how does Pandora work through Blu-Ray players?

Q. I have a Blu-Ray player with YouTube, Netflix, Blockbuster, and Pandora but I have no idea how to work the Pandora. I click a station and type things in and select them but they don't show up on my tv. Help?

Answer
Pandora works the same on the blu-ray player like on the computer.
First you should make an account. I recommend getting started on your computer and making stations on your computer- it should guide you through it.
Then sign in on your tv. If you're already signed in, you should sign out and sign back in to refresh it.
Next you can make more stations. To make a station you can either type in an artist you like or a song you like. It should show you some songs and you have to choose which one you meant. Then basically Pandora takes that song and finds songs that are similar to it. You can choose if you like a song and if you do it will play it more often. If you don't like the song it won't play it on that specific station. You can skip 6 songs per hour and 12 songs per day.
And that's basically it.

Here's a website about how pandora works:

Okay, could tell me what should I get; PS3 or a 360*?

blu ray player load time comparison image

I have the money and everything. Im thinking to buy a PS3 with MGS4, Uncharted, & C of D 5. I have 500$ and I do not care if I spend it all. But im debating because the 360* has better online. What would you choose in the situation?

Answer
NOTE: Skip ahead to the *** if you aren't interested in reading an essay lol and just want to see the comparison of PSN VS LIVE (3rd paragraph from the bottom)

Why you should get a PS3 and NOT a Xbox 360

The *expected* lifetimes of current home video game consoles:

Xbox 360--2005-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it
Wii-2006-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it
Playstation 3-2015 (Sony said they made it to last 10 years, so 2006+10 years=2016, round it down just to be safe), you'll get 7 years out of it.

In short, it has better reliability, multimedia capabilities, a large list of exclusives and more coming out in 2009 and in the future and it has over-the-top graphical capabilities (google âHeavy Rainâ). And to those who say the Xbox 360 is cheaper, well then just look at the following list:

With the PS3, you get:
-A Blu-Ray player, which if you wanted one of equal value would blow at least a $700 hole in your wallet
-Free online service
-An ever-growing list of exclusives, like Resistance 2, LittleBig Planet, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Metal Gear Solid 4 and in the future: inFamous, Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain and Massive Action Game (M.A.G.âin which over 256 players will be able to play on the same map at the same time, 128 VS 128)
-More flexible in terms of hardware, e.g. swappable HDD, USB mini cable, etc.
-Built in, superior Wi-Fi
-Web browser
-A super sleek system complete with chrome trim and a slot loading disc drive
-HDMI 1.3, Xbox 360 only has HDMI 1.2 (major difference despite only a 0.1 difference)

With the Xbox 360, you get:
-DVD Player/upconverter
-Xbox live, which is $50/year, and not even worth it
-Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 (thatâs a lot of exclusives compared to the PS3, if you ask me: P)
-Ummâ¦canât really say anything about non-proprietaryness, because Microsoft inflates the prices for their accessories. 120GB for $150? With the PS3, you can upgrade to 500GB for $110!
-A 1 in 3 failure rate (it's not "if", it's "when")
-Many people are on their 5th or 6th 360's already because of RROD, and my friend is on his 12th!

So hereâs a quick run-down of what you must buy with the PS3 and 360:

PS3:
Console $400
Game $60
Controller $55
Charger $2-10--any USB mini cable will do
Total: $517 ($2 USB mini cable)

Really, if you bought all the things the PS3 offers SEPERATELY, you would be able to buy roughly 3 PS3's with that money (gaming console+computer+SUPERB Blu Ray player)

Xbox 360:
Console $300
Game $60
Controller $60
Play and Charge kit x2 $60 (for 2 controllers)
Xbox Live $60
Wi-Fi $100
Total: $640

Thatâs not cheaper, so get a grip on it! The multi-platform games are using about 25% of the PS3's graphical potential. So there's lots of wiggle room in the future for much more brighter, detailed and massive environments.

