How do you watch Blu-ray movies on Windows Vista?

I just go REPO! The Genetic Opera today, and I have the Blu-ray edition. I was just wondering what software I can use to play the movie on. Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player?

Answer
Vista (Ultimate) can view regular DVD movies without the add-on codec (i.e. a program to play movies), but it will not do BR.

Not only you will need a BR drive, you'll need a very fast computer (at least a dual-core), plenty of RAM and a dedicated graphic card (not the built-in one on the mother board).

PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra and PowerDVD 8 Ultra can play BR movies (7.3 can play HD-DVD movies, as well).

----------------

This is what it says on the box:

Due to the high computation requirement for Blu-ray discs, PowerDVD playback requires a high performance PC platform that is capable of maintaining 40 Mbps transferring of data. It is recommended that you use a system with at minimal of Intel Dual Core 3.2Ghz processors and 2GB RAM system memory (Quad Core CPU is supported.) Discrete graphics solution is also required with at least 350Mhz clock rate with 256MB VRAM. Even if you met minimal requirements, you may experience some video quality drop, frame drops or lower performance. It is recommended that all non-critical applications be closed before beginning Blu-ray Disc playback. Full CPU clock-rate is always reserved for PowerDVD Blu-ray disc playback and cannot be disabled.

Download their program to see if your system can handle a BR movie.

How to get blu ray to work?

Typhoon

Dumb tards at Microsoft screwed Windows 7 into not having a built in Blu Ray player. How can I play my videos now? I tried to download PowerDVD 9 - graphics card not supported, also Corel WinDVD - Disc not supported. I have an LG DVD/Blu combo optical drive and the software I got to work in Vista was PowerDVD. Could you help me out?
The graphics card should be fine, albeit I ran BluRay movies fine in Vista.

Answer
graphics card may not be big enough to support hi def resolution of blu ray upgrade graphics card i have only a radeon 2400hd pro and it has a hdmi output a dvi output and a vga output and it works good for me card only cost 75.00 but i bought it at wal-mart it works good enough for me it can support up to a 32 inch lcd tv this is what i use to watch all movies tv an internet all through my computer only have cable to have internet hope this helps a little someone may know more but i don't have windows 7 upgrade but had the same problem with installing a combo drive like you have but i have a liteon blu ray dvd player/burner i updated the software that came with the player and it worked for me after i fixed the graphics card

I have a 720p hd tv-but also have a blu ray dvd player, and I know they play at 1080i--just wondering if watching blu ray dvd on a 720p is redundant in that an upconvert can give the same image. Just curious???? I plan on getting a 1080--just waiting to see the 120hz's to come down. thanks.

Answer
There is no 'stretching' involved.

It's not making it true HD

What they are doing is basically tons and tons of math. The signal on a DVD is 480 pixels by 720. So a chip in these players is taking that and making it into 1080x1920 i or p or 720p. It comes out as that new higher res signal, but it can't create more detail that what the original contained. It's just a trick, and it's generally better done on a DVD player than in the TV.

It does help things look cleaner and less jagged since you can notice such things more easily on a huge HDTV. But understand, no upconverting player, no matter how expensive or how advanced the chipset, will give you more detail than a true high def, high bit rate source like a blu ray disc.

Not all 720p HDTV have the same res, as there are three different pixel counts depening on the display tech. They are 1024x768, 1280x720 and 768x1365 (give or take) the pixel count runs from about 750k to about 1 million, that's three to 4 times higher pixel count than regular DVD.

So even though you don't have full HD, you'll still get the benefit of the extra def that blu ray offers. The player can be set to 720p or the TV will down convert a 1080i signal (if you set the player to that) note, not all 720p sets can handle or convert a 1080p signal. Not to worry just set the player to another resolution.

Hope this helps, go out and get a blu ray on black friday! Wal mart will have one for 128 rocks, that is if they have any left.

How do I pick out the best HDMI cables for my new 1080p LCD TV?

JayRust

I'll need 1 to run from my dvr to the tv and I'll be hooking some devices up like a blu-ray player, game consoles, etc. Thank you!

Answer
The donkey above who spent 200 on cables is a fool. Really all you need is a $3 cable from monoprice.com. I have a 46" Samsung LCD 1080p and the picture is crisp and clean. The only reason you would want to spend more is if you are spanning a 25' gap or something of that sort. If you are just getting a 3' or 6' cable, then a $3 one will do just as well as a $40.

