monitor can display the high resolution from these players. So if they do not have a HD Ready TV or monitor it would cost you more to buy one of those. And that could be about $3000 and up depending on how big the screen size is of the set and what brand you buy.

Should I buy a SP3 blu-ray player or the Sony stand alone blu-ray player?

I am interested in getting a blu-ray player and confused as to which one to buy! Which would produce better sound and image quality? I like the idea of the SP3 to play games on as well, but I'm not totally sure I would use it a lot to play games. Right now, the price for either seems to be about the same, so I am torn - please help! Thanks for your input!

As of today the ONLY Blu-ray player worth buying is the the PS3 ... if you don't want a games machine or want the style of a stand alone player wait for the Profile 2.0 machines later this summer.

BUT before buiyng make sure you can benefit from Blu-ray or that the improvement is worth the ~$8-$10 higher price of disks (don't expect current sale prices to continue ... they are artificial) and cost of the hardware. For many people Blu-ray is not a significant improvement over upconverted DVD. At the least you MUST have an HDMI equipped HDTV (and preferably a 1080p model over 40") ... not to mention the need for a good audio system to take advantage of the advanced audio.

It's a lot of money ... so I suggest you get a demo on an HDTV as similar as possible to yours (size, resolution) AND watch from the same distance as you will use at home. Compare a DVD and Blu-Ray disk (preferably the same movie) --- don't just watch a Blu-ray demo disk they are often HD video totally unrepresentative of what you will see on movies.

Is it possible to overcome the block that sony have put on preventing the export of the blu-ray display from the computer. I assume they have done this to maximise sales of blu-ray players. I do not have any problem using the tv as a second monitor, it just won't take the blu-ray signal. I would be very grateful for any help with this.

Your question doesn't make much sense. If your computer is connected to your LCD via HDMI cable then you should be good. Just extend your desktop to the second monitor. Drag Windows Media Player over to the second monitor and hit play. Anything displayed on your laptop can be moved to your second monitor.

I got this Blu -ray player on an open box sale for cheap, but forgot about a remote.It doesn't have one, and will not do anything without one. I have tried my Comcast remote, and 3 different universal remotes, but none of them will sync up. I can't seem to find a Toshiba universal remote, but I feel like that would work. any suggestions?

What's the best way to hook an HDMI only blu ray player to a Component only HD tv?

Ok so My dad's older blu ray player stopped playing blu rays, so I got him a new one since it was on sale. However, his TV is older and only does 720p (he doesnt care and cant really tell the difference), so therefore he has NO HDMI slots. New blu ray players ONLY do HDMI. So is there some kind of converter box I can buy that will let me plug an HDMI into it and then plug a component cable from that to the tv? I know its backwards BUT he isnt buying a new TV anytime soon cuz this one still works fine. I am not looking to spend top dollar, probably $40 tops (making the player and converter together cost about $120 total)

I see a lot of component to hdmi converters but not the other way around. Would those work both ways or just the hdmi to RGB way?
yea i figured it had to be hdmi to component specifically to work. Damn those are hard to find as are blu ray players that have component slots that stream netflix and hulu. :-\ The hunt continues.

Hi everyone. I'm a college student with an old Samsung TV that has inputs for red, white yellow cables as well as green blue and red. I'd like a blu ray player that can hook up to the internet (so I don't have to get cable, I can just watch netflix). My pipedream hope is for one around $50, but I'm more realistically looking around $80. Does anyone know any models that will work with my tv and play from the internet? Will these players also play my DVDs? Thanks!

The yellow connector is analog composite video, which can not carry HD (it's not even the best for SD).

The red, blue and green set of connectors carry component video, which IS capable of carrying HD even though it is not digital. Component HDTV is generally limited to 1080i (there are exceptions).

The red and white pair is of course right and left (respectively) analog audio.

Is your "old Samsung TV" an "HD Ready" TV? If it is an "HD Ready" TV that accepts 1080i over its component inputs, that would be great.
It could just be a standard definition TV that has component video inputs for progessive-scan DVD playback, but not capable of HD through those inputs. It would still be better over component than composite (at least you'd have progressive scan); composite would be your last resort.

Older Blu-Ray players did have component video outputs for HD video, but they quickly switched over to HDMI for several reasons -- see below.

Used/refurbished Blu-Ray players with component video outputs can be found for sale on the web if you search for "Blu-Ray player with component video output." I found some in your price range when I searched.

At "brick and mortar" stores... you might find one at a pawn shop or a resale shop.

Edit: One more thought -- This might all be for naught if your main reason is to hook up your TV to the internet, because older Blu-Ray players are not as likely to have that feature.
Do you have a laptop computer? You could just watch Netflix etc. on that.

Sidebar: Why did HD device makers drop component video and adopt HDMI?
1. Convenience for consumer: One cable for video and audio.
2. Digital transmission of the signals: immunity to RFI/EMI and cable-length issues (up to a point).
3. (IMHO the most important reason of all for manufacturers and distributors): DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT (aka copy protection).
Component video is not encrypted, so a tech-savvy person could copy HD content carried by it. To prevent copying HD content, HDCP ("Highband Digital Content Protection") is used. HDCP encrypts HD content and checks every link in the chain from source to screen for full compliance (to prevent a "rogue" device in the chain from making copying possible). They even put an updated list of rogue devices on new Blu-Ray discs as they release them. At the content maker/distributor's choice, one of two things can happen if any link in the chain is not HDCP compliant: either it will display the content non-HD, or it will pop up a box on the screen saying that it can't play the content unless the non-compliant device is replaced.

Many of my standard DVD's are original movies. But I also bought many in the Singapore and Hong Kong markets as well burned some on my own PC with some software. Is there a Blu-ray player that will play all of them?

There are several DVD players without a region code. The best part is that they are typically the ones your see on sale for "dirt cheap" under $50 bucks. They are generally made without region coding. Most wont say "multi-region", but they usually are. Keep your receipt and all the packing just in case you need to take it back.
As for something that plays multi-region Blu-ray? Good luck. I am sure there are places on the "good ol' web" that could explain how to reset/unlock the region code in your DVD player. The positive side is that you can now play DVDs from just about anywhere. The down side is that you have now VOIDED any and all warranties by the manufacturer and Blu-rays still ain't cheap so it could get expensive if you have any Technical

You better believe it! I like to go to the day after Thanksgiving sales too. A group of us ladies gets up at 4:30 a.m. and goes to another ladies house for coffee and rolls and we look thru the ads and schedule where we will go when depending on when different stores open and we have a large vehicle we fill up a couple of times and have to have one ladies husband come and unload it and take it home so we can keep shopping without having to return home. We spend about 16 or 17 hours on the road between our town and several towns close to us.
