Sony Blu-Ray Player..............?

I Brought Sony Blu-Ray player from US. I want to use it in India, so which adapter should i go for?

India power is 230Volts 50 Hz 3 pin round triangle
US Power is 120Volts 60Hz Typically on a Bluray would be 2 pin vertical flat blades without/with round ground pin

The question is whether you need an adaptor or a converter. You need to look up the Sony power requirements. Sometimes there is a little switch. If only 120V 60Hz, you need a power converter.

but does not convert the power, and you would damage the electronics if not designed to accept 230V.

Online shopping for electronics in India is difficult. Just stepping down the voltage from 230 to 120, still leaves the cycles phase difference.

Then of course you may be faced with region coding of Bluray discs

Most definitely you can watch Blu-ray in 720p! Blu-ray has a maximum resolution of 1080p, even 720p will be much clearer than a standard DVD.

Depending on the upscaler and DVD/Blu-ray player you have, regular DVDs will probably not look "better" on a high definition TV. Regular DVDs have a maximum resolution of 480 (PAL) or 576 (NTSC) , so what the player would do is scale and fill in data to populate all 720 vertical pixels.

Some players that has the Silicon Optix REON chip has great upscaling that makes standard DVDs look really good. But remember it is still trying to fill in data that is not there before.

Also keep in mind too, even if you don't have a upscaling player your TV will do the job of scaling the information to fit your TV. Remember that some where along the line, the regular DVD's 480p will have to be stretch to fit the DVD. Higher end TVs will have great upscalers where you don't even need a "upscaling" dvd player. Most Blu-ray players again are pretty good upscalers for normal DVDs as well.

Most definitely you can watch Blu-ray in 720p! Blu-ray has a maximum resolution of 1080p, even 720p will be much clearer than a standard DVD.

Depending on the upscaler and DVD/Blu-ray player you have, regular DVDs will probably not look "better" on a high definition TV. Regular DVDs have a maximum resolution of 480 (PAL) or 576 (NTSC) , so what the player would do is scale and fill in data to populate all 720 vertical pixels.

Some players that has the Silicon Optix REON chip has great upscaling that makes standard DVDs look really good. But remember it is still trying to fill in data that is not there before.

Also keep in mind too, even if you don't have a upscaling player your TV will do the job of scaling the information to fit your TV. A regular DVD on an upconverting 1080p DVD player won't match the resolution of a true Blu-Ray Disc on a Blu-Ray player. On the other hand, a Blu-Ray player won't give better resolution than an unpconverting DVD player in upconversion of a regular DVD.

In my opinion, and from my experience, it would be like comparing a 1080i (1280 x 1080 = 1,382,400 pixels) resolution to a 1080p (1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600) resolution. Therefore, an interlaced format is nearly half the resolution (i.e. every other vertical line is "interlaced" or blended as opposed to "progessive" which is where you get every line).

Bottom line, compare for your self by experimenting between the different choices available on the video market and you decide whether the difference justifies upgrading your system or not.

spiderman 3, blu-ray vs standard dvd?

hi ive got a ps3 and i have spiderman 3 on blu-ray and also on standard dvd, im also running my system at 1080i....ive watched the blu ray film and it is slightly better than normal dvd played through the ps3, but personaly i dont think the actual film is better quality by much, it is also still very bitty on blu-ray......................But when i play the second cd and go through the making of etc. the picture is as good as perfect........why is this... is it because its an old film and hasnt realy been upgraded....... hope this all makes sence.......i have only got spiderman as well so i cant comment on any other blu-ray film.....if you have any ideas about the blu-ray quality, and why this is, id appreciate it if you could shine some light on it for me..THANKYOU!!

Under optimum conditions Blu-ray can be great, but a number of things can make the image less than ideal, including:

- a poor master for the movie (only a few Blu-ray films are rated as exemplary, and too many are little better than DVD quality)

- watching too far from the screen to see the detail improvement (Blu-ray should be more detailed, but if you watch from "too far" away the improvement over DVD isn't as obvious. Note that the advertized 6x increase in resolution is actually more like 20-30% maximum). Similarly, a small screen reduces the ability to see improved resolution.