On the other hand, most multiplatform games are using about 98% of the 360âs potential. And they look the same, if not better on the PS3. At this rate in 1 year, the PS3 will have outshone the 360 graphic wise. Itâs just that the 8-core Cell Broadband Processor is very complex, and takes developers time to get used to. And they are getting the hang of things. The PS3 has a very good reliability rate: only 0.2% failure rate (note the decimal), while Xbox 360's have a 30% failure rate. So, for every 1000 of both consoles produced, 2 PS3's are defective, whilst about 330 Xbox 360's are defective. The numbers speak for themselves. Many game developers have OPENLY stated that in the near future, and right now, they will use the PS3 as a lead-developing platform, and then they will port the games to the 360.

***Xbox Live VS PSN? The only thing you are missing is cross voice chat, which can easily be solved by using a telephone, or even in PSNâs V3.00 update, which we will be seeing soon enough.***

The PS3 has sold 21 million units in 2 years. The Xbox 360 has sold 28 million in 3 years. Plus a 33% failure rate, that means that 9.24 million units are either refurbished ones or replacements. So really, the amount of one-time buyers is about 19 million. So really, the PS3 has sold 21 million in 2 years, while the Xbox 360 has sold 19 in 3 years, and the PS3 has a higher face value ($199.99 vs. $399.99)

So in conclusion, the PS3 is betterâyou get the most bang for your buck, and it's an incredibly advanced all-in-one home media center hub. You can even install Linux or Windows XP and use it as a computerâlegally! While with the Xbox 360, Microsoft will ban your 360 from certain things, if you install the OS at all (just try to bypass the security).

Hope this helps!

What are the positive and negative things about Ps3...?

Tspellpwne

I need to know...

Answer
POSITIVE
It's quick:
I'm currently testing a Mesh PC with a Core 2 Quad processor and an Nvidia 8800 GTS card inside. Even so, playing Rainbow Six Vegas is notas quick as you might think. It still takes a while to load up, and loading individual missions in the game ranges from being really quick to being quite sluggish. The PS3 is consistently good. Sure it takes a few moments to load up the games, but considering their sheer size and the amount of processing power that is involved, it's incredible.
Size/weight; Wireless networking; DVD Upscaling; User interface.

NEGATIVE
The price
A lot of folks have made a big hullabaloo about the PS3's lofty price tag, and I agree: it's an issue, though not necessarily a huge one if you look at the situation rationally. Compare the $500 base PS3 model to the $400 Xbox 360, and they're very similar from a features standpoint. Both models have 20GB hard drives and built-in Ethernet (no Wi-Fi), and they come with a single wireless controller. For $100 more, though, you're getting a Blu-ray drive and HDMI 1.3 connectivity in the PS3. By comparison, the Xbox 360's HD DVD add-on costs $200 and there's currently no HDMI option, despite persistent rumors. So when you factor in the fact that you're getting an excellent HD movie player built into the PS3, the difference in price between isn't as great as some say it is.So, the only bad thing is that it costs a little too much. That's the only bad thing. there are no problems with the system and if there is one ( you have a .11% chance of that) then send it into sony for free and get it fixed! there isn't anything wrong with it! and now a lot of the games have dropped in price! good luck!

I just bought a 55" HDTV 1080p 120HZ LED tv and now want blu ray. I have it next to my desktop tower. If I get an internal blu ray drive player in my desktop tower and my monitor comes with a HDMI port which i can connect to the tv will the quality of picture be different? Or would a regular blu ray player be better?

Answer
You can go either way (assuming your computer is capable of handling blu-ray ... check the requirements ... the graphic card must be fast enough, for example). However if you go with the built in computer drive note you can't expect to "connect (the monitor) to the TV". Why? The TV and the monitor are display devices. The blu-ray player is a source device. You can only connect a display to a source.

A stand alone player will offer other capability beside just playing Blu-ray disks (e.g. Picassa, Netflix or other services, USB playback of Jpeg and video, decoding of HD audio from the Blu-ray disk. On the other hand, a computer drive allows you to (potentially ... you have to buy capable software as well as the drive) rip Blu-ray disks to the computer for conversion or use as in media centre mode. Which fits your needs better depends on your needs.

