Im thinking of buying a blu-ray for my parents for christmas. They have a Mitsubishi WD-57731 DLP TV and the blu-ray player I'm looking at has 24p output. Does the TV do the 3:2 pulldown? If it does will it still look ok, or will it be jumpy? Will it even be able to play it?

Thanks for any help

Answer
If the TV can't do the pull-down (doubtful), it can ask the player to output at 60 Hz. So, nothing to worry.

Good graphics card for gaming?

Lauren

I recently got a home build pc, second hand. My game (Skyrim) was very jumpy on a medium setting. Its running better on low settings, but I heard some cards help it to process faster. Someone told me to consider getting a 2gb graphics card. Someone mentioned a PSU also? I'm not very pc saavy so I'm lost here. Advice is so appreciated! Thank you ahead of time. I really know nothing about this computer or what any of the following means so feel free to explain my computer's perks or disadvantages to me too, lol, a lady is LOST here ,- Intel Core i3-2120 Dual Core 3.30GHz Processor
- 8GB DDR3 RAM
- 2.0TB SATA3 Hard Drive
- Blu Ray Player/DVD-+RW/CD-RW
- Haupauge TV Tuner with remote
- Black Shuttle xPC case and motherboard combo It has USB 3.0, HDMI, optical audio, eSATA

Answer
your pc itself is a good household pc but unforunately you may struggle to put in a decent graphics card, your case is too small to fit any (what you class as gaming cards) in
you will need a low profile card, pretty sure the shuttle cases have different psu`s aswell, a psu is the power supply unit,
to run a low end gaming card like a GT640 you will need a 400-500w psu, its likely the one you have will be a 230w,
it will say on the side when you open it,
really you need to look at a card like a 7750 low profile version, providing your power supply can handle it. its the best low profile card you can buy and yes it will improve all your games dramatically going from no graphics card to a HD7750 low profile

blu ray player making buzzing noise image

lostboy87

I have a 6month old LG 1080p lcd tv and when ever i watch a blu ray there is a humming/buzzing noise coming from the back of the tv.The noise is a low rising to a higher buzzing noise. This only happens when i watch a blu ray,i have a playstation 3 and a sony blu ray player and its thesame with both.I use a HDMI cable and have tried several different ones but makes no difference. So this problem only only seems to occur when using HDMI,normal tv and scarts on other things are fine. Also i havnt heard the noise while playing games on the playstation which is strange.
Please could you help me,thanks!
To tonyr...the tv is on a stand with the playstation under it on the shelf.I watch through my playstation but used a standalone blu ray player and had the same problem. Now i have a ps3 the blu ray player is in my bedroom.

Answer
Buzzing is usually something to do with electricity or humming. also lines panning up and down on the tv. Lg also has had some problems with their HD LCDs. I personally have replaced probably twenty different lg lcds due to electric problems. How far is your hdmi running? is it in the wall? How far away is the equipment from the tv? Are you watching blu ray off your ps3, or is it on another player? Make sure no power cables or romex in the wall are running along with A/V cables.

My PS3 slim WON'T play any of my PS3 games but plays DVD's!! PLEASE HELP A.S.A.P!!!?

Q. My PS3 SLIM is 120 GB (gigabytes) I bought it in LATE 2009.

It plays dvd's fine but it doesn't / will not play any of my ps3 games. Whenever I put in a PS3 game, it tries to read it, and suddenly makes a buzzing noise, then rejects the game out on it's own without even showing an error message.

I don't want to reformat it. I already tried pressing and holding the eject button for 12-15 seconds, and that didn't work either. I also did a system update to try and fix it, and that also didn't work.

The games were working fine until today; they worked yesterday as well, and it randomly started to not work today.

Please give information on how to fix it!!!!
If someone can't tell me how to fix it, then please explain to me why it's doing this in the first place, if you can.

Answer
There is about 95% chance your Blu-Ray laser is bad, there are a couple things you could try before calling Sony or trying to repair yourself.

Make sure to have a backup and try some of the recovery options, can sometimes fix software problems.

You can also try a lens cleaner kit, make sure it is made for blu-ray players though.

Where can I buy a region free 3D blu ray Player?

Answer
If you mean "Region free" to play DVDs (as opposed to any zone A; B or C Blu-rays) then in the UK Richer Sounds sell the 3D capable Sony BDPS480 for £99. Doing multi-region for DVD is pretty easy.

By comparison, buying a machine that will play Zone A; B or C Blu-rays is a far more expensive thing to do. You'll be looking at a minimum spend of around £250. This will get you 3D, multi-zone Blu-ray and multi-region DVD though. That will get you the LG BP620 with a hardware chip installed to allow multi-zone Blu-ray. At the moment it's only a couple of LG models, then Pioneer and then Oppo players that can be made Blu-ray multi-zone.

Hope this helps

is there a portable blu ray player that it compatible with multiple regions and zones and plays dvds?