- watching at less than 1080p. Unless the HDTV is actually 1080p ... i.e. 1920x1080 pixels, 1080i is actually downsampled to 720p (or whatever the vertical resolution of the display actually is .. often 768 pixels), which isn't nearly as big an improvement over 480 as 1080 is.

- using an incorrect setting on the Blu-ray player (e,g, 1080i output may be less sharp than 720p)

- using an inferior cable type (HDMI is best, Component can be as good, but may not be since it can be artificially limited to lower resolution. Composite or S-video won't pass an HD signal at all)

As to why the extras would be better than the movie ... that's unusual since often the extras are presented at SD resolution not HD, and look worse. But occasionally they are done in HD video and can look as good (or if the movie is poor quality ... better than) the movie. That's my guess in this case. Movies often look inferior to HD Video camera footage ... which is why stores often use HD video as demo material (or animation, which also looks great in HD ... but also in DVD)

Blu-ray has finally won the high definition format war, but that is just the beginning. There is a lot of confusion out there among the general public about the difference between DVD and Blu-ray discs. Although Blu-ray discs look exactly the same as DVDs in size and shape there are many differences between the media, including storage capacity, laser technology, disc construction, image resolution and player compatibility.

1.Storage Capacity
Storage capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB), like computers and iPods. The more GB the disc has more information it can hold.

â¢DVD- Single layer DVDs can store about 4.7 GB of data, Double layer DVDs, or DVD-9s, can store twice the amount of data at 8.7 GB.
â¢Blu-ray- Single layer Blu-ray discs store approximately 25 GB of data,

2.Laser Technology
Lasers are used in both media to read the information stored on the disc. As the disc spins the laser reads the information and transfers both picture and sound to the television.

â¢DVD- DVD players use a red laser at 650nm wave length to read DVD discs.
â¢Blu-ray- Like the name suggests Blu-ray players use a blue laser to read the stored information. Blue laser wavelengths are shorter than the red at 405nm and are about two and a half times smaller in diameter than red lasers.

3.Disc Construction
Physically, Blu-ray and DVD discs are identical. Both media have grooves or pits on their bottom layer than enables the laser to penetrate through and read the stored information.

4.Image Resolution
Image resolution is measured by the number of vertical lines times the number of horizontal lines of light in a picture. It is represented by the number of horizontal lines going across the screen like 480, 720 or 1080. The higher the number the higher the resolution and more detailed the picture.

5.Player Compatibility
Some of us are still recovering from the VHS to DVD format switch of almost 10 years ago, slowly upgrading our VHS collections to DVD. Now, there is a new, better format on the horizon and many are still skeptical. However, youâll be happy to hear that all Blu-ray players support DVDs.

Fear not technophobes, the transition from DVD to Blu-ray will be relatively painless once the price of Blu-ray players starts to come down. With the exception of storage capacity perhaps the best thing Blu-ray has going for it is its higher image resolution and compatibility with standard DVDs. I need a computer with a blu ray player, that can lay horizontal for less than $500..help!?

Vertical vs Horizontal for the most part is the case.

I bought a custom piece built (not mass built) PC for $500 a couple years ago, from my local store front computer store. It is a low power AMD system with on built GPU, in a case that works vertically or horizontally, with DVD drive, 500GB HD, and Windows 7 license. I finagled a KB/mouse set for 1/2 price with that deal.

It reckon if you could build a similar system today from a retailer with enough volume to sell cheaper, , you should be able to build a system in that budget including a BD-Reader and app.

