blu ray player?

Whack whac

can they play HD DVD and regular dvd? what brand is good? what price range?

don't you just hate how sony show us consumers good stuffs like PS3 and blu rays that looks sooo darn good and costs us wayyy too much?

Answer
Unfortunately Blu-Ray players cannot play HD-DVD's as they are made using an entirely different format from Blu-Ray Discs. As I understand it, old DVDs will also play on Blu-Ray players as well. (www.blu-ray.com/faq/)

In regards to brands and prices, there is a review of new Blu-Ray players at CNet that I have provided the link for below.

can i play an hd-dvd disc on a blu-ray disc player?

bryan q

is this possible?

Answer
Since the Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD formats are incompatible, due to differences in actual physical disc structure, you cannot play a Blu-ray Disc in an HD-DVD format player, nor can you play an HD-DVD in a Blu-ray Disc format player.

However, there have been indications by some manufacturers concerning the intention to make Blu-ray Disc/HD-DVD combo players, which would certainly make it less confusing for the consumer. Unfortunately, no such player has been demonstrated or offered at this point.

Other alternatives that have been proposed to solve this problem include a dual Blu-ray/HD-DVD disc. This would be a disc that would have the Blu-ray version of the film or program on one side and the HD-DVD content on the other side. A similar solution is already being provided on some HD-DVD titles, in which the HD-DVD content is on one side of the disc and standard DVD content is offered on the other side.

However, so far, both Blu-ray and HD-DVD player manufacturers have included the ability for their units to playback standard DVDs. This means your current DVD library is playable on either a Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD player.

NOTE: LG is the first manufacturer to offer a Blu-ray Disc/HD-DVD Combo Player. The BH100 features Blu-ray and HD-DVD playback at 1080p using a single drive, as well as 1080i upscaling of standard DVD content. However, the BH100 does not play standard music CDs. Also, the disc loading time for Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs has been reduced to about 25 seconds, making the BH100 the fastest loader to date. The best news of all is the $1,199 price point, which is less than some Blu-ray Disc-only players.

Help with purchasing a 40" HDTV?

Lost Pwns

I'm looking into purchasing a 40 inch HDTV, probably LCD, and I had a few questions:
1. I have Cablevision, so in order to view all the channels correctly on the HDTV, I would have to go to Cablevision and change my box over to an HD box, correct? And would I also have to purchase an HDMI cable to connect the new box to the tv?

2. I have a standard DVD player which currently connects to my tv using an S-cable. Providing the new tv has an S-cable input, would I still be able to watch all of my DVDs? Would the picture quality be significantly lower than it is on my current tv?

3. I have a Nintendo Wii, which connects to my current tv using composite cables. Again, providing the new tv has the inputs, would this picture/gaming quality be adversely affected by having a higher-quality tv? I've heard that there is a lag when you use composite inputs with HDTVs.

4. I have a TiVo, would that continue functioning the same way? Would I need a new cable to connect that to my new cable box?

Thank you so much, I'm hoping to get this tv for Mother's Day, my mom has been wanting a widescreen for so long.

Answer
1. Yes you will have to upgrade to a HD box and preferred is a HDMI cable, (buy it online its much cheaper)

Cables to Go 6-Foot HDMI Male/Male Cable - Black - $6.99
http://www.price-rank.com/electronics/cables-to-go-6-foot-hdmi-malemale-cable-black-6-99/

2. S-Video is ok, The picture would most likely look better connected to a new Tv, than your old Tv, RGB cables would be an improvement at a min.....upgrade to a upconverting 1080P dvd player or pick up a blu-ray player which will play both DVd and Blu ray...for a much better viewing experience

Sylvania Blu-ray Disc Player w/ 1080p Video Output $54.00
http://www.price-rank.com/Video_Components/sylvania-blu-ray-disc-player-w-1080p-video-output-54-00-1/

Sharp BD-HP16U Blu-ray Disc Player - 1080p video upscaling $69.99
http://www.price-rank.com/Video_Components/sharp-bd-hp16u-blu-ray-disc-player-1080p-video-upscaling-69-99/

3. Depending on what tv you purchase there may be ghosting or lad on the video display, spend a little more and get a min 120mhz or 240 mhz LCD which wil help, just remember that Plasma tv is stilll the best when it comes to video preformance, The cables will ot play a factor.... the tv will though

4. Really depends on how your setup is, does your Tivo have HDMI? if it does connect the new hd cable box to both the Tivo and the Tv, then connect the Tivo via HDMI to the TV, most tvs will have 4 HDMI inputs

You can compare prices on all the 40" LCD here

Answer
Ok first off let me start by saying that this computer your talking about is overpriced and anyone who does have it is just a rich moron games do not even require that amount of power to be run on high and at high FPS I have a great time running Crysis 2 and COD at extreme with an ATI Sapphire HD 5770 1GB. If you want your computer to run games then fine that can be easily done but I have noticed a lot of people going to buy computers and upgrading simply because they want to get into the games industry or something believe me I'm in it and it takes YEARS. Anyway here are the specs I recommend.

CPU - AMD X4 processor

GPU - ATI Radeon Sapphire HD 5770 1GB

CPU Fan - Cooler Master V8 CPU cooling system

RAM - 6GB PNY (PNY gives a much better performance than other brands in my benchmarks)

Hard Drive - Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive

Case - Keep the same

Power Supply - Keep The Same

DVD Drive - LG Blu-Ray Player/ RW+

Moniter - Just use a cheap 22" HD TV and HDMI cable

Mouse - Dosent really matter never effects performance I usually use a standard laser mouse

Keyboard - I just use the standard microsoft one

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium (Professional just has unneeded crap)

You should be able to build that for $700. Cheap and high-end that was the setup I started with

if you mean reaaaaaly high-end then this what I recommend:

WARNING this computer setup costs a $1000 plus

CPU - Intel I7

GPU - NVidia GEForce 590 GTX

CPU Cooler - Water Cooling

Ram - 16 GB DDR 4 (Import from Japan)

Hard Drive - Same as above

Case - Same As You Stated

Power Supply Unit - 1000 Watts plus from High Power

DVD Drive - LG Blur-Ray Player

Moniter - HD Projector

Mouse - same as you stated

Keyboard - Same As you stated

OS - Windows 7 Ultimate Edition

Its your choice but both run extremely well. It really depends on what you want the computer for you dont want to waste money unless your just gonna show off like most PC jackasses do. Or you can be like me and save money. Buy each part bit by bit the bottom is what I have now after three years of hammering it together and finding the money. No matter what machine you use though you will always have trouble playing Crysis its a resource eater and will lag even on the newest of graphics cards.

Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray Player?

ekawaguchi

I need one that can play regular DVD's as well as Blu Ray / HD and one that has 1080 output. And preferably under $300. Any suggestions?

Answer
Google "best Blu-ray player" and you will find several comparative reviews (the 3rd link below is to one of the better ones).

But I want to focus on the results of my search for a player. While only recommended for those who value excellent video and audio performance over loading speed and "the latest" features, the best deal right now is, arguably, the Pioneer BDP51FD from 6th Avenue Electronics. This is the $600 MSRP model that is in all important ways is almost the same as the $800 MSRP Pioneer Elite BPD-05FD ... but is on sale for $284. (link 1). Most professional reviews were on players with early firmware. Since V1.17 (Current V1.25a) this player has really come into it's own.

The main pros are: excellent build quality and components; exemplary DVD scaling, CD audio quality (Audiophiles rate it as one of the best CD players available), and BD video quality; multichannel analog audio with built in support for Dolby TrueHD (and DTS HD master to follow via a firmware update); excellent "tweekability".

The main cons are: it is Profile 1.1 (and can't be updated to 2.0 ... which means no internet connectivity for updates or on-line extras ... but relative to audio and video quality this is relatively unimportant); relatively slow DVD layer change on some disks, limited bass management over analog audio outs, some reports of sensitivity to scratches on disks.

The second link is to an owners thread ... and many posts point out that this is one of the best Blu-ray players out there in terms of performance and quality. Overpriced at $600, but a steal at $284. Most of what you need to know is in the first few posts at the second link (e.g. #7).

Again .. this is a player for the videophile/audiophile ... not for those looking for glitz.

Other choices are summarized at the 3rd link.

About Blu-Ray DVD Players?

~Ms. Q~

What makes them different from normal DVD players? Are they better?
Please help me, I am clueless :)

Answer
Blu-Ray is the evolution forwards of the DVD from a device that uses a RED laser and stores 4 or 8GB to one that uses a blue laser (the light is smaller wavelength than red light is so you can fit more information on a disc) and stores around 50 to 400GB.

the ordinary DVD can hold a 2 to 3 hour movie at 480 or 575 lines resolution with 5.1 sound using MPEG4 compression.

a blu-ray can hold a 3 hour movie at 1080 lines resolution with 7.1 or 9.2 sounds so both video and sound have MUCH M4UCH better quality using MPEG4 or newer compression plus can have interactive Java and web links embedded.

some 'upscaling DVD's can take the 480 lines and interpolate it to 1080 lines all this does is smooth edges and not add any detail. the difference between upscaled DVD and blu-ray is very noticeable (like reading with or without glasses you see so much more detail).

A DVD can play normal DVD's and CD's but NOT blu-ray disks

a Blu-Ray can play DVD's Cd's and blu-ray's

despite some people saying the blu-ray will be replaced this year by broadband its not happening as blu ray prices are coming down and sales shooting up. a HD movie on broadband can take 12 hours to download and take 2 months usage allowance and still not match the blu-ray quality.

Is voodoo available on a blu-ray player?

Desiree

You know, like how it has youtube, netflix, and hulu and stuff. Can it have voodoo too?

Answer
Do you mean Vudu? If so, then it depends on the Blu-ray player. It would need to either have the VuDu app pre-installed, or be one of the players that allow you to add new apps.

Looking for a Blu-Ray Player?

Sam Hoffma

Hi, I'm looking for a (preferably cheap) Blu Ray player that has wifi, youtube, netflix, and great picture quality. Any help would be appreciated!

Note: I do NOT need/want 3D.
Edit: I don't want a PS3. 1. I'll feel obliged to buy games and spend more money, 2. It doesn't have youtube, and 3. I have an Xbox360.
Edit again: PS3 is also way too expensive. I'm looking for like 230 and lower, preferably much lower for a non-3D (making it non-new).

I have a Samsung BDP-6300T that I got as a BD gift from my in-laws. It is awesome and the last time I saw it at Costco they had gone from 250.00 CA to 170.00CA. This unit has it all and I love it WIFI came with Lord of the Rings, all cables too but would recommend a higher grade HDMI cable like Rocketfish or Monster for instance. Has all the apps like Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube you name it you got it as well as games, art work gallery, front media reading USB port reads everything on my external HD. Samsung also has an App for support services. What can I say Samsung products are the bomb. Good luck with your shopping.
P.S. Stay away from LG

Can Blu-Ray dvds play on a computer (windows vista) dvd player?

kixr

& what's the difference between blu-ray & normal dvds? thanks

Answer
Blu-ray Discs are read with a blue laser, standard DVD discs use a red laser, that is why DVD players cannot read Blu-ray Discs.

Blue lasers have a shorter wavelength and as such can read more data in a shorter narrower groove. This allows a dual layer Blu-ray Disc to store over 5 times more data than a dual layer DVD (50GB vs. 8.5GB). The technical maximum bandwidth of audio and video combined is 48 Mbps, versus DVD's 10 Mbps. Blu-ray also uses MPEG-4 and VC-1 codecs for video which are far more efficient than MPEG-2, which is the only video codec used on consumer DVD's.

Blu-ray can carry visible resolutions up to 1920x1080 @ 24Hz progressive and 1080x1080 @ 60Hz interlaced.
DVD can carry visible resolutions up to 720x576 @ 50Hz or 60Hz interlaced.

Blu-ray and DVD are completely different, so putting "DVD" after the word "Blu-ray" is incorrect.

Answer
LG Combo supports NTFS file system. You have 2 choices. One is to do it from windows (must be NT, 2000, or higher), or install ntfs-3g ( http://www.tuxera.com/mac/ntfs-3g-2010.5.22-macosx.dmg ) which is a free, open source addition to your kernel that will let you write to ntfs partition, and additionally, gives you a handy terminal command to format drives.