I think you will find by the time you pay for the drive and software (and maybe to get a faster graphics card or upgrade the computer RAM) a stand alone player may look pretty good. Note that even basic players handle Blu-ray essentially identically to premium players (the extra $$ primarily buys better build quality, extra features and better DVD performance).

Unless you custom ordered it i doubt it came with a blu-ray player. You can pick one up online, in the laptop form factor for about 189.99 to 239.99$ depending on where you shop

External full sized burners, USB interface run about 169.99-200.00$

Your intergrated video card "Intel Graphics Media Accellerator X3100" May also not be fast enough for blu ray playback, Could end up with Chops, lag and tessellation errors since its the bottom o' the bin VGA card.

How well does a Blu Ray player upscale DVDs?

blu ray player reviews
on Memorex MVBD2510 Blu Ray Disc Player
blu ray player reviews image

MShinkle10

I am considering getting something to upscale normal DVDs for a new 47' 1080p HDTV. I have looked at Blu Rays for a while and have recently read that they make normal DVDs look better. If so, would normal DVDs look better on a Blu Ray player or an upscaler?

P.S. Do you have any suggestions on brands or models of Blu Ray players or upscalers?

Answer
It depends on the blu ray player some blu ray players are better at up-scaling than others....read the reviews for the player your thinking of buying to see how it does...blu ray players that get high ratings for up-scaling include some models from Panasonic Pioneer and LG what I have noticed also is that the more expensive models not only have better blu ray rendition but also do up-scaling better also, another thing I have noticed is when blu ray first came out it was a hot topic how well the blu ray player could upscale, lately its not mentioned as much anymore...

Why buy a blu-ray player if you have a PlayStation 3?

Nathan T

I don't understand why people would buy a stand-alone blu-ray player when the when (up to this point) the Playstation 3 has been cheaper. It seems like they are paying more for a product that can do less. Can the stand-alone blu-ray players do more then the blu-ray player on the playstation 3? If so, how much better is it?

Answer
Actually I beg to differ with some of the comments above.

Yes true, having a stand alone blu-ray player might last longer as it is dedicated to only playing bluray as opposed to the PS3 being a gaming system. But what PS3 has to offer outside of bluray playback is vastly better from gaming, storing videos, music, and browsing the internet.

Setbacks:
No remote control (not a big factor in my opinion, you can get the $25 bluray remote)
No dedicated chip set (Ps3 playback uses the Cell processor)

If you actually looked up reviews with PS3 vs. stand alone, its actually BETTER than most stand alone blu-ray players out there at a performance per cost stand point.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127892/article.html

The fact that the PS2 did have issues of freezing and worse picture quality with DVD playback, does not mean it will be just the same on the PS3. There's been no hard evidence of PS3's breaking down due to bluray, more than any other piece of electronic equipment. And yes I'm sure there have been minor issues with bluray, but thats consumer electronics for you...besides, the PS3 is cheaper.

"Can the stand-alone blu-ray players do more then the blu-ray player on the playstation 3?"

No. The only difference in play back is that the PS3 uses Cell, and stand alone have a dedicate chip to decode bluray. There is no loss in quality.

Hope this helps.
Honestly, I'm sure no one who has a PS3, bought a stand alone as well...unless it were for different rooms. =)

I have no clue what to buy my 50 year old mother for christmas, anybody have any ideas? I have no idea what people her age really would like, but she doesn't like clothes or shoes or anything...so i cant really think of anything else women like...somebody, please help?

Answer
I'm still 5 months from being 50, but I think I can handle this. I have horses, so anything horse related is always good. I really want some deerskin work gloves for shoveling poo. I'd love to have someone come help me organize and clean my home (without judgement!); my barn is perfect, my home is a mass of piles of stuff. I fear someone will report me as a hoarder!

I have a great blu-ray player, and my movies are all regular DVDs. It's not so much that I want new ones, it's that I want the old ones replaced? does that make sense. I also have a huge pile of VHS tapes of family and horse things that I would love to have converted to DVD, or perhaps a system so I could do this myself. I have seen these on the web that connect to your computer so you can load them onto the computer, then burn a DVD or put it on a flash drive.