Unless you custom ordered it i doubt it came with a blu-ray player. You can pick one up online, in the laptop form factor for about 189.99 to 239.99$ depending on where you shop

What is a good and reliable blu ray player?

timster799

I would like to a recommendation on a good blu ray player. Should I get a standalone player and buy a Playstation 3 because of their reliability. Any recommendations is appreciated. It will be connected to a HDTV 1080p hi def TV.
I meant to say -- should I get a standalone player OR instead a Playstation 3. Thanks.

Answer
As of right now the PS3 is the best choice....WHY?

Well right now the PS3 is one of the most reliable, durable and cheapest blu-ray plaer on the market today. THe PS3 is also the very few blu-ray players that can updates its firmware to the latest profile.

With this $399 price you get a blu-ray player and an ultimate game console which plays high def games, free online gameplay and can even install Yellwo Dog Linux operating system on the PS3 to use as a computer operating system...

So unless some company company comes out with a stand alone blu-ray player less than $200 or $300 the PS3 is your best choice.

I just got a Blu Ray player that is youtube and netflix ready, although my only problem is that the room that I want my player to be in is not near my router, and I'd rather not run a wire through my home. Is there a ethernet to wireless adaptor that i can plug in to the player that will connect to my router?

Answer
Depends on the blu-ray player. You will have to check the manual to make sure that your player is capable of wifi. If it is, it will tell you what wireless adapters it is compatible with.

How can I update my sharp blu ray player without ethernet,or by using wifi?

I have a Sony 40" (KDL-40V4150) and a Sony Blu-Ray disc player connected by HDMI. I have calibrated to my wits end and have found no results. I can clearly tell that my blu-ray discs are not being played in full 1080p unlike my HD cable channels broadcasted by my cable box.

Answer
It MIGHT be the HDMI cable you are using, but I suspect you have set your Blu-ray player to sub-HD resolution (e.g. 480i or 480p). Check what the setting is and make sure it is as high as your TV can accept (1080p). That should solve your problem.

What is all this new math concerning home video?

Dave

I hear that 1080i = 740 p is that true?

So if my tv is a 1080 i and I watch a blu-ray player it is actually playing at 780p?

correct?

Answer
First, if your TV is of the fixed-pixel type (LCD, plasma or DLP) then it is not 1080i--it is either 720p (or 768p or other p) or 1080p. The only TV display that is 1080i is the CRT. Consumer-level CRT sets cannot display 720p--the sweep rate is too high for the CRT. As a result, all fixed-pixel sets will accept 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. Some will accept 1080p as well (that is becoming more common). The only source for 1080p is a blu-ray player. Broadcast TV is either 720p (Fox, ABC) or 1080i (the rest). Standard DVD is 480i or 480p.

Things get even more complicated when you try to figure out which has higher resolution, and which looks better. Specifically, a 1080i picture shows you a 540 x 1920 pixel image every 1/60 of a second. A 720p picture shows you a 720 x 1280 picture every 1/60 second. Which is better? The answer is it depends on the image: If the image is not moving, the 1080i frames will superimpose and you will see the full 1080 x 1920 pixel frame. However, if the image moves between frames, the edges will be only 540 and will not look smooth.

But wait! It gets even more complicated. CRT displays accept and show 1080i, but no consumer-level CRT can actually resolve 1080 lines on the screen! So even in a stationary image, the actual visible resolution is not 1080 lines (more like 800 lines). On the other hand, fixed-pixel displays CAN show all 1080 lines and can offer full resolution.

To go to the next level of confusion, the newer fixed-pixel sets can process the two 540 frames of a 1080i picture to produce a pretty good representation of a full 1080-line frame, even if the image is moving! So the latest set really do come close to meeting the full potential of HDTV at its maximum resolution.

Finally, regardless what the screen can show, the set can not show any more detail than what the input image carries. So if you feed 480i into a 1080p set, the image you look at will be 1080p, but not have any more resolution than the original 480-line picture,

This is probably more detail than you asked for, but it is a way of showing that your question is not a simple one.

Finally, if you have a blu-ray player, and your TV can accept 1080p, set the player for that format. If the TV can only accept 1080i, the set that as the player output. If you set your blu-ray to 720p, see the above paragraph on 480i input for the answer.

What is the difference between upconverted 720p and Blu-Ray 720p?

blu ray player deals

blu ray player deals image

Seth B

Is there enough of a difference between the two to warrant buying a Blu-Ray player to play "true" 720p movies? Or is the difference not as large as between upconverted 1080p and Blu-Ray 1080p?

