Herrminato

If I have movies and TV shows that I downloaded off of iTunes, can I put them on a flash drive or External Hard Drive to plug into my Blu-Ray and play them off of that?

Answer
You would have to put them on an external hard drive that has the playback codecs for Itunes, and that may not even work. Loading it on a Flashsrive will do no good as the the bluray player does not have the capability of playing drmv files. There are several drm and drmv converters out their but they dont all play well as you may get a few minutes converted and that is it. Your best best is, if you have a TV that has RGB monitor inputs (to use as an external computer monitor) is to connect the computer to the TV and play the movies from the hard drive.

How do I transfer my digital copy to my laptop?

...

I just bought Life of Pi on Blu-Ray and I saw that it comes with two discs. The other is labeled as 'dvd plus digital copy'. There is an insert inside the cover with directions on how to transfer it to iTunes, but I can't figure it out. It says that if the dvd starts to play, close the player and click on the 'Transfer Movie' icon. The disc started playing, so I closed the player. The problem is that I can't find the icon. That is what I need. Where is the 'Transfer Movie' icon?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, we just got a new sony blu ray player and I was wondering if and how I can Use my cricket broadband internet to get online on my blu ray so we can get nextflix and such. Im not sure if this is possible so i decided to ask. Thanks in advanced!

Answer
If your player has an Ethernet jack you need to hook it up directly to your router/modem. I doubt it has a true browser, it may have a couple rental sites that yopu can stream from.

Your broadband device requires you to install the software to use it, hence a computer.
I dont think your Blu-Ray is that advanced... yet.

On a sad note Cricket broadband plans vary from 3 to 5 GB monthly and Netflicks will stream until you hit your monthly allotted then BAM, throttled to 10K and you aint streaming nothing. PS Streamed Netflicks is of low quality and NO where near HD. Regardless of what they tell you.

I know this cause I am on it right now....

Does a blu-ray player do what a Smart Tv does?

Kevin

I'm talking about the online capabilities.
I really want to go through the internet on my tv and have some apps just like twitter, youtube, netflix, facebook, etc.
I know a smart tv has lots of apps but they're quite expensive, I need dvd/blu-ray player so I was thinking about saving up money by just getting a blu ray player and a large tv.

So would a blu ray player work the same a smart tv does or is there any differences?

Answer
Some Blu ray players have just as many or even more features as a Smart TV and will work just as good or better than a smart TV depending on what Blu ray player your talking about and what smart TV they are not all the same.....so it depends on the make and the model number; usually a Blu ray player that has lots of features and works well on the Internet will cost you a little more but not as much as a Smart TV...There are also Smart Blu ray players.. A smart Blu ray player usually connotes a Blu ray player that has a built in browser as opposed to just apps and icons....

Blueray streaming of any online video?

A_Show_Me_

I've been looking online for a new BlueRay player that I can use for *any* online streaming video. Each device that I look at lists what they are compatible with... NetFlix, Amazon, HuLu, etc. But I want to use it to stream a TV show from the UK. I get the show fine on my laptop, but would like it on the TV. What should I be looking for in the description so that I know the device will do what I want?

Also, any recommended models for doing this?

Answer
The only way I can think of to do that would be to save the download to your computer then use a DNLA certified blu ray player to find the file on your computer to play it...you also may have to change the format to something the blu ray player can play....like DVI...

What are the reasons to update PowerDVD?

Eric

I use PowerDVD 9 to play blu-ray movies on my PC. Recently it has been saying I should update PowerDVD to take advantage of new blu-ray features, but it is still able to play all of my blu-ray discs. I see the latest version of PowerDVD is version 13, but it is somewhat expensive (about $65 for the Pro version). Since PowerDVD 9 seems to be able to play all of my blu-ray movies, is there any reason to spend the money to update to a new version? It seems odd that I would need to do that, since stand-alone blu-ray players will work for many years to come, and firmware updates for stand-alone players are free..
Phil: VLC does not play blu-ray discs. As far as I've seen, there is no good free blu-ray player software.

Answer
update Power DVD gives you some more feature for great experience of your video, like better sound quality, multiple views screen, add on for video, 3D video and 3D video converter etc. But mostly I have seen these feature are not much useful, and for paying little update is just wasting of money. If you got it in free than update otherwise no need to do if your player is working fine...
Some feature in upgrade version are useless. No need to upgrade.

