Blu-ray player vs PS3?

I am torn between buying a Blu-ray player or a Playstation3. I play my Xbox360 very often and I'm sure I would play a PS3 if I had one. However, I haven't seen any games that have really made me want a PS3 over my Xbox. So, what do you guys think? Should I go with a Blu-ray player or a PS3 that allows me to game and watch Blu-ray movies?

If you think Blu-ray player only, do you have any that you suggest?

The PS3, right now, is hands-down the best combination of price and features in a Blu-Ray player. It should be your choice even if you do not plan to buy a single game for it.

There are actually three different levels of Blu-Ray firmware, which controls how well the player handles all of the extra features that can come on a Blu-Ray disk. The PS3 is Blu-Ray 2.0, the highest level. It has a very powerful processor and lots of memory. Picture quality is outstanding, both in native Blu-Ray and upscaling regular DVDs.

The only downside is the PS3 controllers are radio-controlled, as opposed to infra-red. That means most "universal remotes" (which are IR) will not control a PS3.

Yes it is. In fact because it comes with internet built in and regular updates, this made it the best resort for a blu-ray player before current BD-Live enabled models became available. The only minor detail is interactive blu-rays. Some of them are a little difficult on a controller LoL. If you plan to delve deep into blu-rays, I suggest getting the PS3's Blu-ray remote. I did and don't regret it one bit. Also made it easier for my wife to watch movies without having to come get me :).

The BEST Blu-ray player is the Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD (according to Consumer Reports -- this is the US version of the BDP-LX70) -- largely because of the high-end video processing built in -- but the PS3 at about $400 is a fraction of the $1000 US price, and the choice of many home theatre installers.

One advantage of the PS3 -- ignoring it's gaming ability -- is that it can be updated fvia firmware and has gone from a profile 1.0 to 1.1 player in recent months and is now profile 2.0 (The final step -- which adds Internet connectivity).

Many early adopter consumers -- who tend to be technically literate -- consider the PS3 the best player.

The quality of the video image from the PS3 is as good or better than most stand alone players ... certainly anything in the price range.

The only decision is whether you can accept the looks of the PS3 ... although some people simply hide it -- and remote control it -- rather than adding to their other equipment.

As a blu-ray player the PS3 is just as capable as the standalone players (better than some). With the BD remote you have the same functionality, and need never use it as a games machine.

When I first purchased my PS3 I intended on buying a standalone blu-ray player as well, I have since changed my mind as the PS3 offers everything I need.

The PS3 is the most powerful console on the planet, it will store and play mp3's for music and mp4 movies. You can use it to browse the internet or of course play games. Between the raw power of the processors and huge storage of the blu-ray there are some pretty amazing games. Look at games like Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear 4, Unreal Tournament and Gran Turisimo,

The reason the PS3 is such good value is because Sony subsidize the production cost. They make their money on the license fees from games, not the console itself.

How can I make my Playstation 3 Blu Ray player picture less fluid?

I just bought a new TV and the refresh rate is higher than the old one (120hz vs. 60hz.) It was a little too fluid for some shows, causing blurriness and choppy images. I was able to adjust the setting for the TV picture, but when I am watching a movie on my PS3 I encounter the same problem. Does anyone know how I can adjust the setting on my PS3 so that the picture appears less fluid? Thanks.

A year or so ago, Blu-Ray was in transition... it was pretty new, and the Blu-Ray people has just announced profiles 1.1 (which offers picture in picture) and 2.0 (which offers online interactivity). Shortly thereafter, these features were added to the PS3 with a software download... other players generally couldn't be upgraded at all for the new stuff.

In the early days of DVD, there were many players released with small bugs... the main reason a bunch of players didn't play DVD-R was that there was a bug in the early reference code (the code that DVD Forum Licensees could use in their players as a starting point) that prevented DVD-R or RW from playing properly. With Blu-Ray, the potential for such errors is even higher... so most players can be updated somehow.

Sony is at the heart of the Blu-Ray world (they're not the only company making decisions, but they are one of the leaders), and the PS3 is what they use as their reference platform. So fixes for Blu-Ray go out for the PS3 first and often.

That's still true today, but Blu-Ray is far more stable than it was a year ago... new players are probably just fine at this point; major bugs will probably be dealt with, even if their update schemes are less often or sophisticated.

When I got my PS3, it was not only the best Blu-Ray player, but among the cheapest. Today, the PS3 is still $399, but other Blu-Ray players are available for much less... though check the details. The cheap ones are less likely to support 1.1 or 2.0 features... those may or may not matter to you. I still think the PS3 is among the best Blu-Ray players, but it was kind of a no-brainer last year, now you could debate price vs. features.

Of course, the PS3 is also a game machine, a web browser, and a home media players. I can put a video I shoot on my HDV camcorder on a memory stick and play it back on the PS3 (or over the network, for that matter). I can use the PS3 as a music jukebox, with access to all my digital audio (locally or over the network). You really could use it for a video jukebox, too, with a bit of work... you can user-upgrade the HDD to 500GB or so (laptop-style 2.5" HDD.. the user manual shows the procedure). So it's pretty nice, but if these features mean nothing to you, you may not think of it as such a good deal.