I have a DSi that I love puzzle games for. I don't like shoot em up or speed games, but I love bookworm, jumble, puzzler world, Quest trio, and a recipe thingy. That's kind of a secret enjoyment.

I have a Kindle, but would love to have the new Kindle Fire($199) (I'm getting one for my 76 yo mother!) I'd like a membership to Amazon Prime ($79) so I could access all those goodies: movies, and books even without a Kindle; any e-reader or computer will do! (you can get a Kindle at Radio Shack for $79)

I hope some of that was helpful. I admit, I love gadgets, my Sketchers sneakers, and comfortable clothes more than fashion.

do i need a compatible tv AND a compatible blu-ray player to download amazon prime movies?

Answer
I think you will just need a HD TV or a computer you'll be able to watch the instant/streamed video from Amazon Prime.
A Blu-ray player is only required when you play the physical Blu-ray discs.

- doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player; #

Ps3 Slim Cons:

Answer
PS3 Slim is alot better because it is slimmer lighter and looks more trendy
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002I0J4VQ?tag=dcmb-20

Review:
As a proud owner of a PS3, I was closely following developments of when the rumored (and highly-anticipated) PS3 Slim would come out. After shelling [...] for the PS3 80GB back in 2008, I was really excited to hear that Sony not only announced a smaller version of the PS3, but also implemented a [long-overdue] $100 price cut. I immediately went out and bought the Slim as soon as possible, and am very happy with it so far. Here are my impressions:

COMPARED TO PLAYSTATION 3 "FAT"
A LOT SMALLER
I heard that it was smaller, but seeing is believing! The photos don't do the system justice, and it's not really till you see and feel the difference that you are impressed with it. If you can, go into your local game store and check it out for yourself! If you've previously owned a Playstation console, you already know the difference the slimmer version makes when compared to the original, bulky ones. What's really convenient is that the slimmer PS3 not only means your video gaming is more portable, but that you have a really convenient Blu-Ray player.

NOT A FINGERPRINT MAGNET
I love the sleek look of my PS3 Fat, but don't like how it constantly needs to be cleaned. The glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet! The matte finish on the Slim is much easier to maintain. That being said, it doesn't look as shiny and cool, but I think its convenience outweighs that.

MORE STORAGE
Storage was never an issue for me on my 80GB system, but for those who wanted more storage, you get 40GB more with this system (120GB in total). It may not seem like much, but you can hold MANY movies, pictures, and music albums with 120GB. If that's still not enough, you can always install a 2.5" hard drive yourself, or better yet, plug in an external hard drive in one of the USB ports. You can easily get a portable 500GB external hard drive for less than $100, or a bigger, bulkier one with around 1TB of storage for roughly the same. That being said, I think 120GB for $300 should be more than enough for most users, and is a significant improvement over the 80GB for $400 that people were paying just a few weeks ago!

STILL NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE
This is my one major gripe with the Playstation 3. It really wouldn't have killed Sony to include this feature, as the original Playstation 3's did in fact include backwards compatibility with older Playstation 2 games. A lot of people counter by either saying (1) it doesn't make sense to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, (2) the graphics on the PS3 are better anyway so why bother with older games, and (3) including backwards compatibility would cannibalize PS3 game sales.

While those arguments might have their merits, I'm still frustrated that my massive PS2 library can't be played on the PS3, and was really hoping that Sony would include backwards compatibility on the Slim! I loved the fact the PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 games, and really wish that Sony would reconsider this decision.

COMPARED TO OTHER SYSTEMS:
PS3 vs. WII
I think comparing the PS3 directly to the Wii is a bit like comparing apples to oranges, since they offer such different experiences. The Wii in my opinion is more family-friendly, while the PS3 is better for more graphics-intense games geared towards different gemographics. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, and I love their very family-oriented game offerings. I own a DS and Wii and still love Mario as much as the days back when I played the original Nintendo (NES). In addition, I think Nintendo's motion-sensitive controllers for the Wii are very innovative and fun to play with! Unfortunately however, for most gamers, the difference in game quality is noticeable when comparing the two systems. The PS3 has AMAZING graphics. On an HD Television, you notice such crisp details while playing the PS3. The Wii features only Standard Definition output, which noticeably weakens it when compared to the other next-gen consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360.

