Okay, here's my scenario. I have a Xbox 360 Elite with a HD-DVD add on running to a Panasonic Vera top of the line 58" Plasma through HDMI. I have a 80gb (best I could buy at the time), Running to the same television through HDMI.

What upscales standard DVD's better? Is there a noticeable difference, if so what.

Appreciate your time in advance!

By the way, this is my current setup, and the 80gb part is my PS3. Sorry about that, I typed it really quickly.

Answer
the ps3 will not upscale DVD's straight out of the box-you have to download the firmware.

contrary to popular beleif the ps3 is not a native upscaler-because the machine can output 1080p DVD video as standard people assume it automatically upscales-it does not.

if you have not downloaded the required firmware the ps3 cannot upscale DVD's.

having said this standard playback on a ps3 can rival even the best players out there so not to worry.

and for all the hype the 360 fanboys love to come out with-the 360 is not a native high definition DVD player-the ps3 is.

nb:-what the poster below fails to mention is that HD-DVD is dead in the water-blu-ray won the high-def DVD scrap months ago and it won't be long before HD-DVD titles will be harder to get hold of than rocking horse poo because the film companies are not producing their new titles on this media anymore.

you find it is all blu-ray now-and only the ps3 plays blu-ray out of the games machines.

you can have as much DVD graphics muscle as you like-but it will not do you any good if you cannot get anything to play on it is there! and in any case with the 360 you have to buy the add-on to upscale-you can download it for free off the sony website.

you can buy a 360 if you want (don't forget the extended warranty-you will need it!) but only if you do not want to watch movies in high def.

so there really is no case to answer on the part of the ps3.

1-0 to the ps3 in the high-def movie stakes methinks!.

What are some of the better Blu Ray players that stream Netflix?

Unfortunately, I currently have the super slow bd-p 1500 blu ray player and I am thinking of upgrading to get Netflix streaming. Thanks!

Answer
At the moment your choices are still somewhat limited, but that will be changing soon. If you want something _right_now_ you'll still be looking at the new Samsung models that load considerably faster. The BDP 1600, which replaced the 1500 model, or there is always a higher up/more expensive Samsung you could get. Or you could go with an LG. I think the Samsung would be a better choice. You could find a 1600 on Ebay for about $185. Walmart sells (online) the model 1590 which is basically a 1600 with a slightly different face to it and sells for $50 less than the 1600 in the stores. They sell for about the same in Ebay.
However, Sony just announced that they will start selling next month a new player that will stream Netflix once they have a firmware upgrade ready later this fall. ($250) No reviews yet on that model as it has just barely been announced. It will probably be similar to their 360 model or perhaps a bit better.

Are there any blu-ray players that can stream netflix and get on the internet?

Answer
This sort of depends on what you plan to use your computer for.

If you want to play games on your laptop, use any sort of complicated program like Avid Media Composer, then do not buy an apple product. Also, if you like to be in control of the details on the computer, like how it runs, and any other sort of specifics, go for the PC. Any kind of PC is better for someone who knows about computers and likes for it to meet specific needs or wishes. They are usually more flexible with your choices, though they aren't as pretty as Macs.

I own a Macbook Pro currently, and I think its nice. It runs smoothly and it functions well. Sometimes it gets a little irritating because I don't like the filing system, but I have gotten used to it. Macs are good for people who don't need to control their computer a lot, and they just want it to do a few things like have itunes, hold a calendar, write research papers. It can do more complicated things (I have Civilization IV downloaded on it as well as the Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro). I can have one or two of those open at a time before it starts being difficult. Macs also have a tendency to run extremely smoothly, and then on occasion there is a problem and it immediately crashes or something where you have to take it in. But you can take it to the Genius Bar if you have an Apple store in the area to get it taken care of. It can also be a little bit more difficult to fix problems by yourself.

The myths that Macs don't crash is a lie, but it is true that they don't very often, and they do run well, especially because there haven't been many viruses going through their systems yet.

Is this a good laptop?

i wanna get this movie on blu-ray. is the picture quality good. when i say good i mean far out better than any other blu-rays. is the picture quality great? is it worth it???!!!