Q. I have a mix of dvds from the US and UK. I cannot play them both on my mac because I can only change the region four times. Also, I have blu rays from the US which I would like to be able to play of the dvd player as most of my favorite movies are in this format. I tried looking on amazon (.com and .co.uk) and was not all too sucessful.

Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray player with an optical output, and also supports apps such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, HBO go ? Not worried about price, just want some suggestions on whats good.

Thanks!

Answer
Well - I am a bigger fan of the small media servers like the WD TV Live box or Roku rather than a BluRay player. The apps are usually better and you usually get more of them.

Check that the BD player has wireless built in. The dongle to make my Panasonic player wireless was $90 and gave me 8 apps. The WD TV Live box cost $99 and had 24.

Almost everything runs Netflix. I found a list of devices that support Amazon On Demand. I am not sure of HBO go.

How do you connect Amazon Prime Movies to the PS3?

we p

I have an Amazon Prime account and I was wondering what are the steps to play the free movies on my PS3? Please let me know, thanks (:

Answer
Amazon Instant Video is not available on the PS3.

In order to watch Amazon Instant Video, you will need a TV that has the built in app (currently Panasonic, Samsung, and Vizio TVs are the only TVs with built in Amazon), a set-top box or DVR that has the built in app (such as a Roku player, Tivo, or Sony Internet Video Link), or a Blu-ray player that has the built in app (currently only Sony and Panasonic stand alone Blu-ray players).

The PS3 does not currently have an Amazon app, so the PS3 can not use Amazon. In the future, if the Amazon app is added to the PS3, you will then be able to use the PS3, the same way it uses Hulu, Vudu, and Netflix (there will be an app for it under the Video section).

Since Amazon has just started this, I would expect to see an Amazon app in the future, but probably not for at least a couple more months (it may not even happen until next year).

What are the pros and cons of the PS3?

Mmmm.... C

I had an Xbox 360 till the red lights of death took over. I am not going to invest in another Microsoft system because of the disappointment. I don't really like the Wii so I'm probably going to get a PS3.

I read mixed reviews about this system. Mostly criticized for the dim game selection, and that the system does not use its full potential. Is this a system that you think will excel and eventually take over the gaming industry or is it the biggest flop of all time?
(also does it play DVDs or just Blu-Rays)

Answer
Pros:
-Typically comes with larger HDDs, which even then are simple and easy to upgrade, not to mention doing so doesn't void warranty (if for some reason you need ridiculous amounts of space. Some people do, but I understand it doesn't appeal to the masses)
-Free Online Play (Despite being free, it's quite stable)
-Blu-Ray Player (plays DVDs and most .avi files as well)
-Wi-Fi adapter built-in
-Rechargeable Controllers out of box
-Decent library after a two-year buildup
-Hideo Kojima's current exclusivity (MGS, ZotE, etc)
-PSN has a very nice collection over the years, with Pixeljunk [developers] being among my favorite. Arcade doesn't at all have a worse collection, but the PSN is decent nowadays to where it's still worth mentioning that you have something to substitute Arcade with.

Cons:
-Online play options aren't as robust as Live, including....
-No cross-game chatting, yet. You get the option to send texts via virtual keyboard, but it's difficult to find people willing to use it.
-*Slightly* smaller gaming library
-Because there's no unified online gaming network, the difficulty in joining a friend's online game varies from title to title.
-Wish it had Castle Crashers (though at least I have Pixeljunk :))

Neutral Zone:
-Six-Axis functionality (while rarely ever used *well*, at least it's not a con as it's rarely required)
-It has Home, which presents a unique, new console experience to interact with fellow players. It gives you a way to find other like-minded gamers. This is a neutral zone, however, because the novelty of Home BETA faded very quickly. Granted, it's beta, but they may have missed with this one. It is, however, not a CON simply because it's an optional feature, so it's not like it hurts.

And there you have it. Honestly, I think the first deciding factor ALWAYS comes down to what games you want from your exclusives. I got the Wii because I wanted Twilight Princess, and the PS3 because I was addicted to Warhawk. However, if you find yourself as more of a Gears of War or Halo guy, maybe you should get another 360. Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, or Warhawk more of your thing? Get a PS3
If you like any other shooter: guess what, they're almost always multiplatform. Do you love sports games? They're also multiplatform (I WILL admit that they are slightly better on the 360, but the difference itself is not a console decider).

Second factor is gaming partners. It's much more entertaining to game with people you know, regardless of how the console performs.

For me it simply came down to the fact that I was unwilling to pay for online play, though I do have a great deal of respect for how good Live is.

As far as criticisms you've reported:
-Dim game selection was a problem at the very beginning of the Playstation 3's life-cycle. However, at the end of two years it's shaped up. Library isn't as wide as Microsoft's, but it has a quality lineup. In fact, looking at http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?&results=50&name=&console=&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Score&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort= :
I notice that we nearly have a 2:1 advantage of PS3 games over 360 games in the top 50 rated games (granted, only one source).