Answer
Yes, you need a blu-ray player to play 3D disc titles but there are a few more ways to watch 3D movies. I have a LG LW5600 and easily convert 2D to 3D with the magic remote. Press Home button on it and select '3D' on the bottom of the screen. Then you will see three different types of 3D modes you can choose. The split screens are for 3D gaming so click the first one. You can see anything in 3D. And you should take advantage of the smart feature your tv has. LG Smart TVs have Youtube app. You can watch the video clips there in 3D, either. Here is the review video I watched. You will get step-by-step instructions from it.

Q. My Blu-ray player is already connected to my receiver via HDMI. Will it sound better if I connect a digital optical audio cable from the Blu-ray player to the receiver or would I just be wasting money buying it since it's already connected by HDMI?

Answer
Careful here - you should get identical sound with HDMI and optical using Dolby Digital.

However - Dolby Digital is compressed. BluRay disks sometimes have un-compressed tracks called "DTS-Master" and ... another term I cannot remember. These tracks are only available using an HDMI cable.

There are some "emperors new clothes" issues with this:

* Most people do not have highly sensitive music caliber speakers so they can hear the difference between compressed and un-compressed audio tracks

* Hollywood hates to spend money so only a few premier disks have extra attention spent on the un-compressed soundtracks.

Our old tv finally died the other day, 11-12 years old I think, so we got a new one & I'm a bit lost as it seems technology has moved forwards 'just a little' since our last TV!

Basically, I'm wondering if I can get a blu ray player than would have some sort of wifi connection, that would link up with my home router, and allow me to access things the internet via the tv? I'm really just interested in things like bbc iplayer, 4od.

Is this at all possible? If so, is there a some sort of jargon i should look out for? Or a specific model? It would be great if this could be done without breaking the bank of course too.

Thanks for your advise!

Answer
With Blu-Ray DVD players, some of them do have built in Wi-Fi. However the built in Wi-Fi has two purposes.

1) To update firmware and patches for your Blu-Ray DVD player
2) To stream content such as Netflix, Pandora music, Youtube only to your television.

However there is no Blu-Ray DVD player with Wi-Fi that will allow you to browse the internet since there is no internet browser included in the Blu-Ray DVD player.

If you like to purchase one, I would suggest going with Sony brand. One that includes built in Wi-Fi and with Blu-Live 2.0 (to access extra movie content and information about the movie) to your television. It should cost less than $200.00

Which game system should i get?

Noah

Sony PlayStation 3, microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo 3ds, Nintendo Wii. And any good games I should get, I like action, adventure, really anything.

Answer
PS3 of course

I would get the PS3. Not only does it have something for everyone, it also has certain exclusives that are just too good to pass up (Mainly Uncharted series). Here are a few more exclusive games:

1. Heavenly Sword
2. God of War
3. Little Big Planet
4. Resistance
5. KillZone
6. Yakuza
7. Uncharted
8. Infamous
9. Gran Turismo ( Racing Game )

Here are some for the Xbox 360:

1. Halo
2. Gears of War
3. Forza ( Racing Game )

That's about it for Xbox 360 'must-haves'. Every other good Xbox 360 game you can also get for PC. Also, you have to pay for online gaming with the Xbox 360...as if Microsoft wasn't rich enough. You will never have to pay to play with PS3 or Wii.

One more thing...the Xbox 360 still doesn't play Blu-Ray discs, so definitely go for PS3 if you want to watch movies. I can understand how Microsoft was fighting for their disc format, but they locked themselves out from watching movies and shows with high quality because of it. A pitiful decision.

Don't even get me started on the sheer power of the systems. Both systems put out about the same quality in their games, the PS3 is more powerful. Also, who wants to play with giant controller the Xbox 360 sports? Sony gives it's customers style. PS3 also has Lovefilm, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, 4oD, MUBI, Music Unlimited, VidZone, PlayTV and ITV/STV/UTV Player.

Future of Blu-Ray dvds?

blu ray player vs roku
on Hulu Plus Vs Netflix Vs Vudu
blu ray player vs roku image

mike

Is it worth investing in more blu-ray dvds when hard-drive based digital players are launching in the market? Things like Apple TV, DVR, and Roku are in early phases with a few problems, but there cited as the future of movies. Things can change obviously if their current drawbacks (rentals only and internet bandwith issues) aren't improved in the future. How many people are converting from dvds over to these devices?

Answer
It really comes down to what quality level consumers want and to what degree the physical ownership model (i.e. disks) still applies. The "MP3 generation" value convenience over quality and to some yet unknown degree this may also prove to be true for video.

