NO. you can not change the unit to make it a universal player. There are only handful of manufacturer that makes a universal player. Pioneer Elite and OPPO are the two company that makes universal player that are very good in quality and reliability. Hope this will help you out.

I have a Sony BDP-S360 high definition Blu-ray player. I'm not sure if it's region free. If it's not I am wanting to make it so, but is there a downside to it at all? Why does everyone not just do it? I just want to be able to play DVDs bought overseas from eBay is all. Thank you!

Region code mods aren't available for all DVD players. A DVD region code mod won't affect the Blu-Ray region code, only DVDs. Region code mods will only work in some models depending on where they are purchased. Region code mods on US bought players are less likely to work than the same mod on an identical DVD player bought elsewhere. Here's the one for your player

1) Make sure there is no disc in tray
2) Press the "HOME" key on the Sony BDP remote control
3) Press number keys "1389310"
4) Power off.
5) Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on
6) Try different region code DVDs to see if the mod worked

Assuming a mod works I've not heard of any downsides.
