what colours can a laser pointer come in?
and which are the most powerful(in order plz)
cheers :P

Answer
Commonly, Red then Blue then Green. Red is the weakest, green the strongest.

You can get a red pointer anywhere. I haven't seen blue lasers commercially available but they're a part of a blu-ray player so you could probably transplant one to a pen if you hacked it. I've seen green lasers available for order as the most powerful lasers available to the public, but they aren't particularly cheap.

I need to make a some object that shoots out light... therefore a laser.... lol but anyway

I need step-by-step instructions on how to make a fairly easy laser. I know you need a diode from a cd player but I need instructions on how to attach the wires and other things... I plan on buying the parts online.
I want to know how to do it and plus if I make it out of nothing and retrieve the parts and put it together myself I have a sense of accomplishment

Plus it'd be way cooler than buying one... more fun...and no one else in my grade could begin to make a laser pointer
tytytytytytytytytytytyty Yoho ....

Best answer

as long as you DO have to put it together

Answer
cd diodes are IR so you will no be able to see it. If you own a digital camera and it doesnt have a IR filter you would be able to use it to see the light.

You would be able to see a blueray diode but they're not easy to come by so you would have to buy one off ebay

The main problem with both is the lenses on the lasers are focused around inch away from the diode to read/write on the disk. There by they really dont look all the much like a laser but more like a led.

You can buy something like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/150mW-405nm-Blu-ray-Blue-Violet-Laser-Diode-Module-Kit_W0QQitemZ270430046283QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ef6e3084b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1205|293%3A1|294%3A50

Comes with a diode and a driver that would have to be wired up. There are other kits like this that are cheaper if you look around.

What is the best home theater in-a-box for under $500?

Joe.R

If this includes a Blu-Ray player, or has one built in, I will go up to $700.
Bonus question: What is the new standard for surround sound? When I stopped following this stuff in the early 2000's it was 5.1 channels. That's what most DVDs supported, and that is the amount of speakers most home theater systems had. Is it now 7.1 speakers or more?

Answer
All-in-one kits with a built-in DVD or BD player are not good. You do seem to get a lot of toys, but the basics are missing: Quality amplification = No. Variety of inputs = No. Upgradeable components = No. You'd be far better off looking at a Blu-ray player + AV Receiver + 5.1 speaker package (satellites & active sub).

Firstly the Blu-ray player. You've allocated up to $200 for this. For under $150 you can have a Panasonic or Sony 3D Blu-ray player with wireless networking. If you are not bothered about 3D and have no plans to change your TV for a 3D capable one in the near future then save some bucks here and just go for a basic one, but the price difference is shrinking all the time so the saving might be less than $20 so why not have the 3D player anyway. There's no issue mixing brands either between the BD player and the audio gear.

As for home cinema kits, Onkyo and Denon and Yamaha all make packages with decent AV Receivers and speaker kits as a bundle. Most are 3D capable, and a few are 7.1. My view on 5.1 vs 7.1 is go for it if you have an unlimited budget and a really big room. However, if you're working to a strict budget then it's better to do 5.1 well than stretch things and do 7.1 badly.

New sound formats - The important ones for performance are DTS-Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD for Blu-ray audio, and Dolby ProLogicII (DPLII) for any stereo sources you want to have in surround. All of the kits I'll recommend do these formats.

ARC - Audio Return Channel. This is new feature added in the latest version of HDMI - the 1.4 version. If your TV and AV Receiver have the ARC feature then you no longer need an optical connection to get sound from the TV back to the surround kit. The HDMI cable will carry sound back.

Other things to consider... Blu-ray players often have streaming features (YouTube etc) and also require periodic firmware updates to cope with new encoding and features on discs. This is done via the net. A wired network connection is best but wireless will do too. There's also a good chance that the receiver you get might have internet radio or AirPlay. Once again a wired network connection back to your wireless router will allow you to access thousands of internet radio stations and enable you to stream music from your WiFi connected smartphone or tablet to the receiver.

Traps to avoid: "Super performance" HDMI cables. The HDMI connections from your Blu-ray player to the AV Receiver, and from the Receiver to the TV don't need $50 cables. As long as the cable is rated High Speed and meets the HDMI 1.4 spec and is of decent construction then all will be well. Avoid the cheapest the Ebay or the web has to offer. Those really tend to be crappy. $10 is a reasonable amount for a 3-5 ft cable.

All the following have HD audio decoding, DPLII

Yamaha YHT397BL - simple 5.1 surround system sold via the electrical barns. 3D and with ARC. $449

Yamaha YHT497BL - alternative to 397 - sold via specialist dealers. $430-£479. The 397 has the same basic spec but better speakers.