HDTV programming, HD Video on Demand movies and HD download movies are all sufficiently high quality vs Blu-ray for many people (analogous to MP3 vs CD/SACD). Furthermore for many people who prefer the physical disk model the quality of DVD on a good player is all they need/want.

Blu-ray is the best video and audio quality available to consumers, but to fully benefit requires expensive equipment and the willingness to pay a premium price for disks ... something a large proportion of the population are not able or willing to do.

Combine that with an increasing range of "good enough" quality HD alternatives and the result is that Blu-ray will probably never achieve the same 'universal' penetration of the home market that DVD did. At the moment it is still only accounts for about 10-15% of DVD's market, and for many reasons may never achieve more than 30-40% of the home video market..

The bottom line is that Blu-ray is, and will remain, a premium priced alternative to DVD and for an increasing array of slightly lower quality HD alternatives. Blu-ray isn't likely to disappear, or be replaced by something better for years, so whether to buy or not is really a personal choice based on your circumstances and preferences.

Smart TV vs Non Smart TV?

Cesilee

I'm looking at purchasing a new tv. I'm really interested in the LG 55" Class 1080p 120Hz LED TV. Not too sure whether to get the smart one or not. Could I get the non smart tv and just purachase a blu ray smart dvd player? Would I get the same features as a Smart TV? Is there any disadvantages going that route? It's a lot cheaper other than that is there any other pros or cons?!?! What's your opinion/suggestion?

Answer
You can get the same features as a smart TV by adding a smart dvd player to a nonsmart TV. If it
is much cheaper, I think it is wise. The only disadvantage is that you may need two remote controls or to program a universal remote to two different devices.

Frankly I don't give an expletive of your choice about a smart TV. It is an expensive marketing device. They appeal to the technology challenged and may be desirable for space saving If you
want to avoid possible clutter of having dvd players, roku boxes or as I will describe, a computer by the TV . I prefer to have a desktop with a wireless keyboard and mouse sitting right beside an ordinary LED TV and I can get on youtube or hulu or any other site I want through familiar browsers such as IE, chrome, or firefox. Moreover you can install a blu-ray drive into that desktop, and internal
BD Drives are $79.95 or less.

The tech challenged will still need the skills, or someone to help them connect their smart TV or smart
device to the internet, either using eithernet or built in wireless, just as one does with a computer connected to the TV. A smart TV is simply a TV with an internet enabled computer inside of it.

Will there be a difference connecting a Blu-Ray player 720p with component cables vs. HDMI?

agris

I have a projector capable of 720p. I am looking at a Blu-ray player. I have a component cable to connect with, but not a HDMI. I would have to get an HDMI switch to use the Blu-ray with HDMI as my HDMI is already occupied by my HD Directv. Will there be a noticeable difference using the component cable vs. an HDMI cable?

Answer
Some will claim digital is better but the fact is that component can be better than HDMI in some cases. There should be no noticable difference.

At the moment Blu-ray and HD DVD disks do not include the token that would trigger HDCP ... so you don't need to worry about down sampling of the analog HD signal to sub HD levels. You might in a year or so ... but not yet.

However, just try it and if it doesn't work for whatever reason then get an HDMI switcher (or upgrade your A/V receiver to have HDMI switching capability and process the audio through the surround system to take full advantage of HD audio formats).

Answer
Believe it or not the Sony PS 3 is still the buy in blu-ray players. It takes some time to properly setup all the audio video setting in the menu (which makes a big difference in the picture quality) but its a good player. You can set it up for auto-play just insert and starts playing. The only other thing is it uses a bluetooth remote which must be purchased separately.

Can blu-ray players get a firmware update for 3d playback?

206ster

I just found out that the ps3 will be getting a firmware update to allow 3D playback, why not all blu-ray players?

Answer
A player has to be able to support the new dual frame video output, and also have an HDMI 1.4 hardware port in order to be able to be firmware upgradeable to support 3D output. Because of the processing capabilities of the PS3, it will be able to work around the HDMI 1.4 port issue (earlier PS3 models had 1.3 ports), possibly at a reduced resolution though Sony claims the output will be 1080p not 1080i.

Can anyone please tell me if I can connect it directly to a 5.1 channel speaker system ? (that is, with out a separate receiver).

Thank you.

