Do region free blu ray players also play any sort of DVD?

Elizabeth

I want to buy the new Hollow Crown DVD but I don't to wait a year. Also I want a Blu ray player b.c I need one lol. I know that Blu ray can play DVD but can region free also play DVD?

Answer
It depends on the player and on how far the unlocking goes...

You can buy a Blu-ray player that is unlocked for DVD only. This will play any region locked DVDs (codes 1~6), but it will only play Blu-rays for the zone you live in, i.e. Zone A - American continent, Zone B - Europe, etc. So, a player unlocked like this would play DVDs from around so you could buy the Hollow Crown DVD and play it.

Buying a fully unlocked Blu-ray player (Any Blu-ray zone + any DVD region) is possible but it is very expensive.

The alternative is to use a PC and some copy software to make a back-up disc that plays without having to worry about regions or zones. Google is your friend :-)

american blu ray, european ps3?

HAZE

I have star trek original series 1 on blu-ray that I won in the usa. I was wondering if it will work on my ps3. I haven't opened the box yet, as if it doesn't work, I intend on selling it.

Answer
I'm guessing that you are living outside of North or South America...

If so, you have to know that Blu-Ray discs are geographically zoned and most likely you are in a different zone, so you won't be able to read your American Blu-Ray.

I was told that the technology to de-zone a Blu-Ray player does not exist yet (but will eventually come out someday).

Should I get a Playstaion 3 or just a blu-ray player?

KT21

Alright so I already have an Xbox 360, and can't decide if I should upgrade to a PS3 or just stay with my 360 and buy a blu-ray player. Are the PS3's graphics really that much better than the 360's? How's the online gaming experience? ETC. I know in you can now get a 120GB PS3 for about $300. Is it worth it?
Sorry forgot to say this.......... I don't have the money to buy a PS3 right now so I was thinking about selling my 360 to get a PS3. That's the question I meant to ask. I found a great blu-ray player for $100. So should I just buy the blu-ray player or sell my 360 to get a Playstation 3?

Answer
most people get the ps3 cuz it has blu ray then again they both have outstanding graphics. ps3 has bigger online rooms for intense kill zone 2 big online room in that game. they are both good in a way dont believe the other people who say one console is better than the other cuz its not true both have their flaws and both have good things just its up to the buyer to decide if u have a 360 might as well get the ps3 some games are only for a specific console u know. like kill zone only for ps3 and gears of war only for the 360 both outstanding games with killer graphics so its up to u man. its worth buying both consoles. period. i have both and no complains so far so yea its worth it

I tried looking on amazon (.com and .co.uk) and was not all too sucessful.

What would be the best home theater option?

TODD

I have a 1000 watt panasonic home theater blu-ray in a box. It has quit working. I had always been impressed by the sound quality. But i noticed I hardly used the unit as surround sound, because I have to open the cabinet to use it. I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY COMPARABLE UNITS TO THE ONE I HAD(as far as sound quality ), THAT ARE JUST SURROUND, BUT THE receiver is IN THE SUB. I noticed eBay has a lot of knockoffs like this(jvl, divinci junk). I was going get a surround and a blue- ray player. Or should I go with the Samsung 1000watt blu-ray in a box, for $250?

Answer
All home-theater-in-a-box systems in your price range are 100% cheap crap. Sorry, but that's the truth. They're built badly, use low quality parts, and you cannot make any speaker substitutions with them.

And, your Panasonic DIDN'T have 1000 watts, companies who make this cheap crap lie, and in a very big way, about the power. It likely had 15 watts, at best.

The only system in your price zone that I could grudgingly recommend would be the Onkyo 3500, going for $249 on Amazon. Onkyo makes so-so speakers, but at least you'd have a proper receiver as the heart of the system. Then, just add a separate disc player.

Better than that would be to get a separate 5.1 speaker system made by a company that makes good speakers, such as a Polk 6750 set from Newegg for $170, then add a solid 5.1 receiver, such as the Yamaha 373 from Amazon for $177. Again, with a disc player to add of your choice.

You give a listen to my suggestions, and you'll hear how much better those units sound than your dead Panasonic.

Where can I buy a region free 3D blu ray Player?

Answer
If you mean "Region free" to play DVDs (as opposed to any zone A; B or C Blu-rays) then in the UK Richer Sounds sell the 3D capable Sony BDPS480 for £99. Doing multi-region for DVD is pretty easy.

By comparison, buying a machine that will play Zone A; B or C Blu-rays is a far more expensive thing to do. You'll be looking at a minimum spend of around £250. This will get you 3D, multi-zone Blu-ray and multi-region DVD though. That will get you the LG BP620 with a hardware chip installed to allow multi-zone Blu-ray. At the moment it's only a couple of LG models, then Pioneer and then Oppo players that can be made Blu-ray multi-zone.

Hope this helps