I have a friend who is a complete tech freak he goes out an buys the news shit just to have i think he is dumb anyway he got a new HDTV an a blue ray player an i watched a few movies on it an he had to point out it was Blue ray lol i did not c a big difference an told him he wasted his money an he got pissed lol i dont c a big deal with blue ray HDTVs they are kinda cool yes but will i one day have to start buy them even tho im 100% happy with DVDs a good clean picture is wut i like an i save 60 bucks lol will they stop making dvds an just do blue ray so i have to get a blue ray player

Your opinion is totally valid. That said, Blu-ray can give a better picture than DVDs ... under the right conditions. Whether it is worth the extra money is entirely up to the viewer.

The facts are:
- To see any improvement you need to watch on an HDTV
- Even on a 40" 1080p HDTV about 25% of consumers see NO difference between Blu-ray and DVD (and another 30% don't feel the difference is worth paying more for) ... This was proven by Toshiba in a blind test
- Blu-ray is at least 2X the resolution of DVD (1080 vs 480 vertical pixels), but when DVDs are upscaled to pseudo-HD (by an HDTV or by an upscaling DVD player ($50-$70)) and shown on a smaller >> moderate size HDTV there is little difference. (Upscaling quality varies, with better players being very good indeed)
- Resolution is only the 4th most important determinant of image quality (after contrast, color accuracy and color saturation).
- ALL Blu-ray movies are "better" than DVDs, but many are not significantly better because the film they are based on are grainy (often because the Director chose them to be) or otherwise compromised (e.g. faded, overly smoothed, etc when remastered for HD).
- There is superior sound on Blu-ray disks ... but it's only available to those with top end equipment (and even then most consumers don't hear a significant improvement).
- Many viewers watch at distances beyond optimum and therefore can't see the difference in clarity between DVD and Blu-ray
- Blu-ray STILL accounts for under 25% of disk sales
- More new films are released on DVD than on Blu-ray (although all blockbuster films are released on Blu-ray).
- The vast majority of existing movies and TV shows will never make it to Blu-ray
- DVD is here for at least another decade.

Bottom line: Blu-ray is a premium priced HD alternative to DVD which at best can be breathtaking, But on average is only marginally superior to DVD (on a good upscaling player).

That said, the price of Blu-ray players is falling and there is currently little reason NOT to buy a Blu-ray player (since they upscale and play DVDs well) IF YOU NEED A NEW PLAYER. That way you can play either Blu-ray or DVD disks ... reserving Blu-ray for visually spectacular titles.

Personally, I have 2 Blu-ray players but still buy primarily DVDs, reserving Blu-ray for visually compelling movies ... and I have a top end 1080p projector / 110" screen / 7.2 audio system in a dedicated home theater. people who claim night and day difference between DVD and Blu-ray don't have a good DVD upscaling player.

Who watched the Leafs vs Habs game in 3D?

It was the first ever hockey game in 3D so I was just wondering how it was. Same as normal television? Or something so good that people should buy 3D TV's now?

I watched that game in 3D. My TV was manufactured in 2007 and is 3D ready. Before they stopped making them - I bought a Samsung 56" DLP rear projection TV in 2008, so I had a 3D ready TV for 2 years before getting any 3D content.

Eventually, I believe all newer TVs will all be 3D ready. And all 3D TVs double as great 2D sets.

The game in 3D was different than traditional 2D. In 2D your eyes never change focus. It's like looking at a painting. Your eyes move across the surface, but your focus is constant. In 3D you're focusing changes. Focusing on things close to you, focusing on things in the distant. When the puck goes in the air, you can judge where it's going to land - near or far. In 3D you really notice how the players appear vertical to the ice surface. Crowd shots were really good and they did show the crowd more than normal, which I wished they'd do in all their broadcasts. Game score graphics appeared to be on the TV screen surface, while the game itself appeared further back, inside the TV. In 3D, you're more aware of the surroundings. It's very much like being there, looking through a window, rather than staring at a moving picture. They showed more shots from ice level behind the glass and kept on them longer than what we're accustomed to in 2D broadcasts. I enjoyed it and really felt part of a live 3D experiment.