The command is newfs_ntfs-3g. First go to disk utility, and select your usb drive. click on info in the left upper corner. The line you have to remember, or write down, is disk identifier. It will be probably something like disk2s1. Close disk utility. Make sure your usb drive is unmounted. Now, open the terminal, and type in
sudo newfs_ntfs-3g -f /dev/<diskidentificator>
Replace <diskidentificator> with the disk identifier from disk utility. The command sudo tels it to do it as an administrator, so it will ask for a password. option -f will tell it to format it.

Viola, your ntfs usb stick is ready. Plus, your mac can read and write ntfs filesystem.

best blu ray player for picture quality?

Max Jane

do all blu ray players give off the same 1080p hd picture? i no the higher the hz the smoother the picture, but i cant afforded a resolution over 60hz. ive seen alot of bluray players but there all about wifi and app connections. i dont care about that. i just want to watch movies

Answer
To answer your question the hz thing is on the HDTVs NOT Blu-ray players. Plasma HDTVs automatically are 600Hz nothing lower and so far nothing higher yet. LED and LCDs started out with 60HZ, then 120Hz on some and it cost more to get it. Now 120Hz is at the price of what a 60Hz LED and LCD TVs use to be, and 240Hz is at the price of what a 120Hz use to be after it came out for a year and half.

As for Blu-Ray players, good ones to look at and pick from:

Pioneer BDP-430

Pioneer BDP-330

Oppo BDP80

Oppo BDP93

Panasonic DMPBD75

Samsung BD-D5700ZA

Sony BDPS580

External blu ray player to pc to tv through hdmi?

Zack

Okay, so I bought an external blu ray writer and am concerned about the quality I will receive after connecting my pc to my tv. Will my computer in any way limit the overall quality my tv will display? I asked this question of amazon, please read the conversation below.

You are now connected to Chadwick from Amazon.com

Me:If I play a blu ray movie through an external blu ray drive connected to my pc connected to my tv through an hdmi cable, will I lose any quality? What I mean is, will the quality be limited to the specs of my computer screen or will the quality be the same provided by a regular blu ray player connected directly to my tv?

Chadwick:Thank you for contacting Amazon, my name is Chadwick.

Me:I ask because I just bought a Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD 6X USB2.0 External Slim Blu-ray Writer

Chadwick:Wow what a question Zachary, being honest I'm not sure. But from experience I basically get the same quality from the actual movie or blu ray. The quality of the computer's screen wouldn't affect the out put through the hdmi. So it should be high definition right though.
I hope I answered that clear enough.

Me:Yeah but when you connect a computer to a tv via hdmi, it's just doubling the computer screen. Wouldnt that limit the specs to that of the computer?

Chadwick:Let me simplify.
Wow, I'm giving this some thought.
This is a very good question.
I think if your Television has a higher resolution than that of your computer screen then while watching a hd movie while connected to your computer through a hdmi cable. You would see a clearer resolution from the television. You wouldn't be limited to the screen of the computer. But while just surfing the net or doing regular stuff from the computer you would be limited to the quality of the computer monitor.

Me:How could the two activities produce different results?
Chadwick:Let me illustrate for you. Do you own a playstation or xbox?

Me:Yes
I see where you're going with your illustration, but it doesn't seem quite the same. Neither of those provide screen duplication or extension.
Chadwick:Okay if you were to play call of duty which the quality is 1080p (this is the quality the disc contains) then if you play on a regular tv lets say a TV with the resolution of 720p Then that's the maximum out put you would get because that's the limit the TV has while the disc can give you the full 1080p. if you had a TV that can give the full 1080p then you would see the full quality of the disc.

Me:I understand that. However, in your illustration my pc would be a PS3. I'm worried about my graphics card limiting the processing of the resolution. I think the output resolution from my pc to tv will be determined on the quality of my computer, not the quality of my tv. Say the disc I want to play is 1080i, but my tv can only process 720, I dont think it will be able to jump from 1080 to 720 back to 1080.
but my tv can only process 720 - correction - but my *computer* can only process 720

Chadwick:Well I guess in this case it may have to be trial and error. You have a good point also. So if the blu ray writer drive doesn't work out for you then you'll have a month to decide if you want to return for a refund.

Me:I wish there were an easy way to determine quality based on appearances. Being that it will be my first blu ray player I wont have anything to to compare the results against.
Chadwick:I agree, and as far as it goes for blu ray players I use my PS3 so I really don't know how best to advise you in this case. I just think it will be trial and error.

Me:I guess the only way I'll know for sure is hooking it up to my tv and comparing it to my computer screen. If it's the same quality then I'll have to return it.

Chadwick:That won't be a problem, just contact us if you need a return label.
External blu ray player to pc to tv through hdmi

Is there anything else I could assist with?

Me:That should do it, thanks.

Chadwick:You're most welcome Zachary. Have a great night. Pleasure speaking to you.
Thanks for making it amazon.

- What resolution is your tv? What is your computer model number and/or graphic/video card model number?
= No your computer monitor has nothing to do with what resolution is sent through the video cable to the tv..... = BTW, when your doing dual/clone screen or extended screen your using two separate cables right? If your using a splitter cable or something then please look below at the bottom.
= Your computer's graphics/video card has the abilities of how high of a resolution it can send (depends on the card and what video cable your using). = If your using hdmi, your graphics card should do at least 1920x1080p/24bpp/60hz.
- (If video cable is transferring 1080p, but tv is 720p, tv will downscale it to 720p). (If video cable is transferring 720p, but tv is 1080p, tv will upscale it to 1080p). (= I recommend you choose the same resolution to output on the graphics card to match the same resolution on the tv so there is no scaling). (= 1080p movie/game will look better than a 720p movie/game even if your only transferring 720p over the video cable and receiving 720p on the tv).