-Game developers don't use the console's true potential simply because most game developers shoot for multiplatforming their games. What does that mean? That developers don't take advantage of the processing power of the PS3 because they still want the games playable on the 360. It's not a bash on the 360, but rather explaining that it's simply the easy business decision. If people are to take advantage of the PS3's hardware power it won't be until the later half of this console generation.

-Is it going to take over the industry? Heck no, at least not in this forseeable future. Biggest flop? HARDLY! It's a beast of a machine. Its misguided, slow start did indeed hurt it indefinitely, but the console is still selling nonetheless. It's a powerful, versatile machine with potential yet to be discovered.

Should i sell the PS3 and buy an X-box 360 or keep the PS3?

Anonymous

My PS3 is broken as it now just freezes my game every time and i don't get a chance to play so now i'm going to sell it.If there is a way to stop it from freezing every time please tell me otherwise the majority of you that want me to sell it i'll sell it.

Answer
in my opinon, i would get a xbox 360. I personally just think the 360 is better and i have nothing against the PS3 honestly. But just a warning, the xbox 360 does get the Red Ring of Death which means your xbox is screwed and needs to be repaired. But that's only if you play like 8 hours a day, keep it cramped up in a small area, and let it collect dust. The xbox does charge for online, where the PS3 has free online plus a blu ray player. Both are great systems, but a video game system is only good for it's games. A lot of the games are the same, but not all of them, here i will compare the systems exclusive games

XBOX 360 exclusives.......

Halo 3
Halo wars
Gears of war
Gears of war 2
Splinter cell conviction
Banjo kazooie nut's & bolts
Fable 2
Mass efect

PS3 exclusives.........

Metal gear solid 4
God of war 3
Kill zone 2
Little big planet
Gran turismo 5
Uncharted
Resistence
Soul Calibur 5

those are just a few examples, of the ps3 and xbox 360 exclusives, either way, both are great systems, and it's up to you, but i would highly suggest the xbox 360. But have you ever thought of a wii?

I have been having massive issues with comcast net. Already had a tech come out replace all the wires modem and I bought a new router.

I have two new computers both running off of windows 8. comcast states we are getting full speed but having massive lag issues even with one computer on (hard wire plugged in no wireless).

When I did a troubleshooting it came up with the message in the title.
I have a medailink router and wondering how to fix this issue. We can't even stream videos now as it will lag up and stop. We have had the same service for close to ten years and used to be able to have two desktops going, ps3 going, and a blu ray player upstairs all running at the sametime with no lag and play a MMO like RIFT with no lag. Now it seems to crash out the speed no matter how many times I try to reboot.

If you could explain in steps how to fix this issue that would be great!

Answer
i have had a similar problem of sorts. you could try changing the DNS server

navigate to control panel >network and internet > network and sharing center.

on the left click change adapter settings > Right click Local area connection.

click Internet Protocol version 4 (tcp/IPv4) then click properties

Click Use the following DNS server if you're in the UK use 194.72.9.34 and 208.67.222.222
For the US use the Google servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Click ok. if its a DNS problem then that should fix it. if not. then i would suggest its your line card at the exchange if its ASDL

I am wanting to get the Sony Blu Ray DVD player that is on sale for $180 and I was wondering if people wait outside for the store to open on Thanksgiving Day like on Black Friday. If they do what time should I get there? Thanks in advance.

Answer
You better believe it! I like to go to the day after Thanksgiving sales too. A group of us ladies gets up at 4:30 a.m. and goes to another ladies house for coffee and rolls and we look thru the ads and schedule where we will go when depending on when different stores open and we have a large vehicle we fill up a couple of times and have to have one ladies husband come and unload it and take it home so we can keep shopping without having to return home. We spend about 16 or 17 hours on the road between our town and several towns close to us.

What is the difference between widescreen and anamorphic widescreen?

Comrade!

I'm planning on buying a bunch of anime soon, but I've suddenly become aware of the differences in aspect and display ratios, most notably where widescreen video will show more detail than the traditional standard definition/pan & scan detail I've grown up with. Now I want more bang for my buck.

The main display is an LG 32LD350-UB with a main 16:9 aspect ratio that can change to 4:3 (along with various other modes). My main player is going to be a PS3. Everywhere I read highly suggests anamorphic widescreen against regular widescreen. Plus, it seems I'm getting caught in the middle between getting Blu-Ray discs or DVD discs.

I get the point that anamorphic widescreen should work flawlessly on 16:9 TVs, but I still don't really understand how regular widescreens discs (*especially* those on Blu-Ray) may not work on the same TV set. I'd like to go without the black bars as much as I can, or at least minimize them as much as possible. Would I still get black bars on my display if I use BR discs?

What is the point of making WS shows/movies if they're not even going to display properly on a WS lcd television?

Answer
You have a 16:9 screen, I recommend you get the blu-ray version, it will work with the tv better and have higher quality.
- But if there is a 2:40:1/2:39:1 or 2:35:1 or 1:85:1 version you want to get that because you can choose the anamorphic (pan and scan) or non-anamorphic (letter-box) version.