Yamaha YHT597BL - step-up model with net radio, AirPlay, Yamaha SmartPhone app (Android & Apple) which works remarkably well. $549

Onkyo HTS3500 - simple 5.1 surround system sold via the electrical barns. 3D and with ARC. Passive sub to keep costs down. $399

Onkyo HTS5500 - step-up model - 7.1 surround system, more power, better speakers, smarter auto set-up system (Audyssey 2). $599

Denon DHT-1513BA - pitched at the upgrader market - Better amp (discrete channels) and packaged with a 3rd party speaker kit from specialist manufacturer Boston Acoustics. The spec won't look as impressive but trust me, this kit is all about performance rather than bling. $599

Hope this helps :-)

How good is this computer build for moderate gaming and light video editing?

I'm wanting to build a PC that can do these things:

Play Minecraft flawlessly

Play games such as Battlefield 3, Assassins Creed 3, Half Life 2, Portal 1 & 2, Etc as good as an Xbox 360.

Play Indie games really good (Such as Slenderman, Candles, Luna Games, SCP games, etc)

Play Video game emulators (Such as Project 64, Game Cube, Visual boy advance, SNES & NES Emulators, etc)

and do light video and sound editing.

This is my build I have so far. What can I do to make it better if possible. My cap is $1200 dollars. Yes I do want the Blu-Ray player as I'm going to have this plugged into a surround sound and is going to be connected to my TV so I can watch movies on it. (How I've always set up my computers)

My plasma only supports only 1080i, not 1080p. Is it worth getting a Blu-Ray player? Would there be a noticeable difference?

Answer
Blue Ray is the only format recorded for HD audio and video resolution. You TV supports 1080i however the Blue Ray player is where the rubber meets the road for audio & video quality. HD blue ray disks are recorded in 1080p format and the blue ray player decodes and transmits to your 1080i TV. I can assure you that your eye can not tell the diff between 1080i and 1080p resolutions. Have fun.

Will blu ray players work on 1080i tvs and will it look good?

Yes they will work, and they don't look bad. I have a FullHD projector with a 100 inch screen, and I can't really tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

I want reviews and comments on the PS3 and Xbox 360 NOT the Wii. I don't know which one to get out of those 2.

Answer
Get the PS3.It has more memory than the 360.PS3 comes with a built in Blu-ray disc player and it has better graphics. If you buy a special bundle you'll get 5 Games and 3 OR 5 movies with it.It comes with one OR two controllers. It also has a web browser and a PS3 store in which you could bye games and download demos, trailers, wallpapers and more. There are update almost every month and there will be a major which will include the PS3 Home. PS3 Home is a place where you could make your own dude and his hous with different furnitures.PS3 home also has arcades and theater so we could pay and watch movie in it.PS3 also has an upscaler that will allow you to watch reguler dvds in high definition and it upscale PS and PS2 games. You could also hook in PSP if you have one and play it on the big Tv that you have. You could play online too and play with friend you meet online and chat with them on a blutooth headset.you have to buy the headset seperately. But still,it's a very good deal. So, I highly suggest it because I have both, the Xbox 360 and the PS3.The PS3 is much, much better.IT'S AWESOME MAN!!!

How do I get the best picture quality out of my new LCD TV!?

Mr.PainTra

I'm a very conservative man so dropping a couple of grand on a tv has been out of the question for me until recently. As I've never owned a hi-def set I had a couple of questions.
1. What is the best method of signal input, I see they have hdmi, component, etc.
2. Do I need a home theater package?
3. Do I need a power conditioner?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

Answer
To protect your tv from any power surge, I recommend you get some type of surge protector to plug your tv in. Home theater package is an option. If you want to get a blu ray disc player then if would be good in getting yourself a receiver instead of a home theater in a box. They are not very flexible in adding other equipment to it or for upgrading. When one item break down the whole system goes. The best cable to use is the HDMI cable, it will carry the video and audio signal in one cable. Cable or disc network provider can be upgraded to HD. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on all equipments that might interest you. Hope this will help you out.

Xbox 360 S Pros
- Nearly silent when compared with the original 360.
- Smaller with a slimmer look.
- Built in wireless N and its fast.
- Integrated optical audio.
- 5 usb ports.
- Internal, but easily accessible 250gb HDD on the bottom of the console.
- Uses half the power of the original.
- Works with most of the old accessories, including the transfer cable.

Xbox 360 S cons
- The IR receiver is located lower on the console and appears to have a narrower field. So depending on setup using a remote maybe a headache.
- Only comes with standard def av cables.
- Does not use the old memory cards or hard drives.
- Touch sensitive buttons that when touch emit a soft tone.