= (Video cables: DisplayPort, HDMI or DVI carry digital video). (DVI, VGA, Component, Scart, S-Video, or Composite carry analog video).
- DisplayPort cable (v1.2 four lane link): Up to 4096x2160p/24bpp/60hz or 2560x1600p/48bpp/60hz or 1920x1080p (48bpp/120hz or 24bpp/240hz or 24bpp/120hz for 3D). (DP v1.1a two lane link is similar to high speed HDMI v1.4).
- HDMI cable (v1.4): Standard speed up to 1920x1080i/24bpp/60hz or 1280x720p/24bpp/60hz. High speed up to 4096x2160p/24bpp/24hz or 3840x2160p/24bpp/30hz or 2560x1600p/24bpp/60hz or 1920x1080p (48bpp/60hz or 24bpp/120hz or 24bpp/60hz for 3D). (HDMI v1.0 to v1.2, high speed is similar to DVI-SL, standard speed is similar to component).
- DVI cable: Single-Link up to 1920x1080p/24bpp/60hz. Dual-link up to 2560x1600p/24bpp/60hz.
- VGA cable: Up to 2048Ã1536p/24bpp/85hz.
- Component-video cable: Up to 1920x1080i/24bpp/60hz or 1280x720p/24bpp/60hz.
- Scart > S-Video > Composite-video cables: Up to 720x480i/24bpp/60hz (NTSC countries) or 720x576i/24bpp/50hz (PAL/SECAM countries).

= (Audio cables: DisplayPort, HDMI, S/PDIF Optical, or S/PDIF Coxial carry digital audio). (Red/White or Headphone jack carry analog audio).
- DisplayPort (v1.0 to v1.2) or HDMI (v1.3 to v1.4) cable: Up to 7.1/24bit/96khz or 5.1/24bit/192khz (192khz for PCM). Up to 8 channels (7.1) uncompressed PCM and lossless compression surround sound formats DTS-HD-MA or Dolby TrueHD and lossy compression surround sound formats DTS-HD-HR, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete, DTS, or Dolby Digital.
- S/PDIF Optical or S/PDIF Coxial cable: Up to 5.1/20bit/48khz (96khz for DTS 96/24 and 192khz for PCM) (or 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete) (24bit optional). Up to 2 channels (2.0) uncompressed PCM and lossy compression surround sound formats DTS 96/24, DTS-ES Discrete, DTS, or Dolby Digital.

Which DVD/Blu-ray player plays .mkv files of USB.+BONUS:Does it also have wireless YouTube streaming?

Shreyas

Hi, I recently got a Sony Bravia EX400 40inch LCD. Since I live in a country outside the US, I am a regular downloader of TV shows that are in .mkv format that air in States. I am now in need of a DVD or a blu-ray player that will play off many of my collection of tv shows & movies that are in .mkv format. Are there any affordable ones in the market, if yes? Which are they? I really dont want to convert these to xvid/avi or mpeg format. Also an extra bonus would be whether it would have the ability to stream YouTube videos directly to the TV wirelessly.

Blu ray player quality is bad?

John S.

So i bought an LG blu ray player and the first day i rented a blu ray dvd and the picture did not seem so clear a bit grainy, so i thought it was the movie perhaps, i let it go. Today about 2 weeks later i put in the movie Troy thinking it was going to upscale the dvd (Troy is a regular dvd not blu ray cd) and it did not upscale anything. As a matter fact it looked far worse than playing in a regular dvd player.
i compared this by playing troy in my laptop and then playing it on my blu ray.

What could be the issue here? is the blu ray player faulty? should i return it? I am using HDMI and my tv is an LG as well 42 inch LCD

Answer
First - stick to BluRay for testing. The up-conversion is ... not all that it is cracked up to be.

Second - BluRay had a lot of complaints because of the film-grain that shows up on a lot of BluRay movies. This is deliberate because movies shot on film or for the theater often has film grain and the picture is faithful to the movie theater experience.

You may also need to adjust the brightness/contrast/color. Get a modern Pixar movie (Cars, Rattilloui, WallE) on bluRay and go to the disk setup menu. It will have simple test-patterns and instructions on how to adjust brightness, contrast, color. Then watch the cartoon. High quality animation like the Pixar movies should look fantastic on a HD display.

Hope this helps.

why did they put bd live on sony bdp S350 blu ray player?

i bought a sony bdp s350 blu ray player i had problems
with bd live i needed firmware update, the unit shutdown.
waiting for firmware to arrive in mail from sony. yesterday i was in radio shack i was looking at the blu ray unit
sylvania it was on sale for 139.00 they had a break in so
he sold it to me for 119.00 he also threw in a monster
cable which cost 99.00 i also got for free. the player
is awesome picture quality is great! dont buy the sony
bdp S350 only if you like problems and being fustrated
i wish i would have known the fact that any blu ray player
other than one with bd live will work. the hype swayed
me into buying the sony, also another thing i noticed
when the sony model came out there were a lot
of returns at fry's and circuit city.maybe the player's had shut
down and they didn't know about the bd live issues
knowledge is power!!!

Answer
Sorry, but the Sony player is better. Requiring a firmware update doesn't mean the player sucks any more than requiring gas means your car is no good. All you're doing is updating the software to improve your movie experience. All you need to upload firmware is a USB storage device or a DVD burner. So, with about 10 minutes of effort and a little bit of competence your Sony would have been 2.0 compliant. Not that it matters that much. I have yet to find anything interesting in the BD Live feature.

You got a good deal on that Sylvania. I still say you'll regret buying it, but you can't beat $119 for a Blu-ray player. The Monster cable isn't worth any more than $10, but it's a nice addition.

What does it mean by optional blu ray player on my laptop?

Sally

i just bought a dell inspiron 14 t4200 laptop and its amazing but i was just wondering on the setup guide is says plays or burns cd's, dvd's, blu ray discs (optional) so what does that mean? does it play them or do u have to buy something to make it play them

Answer
It means you would have to go to Dell, and customize that Inspiron 14 so that it included a Blue Ray player.

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-inspiron-14/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-14&s=dhs&cs=19
Scroll down and look at the three featured systems. Notice the green Build It Your Own Way button. Click that, and begin to customize your Inspiron 14. You will note that you can choose to have a Blue Ray drive in the unit. So the Optional notation, is just to let you know that is is POSSIBLE to play Blue Ray discs on an Inspiron 14, if you have purchased an Inspiron 14 with a Blue Ray player.

External blu ray player?

I have a toshiba 15.6 inch laptop with an I7 quad core with a speed of 2.4 Ghz and a turbo boost to 3.4 Ghz. It has 8gb of ram intel HD 4000 graphics I wanted to know if I could add an external blue ray player via USB so I could watch blu ray DVDs on it. If I can then which blu ray player is great for the money that is compatible with my laptop
How do I check if my laptop can handle 1080P resolution ?