Anamorphic widescreen > non-anamorphic widescreen.
- Anamorphic widescreen: is when the horizontal image squeezes and the vertical image stretches which means the image uses all lines of resolution, but you don't keep the original aspect ratio, but you at least you get full-screen while having a higher resolution.
- Non-anamorphic widescreen: is when the image will then be letter-boxed/pillar-boxed in which the vertical or horizontal resolution lines is wasted on black bars, but at least you get to watch the movie in the original aspect ratio on a smaller horizontal or vertical screen.

- Letter-boxing: it takes the original image and puts it onto a tv screen with a smaller horizontal screen, the original image does not get cropped/cut or squashed or stretched which means it keeps the original aspect ratio, but you get black bars on the top and bottom of your tv screen. = No full screen.
= Example: A 12:5 aspect ratio original cinema widescreen image is put onto either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio screen OR a 16:9 original widescreen image is put onto a 4:3 aspect ratio screen.

- Pillar-boxing: it takes it the original image and puts it onto a tv screen with a bigger horizontal screen, the original image does not get cropped/cut or squashed or stretched which means it keeps the original aspect ratio, but you get black bars on the left and right of your tv screen = No full screen.
= Example: A 4:3 aspect ratio original not widescreen image is put onto either a 16:9 or 12:5 aspect ratio widescreen screen OR a 16:9 aspect ratio original widescreen image is put onto a 12:5 aspect ratio screen.

Window-boxing (or gutter-boxing or match-boxing): is when the letter-box effect and pillar-box effect occur simultaneously which means you got black bars at the top, bottom, left, and right all around the image.
= Example: It can occur when a 12:5 image is set to 16:9 or 4:3 (letterbox), but then shown on a 12:5 tv screen OR It can occur when a 16:9 image is set to 4:3 (letterbox), but then shown on a 16:9 tv screen OR 4:3 image is set to 16:9 (letterbox), but then shown on a 4:3 tv screen.
= OR Example: It can occur when you don't resize resolutions to fill the entire screen (like if the tv does not upscale a 1280x720 to 1920x1080 to fill your tv screen).

- Pan and Scan: it takes the original widescreen image and then equally crops/cuts out the left and right portions from the original widescreen image so the horizontal portion of that image can fit onto a tv screen that has smaller horizontal screen then the original horizontal image.
= Example: A 12:5 aspect ratio original cinema widescreen image is horizontally cropped/cut to either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio OR 16:9 original widescreen image is horizontally cropped/cut to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
= Crops/cuts out the original widescreen image so it can play full screen on a tv without using black bars or squeezing the image or stretching the image. (You are capable of only cutting out the left or right then doing it equally on both sides so it fits on your screen). = Ruins the director or cinematographer's original vision and intentions of a video/image.

Tilt and Scan (or reverse pan and scan): it takes the original image and then equally crops/cuts out the top and bottom portions from the original image so the vertical portion of that image can fit onto a tv screen that has smaller vertical screen then the original vertical image.
= Example: A 4:3 aspect ratio original image is vertically cropped/cut to either a 16:9 or 12:5 aspect ratio.
= Crops/cuts out the original image so it can play full screen on a tv without using black bars or squeezing the image or stretching the image. (You are capable of only cutting out the left or right then doing it equally on both sides so it fits on your screen). = Ruins the director or cinematographer's original vision and intentions of a video/image.

Answer
Believe it or not the Sony PS 3 is still the buy in blu-ray players. It takes some time to properly setup all the audio video setting in the menu (which makes a big difference in the picture quality) but its a good player. You can set it up for auto-play just insert and starts playing. The only other thing is it uses a bluetooth remote which must be purchased separately.

Answer
NO...it is not a recorder and no you cannot copy over the disc's.

It is a "player"...it is the only true 1080p resolution display from a blu-ray disc. You need a 1080p HDTV to see the incredible displayed video to truly understand and appreciate it.

Q. I want my documentaries to be playable on the technologies inside home. The television, the videos and others but they can not play the clips directly from my phone .On the converting software what file format do i say that i want my video clips to look like?
I record my videos on a" for me POP " mobile phone.

Answer
Hi Amuoro, and welcome to Y!A Camcorders:

You've been asking about this same thing 5 times over the past month in various other Categories, but never have you said WHICH mobile phone model # you have. Different phones shoot video in different file formats (".3GP", ".3GP2", ".MP4", etc.).

And you need to tell us what kind of computer you have. Editing & transcoding (converting) video on a Mac is different than on a Windows PC.

One important point, in your Question headline you say you want your "phone videos to equal those of bigger camcorders". Most phones do not have the video quality to "equal" the quality of a bigger camcorder, but you can at least convert them to play normally on a television or YouTube / Netflix style media player.