Answer
This depends a great deal on your specific hardware. BluRay at 720p is actually downconverted from 1080. DVD at 720p is upconverted from 480. Sometimes the conversion process alone introduces undesirable artifacts (esp. in fast motion or scenes with very little contrast or color differences). Generally BluRay, because of it's higher data rate and capture resolution is gonna look better regardless but will be really noticeable if you are projecting or using a large 50" or better TV capable of hi-def resolutions. If you are using a 40" 720p TV, I doubt that you will see a dramatic difference while sitting on the couch.

My Samsung BluRay player will upconvert my DVDs to 720p all day long. My TV is only capable of showing up to 720p and the player will upconvert DVD or downconvert BluRay as necessary (and both look about the same on my 36' 720p TV). Further DVD is not only 480p, many DVDs are 480i, but the player can display them as progressive scan (this is what the "P" stands for) with varying degrees of success

What characteristics does a blu ray player require to play 6.1 surround sound audio?

blu ray player 6 channel
on Sony BDV-IT1000ES 5.1-Channel Blu-ray Disc Player Home Theater System
blu ray player 6 channel image

Dougie

Would this be possible if i use a PS3?

Answer
I think that a player that outputs 7.1 format (which includes the PS3) will actually output 6.1 soundtracks as 7.1 (two channels would be identical). You will also need a home theater system that can decode 7.1 audio from it's HDMI input (some receivers will only pass HDMI audio, not process it). Optical inputs (TOSLINK) can only support lossily compressed 5.1 surround, not 6.1 or 7.1.

Most Blu-ray discs are actually encoded to 7.1 instead of 6.1, but you can filter this list to show 6.1 discs if you want: http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php .

Does anyone know how to make a blu-ray player region free?

Skywriter

I've recently got a Samsung Blu-Ray Player and want to play my other region DVDs on it does anyone know how to make it all regions, the make is a Samsung BD-C5500.

Any help will be great

Answer
This device is sold in Australia as a locked region 4 DVD and region B Blue-ray player. There is no current procedure for unlocking the Blue-ray and it is probably not necessary because over 80% of released disks are region free anyway. (Just don't ever buy the other 20% and they will get the message soon enough!)

To change the DVD from region 4 (Pacific/Australia) to region 9 (region free) follow these steps using the remote control. (Adapted from http://tinyurl.com/2acybpj for Australian conditions).

1. Ensure that there is no disk in the tray.

2. Switch the player off and then back on. This is necessary to clean-boot the firmware.

3. Wait until the main menu page appears and the player stops doing anything.

4. Press the eject button to open the tray. (The button is between the "Power" and "TV Power" buttons at the top of the controller.)

5. Press the eject button to close the tray.

6. Wait while the player searches for a disk.

7. As soon as the "No Disk" message appears at the top left corner do the following.

8. Press the REPEAT button â just above the TV channel selector at the bottom right of the controller.

9. Enter 7 6 8 8 4 on the number pad.

10. The region code "4" should appear at the top left corner of the screen.

11. Enter a "9" to make the player region free. (Enter a region code if you want to lock the player to another region for some obscure or perverse reason.)

12. Power down and power up again.

13. Play a foreign DVD to verify the change.

==========================================================================================================

Now the tricky bits. This process is timing dependent.

Firstly, you must start entering the code just after the "No Disk" message is shown and before the message disappears. If you jump the gun or miss the boat (isn't English great!) it won't work.

Secondly, the REPEAT key is part of the code. All six keys must be entered smoothly as "REPEAT 7 6 8 8 4". The entry gets timed out so you can't stop in the middle and restart. Don't bash away like crazy, just do it smoothly and briskly.

If you don't see the "4" the first time, don't worry. Just repeat the process. It took me about a dozen tries before I got it to work.

I can't guarantee that this player does not have a region change counter so I would be a bit careful about changing regions back and forth. I also can't guarantee that this will work with all released firmware. Samsung seems to take this crazy region bastardry very seriously for some reason.

=======================================================

For people from other parts of the world, all region codes are as follows

1 â 2 9 3 3 4
2 â 5 7 5 3 8
3 â 5 6 7 3 2
4 â 7 6 8 8 4
5 â 5 3 8 1 4
6 â 2 4 4 6 2

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1â6 flags set.
1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories
2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland
3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau
4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania
5 India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia
6 People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, North Korea
7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)
8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.
ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

is this apple macbook pro a good deal?

Spkey

hey guys, basically i want to purchase a mac (my first) and wondered if this deal was good?

