Its gpu is a custom-made Nvidia called the RSX, exceeded in power only by the later 8000-series Nvidia cards.

It gives every user free access to an excellent online network that tells you which of your friends are online, what game they're playing so you can go join them, instant messaging, video/audio chat, and an excellent digital store with much free stuff and much cheap stuff.

It has a good web browser. You can install the best distribution of linux, Ubuntu Hardy, on it. It is the best blu-ray player in the world, and profile updates mean it will remain the best for a long time. All can play ps1 games. The better versions can play either all or most ps2 games. Hello. Having sooo much trouble with my current Laptop, and i regret not opting for a Macbook Pro.

But i'm stuck with my HP Pavilion dv6-3132TX Notebook (not exact one, exactly the same, just with a Blu Ray player and 8GB RAM, rather than 4GB). A friend of mine suggested i Dual boot my laptop to run both Windows 7 and Mac OS X, but i'm not sure how to do this, or if it is possible. I heard that playing with the Pavillion Drivers is a little bit risky, so i'm wondering if anyone has done it.

OSX will not run on any device that doesn't have Maciness ;-). Might I suggest getting Linux, its a free and Open Source OS. Ubuntu is a great distribution! If you would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 you can get Wubi, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer . Its so easy to do it with Wubi! It could never get easier. Otherwise give up Windows completely! http://www.ubuntu.com/

Its just as beautiful as a Mac also is much more powerful and your laptop is has more power than required.

I need a nice computer!?

I am a computer science major in my senior year and I am looking for a high performance notebook. I use Ubuntu Linux so the operating system doesn't matter. I really like the zareason verix 1656 (http://zareason.com/shop/Verix-1656.html). I have a weak spot for products made by small companies, but I really am looking for the most bang for my buck. I know of system 76 but I think the verix is better than anything they have.
My preferences:

-at least a core i7 processor (no amd brand)
-nvida graphics card, at least good enough to stream hd video from internet, greater than 500 mb ddr3 memory.
-hdd, I don't even care if it has one (I have plenty I can use)
-monitor has to be at least 15 inches or bigger.
-dvi or hdmi out
That computer looks really good, but it needs to be a notebook so I can bring it to class.

I chose the ps3 way back in early 2007 when people thought it sucked and now I'm one of the "lucky" ones with the 60gb launch version everyone wants. Well Ha Ha everyone the ps2 chips are gone by september

Then I will watch my ps3's resale value climb above $1000

The ps3 has a better cpu than gaming pc's, a good graphic accelerator, a blu-ray player, free online, a motion-sensing controller, 4 usb ports and card slots on the non-cheapo versions, built-in wireless on all current versions, upgradable hard drives, and mine plays all ps2 games as well as ps1. The ps3 also cures diseases by being hooked into the Folding@Home network which, as a network, is on record as being the fastest supercomputer ever created and the first to reach a processing speed of 1 petaflops. My ps3 has an OtherOS partition running ubuntu linux which makes up for all the pc functions that Sony's XMB OS doesn't do itself.

The playstation store just started renting and selling movies also. And they will release the playstation Home someday, lucky for me I don't care when.

If you turn out all the lights and look closely, you can see the ps3 emits an aura of pure superiority. By being in the effective radius of this aura long enough, you can become superior yourself. It is a very good thing to have around.

AMD 8 core 3.6ghz processor
8gb ddr3 1600
gigabite motherboard with usb 3.0 and sata 6gbs
blu ray bruner
all clear acrylic case
and a gtx 550 ti video card
and i am going to use ubuntu 11.10 untill windows 8 comes out
and for a harddrive i got some 200gb that i pulled out of a diffrent computer.

for the video card i dont want to spend over $150. i am not sure on the gtx 550 yet.

You could put some Patriot Extremes for your RAM

Asus carries some good internal blu-ray players and burners (what makes them nice is that their pretty quiet).

If you're not doing hardcore gaming, ASUS also carries a good quiet video card that is silent (no fan). It's the ENGT440. 1GB,128-bit,DDR3. It will support two monitors.

Also, Kingwin has a 500W power supply that's fanless, MORE SILENCE!

Can I use Mythbuntu for these things?