Answer
I can only tell you what I know, and I will back up what I say, I can not speak for others. Even though I don't like it some other people might like it.
There was this bluray demostration at the shopping center once. They put 2 identical televisions right next to each other and played the same movie on it but one was a bluray disc on a blu ray player, the other was the normal dvd on a normal dvd player. They said "Notice how clear and sharp the images are ont he blu ray". I did not notice until they pointed it out, and even then, it seemed more to be a 'placebo effect'. Like if someone repeatedly told you this cake doesn't taste as good as that one, and so when you do taste them you might go oh you're right, when in fact there's no difference. Its not like the non bluray was totally pixelated. The edges of things like people's faces was still 'blurred and smeared' on both tvs because it was a plasma large screen tv (you know how plasma large screen tvs tend to stretch the images out and the edges of pictures 'blend' in with the other stuff?).
I did not find the blu ray any better than the normal dvd players, nor did I find any difference between bluray and non blu ray discs, and I am not the least tempted to buy a bluray disc over a normal DVD disc.
We have a bluray player and disc now, it came for free with the new tv. It doesn't do the job anybetter than our old player. If anything, its more simple and boring. The old DVD player came with 2 free preinstalled games, and had many functions (change volume, subtitles button, karaoke, zoom in or out of view, tonal changes and USB port etc and it wasn't even a popular brand). It played music cds too, but the one thing it couldn't do was play really badly pirated cds and dvds. The bluray player can't play them either. We tried them with the pirated dvds our friends gave us. (thank goodness, the dvds didn't look nice at all). Like they say, they don't make houses like they used to. Well I reckon they don't make anything like they used to- before things were built to last, and to work. Like with name brands, the 'brand' and status quo is nothing, its the object itself that matters. There are good quality things that don't have that price tag because they don't have a 'word' associated with them, but they do the same job. As far as I can see, there is no difference between bluray discs or dvds, unless you think its worth paying around $15 more for extra features and deleted scenes, which usually come with dvds anyway.
Even though I haven't seen the Dark Knight, I reckon its not worth it because it wouldn't be that different (if its different at all), unless there are really cool extra features. Remember that the tv will be displaying the image. The picture quality won't be any better if you used a top quality disc in a top quality player if your tv is a black and white tv. Tvs display pictures use pixels, and each tv has their own tv pixel size.
So basically the quality also depend on the tv. See if you can go to an electronics store or a department store and see their blu ray/dvds movies demos on their tvs.

PS3 blu ray has black boxes at the top and bottom?

Jordan S

ok I may be an idiot, but i thought with 16:9 tvs "widescreen" movies would be full screen, and not have black bars at the top and bottom like 4:3 tvs do, am I missing some setting some where on the playstation?

Answer
While you may have a 16:9 TV, not all movies are shot in 16:9.

Some are shot with a slightly wider aspect ratio (1.85:1 or 2.39:1) and as a result, the blu-ray player is keeping the horizontal resolution the same. This then results in the black bars on the top and bottom.

You can try using the remote's Zoom feature, to slightly zoom in one the screen but you will lose the extreme left and right edges of the original picture.

Is there any way to convert HDMI to RCA?

blu ray player rca output image

Daniel

I bought a new blu-ray player which uses HDMI output. My old TV only inputs 3 RCA. Is there some type of converter which can connect the two? I've heard that digital converter boxes don't work very well and are very expensive. However, if there are options, I want to hear them. Thanks.

Answer
The problem is that HDMI is digital and the "3 RCA" input is analog. The two are incompatible. However, it can be done if you're willing to spend the money. What you need is an electronic device that detects and demodulates the HD signal at the HDMI input and reformats it to analog video and stereo audio. Such devices exist, as in the link below.

But frankly, I'd much rather devote the cost toward a real HDTV. That's the only way you're going to be able to see Blu-ray in the manner that it is intended.

Can you hook a blu ray player to an analog tv?

Jessie H

I have an older 36" tv, about 10-15 years old that is in excellent condition. I want to get a blu ray player so i can stream netflix through my tv and also hook up a flash drive and watch my home movies on it. is this possible. It has the RCA components on it,as will the blu ray player.
Note: I am not concerned with the quality of the picture, I know this is not an hdtv and expect dvd quality. But right now i am used to watching dvds on a computer and netflix on a computer.
It is either getting the blu ray player, or a vga converter box from china that will allow me to watch netflix streaming from my computer to the tv.