It's the 2.54 ghz processor, 4gig ram, 320 gig hard drive core 2 duo model. says its a macbook pro 5.1 and seller said was purchased in late 09. i have knocked his price down from 700 to 600 English pounds, is that worth it for this model?

thanks for any help

Answer
Do you mean relative to other Apple MAC Pro's?
Apple is great operating system, excellent customer service, very good reliability, good weight and dimensions for the size, BUT
Always expensive and weak speed and graphics at the price. Here is a review on it:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Update-Apple-MacBook-Pro-5-1-Unibody-9600M-GT-9400M.12518.0.html
It was 2250 Euro when new. Seems to have a switchable operating system as Vista and Leopard.
Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53 GHz
4096 MB, GDDR3 1066 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT - 512 MB, Core: 500 MHz, Memory: 800 MHz, GDDR3 + GeForce 9400M (G), ForceWare 176.44 (Windows Vista)
Hitachi HTS543232L9SA02, 320GB 5400rpm S-ATA
Sound Realtek ALC885/889A
1 Express Card 34mm, 2 USB 2.0, 1 Firewire, 1 DisplayPort, 1 Kensington Lock, Audio Connections: optical /analogue audio in- and out, Uni-directional Irda for Apple Remote, FireWire 800, iSight (Webcam)
Networking 10/100/1000MBit Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n (abgn), 2.0 + EDR Bluetooth
Matshita DVD-R UJ-868 ATA
height x width x depth (in mm): 24.1 x 364 x 249
Weight 2.49 kg
Battery 50 Wh Lithium-Polymer, 10.8V
Price 2249 Euro
Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
Mac Os X 10.5 Leopard
Alternatives from Amazon:
Lenovo Ideapad Z575 15.6 inch Notebook - Gunmetal Grey (AMD A8-3500M, 8GB, 750GB, Radeon HD 6740G2 2GB, Blu ray, BT, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B006AASDE4/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1324940376&sr=1-18&condition=new
CPU is 64% faster, Twice the DRAM, 2.3 times the HDD, high midrange graphics vs low midrange so is better graphics processor and has 2GB VGRAM vs 0.5GB, and has a bluray player instead of a DVD. Is only 10/100 ethernet and no bluetooth, but does have HDMI and is 2.59kg vs 2.49, but has a 1 year warranty. Overall, a world above a used MAC.
Also, Samsung RC520 15.6 inch notebook (Intel Core i5 2410M 2.3GHz, 6Gb, 750Gb, DVD SuperMulti DL, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) - Black/Silv
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-notebook-SuperMulti-Windows-Premium/dp/B0053GLCDU/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1324940376&sr=1-1
Slightly lower graphics GT 520M compared with the Apple, but EVERY OTHER SPECIFICATION is better than or equal to the Apple, and some substantially better.
Would get the Samsung before the Apple in a heartbeat, and the Lenovo is also much better than the MAC, and there are other new choices.

For a MAC at 600 pounds, it is a good deal. To buy a used MAC with old technology vs a Samsung of the same size and weight and everything better or equal except the graphics processor as slightly worse and Samsung being new, I would not even think about the MAC.

InfraRecorder
is an open source utility that doesn't skimp on features or accessibility. Once installed, you'll notice you can either launch InfraRecorder or InfraExpress. The latter version features a slimmed down interface with wizards for burning data, audio, and video discs. It's sort of InfraRecorder for dummies. The full feature gives you a ton of options that might confuse folks used to using Nero Smart Start.
Here are a few of the things you can do with InfraRecorder:
* Create data, audio, video, and mixed-mode discs
* Record dual-layer DVDs
* Four methods for erasing discs
* Record disc images (ISO and BIN/CUE)
* Scan SCSI/IDE bus for devices and capabilities
* Create disc copies using temporary disc image
* Import session data from multi-session discs and add more sessions
It doesn't look like there's support for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but the product is still under development and new features are being added all the time.

Handbrake
http://handbrake.m0k.org/
Unique but essential
Handbrake enables you to stick a DVD in your DVD drive and have the
contents of that film stored to your hard drive in a form that can be
read by pretty much any media player. I often use it to put a few
movies on my laptop for travel purposes, so I don't have to worry
about keeping track of DVDs while on the road.

Use videos as screen savers
Forget pictures in a screen saver. Use this program to have your
favorite digital videos as your screen saver.
Set the screen saver to play videos as-is, or have them stretched to

spook you if you're elsewhere in your house.