Answer
Most USB Blu-ray external drives will work with most PCs/laptops. Your only concern will the the native resolution of the laptop screen. If that screen supports 1080 then you should be OK. If not, you're wasting your money.

Can anyone tell me if the Australian Sony BDP s370 Blu Ray Player is multi region?

I've done a bit of research but I keep getting different answers! I'm in region 4 and I want to buy a region 2 DVD to play on my sony player. Will it work, can anyone give me a definitive answer?
Rather than just copy pasting info from Wikipedia, I'd really like info on this specific DVD player, like if anyone else has tried etc. I'm looking to play a REGION 2 DVD on my Sony and I'm in Australia.

Answer
Dvd players have different regions than blu ray players. A region free dvd player has 0 on a label on the back of the player.

REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

As with the implementation of region codes for DVDs, Blu-ray Disc players sold in a specific geographical region are designed to play only discs authorized by the content provider for that region. This is intended to permit content providers (motion picture studios, etc.) the ability to support product differences in content, price, release date, etc., by region. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, "all Blu-ray Disc players...(and) Blu-ray Disc-equipped computer systems are required to support regional coding." However, "Use of region playback codes is optional for content providers..."[112] Some current estimates suggest 70% of available [movie] Blu-ray Discs from the major studios are region-code-free and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region.[113]

Movie studios have different region coding policies. Among major U.S. studios, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios have released all of their titles region-free.[114][115] Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. have released most of their titles region-free.[116][117][118] Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of region-free and region-coded titles.[119][120] 20th Century Fox and MGM have released most of their titles region-coded.[121][122]

The Blu-ray Disc region coding scheme divides the world into 3 regions, labeled A, B, and C.

Region A includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

Region B includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.

Region C contains the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People's Republic of China and Russia.

In circumvention of region coding restrictions, stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players are sometimes modified by third parties to allow for playback of Blu-ray Discs (and DVDs) with any region code.[123] Instructions ('hacks') describing how to reset the Blu-ray region counter of computer player applications to make them multi-region indefinitely are also regularly posted to video enthusiast websites and forums. Unlike DVD region codes, Blu-ray region codes are verified only by the player software, not by the optical drive's firmware.

Where Can i Find a Multi Region Blu-ray Player?

I'm looking to know where i can find a multi region Blu-ray player, it also has to be recordable, with HDD and youtube. Where can i find one at a low price?

Answer
WELL, I have also encountered this problem. And I refer to some professional software to help me change the blu-ray region code to allow me watch blu-ray movie with no region limitation instead of buying a multi-region blu-ray player. More inforamtion I learned here

Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray Player?

Eric Ver L

I want to stream netflix and hulu plus, the player is WiFi ready but I have to use a usb wireless adapter in order to do so. I don't have my own internet, otherwise I'd just connect it by Ethernet. I'm currently using my neighbors WiFi. Earlier, I plugged in my no name wireless adapter from eBay to the player and a message popped up saying the adapter wasn't supported. The box says to refer to the owners manual for a list of compatible adapters but the manual doesn't have a list of compatible adapters. So, does anyone know which adapters would be compatible with the Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray player?

Answer
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but using a neighbour's broadband is a bit naughty. Even if they gave you permission (and you do have permission, right?) then they are still legally responsible for anything you download using their connection. There may even be a question of breaking the ISP terms and conditions of service.

All of the above said, and presuming there are no legal ramifications, then you don't have to rely on a USB wireless dongle. A wireless gaming adapter will work as well or possibly better. This is a wireless bridge device that connects to the wireless network and then provides an ethernet connection. Try Googling the phrases "wireless gaming adapter" or "wireless game adapter". You'll get lots of hits. Just skip the USB versions.

Answer
Samsung BD-P1500/XEU is an excellent bluray player. I must say that the picture quality is just amazing. At first I was worried about getting the Samsung BD-P1500 bluray player because a lot of reviews complained that it freezes, skips chapters, or stops accepting discs. I've had mines for almost two weeks and haven't experienced a single problem at all, and I didn't even have to update it with the firmware. All the movies I played on it work perfectly and the dvd 1080p upscaling is excellent. All my dvds look fantastic and have better picture quality than before. Setup was a breeze; I connected this bluray player via 1.3 hdmi cable to my Samsung LN46a650 LCD tv. I watched Planet Earth Bluray and I was just blown away! The picture was so mesmerizing and just beautiful. This bluray player is definitely a winner. Overall I'm extremely happy with this bluray player!

How do I update my Blu Ray player?

Heidi K

I bought The Haunting in Connecticut and my Blu Ray player needs to be updated in order to play it.

Answer
Most Blu-ray players allow for you to update them by downloading the update on a computer and burning it to a disc. The disc can then be inserted in the Blu-ray player and allow it to update. Some Blu-ray players have Ethernet ports on them that will allow for automatic updating via an internet connection. Others have usb ports that will allow for you to download the update and place it on a usb flash drive.

regardless of how you get the update to the Blu-ray player, the update should be available for download from the manufactures website.

What Formats Can Blu-ray Players Play?

Psychopath

I have a friend who burned the entire Doctor Who show from beginning to last episode, and at one point I was watching them on my xbox, but the earlier episodes seem to be in AVI file format. He said his family watches them on their Blu-ray player, and I was just wondering do all Blu-ray players play ordinary file formats or do you have to have a special brand or model and if so what brand/model?

Answer
All Blu-Ray players can play Blu-Rays, DVDs, and audio CDs. Most of the players from big name brands can also play other formats including AVIs, MP3s (for music), Photo CDs, VCDs, etc. Just check the specs or look on the box and it'll be spelled out.

But compatibility with these other formats may not be 100%, especially for formats that have a lot of variation such as AVI - for instance AVI can use one of dozens of different video and audio formats, and you can't expect a player to be able to handle all of them.

Blu-Ray player price?

im looking for a blu-ray player around $150 or less. anybody know of any. and i would prefer if it is not a black friday only sale.

thanks in advance

Answer
I am assuming you live in the United States. If so, there are good sales on Samsung and Sony Blu-ray players for 199.99 at bestbuy.

