Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray Player?

Eric Ver L

I want to stream netflix and hulu plus, the player is WiFi ready but I have to use a usb wireless adapter in order to do so. I don't have my own internet, otherwise I'd just connect it by Ethernet. I'm currently using my neighbors WiFi. Earlier, I plugged in my no name wireless adapter from eBay to the player and a message popped up saying the adapter wasn't supported. The box says to refer to the owners manual for a list of compatible adapters but the manual doesn't have a list of compatible adapters. So, does anyone know which adapters would be compatible with the Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray player?

Answer
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but using a neighbour's broadband is a bit naughty. Even if they gave you permission (and you do have permission, right?) then they are still legally responsible for anything you download using their connection. There may even be a question of breaking the ISP terms and conditions of service.

All of the above said, and presuming there are no legal ramifications, then you don't have to rely on a USB wireless dongle. A wireless gaming adapter will work as well or possibly better. This is a wireless bridge device that connects to the wireless network and then provides an ethernet connection. Try Googling the phrases "wireless gaming adapter" or "wireless game adapter". You'll get lots of hits. Just skip the USB versions.

is this a good blu ray player?

Answer
Samsung BD-P1500/XEU is an excellent bluray player. I must say that the picture quality is just amazing. At first I was worried about getting the Samsung BD-P1500 bluray player because a lot of reviews complained that it freezes, skips chapters, or stops accepting discs. I've had mines for almost two weeks and haven't experienced a single problem at all, and I didn't even have to update it with the firmware. All the movies I played on it work perfectly and the dvd 1080p upscaling is excellent. All my dvds look fantastic and have better picture quality than before. Setup was a breeze; I connected this bluray player via 1.3 hdmi cable to my Samsung LN46a650 LCD tv. I watched Planet Earth Bluray and I was just blown away! The picture was so mesmerizing and just beautiful. This bluray player is definitely a winner. Overall I'm extremely happy with this bluray player!

Videos not available on youtube app on my Blu ray player?

Ok, so I have a Youtube app on my blu-ray player and every now and then it will say a video is unavailable and it will be skipped, does anyone know if this a copyright thing or something I can fix?

Answer
It is a copyright issue. Most likely the video contains copyrighted content that was not owned by the video creator.

The reason (if you're interested), is your Blu Ray player might not be able to serve you advertisements in the way that watching the video on a computer would, and that is why YouTube blocks it. Simply put, the copyright owners want to make money off of their content.

So no, unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that. Hope I was helpful!

how does Pandora work through Blu-Ray players?

Q. I have a Blu-Ray player with YouTube, Netflix, Blockbuster, and Pandora but I have no idea how to work the Pandora. I click a station and type things in and select them but they don't show up on my tv. Help?

Answer
Pandora works the same on the blu-ray player like on the computer.
First you should make an account. I recommend getting started on your computer and making stations on your computer- it should guide you through it.
Then sign in on your tv. If you're already signed in, you should sign out and sign back in to refresh it.
Next you can make more stations. To make a station you can either type in an artist you like or a song you like. It should show you some songs and you have to choose which one you meant. Then basically Pandora takes that song and finds songs that are similar to it. You can choose if you like a song and if you do it will play it more often. If you don't like the song it won't play it on that specific station. You can skip 6 songs per hour and 12 songs per day.
And that's basically it.

Just bought a new blu ray and it skips once or twice during every movie we have played on it. It is only about a two second skip. Is it a problem with the player and should I take it back?

Answer
I would take it back and get a new one, don't let the store grantee expire.

Do you have to activate a movie thats on a blu-ray disc from a blu-ray player or r there any play restrictions

michaeljus

i noticed that some blu-ray players have a network adapter on them for internet connectivity, what is that for exactly, would it be because some movies have to be activated on that specific blu-ray disc player like you have to do with some computer software....

Answer
No, you do not need to be connected to the internet or to anything to play a blu ray movie, and nothing needs to be activated. Each individual movie has the option (per the studio) to limit the resolution output to the analog output to keep the highest res signal from pirates. The only restrictions that I'm aware of are the same ones that are common on DVD

That would be, country region codes, and locking in FBI warnings so that you can't skip them. So far on blu ray, region codes do not exist on most discs, where on DVD, it's normal to have them.

The internet capability is more about loading content, unlocking possible features of a disc that needs internet connnection like bonus material, and for any possible firmware updates to the player itself.

I don't know how old you are, but you may or may not remember the DVD/Divx disaster. When DVD was new, there was the standard DVD camp and the divx camp. They wanted every divx player to connect to the internet to unlock divx movies. So you rent a movie for 5 bucks, unlock, you can play all you want for 48 hours or something and then that's it. It you wanted to buy it, and unlock it for good, you paid extra.

I hated the idea, so did just about everyone else, because it was a pay per play idea. It bombed and cost a lot of people a lot of money.

What is the durability like with Blu-Ray discs?

I just got a Blu-Ray player. I have kids and they like to watch movies. How are Blu-Rays as far as scratching and skipping? Should I be very wary of letting my kids use them?

Answer
the would be wary of letting them use it regardless. but blue-ray discs are more scratch resistant then standard dvd's. thats not to say they are scratch proof though!

I cleaned it the other day with the lens cleaner, but it is still skipping. Anything else i can do before buying a new dvd/blu ray player?

Answer
Don't bother doing much more than you just did with that old DVD player. I suggest buying a new $40 Sony DVD player at Walmart if you have a standard TV (old non HD tube TV's). Otherwise, if you have a HDTV (high definition TV), you should bite the bullet anyway and upgrade to Blu-ray like you mentioned and get HD picture and sound from Blu-ray discs. You can get good Blu-ray disc players for around $130 at Walmart.

why does my brand new blu ray disc skip while playing?

frankasaa

I got a brand new Blu ray inception as a gift, but when i played it on my lg bd player, also fairly new, it skips a few scenes when it reaches a certain point (ive experienced this twice, at different parts of the movie). this is the first time the player acted this way since i got it. Any ideas what the problem could be? The disc seems to look clean from scratches (it is brand new!)

Answer
Hook up your blu ray player to the internet and check for a software update. Most of the time it is out of date even if you bought it yesterday it may have been made a few months ago. Make sure there is no fingerprints on the disc as this will affect it also and if all else fails after unplug the player for ten minutes. good luck
