I'm interested in connecting a Playstation 3 system to an HDTV using HDMI cables. I've seen some on eBay for about $10 shipped. I've also seen HDMI cables made by Monster Cable selling for over $100 at Circuit City.

So....seriously.......if you don't know, don't try to get all technical and stuff and pretend you know. Please let the expert and experienced people answer:

Would you be able to spot the difference in the picture quality of the cables whenplaying a video game? How about when watching a DVD through the PS3--would the expensive cable really perform better?

Thank you.

Answer
The content on an HDMI cable is digital, so for almost all circumstances, the $100.00 Monster cables are NOT going to give you a better picture than a mediocre cable (Not "cheap", see below). You can compare this to downloading a text file from a website on a Dell PC or an Apple Mac. The file is still the same digital data, even though the machines are considered completely different.

At the same time, the ultra cheap cables can be made so poorly that they allow noise ingress. With HDMI, this "noise" does not manifest as the static we are all too familiar with when our radio is too far from a station, but as artifacting in the video and audio, or in extreme cases, a loss of audio or video entirely.

That being said, you should also understand that places like Best Buy and Circuit City have "incidentals" (Cables, power strips, cords, brackets) at a much higher markup (often over 200%) than their core hardware (amplifiers, televisions, DVD players).

The only time I have ever seen a difference in "inexpensive" cabling versus the high dollar items some companies provide is when you have extremely long cable runs to contend with in interference laden environments (like through the ceiling of an office, with fluorescent lights and data cabling). Even then, only the super cheap cabling proved problematic.

I recommend you locate reasonably priced cables (inexpensive, not "cheap"), from a retailer who will support you after the sale. Personally, I use Comprehensive Video for most of my needs, both in and out of the office.

Here is their site: www.comprehensivevideo.com

You can do what you like, but I'd rather spend $28.00 on a 3 foot HDMI cable than $100.00 for some glitzy, branded cable that will only see the space between my TV and my wall. That extra money would buy you a game for your PS3 or a couple of Blu-Ray movies...