Answer
If you can find a Blu-Ray player that has the red/white/yellow audio/video output plugs on it, then yes, it will work for what you want to do. I'm not sure how many Blu-Ray players are like that though.

By the way, a Roku box would also do what you want - they start at $50, all of them stream netflix and are compatible with the red/white/yellow connectors, but only the fanciest one - Roku XS for $99 - also will show photos from USB (I have a cheap one, but I put the Flickr channel on it, so it'll browse my Flickr photos from the web).

I have an Amazon Prime account and I was wondering what are the steps to play the free movies on my PS3? Please let me know, thanks (:

Answer
Amazon Instant Video is not available on the PS3.

In order to watch Amazon Instant Video, you will need a TV that has the built in app (currently Panasonic, Samsung, and Vizio TVs are the only TVs with built in Amazon), a set-top box or DVR that has the built in app (such as a Roku player, Tivo, or Sony Internet Video Link), or a Blu-ray player that has the built in app (currently only Sony and Panasonic stand alone Blu-ray players).

The PS3 does not currently have an Amazon app, so the PS3 can not use Amazon. In the future, if the Amazon app is added to the PS3, you will then be able to use the PS3, the same way it uses Hulu, Vudu, and Netflix (there will be an app for it under the Video section).

Since Amazon has just started this, I would expect to see an Amazon app in the future, but probably not for at least a couple more months (it may not even happen until next year).

Can I get Amazon Prime VOD on my Samsung BluRay?

TIM S

I've done some research but I can only find threads that are over a year old. I just got a Samsung 3D BluRay and it does Netflix great but I prefer Amazon. Are they still "working on it" like I read from a couple years ago? My TV entertainment setup would be great if there is some way to get it without having to run wires from my laptop to the TV. I'm hoping soon? Thanks.

Answer
Smart devices like Smart TVs or Blu-Ray players only support the apps that come with it. I don't know if it's possible to add apps later on. You can try asking Samsung's tech support and see what they say but my guess is they won't give a complete answer.

Blu-ray player: Sharp BD-HP20

I wanted to watch a movie on it that released recently and it wouldn't play. It mentioned something about firmware updates online.

I am just curious how on earth I'm supposed to update my Blu-ray player if I download updates via the Internet?

Do I need to connect my BR-player to the Internet and my PC??? How is that done?

Thanks!
Or, do I need to burn the upload on a CD?

I can't even get the latest firmware to download properly... It's in .RVP

Answer
The easy way is to have it connected to the internet and turned on and go in the menu to update the firmware.
The other way is like your doing or you can use a usb flash drive and download it.

I'm sure that Sharp has someone that can tell you what ext. you need on the download

Should I buy a computer to play movies and streamline videos online instead of a blu ray player?

I'm thinking about buying another computer to hook up to my tv instead of a blu ray player. I would like to download and stream movies and tv shows. But I don't know if the quality would be very good. What do you think?

Answer
If you own a 360 that is a great alternative as you could stream everything on your pc to 360 via windows media player. No need to connect pc to tv, you just stream everything wireless.

My blu ray player no longer plays blu rays. It only plays DVD's. Two people suggested I update the firmware, but how on earth do you do that? I am clueless. I never had to do anything like that when I had a DVD player, so this is new to me.

It is a Samsung blu ray player, if that makes a difference.

Answer
Go to the Samsung website & do a search for the model of your unit. Check your unit to make sure it has an SD card slot or USB port. If it does, then do the next step....

At the Samsung website, look for firmware updates for your model and download it to your computer.
(I usually download it to my desktop so that I can find it easier when I transfer the file)

When the download is complete, insert an SD card or a flash drive into your computer and transfer the file. NOTE - the flash drive or SD card must be blank before you transfer the file.

When the transfer is complete, plug it into your blu-ray player, then turn it on. The update should take happen automatically. When it's done, you can shut off the blu ray player, remove the SD card or flash drive, then restart your player.

The Samsung website probably has these instructions too. (www.samsung.com)

Hope this helps.

How to connect my Sony Blu-Ray player to the internet?