I'm looking for a new media center set up for my family room. I've looked at LaCie's LaCinema, but it would be nice if I could get *one* box to meet all my needs, so that I can declutter my entertainment center.

That being said, does anyone know if I can use Mythbuntu for the following items...
1) a DVR for an HDTV receiving it's signal from an Over-The-Air HD Antenna
2) a DVD player for said HDTV
3) a Blue-Ray / HD DVD player
4) a music player (from hard-disk drives and CDs)

I'd really like to hear back from anyone who thinks it can work, or has heard of success stories with similar set-ups. [Sorry if my question is too noobish.]

EDIT: I forgot to add that before considering Mythbuntu, I had been looking at this combo: LaCie's LaCinema, Channel Master CM-7000PAL Antenna HD DVR, and Philips BDP5010/F7 BD Live Blu-ray Disc Player (with upconversion and DivX capabilities, and an sd card slot).
EDIT2: Oh yeah, I forgot that we have older media formats that we use in our home (such as our old VHS, music cassettes, and our vinyl record collection), but I understand that I'll probably need to use separate devices to play them. I've been wary of playing VHS in our family room because of our large tv screen, so we have three dvd/vhs players in some of the bedrooms for that. I do however need to address the situation, so that we can watch those as a family.

1) Yes. MythTV is designed to operate as a HDTV DVR for various TV/Video sources including OTA tuners, satellite tuners, cable tuners and SD or HD video capture cards like the Hauppauge HD PVR (which can also receive and handle cable TV from a set-top box by the composite or component (HD) video outputs).

2) Yes, MythTV will function as a DVD player (provided the computer it is running on has a DVD drive obviously)

3) No, because Mythbuntu is Linux based, it cannot be used to play Blu-Ray Discs. This is because Linux (+ variants) and MythTV use an open-source license which means the entire source code of the software and Operating System must necessarily be released to the public in full to be legally compliant.

This is a problem because Blu-Ray discs have a special encryption technology that requires every hardware or software player to have a 'secret key' to unlock the disc and play the movie. In order to create Blu-Ray software or hardware, you have to sign a non-disclosure agreement with the appropriate licensing body. The agreement clearly states that you are forbidden by law from revealing the secret key. Since the entire source code for the software has to be released, it would effectively expose the secret key to the public, ultimately circumventing the Blu-Ray copy-protection mechanism which would be illegal. Additionally, Blu-Ray playback requires an encrypted HDCP (over HDMI) connection to the TV/Display. Again this HDCP mechanism would run into problems because it relies on various Operating System components being kept closed and secret from the public.

In other words, you would have to use a separate Blu-Ray player, or use instead a Windows based Media Center that includes Blu-Ray playback support or can play Blu-Ray discs through a third-party plugin (I think MediaPortal can do this).

4) Yes, MythTV is designed to play music and other content from Hard Disks, CDs, etc.

HP laptop will not feed video or audio to receiver?

When I plug my HP Pavilion DM4 into my Yamaha receiver, nothing is outputted to my TV or the receiver. The little red HDMI part doesnt even light up on the receiver. My laptop can detect that there is a TV on the other end of the system, but nothing shows up. The Blu-Ray player works and my primary desktop works perfectly through this combo. I am using Ubuntu 11.10(1) on the laptop and it didnt work on Windows 7 X64 either. Any input is appreciated.

Although I'm entirely biased towards Nintendo and I hate Sony, I'll try to make a point for both sides.

Poor graphics compared to XB360 and PS3 (729MHz CPU I think, 200somethin MHz ATi GPU), but still really good
No HDTV
No homebrew options (yet), so you can't use Linux or an alternative OS like you can with PS3
You need to put the Sensor Bar on your TV
No DVD/CD playback

System specs aside, the Wii is for Nintendo fans who want to play the latest sequels of their favorite series. I've just been playing Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and it is amazing, but if you don't like Zelda you might not want it (I'd never played a Zelda game before TP though, and I now love the series). PS3 is for more of the "hardcore gamer", whatever that could possibly mean, I guess it's for the graphics people, who think the same old-same old games with intensely better HDTV resolution graphics are great. I definitely say get a Wii, but if you like the stuff PS3 has to offer, save up your money, it might be a while before you can either afford it/the price comes down (no one REALLY needs a Blu Ray drive anyways...)