Morgan

I bought an external hard drive. I want to play my digital movies on my TV. I have a Panasonic Vera that won't play MP4 (the format my movies are in). I know i can just convert them but the file browser is also very clunky and unattractive. I also have an Xbox and Samsung Blu-Ray player. My Xbox wants me to format the drive before i can use it, and the blu-ray player works, but it is extremely clunks and unattractive as well, which will work for a while, but i don't play to use it in the long run. Is there something I can buy that i can plug my 1TB hard drive into that plugs into my TV and can browse files and play video other that my laptop? or maybe some device i can buy that i can put my movies onto that is designed exactly for what i described i want to do?
'aight doug. I think i'll try that plugging into the router thing. If that doesn't work, the Roku an WDTV look awesome. but, so if i plug the harddrive into my router, how would i access the files from my TV and stream them? I have relatively new Netgear WNDR3800, along with all those devices i listed above.

Answer
There are a number of ways to do this. One is to use a Media Player (a hardware box, not the Windows Media Player software, although that can be made to work also with many video formats).
The Western Digital TV player already mentioned is one with USB port to accept an external flash drive or HDD. This has features like optical digital audio out, HDMI out, and a remote control:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A5588916&dgc=ST&cid=72662&lid=1838884&acd=123098073120560

Another very popular one is the Roku box - very highly rated with same features looks like this:

http://www.pcrichard.com/catalog/product.jsp?modelNo=3100R&utm_medium=cse&utm_source=GoogleBase&CID=Google_PLA&CAWELAID=1492206696&catargetid=1560497233&cagpspn=pla

There are others - just search [streaming media player] to find more (Netgear, Linksys, etc).
I stream movies all over the house using our home Wi-Fi network and our computers to play the files (either from system HDD or external) either with Tversity media streaming software (there is a limited function free version we use, and a more comprehensive paid version), and also using a free program called PMS - Playstation Media Server, using the DLNA capability of the PS3 as a media server to stream wirelessly. It's free to download and use and is very capable and functional. So the options are huge - takes a little learning to pick the best for you... Good luck!

When I connect a usb to watch a movie on my theatre system it doesn't work?

FUNK SOUL

I plugged in both a u cruzer usb (fat32 format) and a WD portable hard drive (mac 0sx extended) and neither were recognised or allowed by the blu ray player (LG blu ray wireless home theatre HB965). On the hard drive is a selection of movies of more than one file type (avi, mp4, m4v)

Answer
Its probably the resolution of the movies you are trying to play USB connections have limited resolution response, you probably need to downgrade the resolution of the movies you are trying to play in order for them to work...

Cesar 101

Yeah you see. Whats the difference in the picture quality between a blu ray player with an hdtv and an up converter dvd player with an hdmi cable connected to a hdtv? i know sorry long question but can someone please answer me Thank you.

Answer
Yeah the quality of your video is determined by how much information is displayed. Regular DVD might have 480 lines making up the picture. A BlueRay DVD has 1080 lines making up the picture. When you upconvert a regular DVD, you are basically "stretching" the picture out, but you are not getting any more quality out of it. The cable you are using is not going to matter, it is the quality of the source that counts.

For instance, if you have two of the same photo on your computer, one is 320*240 and the other is 1024.768, and you take the smaller photo and increase its size with some editing software to make it 1024.768, you know its not going to look as good as the one that was 1024.768 already. Same idea.

What is the difference between DVD and Blu-ray home theater system?

TM0727

I was just wanted to know if the price is higher on the Blu-ray home theater system because of the Blu-ray player itself. Is there a difference in the quality of the sound produced? Or is it just the fact that one has is just a DVD player and the other is a Blu-ray player?

Answer
You have answered your own question. The only difference is the blu-ray player. If you were to play a DVD in both systems, they would sound the same, but blu-ray on its own has better sound and picture than DVD, regardless of the system it's played on. If you want a system that plays blu-ray, get one of those.

I have a sony BDP S480. Its a 3D Blu ray player and it is quite badly out of sync. I have tried the A/V sync option and that just makes it worse. If it makes a difference the tv is a Samsung UE40D6530 LCD/LED HD 1080p 3D TV.

Answer
Many home theaters have the ability to inject various delays in the audio stream to deal with this very issue. Don't know how the TV deals with it. This is something you can't auto fix.

Can a blu ray dvd still work even without a blu ray tv?