If you want to show or distribute your videos using DVD, then the final video format will be MPEG-2 (or you can use MPEG-4 encoding for Blu-ray HD). But this encoding step is usually handled by the DVD authoring software (Roxio, Nero, iDVD, etc.). For just online distribution & viewing (YouTube, etc.), you have a wider choice of video formats for uploading.

Since you are relatively new to Yahoo!Answers, you might not know that you can Update your Question using the "Additional Details" link on the Action Bar below your Question text. Just mouse-over the blue "pencil icon" Edit menu, and add the details about your phone and computer.

This discussion will remain open for at least 4 days, for us to reply.

hope this helps,

InfraRecorder
is an open source utility that doesn't skimp on features or accessibility. Once installed, you'll notice you can either launch InfraRecorder or InfraExpress. The latter version features a slimmed down interface with wizards for burning data, audio, and video discs. It's sort of InfraRecorder for dummies. The full feature gives you a ton of options that might confuse folks used to using Nero Smart Start.
Here are a few of the things you can do with InfraRecorder:
* Create data, audio, video, and mixed-mode discs
* Record dual-layer DVDs
* Four methods for erasing discs
* Record disc images (ISO and BIN/CUE)
* Scan SCSI/IDE bus for devices and capabilities
* Create disc copies using temporary disc image
* Import session data from multi-session discs and add more sessions
It doesn't look like there's support for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but the product is still under development and new features are being added all the time.

Mix, edit and share videos online
There's no shortage of video-sharing sites nowadays. You can upload
or watch videos on sites like YouTube and Yahoo! Video.
However, most video sites offer little flexibility. To edit or mix
clips, you need your own software.
Jumpcut is a video-sharing site that gives you more control. In fact,
it lets you take over others' videos as well.
As with other sites, you can upload your own clips to Jumpcut. It
provides an online video editor, so you can cut and remix your clips.
You also can upload still photos and arrange a slide show. Jumpcut can
import pictures from Flickr, the popular photo-sharing site.

You can upload videos and photos through the site or via e-mail. In
e-mail, simply include your artwork as an attachment. Jumpcut will
automatically add it to your account.

Jumpcut allows you to remix other members' videos. You can reorder the
scenes or borrow footage for your own videos. The original version
stays intact, so you won't step on anyone's toes. You can restrict
your clips from others if you wish.

Jumpcut is still in beta (testing), so it may have a few kinks. It
recently became part of Yahoo!. That means you can join Jumpcut using
a Yahoo! ID.

what is a good brand for a blu ray player ?

blu ray player that plays netflix

blu ray player that plays netflix image

mw3051

i need a blu ray player that can of course play blu ray and dvd's, but also can stream stuff like hulu or netflix, and also will let me play movies from a computer on my local area network.

being able to check the weather would be nice too.

any helpful advice is appreciated.

thank you.

Answer
Be careful. The inclusion of streaming apps in televisions and blu ray players is a "add on". I have 8 streaming apps on my Panasonic BluRay player. I have 28 on my WD TV Live box and my WD box has a better interface, gets updated every few weeks, streams from my PC or USB flash and HDD drives.

For $99 it is a much better device and experience. (And yes - it does have a Weather app).

My advice would be you get a good, basic BluRay player, but get your streaming apps from a media server like a Roku unit or the WD TV Live box.

Why are my Netflix blu ray discs playing in widescreen?

Spencer

I have a 40 inch tv and a blu ray player. They both work great just netflix movies play in widescreen. Is there any way to fix this? The only movie that played in fullscreen blu ray was spiderman 2.

Answer
BluRay players will normally try to give you OAR - Original Aspect Ratio.

If you pop in a modern TV show on a BluRay disk - it should exactly fill your screen because HD TV shows were shot in exactly 16:9 ratio.

But movies - are shot in dozens of different ratios. This will produce black-bars on most HDTV's and the size of the bars will vary based on the movie.

Most televisions have a "Aspect" button that will zoom in and stretch the image to fill the screen.

The down side is if the camera pans you will get a "fish eye" effect as the center of the screen is not stretched as much as the edges - but it will fill the screen.

Check your TV remote or the TV setup menu. The better televisions will 'remember' that HDMI2 needs to be zoomed in.

Hope this helps.

So you'd like to... know why the xbox 360 rules all consoles?