Samsung BD-P1500
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8735327&type=product&id=1201913483931

If you can stretch out an extra $50, this is a superb blu-ray player. It is profile 1.1 out of the box but samsung includes a USB 2.0 drive in the back of the unit so you can update it through USB or even CD to be the new 2.0 profile standard. I know a few families that own this exact player and none of them have had any problems. The player has relatively slow loading times when loading blu-rays but that is to be expected with all blu-ray players. Samsung includes a loading icon to remedy this which can allow you to at least know when it is loading and when it is not. The sony player is very good as well since Sony are the main innovators of blu-ray.

If the extra $50 is too big of a stretch, there is an insignia blu-ray player going for $149.99 at best buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8777344&type=product&id=1204332499513

Unfortunately with this unit, there is no ethernet port in the back or a USB port in order to upgrade to profile 2.0 so it is not exactly future proof in terms of extra content if that is what you enjoy in blu-rays. I personally do not care about the extra features they bundle and always just watch the movie. If you share the same views then this player would be fine as it plays blu-rays fine. The main downside with this player is that the display isn't exactly the brightest and it does not bear the mark of the popular companies such as Samsung, Sony, LG, Pioneer, etc. that make quality products day in and day out.

Hope I helped.

Should iI buy a Blu-ray player?

Q. I am not sure if it will make that much difference, because my tv is only 720p, it is a samsung 32 inch. What does anyone think, is it worth it?

Answer
picture-wise you probably won't notice much difference.
audio-wise, blu-ray has some lossless formats, so if you have a decent sound system you can notice a difference provided your equipment can properly decode them.

i myself have delayed upgrading to blu-ray, even though i have a 1080p tv. although some blu-ray discs can be found on sale for 15 USD or less, most titles are priced around 30 or more USD. Sorry, I'm not paying those prices. I used to pay that much for movies on 12 inch laserdiscs and ended up replacing them with dvd. i'll wait awhile longer. i've also curtailed buying many new dvd's. if there's something i really want i'll buy, otherwise i just download. eventually i'll buy blu-ray. i've also read some player reviews -- i want to get one that has the shortest delay (from time you load disc until time it starts playing).

Should i add a Blu-ray player to my Laptop (HP DV6T QUAD EDITION)?

Zane Bloun

i am about to purchase my customized HP Laptop through their website. one of the customization options is to add a blu-ray optical drive. should I? is it worth the $75?

Answer
If you are in the USA, first read about owner surveys of their laptops and ignore the overpriced macbook:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html

Then go to Lenovo.com and compare the DV6T to a Lenovo Y580 IdeaPad - 59345717 - Dawn Gray: $999.00
I don't see a DV6T Quad addition offered at their web site, but when I have tried configuring up options to match the Y580, I could not get the the graphics level and the overall price was $300 higher and quality no better.
Getting a blu ray is a choice. Do you watch many blu ray movies on your laptop, or connect to a TV without a bluray player?
The $1000 Lenovo is:
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM (Faster than 3632)
15.6" 1080p display
GTX 660M 2GB graphics:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
8 GB 1600 speed ram, 1TB HDD, backlit keyboard, bluetooth, bluray, 6 cell polymer battery.
There are cheaper models around.

ACER 5920 LAPTOP BLU-RAY PROBLEM!!10points!!!?

hey yallll

hey there i just got dead space downfall on blu-ray and it doesn't work. this is the first time i have tired using a blu-ray disk on the laptop. I put the disk in and it doesn't read it. i can hear the laser reader moving for like a second and then...nothing. HELP WOULD BE GREAT PLEASE.

Answer
Are you sure the player in your laptop is a Blu-Ray player?

I looked up the Acer 5920 online and according to the specs, it has an HD DVD / DVD-RW drive, not a Blu-Ray drive.

HD DVD is/was a competing technology and is not compatible with Blu-Ray discs.

Do you have a Blu-Ray set top player that you could test the disc in to rule out a bad or dirty disc?

If you're 100% positive that the laptop has a Blu-Ray drive and not just a DVD or HD DVD drive then try to play the disc in a set top player or another computer that has a Blu-Ray player

If the disc can be read without problems, then I would say your laptop player has a hardware problem and you should have it checked out by a technician.

Blu Ray update firmware?

tmurph9903

I have a memorex Blu ray player that i got for christmas. When i tried to watch Horton Hears a Who, however, it said i needed a firmware update to watch..

i tried several times to download the firmware on to a CD-R disc and put it in the player, but it never worked. Can somebody help? Is there any way Memorex would send me a CD with the firmware already on it?

i have a Mac.

thank you..

Answer
Well, i dont have a Memorex blu ray player, but i have a Sony. when you download the firmware, you cannot burn it to a disk as a data CD, you have to do the Burn Image option in your burning software. i just did this yesterday with my Sony, so it should be the same with Memorex.

Sony offers that you can request a free firmware CD via mail, so i'd imagine that Memorex does too, contact their support.

Will DVD players be too obsolete to repair?

greg_novel

With the advent of the Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray disc players, will DVD players be too obsolete to repair?

Answer
It's not a question of obsolescence, DVD players are just like most consumer electronics ... they cost so little for all but top level models that repair is uneconomical. In general, it isn't worth fixing anything significant on ANY consumer electronics component that cost less than $300 or so ... and even then it's questionable. It's a question of cost of the repair (likely more than $100 for almost anything) and the fact that new models often cost less and work better than what they replace.

I want to buy the HP Pavilion dv9830us, which is only sold in the US. I have a relative who is there now, and wants to buy it to bring it back to the UK but we are not sure if the Blu-Ray player will only play NTSC.

Answer
Although i was not able to find a specific answer from HP's website on this exact player. I did find some language that hinted that their drives will allow you to change the region code up to a maximum of four times, once the fourth change is made that region code will be hard wired into the drive and you will be responsible for the repair cost to fix such a region code freeze if it does occur. Hope this helps

why does blu-ray not work on my portable dvd player?

Sabrina

when i put it in it just says no disc

Answer
Because Blu-Ray isn't DVD..... That's why they sell Blu-Ray players AND DVD players.
Blu-Ray discs need a different kind of laser, and store information differently.
The good news is that Blu-Ray players play both Blu-Ray discs and DVDs.

How do I make my Sony BDP-S790 player region-free? (I have purchased it from Europe - Region 2)?