Nicole

I just found out you actually need a blu ray player to play blu ray dvds, talk about dumb moment, though i didn't know they existed until now. Anyways, I've decided on getting a blu ray player for this DVD i bought and really want to watch in blu ray but i've been told i need a blu ray tv. Do I really need one? Does it make a difference? I do have an HD TV so is that good enough? Also do I need a 3D Tv to watch 3D blu ray movies?

Answer
There is no such thing as a "Blu Ray TV". You need an HDTV to take advantage of Blu Ray resolution.
To watch 3D Blu Ray discs, you need a 3D Blu Ray player & a 3D TV. Calling a Blu Ray disc a "Blu Ray DVD" makes as much sense as calling a DVD a "DVD CD".

You will need PowerDVD which costs $90 or WinDVD which costs $60. They both have 30 day free trials. I don't know of any free media programs that play Blu-Ray discs. Maybe in the future.

Which is the best quality of Lord of the Rings home video available?

aditya

Is Bluray the highest quality I can get? I want to watch the Lord of The Rings trilogy at home, in the highest quality possible. Which is the device/format that can the ensure the highest quality experience?

Answer
At the present time if you want to obtain the maximum video picture quality you should purchase The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy - Extended Editions on Blu-ray Disc.

A little supplemental information that may be worth your consideration: Blu-ray Disc provides a good starting point for those who want (and can afford) the ultimate large-screen video system. Such a system would consist of a high performance Blu-ray Disc player, e.g. the Oppo BDP-103 Universal Network 3D Blu-ray Disc Player, paired with a next-generation Full 4K monitor or better yet a Full 4K projection system such as Sonyâs VPL-VW1000ES 4K Home Theater Projector and a 120- to 150-inch projection screen. Both the Oppo BDP-103 and the Sony VPL-VW1000ES provide Full-HD-to-Full-4K upscaling allowing one to obtain the highest picture resolution currently available to consumers. And to further make the case for Blu-ray Disc is that it is much easier for a video processor to upscale native 1080p (Full HD) video content to 4K than would be the case with 480i (DVD-Video) or even 720p video content.

Quoting Sonyâs white paper on their VPL-VW1000ES projector: âThe VPL-VW1000ES projector can upscale 2K and HD signals with an adaptive super resolution algorithm that approaches the quality of a native 4K signal. Compared to native 2K display, the upscaled picture is considerably smoother.â

I just got a new blu-ray player and I've never owned one before. I know about hdmi cables but are fairly new to the coax cables. So do I need the coax and hdmi or just the hdmi.

Answer
HDMI cable is the only cable that support the video resolution of 1080P and the 7.1 audio that is on Blu Ray disc movies. Hope this will help you out.

What receiver should I purchase under 300 dollars?

Brian

I need a new receiver that can support a HD TV, Blu-Ray player, and an Xbox 360. I currently have 2x Sharp cp-9860(bk) and 2x EPI 100v speakers. Both use stereo wire to connect to the receiver. The TV has an audio out as well. What receiver would be the best value for the money?

Answer
You will want a HDMI receiver that handles audio. In addition, with the Blu-ray player you probably want a receiver that can handle/decode high definition sound like TrueHD and DTS-HD MA found on Blu-ray movies. Here's some models under $300 that will work great for you with this in mind.

Pioneer 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver VSX-819H-K ($249.99 at Newegg)
Sony 7.1-Channel Home Theater A/V Receiver STR-DH800 ($279.99 at Newegg)
Onkyo 5.1-Channel Black Home Theater Receiver TX-SR507 ($299.99 at Newegg.com)

Links below for above examples.

My personal preference would be the Pioneer VSX-819H-K. It would work great.

Answer
I would say the first one.

First off, the Dell XPS has a backlit keyboard (huge bonus).

Secondly, it has an NVIDIA Geforce GT555m graphics card (the same as in my alienware), and it runs games great. The radeon 6770 is weaker in comparison.

Although unless you are video editing or running emulators, the processor you have chosen is completely unnecessary. Try downsizing to the 2670 (2.2GHz), because that will save a lot of money. You won't see a huge difference in performance unless, you're editing stuff or playing CPU intensive games.

Is an upgrade from a 6 y/o 55" rear projection 1080i to new 1080p worth it?

Ryan C

Hi I have a 2003 55" Mitsubishi rear projection 1080i tv (not pure hd, it upconverts). Would there is a big difference between the picture I am getting with this and the picture I would get with a new 1080p 1920 x 1080p native resolution television with all the new technologies? A lot of freinds say there wouldn't be a big difference... but I'm not sure, and can't really tell without a side by side comparison.

If it would be a big difference I would have a budget of $3,000.