I want to hook my Sony Blu-Ray player up to the internet so I can watch Netflix on my TV. I have looked up how to do that, but all of the videos and websites say to choose the option of a built-in wireless connection. When I go into the Network Settings and click on Internet Settings, the only connection option that comes up in wired. How can I fix this and set up a wireless connection?

Answer
If your Blu-Ray player doesn't have onboard wireless capability, you must go with the wired. Netflix won't mind.

i know there are cheap ones online but i have a 1080p 52 inch sony hd tv and i recently bought a ps3 as a blu ray player.. my question is what kind of hdmi cable should i get? They have different ratings like 1.3a and 1.3b i don't really understand the difference.. i'm looking for the best possible picture quality and looking for one that supports 120hz. Thank you.

Answer
None of them support 120hz. (this is a scam to try and get you to buy an expensive cable). All TV's pull the signal at the same speed, but 120 hz LCD televisions draw the screen twice as often.

Want a good HDMI cable? My Belden cable (normally sold to TV studios and production houses) ran me about $38. www.bluejeanscables.com

That was my 12 ft cable. I also bought some 1 and 2 ft cables to feed my HDMI switch from MonoPrice.

What am I missing in order to complete my upgrading?

Answer
Yes, you will need 2 HDMI cables, assuming your TV has 2 or more HDMI inputs. You'll at least need one for the BlueRay, the game console could get away with composite cable connections.

You'll also need somewhere to connect the other end of that 30' Ethernet cable. If you have a router, hub, switch or CAT5 jack in the room you'll be OK, otherwise you'll need to decide how to connect the Xbox.

What is a Blu-ray player? Is it what DVD's are turning into.

Are there movings being made for it, other than new releases?
Would it be worth getting my parents for Christmas?
Sorry, I said "movings" and I meant to say "Movies".

Answer
Blue Ray is one of two incompatible high definition DVD formats avaialble for viewing movies. The other format is HD-DVD. And neither of these is compatible with DVD Video the original format. However most Blue Ray or HD-DVD players or the new LG Dual format player also play DVD video discs. The opposite is not true. In other words you cannot play a HD-DVD or a Blue Ray DVD in a old DVD video player. And only the LG combination unit can play all three formats.

Some movies are released on Blue Ray and some are released on HD-DVD (and maybe a few might be released on both but it seems most theatrical houses have to favor one or the other). For the short term it is most likely releases will continue on DVD video since this is what most of the public has and therefore where the most sales will be. But it is anyone's guess as to how long this will continue since it depends on how the public adopts the technology or if internet based downloads exceed high definition disc sales.

Is it worth it? That is a good question and depends on a few things. How much you want to spend is part of it. HD-DVD and Blue Ray players that play only that one of the two formats plus DVD video go for about $399 without special sales on Circuit City or Best Buy sites or in their stores. The LG Player which plays all three (Blue Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD video) goes for about $1000. So it would be cheaper to buy two players for about $798.

And there is the other consideration. Only a HD Ready TV or monitor can display the high resolution from these players. So if they do not have a HD Ready TV or monitor it would cost you more to buy one of those. And that could be about $3000 and up depending on how big the screen size is of the set and what brand you buy.

6-cell Lithium Ion Battery

Unless you custom ordered it i doubt it came with a blu-ray player. You can pick one up online, in the laptop form factor for about 189.99 to 239.99$ depending on where you shop

External full sized burners, USB interface run about 169.99-200.00$

Your intergrated video card "Intel Graphics Media Accellerator X3100" May also not be fast enough for blu ray playback, Could end up with Chops, lag and tessellation errors since its the bottom o' the bin VGA card.

But it is a dell afterall :P

What does the V chip do to blocked programs?

blu ray player game console image

Mister R

What does the V-Chip do when activated and/or what happens when a blocked program is on. Also does it affect other consumer electronic products like game consoles or VHS, DVD, Blu-ray players?

Answer
The V-chip works much like closed captioning to send and receive a special code in the programming which indicates the show's score according to a simple numerical rating system for violence, sex, and language. The programs signals are encoded according to their rating using the XDS protocol; this is detected by the television sets' V-chip. If the program's rating is outside the level configured as acceptable on that particular television, the program is blocked.