The 3D glasses the televisions use are active shutter glasses and as you may have noticed, the lenses are slightly tinted. That does effect the brightness a bit, but doesn't ruin the effect.

Should hockey be in 3D at all? 3D viewing even on a 3D ready TV will always be a choice. I've always been interested in 3D images, so I love it. Is 3D better than 2D? I really wouldn't say it's better. It's just deeper (pun intended). I'm sure other sports will look even better in 3D. The fact that hockey's ice surface is enclosed by boards and glass, limit the camera options in getting an unobstructed view. I'm not a football or basketball fan, but I can see how those sports would really shine in 3D, because the playing field is open.

Something so good that people should buy 3D TVs now? Depends on the individual. Right now, you can get more 3D content on blu ray than what is broadcast on TV (for me anyway). The majority of my viewing is 2D HD. But being 3D ready for those movies or occasional special events on TV right now is a nice option.

I've heard that the heat going up from being vertical melts the blu-ray player. Is this true? (only logical answers please)

No that is not true, if it were then Sony wouldn't design the PS3 so that it could be placed vertically.

Should I upgrade to Blu-ray with an Infocus X2 SVGA projector?

I have an Infocus X2 SVGA projector that is hooked up to a sony 5-disc upconvert dvd player through HDMI. I was wondering if I purchased a blu-ray player, would I notice any difference in picture quality even though the projector is SVGA? The projector is HDTV compatible.

The catch is that SVGA is 4:3 aspect. So in order for your projector to upscale the correct width of 16:9, you will loose even more vertical resolution. So, you MAY notice a slight increase in visual quality due to the superior source; but it will probably be negligible.
That said, since Blue-Ray has won the format war, you can safely upgrade that component now and start saving for your HD projector ;).

Help me choose between two laptops please?

I'm stuck between two laptops, both come with Windows 8.

The Lenovo Y580 is a 15" with 1080p and comes with a blu ray player. It has an NVIDIA GForce graphics card and of course an i7 2.4 GHZ, basically it's a powerhouse. Problem is it comes with Windows 8 and no touchscreen, which I know is clunky to use. I could install ClassicShell, but it's still a hassle to get around its start menu without touchscreen.

The other choice is a Sony VAIO E Series 14". It is a touchscreen and has a weaker graphics card (Radeon HD) but it's still powerful. The problem is it is only 900p. I'm worried that may hamper my productivity when I look through Google Docs or it may make blu rays look wierd.

Do you think the ability to comfortably use Windows 8 is worth sacrificing 180 pixels of vertical screen space? and 320 pixels of horizontal screen space? Or should I go with the powerhouse Lenovo laptop (maybe I can buy Win 7 and dual boot on it)?
My primary use will be web browsing and documents....but I may play the occasional video game on it, use it as a backup blu ray player, and may even be going into an Engineering major this fall...

get the more powerful one, touch is dumb on laptops unless it folds completely over, and then congrats, you now have a heavy ipad.

They showed more shots from ice level behind the glass and kept on them longer than what we're accustomed to in 2D broadcasts. I enjoyed it and really felt part of a live 3D experiment.

The 3D glasses the televisions use are active shutter glasses and as you may have noticed, the lenses are slightly tinted. That does effect the brightness a bit, but doesn't ruin the effect.

Should hockey be in 3D at all? 3D viewing even on a 3D ready TV will always be a choice. I've always been interested in 3D images, so I love it. Is 3D better than 2D? I really wouldn't say it's better. It's just deeper (pun intended). I'm sure other sports will look even better in 3D. The fact that hockey's ice surface is enclosed by boards and glass, limit the camera options in getting an unobstructed view. I'm not a football or basketball fan, but I can see how those sports would really shine in 3D, because the playing field is open.

Something so good that people should buy 3D TVs now? Depends on the individual. Right now, you can get more 3D content on blu ray than what is broadcast on TV (for me anyway). The majority of my viewing is 2D HD. But being 3D ready for those movies or occasional special events on TV right now is a nice option.