I play a lot of xbox 360 and also have a blu ray player, and I have high def tv programming if that matters...

Thanks in advance!

Answer
It depends on your eyeballs basically. Some people are super sensitive to video differences. Others can't tell the difference between SD and HD. And most probably fall somewhere inbetween.

So you can't go off just tech specs or what friends say. You actually need to check this kind of stuff out in person and see what you think. See if a store can show you something you watch a lot of (sports, a DVD, whatever). Then you can try to compare it against what you're getting at home.

Personally, I think with a BluRay player, and looking a TVs in the sizes that you would want (plus your budget), you should get a Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. I can't frankly think of any better set you would get now or for the next few years. I would look at a G10 series TV if you're looking at 50" or 54". If you want to up the size, then go to the V10 series for 58" and 65" (though I think those aren't out just yet, but hopefully any day now).

In those large sets, definitely go Plasma over LED LCD or regular LCD. You'll get better color, deeper contrast, and truer blacks. Also, Plasma has a inherent response time that is near instantaneous (like a CRT or DLP), so it is amazing at fast motion playback.

LCDs are inherently bad a fast motion playback and suffer from motion blur (ghost trails). Its more obvious the bigger you go in TV sizes. They compensate for this with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rates. This helps a lot, but doesn't entirely solve the issue. And you pay a heavy price premium for this.

LCD blacks, color, and contrast with a CCFL backlight are the weakest performers out there. CRT, DLP, and Plasma all destroy CCFL LCD on those fronts. So LCD compensates for this with the LED LCD. This is a major upgrade on the lighting (using LEDs) and improves those categories in a big way. But again you have to pay a huge price premium for this.

Plasmas only suffer from myths and misconceptions. They no longer suffer burn-in. If you are concerned just crank the brightness and contrast way down on it for the first 100-200 hours and then optimize. They work in high altitudes. They are not all power hogs, there are loads of modern models that are energy star certified. Lastly, they do not have short life spans. The Panasonics are rated to like 100,000 hours which is equal to or better than an LCD (any basically means that it would likely over 10 years before you lost even 10% of the brightness, let alone saw a decrease significant enough to warrant replacing the TV).

What is a good and reliable blu ray player?

timster799

I would like to a recommendation on a good blu ray player. Should I get a standalone player and buy a Playstation 3 because of their reliability. Any recommendations is appreciated. It will be connected to a HDTV 1080p hi def TV.
I meant to say -- should I get a standalone player OR instead a Playstation 3. Thanks.

Answer
As of right now the PS3 is the best choice....WHY?

Well right now the PS3 is one of the most reliable, durable and cheapest blu-ray plaer on the market today. THe PS3 is also the very few blu-ray players that can updates its firmware to the latest profile.

With this $399 price you get a blu-ray player and an ultimate game console which plays high def games, free online gameplay and can even install Yellwo Dog Linux operating system on the PS3 to use as a computer operating system...

So unless some company company comes out with a stand alone blu-ray player less than $200 or $300 the PS3 is your best choice.

can i hook a computer monitor up to a receiver via hdmi and get it to work with other things connected to my receiver such as a blu-ray player, xbox 360, or PS3
Do you know what kind of adaptor i would need for this

Answer
You have two types of HDMI connections on a receiver one is in the other is out, your computer would have to be connected to an in on the receiver while the other component would have to be connected to an out some receivers have many in hdmi connections but only have one out and others may have two out...so you would have to have to have a receiver with four out HDMI connections one for the TV one for the blu ray and one for the x box and another for the PS3 Also al your components would have to have in HDMI most blu rays only have hdmi out same with ps3 and xbox

What do I need to do for my Blu-Ray player to play netflix on my tv?

Tianna

I have a Blu-Ray player that I can apparently stream netflix from (instead of like a wii or xbox, etc), but I have a wireless internet connection and a wired connection is required so I'm wondering what I need to do or buy to be able to watch netflix in my upstairs bedroom (router is downstairs). Thanks!

Answer
Easiest way is to connect the bluray to your router but most likely it's too far away. Second option is to get a wireless adapter for the bluray. Refer to the manual to know which ones are compatible. Third option is to use a powerline adapter like these: http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343240502&sr=8-3&keywords=powerline+adapter

What is the difference between blu-ray disc support and a blu-ray player?

wing2871x

I'm looking at Sony computers online, and a lot of the laptops say that they have blu-ray disc support, rather than just saying they have a blu-ray player. What does this mean?

Answer
It means, it is up to you to decide whether you want a BD drive or not. If you just get a DVD drive, it will be cheaper.

(Not everyone cares to watch BD movies on a computer)