The V-chip has a 4 digit numerical password in order to keep older children from changing its settings. However, it can be overridden by anyone who read the television's manual to find out how to reset the password to 0000 (built into the V-chip in case the parents themselves forget the password that they set).

For a blu-ray player (like ps3) do you NEED and HDTV, or will my really old tv from the 80s work?

Alexis Ric

I don't care about quality, honestly I don't even notice it. For that matter, are there any devices that require an HDTV (by device I mean game consoles and blu-ray players and such)?

Answer
I am not aware of any video device currently sold that only has HD output. You can use the standard A/V cable supplied with the PS3 to output composite video to any old TV that has the standard trio of yellow/white/red inputs for the video, left audio channel and right audio channel, respectively. If it's an ultra-cheap TV, sometimes they only had the coaxial input for cable or an antenna, but if your TV has the yellow, white and red RCA jacks the PS3 can feed it. Even my Panasonic Blu-Ray play that connects to the Internet and plays HD videos from Youtube has the old composite and S-video outputs. You absolutely can use the PS3 on most ancient TVs if you don't mind it looking a bit fuzzy...

What is a decent Blu Ray Player to buy?

blu ray player with wifi image

The Nights

Im looking for my first blu ray player. I would like wifi, but no 3d. Something that has decent loading speed. And I'd Like to keep it fairly cheap without sacrificing quality. Any suggestions?

Answer
Believe it or not the Sony PS 3 is still the buy in blu-ray players. It takes some time to properly setup all the audio video setting in the menu (which makes a big difference in the picture quality) but its a good player. You can set it up for auto-play just insert and starts playing. The only other thing is it uses a bluetooth remote which must be purchased separately.

I lost my Sony Blu Ray player remote. The model is the S360, and I can't seem to find the remote anywhere. Not in stores and not online. I was wondering if maybe the PS3 Blu Ray remote would work for it, seeing as how they are both Sony, but on the back of the packaging it says "For PS3 only."

It won't let me play half of my movies because they can't be controlled from the player itself, it has to be done by remote control. D: Heellpp.

Answer
Yeah the PS3 remote wont work, it uses bluetooth. Maybe try a universal remote, try google-ing a remote compatable with your model of player.

Can I use a DVD remote from one DVD player on anuther DVD player?

Jon Howell

I want to use a lg Blu-ray DVD remote on my panasonic Blu-ray DVD player. The lg remote model is AKB73215301. The panasonic Blu-ray player model number is DMP-BD60. I lost my panasonic remote so I want to attempt to program the lg remote to control the panasonic Blu-ray player.
Thanks for any and all information.

Answer
Generally, no. If the LG remote is also a universal remote, you may be able to do it, but this is typically not part of component remotes. If you have a remote for your TV or cable box, you might be able to use that for the panasonic as well, or you can buy a cheap universal remote.

Can you connect an mp4 player to your TV to watch it? If so with what? Thanks! (It's not an Apple Ipod it's just some weird brand from Japan or something and the only places you can like put stuff in are the headphone hole thing and the USB thing.)

I guess the only way then in that case is to connect it up to an external box such as a dvd or blu-ray player/recorder which has a USB input on it.

Don't know about yours, consult your manual. On mine, the USB port is used for BD live memory and to play mp4 video, to accept a wifi connection and to display jpeg's from thumb drives.

Can you watch movies on different platforms at the same time using Netflix with the same account?

kwiecien94

I have a Wii, an ipad and a macbook pro, and I was wondering if this is possible to do? My ipad is wifi & 3G and I may want to watch something on it away from my wifi, but my wife or kids might want to watch something on the Wii or computer at home. Can this be done on one account?

Answer
In my house, we routinely watch different netflix movies on different platforms at the same time, specifically the Blu-Ray player and our PC. We also find that, given a knowledge of our password, a relative of ours is able to access our netflix account from his laptop at an entirely different location while we are using it at our home at the same time.

Kawazaki

The thing is I bought a Blu-ray drive for my laptop but I can't play BD discs in WMP so I'm looking for a third party freeware to play BD discs.

10 points for best answer.

Answer
If you bought a Blu-Ray drive it should have come with a CD/DVD disk that will install the necessary codecs to play Blu-Ray on the computer including WMP.