PS3 vs. XBOX 360
Microsoft has an impressive gaming console in their Xbox 360 and there are some amazing titles exclusive to the Xbox, but in the end you get less bang for your buck when compared to the Playstation 3:

(1) Online gameplay: You can use the Playstation Network's online features without having to pay a subscription fee like you do for the Xbox. I was never a big online gamer but now I enjoy playing against opponents online.
(2) Internet connectivity: Built-in wireless internet connectivity on the PS3 is a much better bet than having to buy a wireless network adapter for the Xbox. Of course you can simply rely on a wired Ethernet connection, but this might be inconvenient depending on your set-up.
(3) High-Def Video: The Playstation 3 doubles as a Blu-Ray player. Microsoft bet on the wrong horse when they were hoping that HD-DVD would come out the w

What do I need to do for my Blu-Ray player to play netflix on my tv?

Tianna

I have a Blu-Ray player that I can apparently stream netflix from (instead of like a wii or xbox, etc), but I have a wireless internet connection and a wired connection is required so I'm wondering what I need to do or buy to be able to watch netflix in my upstairs bedroom (router is downstairs). Thanks!

Answer
Easiest way is to connect the bluray to your router but most likely it's too far away. Second option is to get a wireless adapter for the bluray. Refer to the manual to know which ones are compatible. Third option is to use a powerline adapter like these: http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343240502&sr=8-3&keywords=powerline+adapter

How would you rate Playstation 3 as a blu-ray player?

codwhy047

I am considering asking for one for my birthday and already have a XBox 360. The main reason i would ask for a PS3 is because of its blu-ray capabilities. My friend told me that it is not a very good blu-ray player, so I am just curious.

Answer
It'll hit 9 of 10 if you have a Blu-ray remote.

How can I convert my old Home Movies to 1080p HD and then burn onto a Blu-Ray Disc?

Ben Skywal

Hey, I had these old Home Movies on Video and I converted them to DVD, now,
I am getting read of my DVDs and getting Blu-Ray, but I want to know is there anyway to convert them to 1080p HD or even just Upscale then to HD, using any free software and then burn them onto a Blu-Ray Disc with another free software.

Thanks Guys.

Answer
No point.

The DVDs will upconvert automatically on your Blu-ray player. You could go to the trouble to do the upconversion and reburn to Blu-ray, but it would be expensive (Blank Blu-ray disks are expensive, to say nothing of having to buy a burner), and it's highly doubtful the results would look ANY better than the DVDs you have now.

The truth is that even if the video is converted to 1080p it can't have any more detail than it had to start with. You have more pixels displaying the same detail as the original ... i.e. all you get is a larger file size on an expensive disk you can ONLY play on a Blu-ray player and that doesn't look any better than the DVD.

Don't waste your time and money.

I have an old HD TV (Toshiba) that doesn't have the HDMI input. I"m trying to hook up the new Blu ray player and i also am hooked up to DISH HD receiver. what's the best way to go about it?
thanks!

Answer
Not enough information. Exactly what inputs does the old TV have? Component? (Red-blue-green video plus red-white audio.) Composite? (Yellow-Red-White.) RF? (Coaxial antenna jack.) Something else?

What is the easiest way to stream Internet content?

David P

I have a new Samsung HDTV and Blu-ray player. Both can stream from the Internet. But I'm a novice in this stuff. I just canceled my cable TV service and would like to be able to stream old TV shows and movies. I also belong to Netflix. I have WiFi for my Internet connection, but it's very slow. What is the easiest way for me to watch (stream) Internet stuff on my TV? Thanks.

Answer
Run Ethernet from your router (you will have a router if it is your broadband, and you should be using your own broadband for Nretflix). Connect either the TV or Blu-Ray, whichever gives you the best choices.

Hi! A few years ago we bought a surround system that includes a dvd player. I want to buy my husband a blu-ray player for Christmas, but can we hook that up to our old dvd player to still use the surrround sound? I hope this makes sense... :)

Thanks!