Answer
You need to connect it to an amplifier or amplifier/receiver that handles 5.1 Dolby surround. The bluray player only has a pre-amplifier built in and that only supplies enough signal for the amplifier to use to produce the sound. The player itself cannot drive speakers. You don't need anything really fancy.

Answer
I agree with MTS, the Oppo BDP-80 is an outstanding universal player, it has 7.1 channel outputs so if your receiver won't decode the new HD audio formats, the Oppo will. I don't believe there are any recorders out yet - except for a computer connected drive. As far as a Sirius/XM connection an AV receiver would have those, not a stand alone blu-ray player.

I have an old old (1995) 52 inch big screen that still has great picture quality and do not want to buy a new TV yet. Can I hook up a blu-ray player to it? Is there like a converter for the HDMI cable to analog? Or do Blu-Ray players comes with Standard Definition outputs?

Answer
Yes, you can connect your blu ray disc player to the old analog tv. You should have a component video input on your tv and either a coax cable or rca red and white jack for the audio connection. Use this cable for the best result on video and audio. If you have a surround sound connect the coax cable to the surround sound system for surround sound. Hope this will help you out.

How to get the best sound with RCA cables?

John

My amp only takes analog cable input, and I watch movies with headphones plugged into that amp. Now, what will give me better sound? Running analog directly from the blu ray player to the amp, or running the analog from my hdtv to the amp? Will the hdtv act like a converter, making the hdmi's digital signal into an analog signal? Which of these will give me better results? I'm just a teenager, I'm not a scientist, so I'm lost on this, lol. Thanks

Answer
It ultimately depends on the quality of the digital to analog converter on ether your blu ray player or TV, as both are essentially having to convert a digital signal to analog. My guess is the digital to analog converter in the blu ray player is better, but you could simply try it both ways and see which one sounds better to your ears.

Answer
"Please don't tell me I have to buy a new surround sound system to go with the new Blu-Ray player!"

You already know the answer.

Does the 'system' have a extra optical or coaxial-digital input? If so, you just run either a toslink cable or video cable from the BlueRay player to this input and you have 5.1 surround sound.

If the 'system' has a Left/Right RCA audio inputs (colored red and white), you MIGHT be able to hook up RCA cables from the BlueRay player to these inputs.

But - standard DVD's include ProLogic sound track which work with the Left/Right audio outputs. I dont know if BluRay disks offer a ProLogic track. Check the menu system of the player to see if it will down-convert the sound to ProLogic.

My Blu-ray play has a built in Ethernet port and it comes with Netcast and Netflix unlimited streaming but the thing is my Router is in another room and i have no telephone line in my lounge.

So i need something to bridge the connection since i do not want to run an Ethernet cable all through my house in order to connect it.

What is something i can find at wal-mart that i can get?

Answer
If your router is wireless then you can simply add a bridge which will convert the ethernet port of the bluray player from hardwired to wireless so it can communicate wirelessly to the router.
Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WET54G-Wireless-G-Ethernet-Bridge/dp/B00008WMBT/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1248622375&sr=8-3

What Blu Ray players are compatible with DVDs?

I'm wanting to purchase a Blu Ray player, but don't want to get rid of my DVDs. Is there a player that can play both formats?

Answer
All of them will.

And most of them will do the up-conversion in the player if you hook up with HDMI cables. This tends to give you a slightly better picture than if you let the HDTV do the conversion.

My advice: Go to www.bestblueraydeals.com for discounted prices from Amazon merchants.

Get your HDMI cables by searching Amazon for "Media Bridge". These run $9-$20 each

Now - there are some options with BluRay:

* Basic players
* Players with optional $90 dongles to make them wireless
* Players with wireless and apps like Netflix/Hulu
* Players that support 3D

My Panasonic has 8 apps (Netflix, etc.)

For $99 I bought a Western Digital TV Live box that has 28 apps and lets me plug in a flash drive or USB hard drive and can play most computer video files.

I suggest you get a basic BluRay player and not spend the extra for Wireless or Apps. Buy one of the dedicated "Media Servers" like the WD unit, Roku, etc. for your streaming needs. The Media Servers tend to have more options, get updated more frequently and ... let you play computer files.

Some BluRay players do have a USB jack and claim to play computer video files - but they only play a few file types if they are created in the right resolution and most of the players or televisions will NOT play from a USB hard drive. The little Media Servers do a much better job. (Some people rip their entire DVD library to a USB hard drive - then just use that rather than disks.)

Hope this helps.