Mix, edit and share videos online
There's no shortage of video-sharing sites nowadays. You can upload
or watch videos on sites like YouTube and Yahoo! Video.
However, most video sites offer little flexibility. To edit or mix
clips, you need your own software.
Jumpcut is a video-sharing site that gives you more control. In fact,
it lets you take over others' videos as well.
As with other sites, you can upload your own clips to Jumpcut. It
provides an online video editor, so you can cut and remix your clips.
You also can upload still photos and arrange a slide show. Jumpcut can
import pictures from Flickr, the popular photo-sharing site.

You can upload videos and photos through the site or via e-mail. In
e-mail, simply include your artwork as an attachment. Jumpcut will
automatically add it to your account.

Jumpcut allows you to remix other members' videos. You can reorder the
scenes or borrow footage for your own videos. The original version
stays intact, so you won't step on anyone's toes. You can restrict
your clips from others if you wish.

Jumpcut is still in beta (testing), so it may have a few kinks. It
recently became part of Yahoo!. That means you can join Jumpcut using
a Yahoo! ID.

Streamlined video editing
The video-editing basics are covered with this product.
You can cut or move scenes around. There is also a good collection of
filters. You can use them to adjust brightness, reduce noise from the
soundtrack or sharpen the picture. It features two windows to show the
"before" and "after" effects of your adjustments.
VirtualDub makes navigation easy with buttons to skip through a video
to find clips. It can even be set to detect scene changes to help you
more quickly jump to different parts of your video. VirtualDub
captures video for editing in the AVI (audio video interleave) format.

I want to use my TV set as a second monitor to play a Blu-ray movie, so I want a player software which can play Blu-ray movie on both PC and TV.

Answer
I assume you have a Blu-ray disk player in your PC or laptop? Without one software won't do you any good. As to outputing Blu-ray video to a TV you need a TV with a compatible input jack. This could be a DVI jack or HDMI (the latter if your PC ha HDMI out). As to software there are a number of choices ... see the link for one list.

How to wirelessly stream a live PC Desktop to a TV?

kingoftown

I have a PC, a Router, and a wireless Blu Ray player attached to my TV and router.

I downloaded software called VLC player, thinking I could use it to stream my desktop to the TV via the Blu Ray player. (I can stream stuff to it similar to a PS3) Its interface is somewhat cryptic, though.

I have no problem streaming media files, but how do I stream a live desktop?

I have an hdtv and my dvd, when connected to a hdmi cable, can have different resolutions including 1080p and 1080i. But I dont really see any difference between both of them. What is wrong? What is the difference? If I buy a blu ray player will the audio and visuals be better?

Answer
Well, 1080i and 1080p are different resolutions, some HDTV's are able to handle 1080p (high-end) resolutions, others are able to handle up-to a 1080i (mid) resolutions, still others are only able to display 720p (low-end) resolutions. The scale is as follows:

1) Best - 1080p - currently the best technology available (found in high-end HDTV's)
2) Middle - 1080i
3) Bottom - 720p

However, the difference between 1080p and 720p is barely noticable to the most trained eye.

To answer your question, you can only receive the resolution your hdtv is compatible with. Example if you have a 1080i HDTV and you buy a blu-ray player that is capable of displaying in 1080p, you will only get the 1080i resolution that your HDTV is compatible with.

And, I have both a 1080p and a 1080i hdtv and I cannot tell the difference.... Hope this helps.

Will I be able to notice the difference on a 24" TV when using a blu ray player?

Ben

I am considering buying a Blu ray player to use on a 24" 1080p TV, my question is will I be able to notice the difference or will it just be a waste of £75?

Answer
Not as simple a question as it sounds.

Quick answer ... Doubtful ... although if you sit close enough (less than 6') and have good eyesight you may see some slight improvement in picture sharpness. You will be getting a bit different colour to DVD too, but without an A/B comparison you probably won't notice.

To provide some data, a study done by Toshiba a few years back showed that about 25% of viewers so NO difference between DVD and Blu-ray of the same movie on identical 40" 1080p HDTVs, and a further ~25% saw slight differences, but not enough to justify the higher cost.

The reality is that Blu-ray CAN be a significant improvement on DVD under the right conditions, but many things can result in it being at best a slight improvement. Some things that bear on the issue: size and resolution of the display, viewing distance, eyesight of the viewer, how the display is connected (HDMI or other), how the DVD is played (good upscaling DVD players CAN give virtually an identical result to Blu-ray under some conditions), quality of the original material and how it was mastered (Some Blu-ray versions of movies are actually poorer than older DVD versions, at least to some viewers).