Mr.S.Carot

Come on, Sony fanboys, lighten up and hear me out before you fumble for that "NO" button. I'm sorry that you spent $600+ to play the most powerful gaming system known to man only to find out that there were almost no games worth playing and the ones they do have are as good on the 360. PS3 is still a sweet Blu-ray player, no? So here's the guide:
The current gen console wars are history and the next-gen craze is front and center with sky-rocketing prices and awesome new games and features coming out of the woodwork. Sadly, if you're anything like me, you have but a modest budget and tight time constraints on your free time and only have the time and money for one next-gen console. The choices are: 1) Microsoft's awesome Xbox 360 Console Includes 20GB Hard Drive with it's unbeatable live play, slough of incredible original games, and a proven dependable interface, 2) The superpowered, blu-ray technology sporting, hyper-expensive PlayStation 3 (60GB); the gaming juggernaut with an endless supply of Japanese 3rd party support and perfect backwards-compatibility, and 3) the moderately priced Wii which looks to change the way games are played with it's revolutionary motion-sensitive controller, allowing you control you onscreen action using the motions of your hands, and featuring downloadable games dating from the NES all the way to the N64 era. Nice. So which to get? If the title of this guide didn't tell you, I'll tell you straight-up that I'm down with Microsoft on this one. I'm not some fanboy; I've floated between all three of these gaming giants in my years since my mama bought me the Atari 2600 and I believe they all offer something fantastic. Nintendo has and always will excel at family-friendly gaming and simple, pick-up-and-play party games at a good price and is highly recommended as a console for children or nostalgia buffs. But I'm neither of those. The best Nintendo series, which have great games including Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl that are top-notch and fun for all. But they don't carry the whole system for me (though Red Steel also looks promising). Sony's Playstation systems have been the king of the hill as far as sales go, and continue to dominate Japan and America alike with their always impressive list of RPG's and other quirky Japanese funfests. A great choice if you have limitless time and money to buy and play the neverending catalogue of cookie-cutter games mixed in with the handful of premium PS2 franchises such as Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts II, and the fighting series, Tekken 5. The PS3 itself has stumbled out the gate, promising far more than it has delivered with middling titles like Resistance: Fall Of Man and games that are already available on the 360 and look and play no better. The interface is little more than a carbon copy of the Xbox's tried and true menu system with promises (always with the promises) of a "Second Life"-style friends' lounge coming up. Let's not mention the disgraceful behavior of Sony's supporters on launch day as customers physical fought each other for the few consoles that Sony had available to sell. Oops, I just mentioned it! I miss my Zelda and my Final Fantasy, but the Xbox Core Console USM simply rocked my world when it came out. Microsoft took the classic home console and changed it forever, essentially transforming it into a specialized PC designed just for gamers. Featuring original, groundbreaking franchises like Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, while bringing in great PC ports like Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (Game of the Year) and allowing you to download music onto to your xbox and program it like a jukebox or ipod with independent playlists on your television (you could even put customized soundtracks into some games!), Microsoft pulled me away from Sony's RPG paradise. The Xbox Live service is a smashing success and was/is probably the single-biggest draw of the system. Finally, console gamers had a comprehensive, easy to use service that allowed them to crush strangers and friends alike in spirited multi-player battles and wars, meeting new people all along the way through live voice chatting. Last time around, Microsoft was the new kid on the block, coming late to the game with something to prove. This time, the xbox 360 was first out of the gate by a mile with a price tag that puts it right smack in the middle between the cheaper, kid-friendly Wii and the ridiculously pricey PS3. With great franchises new and old like Dead or Alive 4, Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, the smash-hit Gears Of War, zombie horror-fest Dead Rising, and the promise of Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil on the horizon Sony is losing ground fast in the quality franchise department and has shown us very little in return so far, though they have maintained their "We're Sony, bee-yatches. We'll do what we want and you'll buy it!" attitude towards their fans even as they struggle to catch up to the Wii and 360 by attempting to copy them while dismissing them as "last-gen". And let us not forget Microsoft's unstoppable Halo 3; an ace in the hole if ever there was one. The 360 is constantly catering to the most loyal gamers, 20-somethings with some -but not limitless- disposable income and no time to waste on endless throw-away games or kids' stuff. Xbox live has only gotten better with downloadable arcade games (including Street Fighter 2),upcoming game and movie trailers, hi-definition online movie rentals, dozens of television shows available for purchase, free playable demos for current and upcoming games, and a fantastic online gamer community. Nintendo and Sony both have a lot to prove if they hope to ever even compete with Microsoft online. The xbox 360 now allows you to play every single game on the system with any custom soundtrack you can dream up. Good God, that is awesome. It will interface with everything from your ipod or PC, to a USB keyboard usable for future MMORPG's and the current PS2 port Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia, Rise Of The Zilart, Treasures of Aht Urhgan. To compete with the PS3's blu-ray compatibility, Microsoft gives us the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player which gives you the OPTION of upgrading to a new DVD format rather than Sony's built-in cost that you pay for whether you want blu-ray technology or not. After all, there is a format war going on and either HD-DVD or blu-ray (or even both) may become the next Betamax or minidisc in the future. All of this is just one gamer's opinion and I think I've made some good points without being too biased. After all, I'm an old-time Nintendo and Playstation fan myself. Nintendo has more than held it's own with it's mainstream innovations and stranglehold on the handheld market, but Sony hasn't fared so well and disgruntled fanboys must deal with the fact that the xbox 360 kicks major tail on all fronts. The 360 has almost all of the best games and console exclusives (though not as many recognizable characters as Nintendo), the coolest interface and features (though without the PS3's raw power) so far in a home system, and all at a medium price (cheaper than PS3, more expensive than the Wii). In other words, the perfect system right here, right now.