Answer
Connect optical cable from Blu-ray player to system for surround sound if your system has one.

How can I connect my surround sound system to my Panasonic DMP-605 Blu Ray Player?

Wyatt

The instructions are for multiple blu ray players not just the DMP-605, and it lists how to connect 7.1ch, 5.1ch and 2ch surround sound. We have a 5.1ch speaker setup, but it doesn't show how to connect it. It only shows how to connect a different model blu ray player. Please tell if you have any information.

Answer
The instructions should be very similar for all blu-ray players, just hook up the HDMI cable and you're done. Set the blu-ray to bitstream audio over HDMI, set your home theater system's surround mode to auto, and everything should work fine.

When will developers start abandoning support for XP with new software?

Q. I am planning to continue using XP SP3 until April 2014 which is the year Microsoft will stop providing new security updates. Until then, will developers keep supporting XP for their new software? I am talking about software like Blu-ray player, 3rd party web browser, office applications, disk utilities, anti virus, other essentials like DVD burning, pdf reader, video editor and engineering software (Matlab, Mathematica and the like).

Answer
That depends on the particular developer. However, expect XP support to slowly get dropped by more and more developers as time passes, much in the way that Windows 98 support is almost completely non-existent these days.

The reason for this is that supporting XP (particularly with driver software) requires additional effort and resources on the part of the devleoper to program compatibility in. However so long as XP remains popular, then many developers will try to support it as best as they can.

You can also try DVD NexT Copy Ultimate. It's an all-in-one dvd burning program.
It is a very good dvd burning software and it takes care of the conversion for you.
So you can convert and play your movies in most standard file formats.

It also enables you to burn dvd copy protected movies and play it in your home dvd player.
It's advanced functionality combined with quality and speed in a simple and user-friendly interface makes it ideal for home and office use.
One of the best features of NeXt Copy Ultimate is its ability to burn Blu-ray discs - you can even copy 10 of your standard DVD movies to fit in 1 Blu-ray disc.
What's also nice about it is its ability to copy a DVD movie to a mobile gadget such as iPod, PSP, Zune etc.

How to Put a Digital Copy of The Incredible Hulk onto Zune?

moff_therd

Hey, I am having some trouble putting the digital copy that came with my Blu-ray version of the Incredible Hulk onto my Zune. I put it on my computer as the windows media player version, but my Zune tells me that the copy is protected. Is there anyway to get around the protection or do I have to give up?

Answer
Sadly, there is no way to put a digital copy on a Zune. I had the exact same problem. I tried a few other movies with the same results, and haven't had any luck finding help online. Until Microsoft allows copyrighted files on the Zune, we are screwed!

Will a Blu-Ray player improve the sound of a standard DVD disc?

I am thinking of purchasing a Blu Ray player and although I am aware that connecting this to my HDTV via a HDMI cable can upscale the picture quality to 1080, I was just wondering if it will make a noticeable improvement to the quality of sound. I currently have my TV connected to a home theatre system. Thanks for your answers.

Answer
There will be no improvement whatsoever from a DVD disk played on a Blu-ray player.

The player and HDMI per se won't make any difference at all unless you a) use Blu-ray disks, b) select an HD audio track, c) have excellent speakers and d) have good hearing (including knowing how to recognize good sound). For the average consumer the hype over improved sound from Blu-ray is way overblown. I have a dedicated room, a medium/high quality 7.2 surround system and have compared DD and DTS HD Master and hear very little benefit from the latter. Others may, but everything I have read says improvements form advanced audio are fairly subtle.

Can a blu ray player play regular DVDs? Also, how good is blu ray compared to regular DVDs?

Sanjay

If you put a regular DVD in a blu ray player, will it increase the quality of the regular DVD. Also, will it even play? How much better is blu ray than regular DVDs?

Answer
The Blue-Ray player would actually "up convert" or interpolate the missing lines/information from the old DVD's. Blu-Ray players are backward compatible, so your old DVD5 and DVD9 are still good. Just a small suggestion, if you are considering a Blu-Ray player, might want to just go ahead and get a PS3 since it's a player plus a lot more....
