Where can I find a cheap Blu-Ray player?

I've looked around Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. The cheapest I've found is for $89 at Walmart and Target. The same Phillips model. I like Phillips. My 32" HDTV is a Phillips brand. But can I find a cheaper Blu-Ray player elsewhere?

I would not recommend buying the cheapest player in the market at all. What I would recommend is a Panasonic, they are the most reliable. I own a first generation player model BD-10 which is over 4 years old and played over 300 blu ray disc movies without any problems. If you read yahoo questions, you will notice that 95% of the problems on blu ray disc player are those bargain price players. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

Skyfall Blu Ray won't play!?

So I bought the new Slyfall Blu Ray and went to play it. The Blu ray kept stuttering and skipping and the sound would cut out. I put in the DVD, and it plays like a dream. Does the player use the same piece to play the DVD as it does for the blu ray? This has only happened on old discs or ones that were scratched and I've never encountered this before. just wondering if its the disc or my player.

These are what you have to check on your Blu-ray player to make sure, so that the Blu-ray disc will play.

-Have you downloaded and updated your Blu-ray player with the latest firmware, IF it needs that to play the disc, and NOT the last version that was on the manufacturer's web site.

-IF you have already updated your Blu-ray player with the latest firmware, and it still will NOT play. Could it be a parts problem, and has nothing to do with firmware update. Even the latest version will not help with that. IF it is a parts problem.

-Maybe it looks like a parts problem in the Blu-ray player. But all you need is just use a Blu-ray player laser lenses cleaner to clean the inside.

-IF you have another Blu-ray player try the Blu-ray disc in that player. IF it works then the Blu-ray disc has no problem. It would haveto be one of the other problems with the other player.

-Could it be the disc you got, has problem. Because in the production of say 3572 Blu-ray disc for a movie there got to be two or three disc that has problems. Who knows which one could it be, maybe it disc 72, disc 698 and disc 745. So bring it back and let the store you brought it from know. IF you got it from big name retailer like Best Buy and Target should let you exchange it.

-Last of all IF it still have problem after exchanging for another one. Maybe it is a parts problem in the Blu-ray player. IF you have already updated the player to the latest firmware, from the manufacturer's website and also have clean it with a Blu-ray player laser lenses cleaner. NO one that lucky or would want to get the the disc that also has problems in the mass production again. And anyway who knows which store it be shipped to in which city and state.

Hi, I have 2 main questions.....
1. Who do you think will win the race between HD Dvd and Blu-ray, and why? Who's winning so far?
2. Why are Blu-ray players so expensive vs. HD dvd players are so cheap?

Sorry to say, but Blu-ray Disc is the winning format.
Recently the HD DVD promotional group had a major blow just before the CES 2008, when Time Warner, including Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema and HBO said that they would be supporting Blu-ray Disc exclusively from May 31st 2008.
This means, that Blu-ray Disc has 70% of the market share of Hi-def discs being sold, with HD DVD having only 30%.

For you interest the studios supporting Blu-ray Disc are
Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, HBO, 20th Century Fox, Buena Vista (Walt Disney, Pixar Animation, Miramax, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures), Sony Pictures (Columbia, Tristar, ScreenGems), MGM and Lionsgate.

While HD DVD has only Universal Studios, Viacom Paramount (Paramount Studios, Dreamworks, Dreamworks Annimation, MTV), and some other minor companies.

Also now, the average sales in the US, since this for Blu-ray is 83% of the market, with recent statistics saying around 93% of recent hardware sales were Blu-ray Disc players, since the Time Warner move, excluding the world's best, most upgradable Blu-ray Player, the Playstation 3, which many people buy.

Also in Japan 90% of people, are with Blu-ray, and 95% in Australia, and around 80% (I think) in Europe.

Also video rental chains Video Ezy in Australia, and Blockbuster stopped HD DVD rentals, and Target are now also Blu-ray Exclusive. You should see the Blu vs HD clips on Youtube, there was a hilarious based on Hitler, on the fall of HD DVD.

Now, HD DVD is really falling into the Betamax pit, especially, as not many companies endorsed HD DVD, like the Betamax, unlike Blu-ray and VHS, which have a lost of licensies. Although HD DVD has the backing of the DVD Forum, the Blu-ray Disc Association is now equaly as powerful, and large as DVD Forum now, with major electronics giants like Sony, Phillips, Panasonic, Hitatci, JVC, Dell, HP, Sharp, and LG supporting it.

In the Betamax/VHS wars, VHS started it's winning streak when it had around 70% of the market, which now Blu-ray has since Warner desicision.

Now based on reports, Intel(R) Supports both formats, and Microsoft still hasn't denyed the possibility of including an external Blu-ray Disc drive for the XBOX 360,instead of HD DVD.

When another major company drops, it will be the final death blow to HD DVD.