Answer
The "Wii" is winning the console war..

so the Wii Wins in your stupid argument.

What are the features of an Xbox and a PS3?

JOG

Answer
Well let's put them side by side to make it easier.

PS3 - Blu-ray player, 1080p resolution, built in WiFi, Free Online Service, Web Browser, Cell processor, Bluetooth 2.0 (use your existing cell phone headset) , Netflix Support, USB Charged Siaxis Controller (No batteries needed ever).

XBOX 360 - Dual layered DVD rom, Add-On WiFi extra $100, Xbox Live $50 yearly fee, IBM Power PC CPU, No web browsing support, Netflix Support, Plug N Play charge Kit extra $20, headset extra $20 wired or $100 wireless.

If you want a solid gaming experience then you'll find it on either console as they both have great and similar games. Xbox isn't just for shooters and PS3 isn't just for RPG's. But, when it comes to your multimedia experience then it's hands down PS3. If you want to watch full HD movies on XBOX then you have to purchase them from the Live marketplace at around $10 for a rental. You can also stream HD through Netflix with a decent IP. With the PS3 you can stream HD from Netflix as well, rent Blu-ray movies, buy Bu-ray movies, Rent on PSN store and for the extra savvy you can play (mkv files) from an external HD or thumb stick, which are Blu-ray format movie files you can get from any number of sites. You can also keep video files on your PS3 from an external HD or thumb stick and use it as a video jukebox if you want. I own both systems and if I had to choose only one it would be the PS3. There's just so much more than playing video games that you can do with it. Also a bonus is that BD-discs have a scratch free coating, so it's almost impossible to scratch your disc's. Which makes for a better resale value when you trade them in when your done.

I have a Sony blu ray player and a Samsung hd computer monitor with dvi input. Is there a way to hook my blu ray up to my computer monitor or will I need to get a hd TV of some kind?

Answer
Yes http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360291072&sr=8-1&keywords=HDMI+to+DVI

just keep in mind monitors don't have speakers. so You won't get sound unless you have speakers attached to your monitor or computer speakers hooked to your bluray player. Also DVI does not carry audio Either.

How can I connect my Samsung Blu Ray player to the internet?

djb5474

I have a samsung blu ray player that has an ethernet jack to connect to the internet...but my hub is downstairs and running a wire isn't an option. I have wireless throughout the house...is there a way to transmit the wireless signal to *something*, then run the ethernet cable from that to the blue ray player. Thanks. Look forward to hearing some ideas cause now I'm stuck.

Answer
I had the same problem, if you're wireless router is a G series (80211.g) all you need is a range expander. I picked up the Linksys WRE54G which plugs into an electric wall outlet. The WRE54G connects to my 80211.g router wirelessly. The WRE54G has a ethernet port on it that I run into my Blu-Ray player and all works well.

If your Blu-Ray player is a Samsung BDP-1500 you might need two things to enable the BRLive feature. 1: You'll need to update the firmware (see Samsung website for instructions) 2. You'll need to plug in a USB flash drive into the back with at least 1-GB of space (this is required for external storage). All of this should be stated in the users guide, but a lot of people just expect to be able to plug in the ethernet cable and everything "just work", unfortunately it's not that simple.

What is a good and reliable blu ray player?

timster799

I would like to a recommendation on a good blu ray player. Should I get a standalone player and buy a Playstation 3 because of their reliability. Any recommendations is appreciated. It will be connected to a HDTV 1080p hi def TV.
I meant to say -- should I get a standalone player OR instead a Playstation 3. Thanks.

Answer
As of right now the PS3 is the best choice....WHY?

Well right now the PS3 is one of the most reliable, durable and cheapest blu-ray plaer on the market today. THe PS3 is also the very few blu-ray players that can updates its firmware to the latest profile.

With this $399 price you get a blu-ray player and an ultimate game console which plays high def games, free online gameplay and can even install Yellwo Dog Linux operating system on the PS3 to use as a computer operating system...

So unless some company company comes out with a stand alone blu-ray player less than $200 or $300 the PS3 is your best choice.

Do you need to purchase any cables seperately when you buy a Blu-ray player?

shismerf

If you have a 1080p television and then you buy a Blu-ray player, do you need to buy any HDMI cables seperately or are they already included with the Blu-ray player?

Answer
Check the box -- it should say -- but you will be pretty safe to assume an HDMI cable is NOT included.

BUT, don't feel you have to buy the expensive cable the saleperson will tell you that you need. Read the article at the link. Monoprice HDMI cables (~$10) are perfectly adequate for 1080p up to 10'-15'. For longer distances or if you are really fussy check out Bluejean cables (2nd link)

where did the black bars go on my widescreen dvd's using a blu-ray player?

blu ray player black screen
on Sony Bdp-s590 3d Blu-ray Disc Player With Wi-fi Black by Sony Now ...
blu ray player black screen image

Colin K

I just bought a blu-ray player. I have a 16:9 widescreen tv. Unlike most people, I enjoyed the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen because you are able to watch the movie how it was intended to be seen. Well, now that I have a blu-ray player, when I watch widescreen dvd's (not blu-ray discs, but DVD's) I dont see that black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Why?

