Im looking for a tv that has good video and audio but more specifically video quality. And i was wondering if there are any brand of televisions that i should avoid getting or keep my eye out for.

I agree with KV92's assessment about brands. If you are on a budget, I would particularly recommend Panasonic.
Since video quality is important to you, keep in mind that a television's picture will never be better than its source. That cheap DVD player that worked for your old square TV may not play well with widescreen (16:9 or 1.85) TVs; ditto for the standard cable service.
Whenever possible, try to get HD content, either by upgrading your cable (and cable box) or watching certain (but not all) stations over the airwaves. Also, when buying DVD movies, try to get the widescreen (albeit never HD) versions.
If you do watch fullscreen (4:3 or 1.33) content, be sure to adjust the aspect ratio accordingly -- you'll want to see a square picture with black bars on the sides. Otherwise, the picture will fill the widescreen by being 50% too wide. On your remote control, the button to adjust aspect ratio may be called "picture size", "format," "display," or similar (every manufacturer has their own term for it). Some Insignia televisions actually have an "auto mode" for aspect ratio, which I think is intelligent.
On a 42" television, you might be able to tell that a Blu-Ray movie is sharper than a DVD, but it's not like the DVD is going to pixellate or otherwise look ugly; it will just look slightly softer. Still very watchable.
Whatever you're connecting to the TV, be sure to use HDMI or Component cords. The cheap Composite cords that come packaged with DVD and even Blu-Ray players won't get you the best video, though you can use their red and white parts for stereo audio if you're using Component cords for video. (meanwhile, HDMI carries audio and video)
So get a Blu-Ray player if you're so inclined, but at the very least, consider a new DVD player if your old one is cheap -- pay for a name brand, but don't pay extra for the "upscaling" feature, which can actually distort the picture.
Other things you don't have to pay extra for:
- 120 Hz or 240 Hz. HD content actually tops out at 60 Hz, which is the standard refresh rate of LCDs. Don't believe the marketing hype about "motion blur" -- it may have been an issue for early LCDs, but not any that you'd find in a store today. Also, (pointlessly) upconverting a 60 Hz video tends to make it look cartoonish.
- 1080p. Anyone who says they can tell the difference between 1080p and 720p from more than five inches away is lying. There's nothing wrong with 1080p, it just shouldn't be the tie-breaker in your decision.

What is a 3D home theater system?

I am buying a home theater system today, and everything is 3D/blu ray home theater systems. I know what a blu ray player is. But what is 3D home theater system?
I don't have a 3D tv and is that a requirement?

I would not recommend any of those home theater in a box. They are not flexible for adding or upgrading. It is designed for you to watch movies with surround sound only. If it does not have an optical audio cable input then you would not be able to connecting and hear anything except from the dvd or blu ray disc movies. They are trying to push the 3D system, it can still play your blu ray and dvd movies. Keep in mind to have 3D you will need a 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray disc movie and 3D glasses. At this time there are only about 50 title in the market for 3D. I would recommend you look at an Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. This is much better than a home theater in a box. Add a Panasonic blu ray disc player model BD-65, 75 or 85 and you have a nice system for around $500. Hope this will help you out.