That all said, Blu-ray players are now relatively cheap, so IF you need a new player (i..e don't have an upscaling DVD player with HDMI output) a Blu-ray player is BOTH an upscaling DVD player and a Blu-ray player. This would be a good choice also if you buy movies and are considering whether to buy Blu-ay of DVD now. On the other hand if you rent movies and have a good DVD player and don't plan to upgrade your TV any time soon don't waste your money.

EDIT: Once again (sigh!) I have to disagree with Grumpy Mac. HD vs SD TV is NOT the same as DVD vs Blu-ray. The former is quite obviously different, while DVD, even on the most basic non-progressive DVD player will still look fairly close to Blu-ray quality on a 24" HDTV.

MARIANA P

I have no clue about blu-ray players, we are about to buy our first one. I read stuff online that sound Chinese to me. This is what I got so far: you can play blu-ray and normal dvds in it. Thats all I understand. What else can I do with my blu-ray player? I read something about storing data. THANKS! I know, I sound very dummy.

Answer
If you want to store data on a Blu-ray disc, you need a Blu-ray burner. As far as what kind of data you can burn to a Blu-ray disc, you can burn anything to the disc. As far as what you can do with a Blu-ray player other than watch Blu-ray and DVD and listen to CD's, that depends on the Blu-ray disc player you get. Some of them connect to the internet and play streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon. Again it depends on the model of your Blu-ray disc player but the main thing you do with it is to watch movies.

Unless you custom ordered it i doubt it came with a blu-ray player. You can pick one up online, in the laptop form factor for about 189.99 to 239.99$ depending on where you shop

External full sized burners, USB interface run about 169.99-200.00$

Your intergrated video card "Intel Graphics Media Accellerator X3100" May also not be fast enough for blu ray playback, Could end up with Chops, lag and tessellation errors since its the bottom o' the bin VGA card.

But it is a dell afterall :P

Can some one recommend me a model which can also play MKV, MOV, AVI, RMVB etc with subtitles support. It should also have the functionality to automatically record TV programs per-selected time , pause live TV etc. Also I should be able to stream contents wirelessly from my desktop PC to TV through this devise.

Please suggest a model or any other player with all such functionality.

Thanks

Answer
The official Egreat site is www.egreatworld.com and the only Authorized India seller is webster999 who is currently selling Egreat players on ebay.in with 1 year warranty.
Egreat makes 2 types of players
1) Sigma chip based (M34A, M31B, M32B, M35A)
2) Realtek chip based ( EG-R1, EG-R2A)
Now all these players will play >99% of the video formats with subtitle support at FULL HD 1080P.
I suggest you dont go for any player with recording function. Such players only give a max output of 720p and they wont even support MKV and M2TS formats.

Here are just a few of the benefits of the EGREAT Players....
*Watch movies and play music files downloaded from Internet download sites at Full HD and 5.1 Surround Sound.

*Download movies, videos and music directly via BITTORRENT & USENET onto the Hard Disk of the player . (No need of keeping the PC running all the while)

*Rip all your DVD's, CD's, and Blu-Ray Disks and store and play them ON YOUR TV

*Store all your HD and SD home movies and digital photos to view them anytime.

*Stream media to or from your PC's, NAS devices, cameras or external storage (HDD, flash, etc.), via Wi-Fi or wired LAN, USB 2.0 or eSATA

*Connect it with your other AV gear compliant with DLNA

*And much more in full High-Definition TRUE 1080P!

Currently webster999 is selling the Latest EG-R2A at a huge discount and with Free 300Mbps Wi-Fi Adapter and Free Toslink Optical Cable. Check out this link...
http://cgi.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110471227018#ht_11998wt_1195

I think you should grab on to this fabulous deal which will suffice all your needs (except the recording function)
I just bought R2A a few days back and i"d also previously bought a M31B from webster999 and I love them both.

Cheers

Blu-ray won! What will you do with your now obsolete HD DVD?

me

What will you do with your HD DVD machine?

And, do you think should be a law to avoid "format wars" that leave thousands of consumers with useless machines (and you can be sure they will get no refund).?

Answer
well i tried to play it smart and waited for the war to settle. You should check ebay and see HD-DVD players going as low as $50!!!!! As for laws, I just don't think a law could work in this situation, because there would be intense disputes between companies who make the formats like Sony and Toshiba. But hey, those with an HD-DVD player, put the player in its box, and sell it as a "like-new" antique on ebay in 30 years.