Answer
It could be because the aspect ratio of the DVD is the same as the TV (16:9). There are widescreen anamorphic DVDs that have content even wider than 16:9, so for those discs you would still see letterboxing above and below, even on a 16:9 TV. So check the back of the DVD case and look for the aspect ratio, if it says 16:9 then it is normal for it to fill the screen completely.

There is one other thing that could be happening. If you connected your Blu-ray player to the TV with a yellow RCA cable for video, then you are not sending a 16:9 image to the TV, you are sending a 4:3 one. In that case the player could also be set to crop a widescreen DVD presentation down to 4:3 (hiding the letterbox effect). Then the widescreen TV would stretch the cropped, 4:3 image back out to 16:9.

If this is the case, you should connect your player to your TV using component or HDMI (preferred) cables. That allows the player to send a widescreen, HD image to the TV.

Can I watch a full screen dvd video in widescreen (with black bars) on my Blu Ray player?

mnn n

Is it possible to watch a full screen dvd in widescreen on my blu ray player?
What i am trying to ask is..is it possible to watch a full screen dvd in widescreen with the black bars at the top and bottom..please and thank u

Answer
I am not sure what you are asking. Any standard dvd should be playable on a blu-ray player. If it is a wide screen dvd then it should display in wide screen format (some wide screen formats cause black bars at the top and bottom of the screen). If it is a full screen dvd (4:3) and not a wide screen dvd then you will see it in 4:3 (with the black bars of the right and left sides of the picture). However if you are asking if a full screen video will magically become wide screen if you play it on your blu-ray player then my answer to you is no it will not.

edited.
What i am trying to ask is..is it possible to watch a full screen dvd in widescreen with the black bars at the top and bottom..please and thank u.

If you stretch or zoom the picture you will make fill the screen but it won't be like a true wide screen video. Stretching will make things wider than they should be and zooming will cut off the tops and bottoms of the videos.

I have said this before and I will say it again.

If you put a full screen (4:3) video into your blu ray player and it is set for a "normal" picture (not stretched or zoomed) what you will get is 4:3 video with black bars on the right and left sides of your screen. I have watched videos that were full screen and on my wide screen tv they only show in 4:3 with black bars on the right and left sides.

You will NOT get a wide screen video with black bars on the top and bottom. How could you when the information on the video is not there? You would need a wide screen version of the dvd in order to get a wide screen video. This is why, when I started buying dvd's I bought wide screen versions even though I only had a standard 4:3 television at the time. I knew that sooner or later I would buy a wide screen tv and would be able to enjoy the videos in wide screen.

Using my TV's Ethernet port to play ripped Blu-Ray movies directly from my computer?

Rob Gane

I would eventually like to start my collection of Blu-Rays, but I had an idea that instead of buying a Blu-Ray player and hooking it up to my TV, I would just buy a Blu-Ray writer for my PC and rip the movies to play directly from my computer. Would this work? How does the quality and performance compare as to playing it from the disk on a BR player?

Thanks.

Answer
What you need is a way of streaming media to your tv. You need to find out wether your tv accepts media servers...eg. servio, xbmc, plex. and does it use services like samba and or upnp. If yes then use your pc to stream files via either upnp samba to your tv with a one of the above programs ( there are more like mediatomb for linux.)

The quallity will stay the same so long as you ripped the blueray without compressing or lowering quality.

Just make sure the connection can stream fast enough for the film to buffer. I recomend using a direct LAN connection or homeplugs with a gigabit connection.

Hope this helped.

Does the new Macbook can play a downloaded movie in Blu-Ray in 1080p?

Rh3in

I'm downloading a Movie in Blu-Ray 1080p and I wanted to know if my macbook can support that and play it.

Answer
I'm assuming you are downloading it from a torrent site. The file is probably a avi or rar, which means you will need some stuff to get it to play: Xvid, Divx, Perian, VLC Player and UnRar. The first 3 have all sorts of plug-ins for quicktime to play AVI. VLC is a player that is very helpful when Quicktime can't open a file. UnRar turns Rar files into playable files. If you get spotty graphics on Quicktime and VLC, try Plex.

Your macbook doesn't have 1080p resolution. You could hook it up to an external display that supports 1080p if your graphics card supports 1080p.

I would not do this if you have a 2006 or 2007 without checking with someone more knowledgeable than me first. The 2006 and 2007 models have GMA 950 graphics cards and they have had some problems. So, I might be afraid of it blowing out the graphics card. Apple has extended the warranty on the those graphics cards because of the issues.

Next time save yourself the extra problems and download stuff in standard def.
