Why won't certain Netflix shows play on my Sony Blu Ray player?

It's not all shows, just certain ones (Torchwood and Doctor Who, for example). I get sound, but a messed up line-y scrambled picture. Other shows & movies play perfectly. These SAME shows play perfectly on my Wii (though I only have composite cables for it right now, so the picture quality is less than optimal).

I do the updates on my Blu Ray player frequently, and it's up to date now. I tried removing the Netflix account and re-adding it, no luck. I'm using an HDMI cable between my Sony TV and the Blu Ray, and it's hard-wired to my router by ethernet, not wireless.

Any ideas? I've run out.
@PoohBearPenguin - I have FiOS with 35mbps/35mbps, so I don't think bandwidth is the problem. It still happens even when nothing else at all is using our network. I'll look into the HD/SD settings, I wasn't aware they did that. Also thought about trying a component cable just for kicks to see if that makes any difference (though I don't expect it to).

Could be an issue with netflix, I had a problem with star trek voyager, it would play on the pc but not the ps3. So I called netflix and they told me it was an issue on their own end and the fixed it.

I bought an RCA BRC 11082 Blu-Ray player recently, noticing that it had Netflix Instant. For some reason however, all Netflix movies play in very low resolution. I have a terrific internet connection and an HDMI cord hooked up. Netflix Instant movies looked great on my X-Box and usually played in HD. Was I wrong to assume a blu-ray player should play Netflix in HD? Did I get a lousy blu-ray player?

How can I resolve this?

You already have it resolved because you have your x_box which you said Netflix Instant looks great on.

I don't have an X-Box, but I know people that stream Netflix via their Bluray player, X-box, Wii (non-HD) and PS3.

Seeing Netflix instant on all these platforms, I can tell you the pic is not always great. If the resolution sucks, blame Netflix, not the player. Streaming video often has lowered resolution that the hardware is capable of in order to give the user improved playback (no lag, glitching).

Your Bluray player is only a lousy Bluray player if it doesn't play Blurays.

I mean, c'mon...Netflix is even streaming to phones now. Your Bluray player should be judged on its disc playback and not its Netflix streaming ability.

Samsung blu-ray player issues, won't play Netflix, worked yesterday, then stopped?

So, I was watching a movie (Choose - completely irrelevant) on my Samsung blu-ray player. Then I stopped to cook dinner for my mother as a treat and I paused the movie. Well, when I come back to view it, it had shut itself off and when turned back on, Netflix could no longer work. I tried turning it off, waiting 10 minutes and turning it back on , but nothing worked. So finally, after a few more tries of that, I decided to move on and just leave it off until today. Well, same problem. It will turn on, make its little noise and then say no disc, but the little device will say "load". But there's nothing for it to be loading.
I left it on for a while, still not working.
So I called customer service... their offices are closed. PLEASE HELP! <3
P.S. , I don't know the make or model. Only my dad does, and he's not contactable.

Is this device new, old, or used? If it is, it could be defective.

Most new updated blu-ray players are built-in with an auto off feature. That means it will turn off by itself when the movie is on paused for too long. The blu-ray player just assumes that nobody is watching the movie and will shut off within 30 minutes or an hour.

You can find the model number under the blu-ray player. If it's not listed, you will have to ask your dad for that.

Have a professional examine the blu-ray player. If it's not fixable, you will have to buy a replacement.

One way is through your computer, where you just go to netflix on your computer, type in what you want to watch, and if it comes instantly, just click play and you can watch it on a computer, the only requirment being that you need internet or wifi. You can also stream through the wii. To do this, you will need to download the netflix channel, which is free in the channel store, which is already installed in the wii. Your wii will also need to be hooked up to the internet via wifi. There are also other streaming devices through which you can get netflix, such as the roku box from amazon. This is a small box that needs to be hooked up via wifi, and you download the netflix channel from the channel store for free. Roku also has other channel options, such as the amazon instant video channel, where you can rent of buy movies to be streamed to your tv.

I don't have a RoKu box. There are Blu-Ray players that have the ability to play NetFlix on demand content. I was hoping to find a Blu-Ray/DVD burner combo that would do the same. That would save me the approximately $100 that a RoKu box costs.

Blu ray recorders are sold in Japan, but I don't recall hearing about being able to record DVD or not, and I don't remember reading anything about special streaming like Netflix, blockbuster etc. Google japan and blu ray recorders for more info.

First you have to get the BluRay player connected to your home network. Run a Cat6 network cable from your router to the player or if the player has wireless, use it.

Sometimes you have to buy the optional 'dongle' to get a player to become wireless.

If yours is like this - do NOT buy the wireless dongle. It will run you about $80-$90.

Instead - go to BestBuy and purchase a Western Digital TV Live box for $99. Get a inexpensive HDMI cable (like the Media Bridge brand for $9-$20 from Amazon) to hook it up to your TV.

This little box gives you about 30 different apps and does not cost much more than the wireless dongle which might give you ... 8 apps? It is a much better device, gives you more apps, gets updated more frequently and lets you play computer video files from a USB flash drive.

Trust me - I did the $90 dongle for my Bluray player and it works, but the WD box works much better.

You do not need to have a smart tv if you purchase a smart blu ray player. Providing that your tv has the HDMI input. Smart HDTV is more expensive than not having one. Panasonic is the most reliable blu ray disc player in the market. They have had a model each year that is highly recommended by Home Theater Magazine from day one. I still use my first generation Panasonic blu ray disc player model BD-10. It is over 6 years old and played over 330 blu ray movies with one issue. It only required one firmware update about 3 years ago. Hope this will help you out.

Be careful. The inclusion of streaming apps in televisions and blu ray players is a "add on". I have 8 streaming apps on my Panasonic BluRay player. I have 28 on my WD TV Live box and my WD box has a better interface, gets updated every few weeks, streams from my PC or USB flash and HDD drives.

For $99 it is a much better device and experience. (And yes - it does have a Weather app).

My advice would be you get a good, basic BluRay player, but get your streaming apps from a media server like a Roku unit or the WD TV Live box.

BluRay players will normally try to give you OAR - Original Aspect Ratio.

If you pop in a modern TV show on a BluRay disk - it should exactly fill your screen because HD TV shows were shot in exactly 16:9 ratio.

But movies - are shot in dozens of different ratios. This will produce black-bars on most HDTV's and the size of the bars will vary based on the movie.

Most televisions have a "Aspect" button that will zoom in and stretch the image to fill the screen.

The down side is if the camera pans you will get a "fish eye" effect as the center of the screen is not stretched as much as the edges - but it will fill the screen.

Check your TV remote or the TV setup menu. The better televisions will 'remember' that HDMI2 needs to be zoomed in.