Lorin Scho

Answer
The BDP-s790 is a Blu-ray player. Like all BD players it will also play DVDs. (Obvious to most of us, I know. But it still isn't universal knowledge). If you are looking for a way to make it multi-region for DVD then Google "multi region hack Sony BDP" and try some of the methods you find listed.

There is no simple handset hack though to make the player multi-zone for Blu-ray. It is permanently locked to Zone B (Europe). It will play Zone Free discs. Here is a reasonably up to date list http://regionfreemovies.com/

I'm seeing conflicting answers to this, will the PS3 play a Blu-Ray disc that is region free?

GH

I've found some titles on amazon.co.uk that are not available in Canada (or North America for that matter) and would like to buy them. These are not locked to the Europe region B/2, they are region free movies. I'm fairly sure these are made to work in any player, but just want to double-check.

Answer
Zone Free discs should play in any BD player.

3D Blu-Ray player on normal tv?

Holy Crap

I have a normal LCD 1080p tv.
If I buy a Blu ray that plays 3d movies will I be able to watch them as they were intended on my tv or do I need a 3d tv?
(I also have a plasma tv. They are both 42" if that means anything)

Any suggestions on what Blu ray I should buy?

Answer
Keep in mind to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray disc movie and 3D glasses. I just purchase an OPPO 93 blu ray disc player and it is a 3D player along with being a universal player. It is one of the very best player in the market. The price of the player is $499 (you are not going to find it for less money), I purchase my online at Audio Advisor for the price of $509.95 that includes free sales tax and free shipping. It replaced my Pioneer and Panasonic blu ray disc player for my home theater. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on the player. If the price is to high, then I would recommend the Panasonic 3D player. Hope this will help you out.

Best blue-ray player for upscaling and audio?

mike s

Just looking to get the best dvd player that will give my normal dvd's the best picture quality and the best possible audio as well, does anybody know what is supposed to have the best rating for that? THanks

Answer
The PS3 is, at best, a mediocre upscaler for DVDs. The best (reasonably priced) Blu-ray player all round are made by OPPO (See link and read reviews). Exceptional DVD upscaling, great audio and video processing (audiophile quality in the Model 95, but the 93 is excellent too), universal player (plays almost anything) ... just not the cheapest. Many believe that Panasonic makes the best "normal" Blu-ray player.

EDIT: Another response recommended not bothering to upconvert DVD. Not very useful if you have a collection of DVDs, and not acknowledging that there are big differences in how well DVDs can be upscaled. While all Blu-ray players do essentially identical jobs on blu-ray disks, there are BIG differences in how well DVDs look on different players. The Oppo and a few other Blu-ray players (some Pioneers come to mind) do a great job on DVDs. No, it's not as good as Blu-ray, but they can look pretty darn good.

Hulu plus on Panasonic Viera Cast Blu Ray player.?

calicochas

I have a Panasonic DMPBD45 blu ray player which has Viera cast and it allows me to stream Netflix and use Amazon.com and other programs. However, it does not have a Hulu Plus option, but I have heard the newer panasonic players do have this option. Is there a way to download Hulu Plus onto my blu ray player if it didn't come stock when I bought the player.

Answer
The newer blu ray players by Panasonic do not support Hulu Plus either. Only Sony and Samsung players have Hulu Plus right now.

Do you need Blu Ray Player to use Netflix?

Steven

Please be descriptive with your answer and how netflix works to be considered for best answer

Answer
No, you don't need a blu ray player. There are different ways you can stream things instantly from netflix. One way is through your computer, where you just go to netflix on your computer, type in what you want to watch, and if it comes instantly, just click play and you can watch it on a computer, the only requirment being that you need internet or wifi. You can also stream through the wii. To do this, you will need to download the netflix channel, which is free in the channel store, which is already installed in the wii. Your wii will also need to be hooked up to the internet via wifi. There are also other streaming devices through which you can get netflix, such as the roku box from amazon. This is a small box that needs to be hooked up via wifi, and you download the netflix channel from the channel store for free. Roku also has other channel options, such as the amazon instant video channel, where you can rent of buy movies to be streamed to your tv.

Combo Blu-Ray Player/DVD Recorder that can also play Netflix on demand?

Bill Couse

Does such a thing exist?
>but why dont you connect the netflix demand box to the blu-ray/dvd recorder then to the tv

I don't have a RoKu box. There are Blu-Ray players that have the ability to play NetFlix on demand content. I was hoping to find a Blu-Ray/DVD burner combo that would do the same. That would save me the approximately $100 that a RoKu box costs.

Answer
Blu ray recorders are sold in Japan, but I don't recall hearing about being able to record DVD or not, and I don't remember reading anything about special streaming like Netflix, blockbuster etc. Google japan and blu ray recorders for more info.

How do I connect to Netflix/Youtube/Pandora on my Blu Ray player?

Q. I just got an LG blu ray player...the LG BDP620 and it says that it is pandora/Netflix/Youtube/Huluplus compatible but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it! I've gone to the LG Apps center and when I search, they don't come up. Any tips??

Answer
First you have to get the BluRay player connected to your home network. Run a Cat6 network cable from your router to the player or if the player has wireless, use it.

Sometimes you have to buy the optional 'dongle' to get a player to become wireless.

If yours is like this - do NOT buy the wireless dongle. It will run you about $80-$90.

Instead - go to BestBuy and purchase a Western Digital TV Live box for $99. Get a inexpensive HDMI cable (like the Media Bridge brand for $9-$20 from Amazon) to hook it up to your TV.

This little box gives you about 30 different apps and does not cost much more than the wireless dongle which might give you ... 8 apps? It is a much better device, gives you more apps, gets updated more frequently and lets you play computer video files from a USB flash drive.

Trust me - I did the $90 dongle for my Bluray player and it works, but the WD box works much better.

Hope this helps.

Is this normal for my television to do?

inflatable

Okay so I have a 32" LG 720p and when I watched Jennifer's Body on Blu-ray, I noticed like white lines at the black of the screen flickered. This happened about three times during the movie, mostly the beginning. Now, this is not the first time. It also happened when I watched Harry Potter 6 on Blu-ray. And yes, I did update the firmware. Is it normal for this to happen? Also, when I was watched JB on Blu-ray, like in the middle of the movie, randomly the screen reads "open/close" and the disc is ejected from the player. Now THAT was the first time that happened. Am I experiencing technical difficulties here? By the way, the Blu-ray player that I have is Samsung.