You may need to use the player that came on the disk rather than WMP if it did not contain the correct codec. The codec must match the make and model of the Blu-Ray drive and the operating system of the computer.

I would start at the website of the maker of your Blu-Ray drive.

Which is the best software to decode and shrink?

Answer
How to Copy Encrypted or Copy-Protected DVD

Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc (DVD) is quite commonly used nowadays due to its huge storage advantage. However, most commercially produced DVDs are always protected with the Content Scramble System (CSS), a digital rights management scheme that is widely used. Manufacturers or producers use CSS keys set which is a collective term for authentication key, player key, title key, disc key, second disk key set, and/or encrypted key to protect the discâs content from being duplicated by unauthorized parties. What can you do if you want to copy or make duplications of a protected DVD?

Technically, you can seek help from some freeware and shareware available that can help to solve your problem to copy a protected DVD.

DVD43

You can try out DVD43. DVD43 is a free decrypter or CSS encryption breaking program that can help you to duplicate copy-protected DVDs. i have used it to copy DVD movies and it works well. The installation program is pretty simple: just run the setup file and leave the shortcut icon on your task bar. This program will run in the background and decrypt movies on the fly. When you want to use it, you just insert the DVD which you want to copy and wait for DVD43 to detect it. After that you can start duplicating the DVD with your DVD copy software.

Pavtube DVD Copy

It is an easy to use and powerful DVD copy tool. The program makes it possible to copy DVD to DVD with excellent DVD copying quality.
it is very easy for beginner!! see the main interface.

With Pavtube DVD Copy, you own the most efficient way to create backup copies of your DVD movie collection. These working copies allow you to play your DVDs on home and computer DVD players every day without the inevitable risk of getting your originals scratched or damaged. You get disc protection with no loss of playback quality.

The program contains functions of DVD burner. So it can not only copy DVD movie to ISO file or DVD folder and backup DVD to hard disk drive, but also burn ISO file and DVD folder to DVDs.

DVD Shrink

DVD Shrink is a useful program to back up DVD discs. This freeware can also be used in conjunction with a DVD burning software such as Nero to make copies of the DVD video disc. This software supports Windows 9x/2000/XP. DVD Shrink operates in quite a similar way to DVD43 and other decrypter programs.

DVD Decrypter
This is another software that can be used to decrypt copy-protected DVD. Besides, DVD Decrypter can also record images to disc. The software is free and the new release DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0 is free for downloading.
Click here to download:http://www.vgmcentral.com/dvddecrypter/index.htm

DVDFab HD

DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab Platinum. It copies entire DVD movie to hard disk, and removes all the protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying. It also comes with full HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support (Removes AACS).

SmartRipper

SmartRipper is a DVD VOB file extractor (so called "DVD ripper"). The program is loaded with nice features like per-chapter splitting of VOB files, angle processing, etc. It also displays statistics such as length, size, and max/min/average bitrate for every chapter and active selection.

The only Problems someone might have with it is Ripping a DVD with one of the Newer Bad Sector Copy protections because this Program only supports Breaking CSS Encryption but becides that it is Great and it is the Only ripper I have used were I can Rip a DVD as a Single M2V Video file and an AC3 audio file or as Just a single Vob file with Just the streams in it you want.....

Should I get a Xbox or PS3?

blu ray player load time comparison image

Kylie.

I wanted to get a Xbox 360 or PS3, but I didnt know which one to get. Which one is better? Which one should I get?

Answer
Its all on preference and on what kinds of hardware you already have.
If you want a Blu Ray player, but don't want to buy one as well as a game console, you'll best go with PS3. If you already have a Blu Ray player or you don't want one, and you simply want a game console for 'gaming', Xbox will be a better choice.

Yes Xbox charges a subscription for its online services, buts its very affordable and for the kinds of stability, reliability and general quality of the online experience attained. If the online side of the argument is strong, then Xbox will be almost a no brainier. Also, if your big on getting online games and expansions early, Xbox is also a better choice. The PS3's servers are really disappointing in comparison with the Xbox's servers and online support.

If your a graphics whore, then your probably more lenient towards PS3, but you probably didn't know that the majority of games are only slightly better than the Xbox, and some games are actually worse. Again, PS3 is Blu ray and can show better graphics and hold more memory on the one CD, but you rarely ever come across a situation where the PS3 totally overshadows the Xbox with this part of its performance.