And about the prices of Blu-ray, it's only expensive as it's a new technology, like DVD was when it was released. Anyway Blu-ray is a far better technology, and the Blu-ray Disc Association don't have to rely on cheap players of the mass market adoption of Blu-ray Disc.

For those of you who've had the luxury of experience Blu-ray content, is it truly that amazing? Was the sound/picture quality what you expected, or was it even better? I'm targeting this question to the people who've experience Blu-ray with a 1080i/1080p TV. Which do you think is a better buy? HD-DVD or Blu-ray? Please be thorough with your answers.

Yes, it is that good. In reference to the above post, I have a 1080p 37" television, and even on the screen of that size, the picture is amazing. If you have a 60" screen, I can't even imagine. The Blu-ray picture even has a noticeable edge over my HD broadcast, and blows DVD out of the water. The clarity of the sound is unbelievable; even people with mediocre systems will notice some difference. Because of all the hype, I would have to say it lived up to all of my expectations, but did not exceed them.

As of now, I would say Blu-ray is the better buy for the sole reason of investment security. Blu-ray has enjoyed stunning disc sales and uptrending standalone player sales, in addition to the "trojan horse" of the PS3. Blu-ray's relative dominance in sales and higher amounts of exclusive content make it a smarter, albeit more expensive, investment. Really, if you want safe investments, I would wait until the end of the war.

Should I return my unopened HD DVD player and buy a PS3 now Warner has gone with Blu Ray?

I ordered an HD DVD player last week from Amazon, and the next day Warner announced they were going exclusively with blu ray. Should I just send it back now, get a refund and buy a PS3 instead? Is HD DVD doomed? I don't need a game console - I've got a PC - but I want to play HD movies on my new 1080p LCD TV.

I would return the player and get a Blu-ray player instead. However, there are plenty of HD options besides discs.

Vudu just released a set-top box capable of streaming/downloading HD movies to your TV via your broadband connection. The selection is limited (you can basically just buy the Bourne Trilogy) but their selection will expand. The cost per movie is about $3.99 to rent (24 hours) and about $15-$20 to own. The box is $399 so it's not cheap but if you like the convenience of HD movie viewing without having physical DVDs to worry about, it's not a bad option.

Xbox Live Marketplace currrently has the best selection of HD movies with prices below: SD=standard definition, HD=high-definition

HD TV Episodes -- 240 points ($3)
SD TV Episodes -- 160 points ($2)
HD Movies -- 480 points ($6)
SD Movies -- 320 points ($4)
Classic HD Movies -- 360 points ($4.50)
Classic SD Movies -- 240 points ($3)

However, Xbox 360 only offers an HD-DVD attachement($179) and does not currently plan to release a Blu-ray attachment.

If you prefer having a physical disc, Blu-ray is really your only option:

1) Among major movie studios, only Universal, Paramount, and Dreamworks support HD-DVD. Fox, Disney, Warner, Sony, Lionsgate, Newline all support Blu-ray exclusively.

2) Target only sells Blu-ray players and Blockbuster only rents Blu-ray discs (some HD-DVDs still offered in some stores)

Retailers are likely to stock fewer HD-DVDs in stores or allocate less shelf space to them so even if HD-DVD survives it will be like Betamax.

I don't have an HDTV, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or work for any of the tech companies.


If you prefer a physical disc, Blu-ray is your only option at this point.

I want the movie Transformers 2 on Blu-ray, but I have a strong feeling it will be one of the discounted films on Black Friday. I spotted in the Target ad for this week TF2 is only $23, but I'm not sure if I should buy it for that price or wait until Black Friday. How much do you think TF2 BD will be on Black Friday?

Can a Philips BDP5010 Blu-Ray Player stream video from a Windows computer?

I see that Target has the BDP5010 Blue-Ray player for $80 now. It has an ethernet port, and can play DivX files. Does anyone know if I can stream videos shared on a Windows computer (Windows 7 Ultimate, specifically)? Currently I am using an Xbox 360, but want to setup another TV and don't want to shell out $200 for another Xbox.

The ethernet port will only get you whatever content is offered as features of that Blu-Ray player..This could be Net-Flix-Pandora Radio-You Tube -Blockbuster or others.It is also possible it is only there for doing firm-ware updates..Check the features closely...

does my wireless usb adapter and my blu ray player need to be the same brand?

I have a sony blu ray player BPD-S270 and on the box it says I need a hdmi cable and a sony usb wireless lan adapter, I bought a different brand cable cause the guy at target said it didnt matter but I didnt ask about the usb. the box said sony's but i dont know if it matters or not???

It doesn't matter, that's just on the box so you'll spend more on a sony branded wireless adapter.

All wireless adapter work on a standard which is 802.11x, the current one is 802.11n as long as the blue ray drive and the wireless adapter are using the same standard, you'll be fine.

I want to see Harry Potter special features but i don't have a blu-ray player. What should i do? Need answers?

I think either target or wal-mart is going to have the 7th movie w/ special feat. on regular dvd. I plan on getting that one