Answer
Contact Samsung. Your unit is defective. Emphasis on the open/close error as it is not reading discs correctly.

How can I play movies in HD on my tablet?

jdblick100

I have just purchased a Sony Xperia z tablet running JB 4.2.2 I have downloaded a number of highly rated video players (VLC, MX, mobo, superplayer) and HD movies I've transferred onto my device all look like badly compressed 360p youtube videos, despite all the players stating they can play in HD. I must be doing something wrong because Netflix looks great, however I can't see any settings to change quality, and I realize that this sounds completely stupid.

I can't seem to play foreign films with subtitles either, or select language on dual audio files. Are these functions disabled on the free versions?

Answer
Ok dude not totally sure but what format(video codec) are they, they need to be supported you cannot plug a blu ray into them(not suggesting you are) it will need to support MPEG-2, MPEG-4 High Profile AVC, VC-1 at full hd. Suggest you convert vids to a fully compatible format, which the pc suite should do,or via third party software only guessing, hope you get it sorted

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value player, March 17, 2009
By tmark (Columbus, Ohio USA)
This is a good value for a blu-ray player with the new online features available such as Netflix, Pandora, and BD-Live. It is small and easy to install and setup. I use the HDMI output to my Samsung HDTV and the Optical Digital Audio output to my AV receiver. The Anynet+ feature is convenient which helps the Samsung components work together reducing button pushing. I hooked up an ethernet cable and easily got it online and setup with my pre-existing accounts with Netflix and Pandora. I've read BD-Live requires a USB 1GB flash drive. I have download cable modem speeds in 6MB/s range so the picture quality is very good from Netflix, I'd say equivalent to upconverted DVD quality. Audio quality from Pandora is also excellent and the commercial-free music service is supreme. Blu-ray DVDs look fantastic and upconverted standard DVDs look great too. This does not have the higher-end HQV chip to my knowledge. The face pushbutton interface is cool and has a high-tech feel to it. Load time is very fast - about 8 to 10s. The menus look good and are easy to navigate. No complaints here. I'm very pleased getting all these features for entry level money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sucks, March 21, 2009
By Nicholas Gemas (Lawrence, KS)
I purchased the Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray player the other night at a "big box" retailer. For the first 24 hours, it performed flawlessly. But starting on the second night, it started having weird problems.

First, the remote control stopped working for no apparent reason. The batteries in the remote control were brand-new lithium rechargeables (fully charged), so they weren't the issue. Then the player completely locked up (while playing a standard DVD) and would not respond to manually touching the controls on the front panel of the unit.

The front panel of the player swings open, and underneath it are six touch-sensitive controls (eject, play/pause, power, etc.). These aren't buttons that you press, they're merely something you run your finger over. All six of these front controls became unresponsive. I want to reiterate that the player completely locked up (while still playing the DVD) and would not power on, off, or eject the disk.

This all happened during normal conditions while playing a standard DVD. Since the controls on the front panel aren't actual buttons, I had to physically disconnect the unit from the power outlet in order to restart it.

I thought this was all some kind of one-time anomaly, so I inserted a different standard DVD into the player, and after 30 minutes, it starting doing this all over again. First the remote control became unresponsive, then the front controls on the unit stopped working, then I had to (once again) unplug the unit to get my disk back.

This player is going back to the store ASAP. This is the third time I've owned problematic Samsung equipment.

Considering the frustration of having this brand-new player not work correctly, and the time and effort spent in returning it, I definitely will not be buying another Samsung product again.

(I want to add a footnote about how shoddily-made these new Samsung products have been. My old plasma TV, an upconverting DVD player and this new Blu-ray player were all made by Samsung, and all have had major problems with construction and engineering (especially the TV). They really felt/feel cheap, especially compared to similar products being made by Sony and Panasonic. Just my $.02 worth.)

Can a DVD play 1080p material off a blu ray player?

Daniel

So let's say I burned a 1080p HD mkv video of about 3.4 gigabytes to a DVD-R that can hold 4.7 gigabytes. If I tried to play that DVD on a blu ray player would it retain its quality or would it automatically be lowered to 480p for some reason?

Answer
The Blue Ray player can deal with regular single layer (4.7 gig) or double layer (8.5 gig) blank DVDs that have a video file the Blue Ray player can understand. Like MTS files with AVCHD compressed video in them.

Since the Blue Ray player cannot understand what an MKV file type is, the Blue Ray player will not be able to play that video. The resolution (480 standard definition or 1080 high definition) is irrelevant.

Can you connect a blu ray player to the internet through a usb connection?

Atheos

I have a blu ray player that only has a wifi connection. There is no ethernet port but it does have a usb port. I know a wired connection is far superior than a wireless connection. So is there a way to connect to the internet with some sort of usb wire that connects to the modem?

Answer
sorry, no. See on this device it would seem that the USB is there only to use as a storage device (if you are watching movies you have saved onto your computer you watch them through a thumb drive on the player) Yes a wired connection CAN be faster....if it's over the proper TYPE! See wifi can allow for pretty fast speeds, but the USB is generally limited. USB has different types, each one faster than the last, but still fairly slow here's an idea of transfer rates! USB2.0=480mb/s USB3.0=5000mb/s ethernet= (10 base-t)10mb/s (100 base-t) 100mb/s (1000 base-x) 1000mb/s thunderbolt (only for MAC)=10gb/s (this is the fastest transfer rate you can find without specialized equipment) so that's for different types of wired connections WiFi CAN be faster, but this is dependent on how well the devices are working. Now as far as ACTUALLY CONNECTING to the internet, only with a dongle that you purchase, which ONLY allows wifi connection (pointless since you're already connected). USB isn't really made for internet but rather for file transfers. The point is, that NO you can't connect a USB port to your router for the uses that you want it for!

how can these external blu ray players play blu ray discs by using usb port?

dan

Answer
By transferring the information through a usb port? The problem would not be the speed at which the information is transferred a disc can only run so fast the player have a built in buffer in the external housing. And it will play movies but without a hdmi monitor or a graphics card that is blue ray compatible it will not offer what blue ray is.