The original 'white' Xbox 360 was a little unreliable, especially compared to the PS3. With the new Xbox 'short' / Slim. The whole unreliability and Red Ring Of Death is gone. They are a huge deal more stable and there is actually no such thing as a red ring anymore. Even some of the later white 360's were a load more reliably than the earlier models.

If your going in for which console has more grunt and power, you'll be surprised to find that the Xbox actually has a slight advantage. Even more so with the release of the slim. ( The PS3 slim is really bad. if your going to go for a PS3 please buy a fat one, they will work much better and are a great deal more reliable.)

Games... PS3 and Xbox have a bit fight over which exclusives are better, and in total of games and expansions etc. the Xbox has a advantage as they have deals with almost every second company to get exclusive downloadable content and expansions. But with actual retail games, its fully preference. Don't just settle on Halo V.S Little Big Planet, look at ALL of the exclusives. Also, keep in mind most of the exclusives are now on both platforms, and future exclusives are actually being made for both platforms. This part of the 'war' is really starting to fizzle away. ( Xbox has a much wider range of exclusives through their arcade section.)

A few things that PS3 has over Xbox is it has more freedom over what it can do with a computer and other pieces of hardware. Like being able browse the internet ( A largely used argument, somewhat useless) and it can hold a much larger amount of storage. Though the gap is slowly being closed as Xbox brings out its larger hard drives.

A little overview:

Graphics - PS3 has a slight advantage over Xbox, though its not often seen.
Games - Its purely preference. If you want PS3 exclusives or Xbox. go with the respective console.
Power - Xbox has a slight advantage.
Online - Xbox has a huge advantage.
General Entertainment ( Movies + music ) - If your looking for a general entertainment device more than a gaming console, PS3 might have a bit of an advantage. But if you really want more of a gaming console with a slight bit of 'entertainment', Xbox has more of an advantage.

(People take the maturity of the player base in account too. Xbox has more 'kids' on it because it was cheaper at the time thus more parents bought it for their kids. But the player base on the Xbox has more mature players in actual number than the PS3, it just doesn't have the smaller fraction of child players. If that makes sense. The PS3 has a much smaller % of its players being kids, but the Xbox has many, many more players.)

P.S A big part of this argument is preference, you need to decide what you want and why. then go off that.

The final xbox vs ps3 comparison?

I will give my , in depth , opinion about the console wars, and I want to hear what you have to say about it as well.

First off the ps3
Has better graphics
Ps3 has better exclusives since xbox is shipping some of them off to the ps3
Has blu ray player
Same price as 360
Lower fail rate
Shorter warranty
Laggy online
Free online
Dosent break your games
Scratch resistant disks
And a subscription that gives younloads of free stuff

Xbox 360
More cartoonish graphics
Same price as ps3
High fail rate
Longer warranty
Larger community
Expesive to play online
Better features then the ps3
Faster
And xbox is loaded with fanboys so watch out ps3 fans

So I would choose the ps3 only because I can't afford to buy 2 copies of black ops and a new console for every time i get the rrod and I also can't afford 60 bucks a yearfor online

Answer
PS3 Slim Pros:
- More affordable $299 price;
- slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation;
- all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface;
- doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player;
- built-in Wi-Fi;
- HDMI output with 1080p support;
- built-in Web browser; free online gaming service.

Ps3 Slim Cons:
- Lacks backward support for PS2 games;
- no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes aren't compatible;
- online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren't as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they're getting better.

Xbox 360 S Pros
- Nearly silent when compared with the original 360.
- Smaller with a slimmer look.
- Built in wireless N and its fast.
- Integrated optical audio.
- 5 usb ports.
- Internal, but easily accessible 250gb HDD on the bottom of the console.
- Uses half the power of the original.
- Works with most of the old accessories, including the transfer cable.

Xbox 360 S cons
- The IR receiver is located lower on the console and appears to have a narrower field. So depending on setup using a remote maybe a headache.
- Only comes with standard def av cables.
- Does not use the old memory cards or hard drives.
- Touch sensitive buttons that when touch emit a soft tone.
- Kinect ready socket in the back.
