I've been looking for a Surround Sound system that supports Dolby TruHD and DTS HD but the ones I've been seeing has a blu ray player included, which I already have. I'm looking at $700 to spend but would really like one without a Blu Ray player.

What are the best home theater system for a 1080p HDTV and blu-ray DVD player?

T J

I recently purchased a HDTV with 1080p and a blu-ray DVD player (PS3), and wonder what are home theater systems that would provide better outcomes at a reasonable cost (<$500). Do I need to buy a system or a receiver and separate speakers with capacity of 7.1 channel and HDMI 1.3 output?. Any recommendations on particular brand name and model?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Answer
The above answer will give you amazing sound, but that solution takes a lot of time and money. If you want a "quick fix" that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won't match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver.

i have a bunch of movies on my computer and i put them all on my external hard drive and when i tried to plug it into my blu ray it doesnt show up. but when i put a movie on my flash drive it shows up. how can i get my hard drive to show up on my blu ray? and if its not possible is there any storage device for the player? i have a dynex blu ray player and i love it. it does a bunch of apps and the loading time is very fast for blu rays.

Answer
Most televisions and BluRay players cannot work with a USB based hard drive. I suspect it is something about the power requirements but I am not sure.

You probably want a small media server that works with USB HDD's like the Roku or Western Digital Live box. These box's connect directly to your HDTV with HDMI cables.

What is a decent Blu Ray Player to buy?

The Nights

Im looking for my first blu ray player. I would like wifi, but no 3d. Something that has decent loading speed. And I'd Like to keep it fairly cheap without sacrificing quality. Any suggestions?

Answer
Believe it or not the Sony PS 3 is still the buy in blu-ray players. It takes some time to properly setup all the audio video setting in the menu (which makes a big difference in the picture quality) but its a good player. You can set it up for auto-play just insert and starts playing. The only other thing is it uses a bluetooth remote which must be purchased separately.

HDMI cable is the only cable that support the video resolution of 1080P and the 7.1 audio that is on Blu Ray disc movies. Hope this will help you out.

Got a blu-ray player for xmas, the only internet hookup is thru a LAN port on the back. My PC is upstairs, and I don't want to install a network jack. Does anyone know of a product to use that will plug into my blu-ray and pick up my wireless network?

Answer
I would really recommend that you run an Ethernet cable, most wireless solutions are much slower than wired, and less reliable too. However, if you are adamant on wireless, http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-WL-330gE-Portable-Functions-Universal/dp/B0014L4ZKK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293470551&sr=8-1

Is it possible to transfer a Blu ray drive from a Blu ray player into my Computer?

Joey D

I have a Blu ray player that isn't being used because I'd rather play things from my PC. I was wondering if it is possible to open up my blu ray player and take the blu ray disk drive out and put into the open SATA spot I have on my motherboard.

Answer
If the Blu Ray's Drive architecture is SATA and the connecting Power jack also SATA then theoretically it's possible but either of those connections is incompatible then-- No.

Keep in mind the the amount of power required for a "stand alone" player might be a different voltage. So either you won't have enough juice to run the device or it might cause a power surge and kill your motherboard.

It may also be possible to connect via USB if adapters are available for that purpose. Research it before making any physical attempts. I applaud you for thinking outside of the box.

Good Luck.

24 fps. vs. 60 fps. on Blu-ray?

blu ray player 60fps
 on LG BD550 Blu-Ray Player for $158.55
blu ray player 60fps image

Dude12

Let me first state that my TVâs resolution is 1366x768. I notice on my Blu-ray player, there is an option to have movies play at 24fps. Itâs set to 60fps, by default. Iâve read everywhere on several sites that if your TV is capable of accepting 24fps, I should use that feature as it will give better results. Well, on my TV, it seems to be the opposite. If I set it to 24fps, my TV accepts it, but I notice that thereâs a little more noticeable motion blur present, not to mention that the input lag is slightly longer. On 60fps, there is less motion blur and the input lag isnât as bad.

Why exactly am I not getting the best results from 24fps? What exactly is the difference picture-wise between watching a Blu-ray movie in 24fps vs. 60fps?
My TV's refresh rate is supposedly 60hz, but when I press the INFO button on the remote when watching a Blu-ray movie, it says 24hz. Not sure if that means it's displaying the 24hz natively.

Answer
There are TVs that can natively playback at multiples of 24 Hz. In that case they don't need to interpolate movie frames.

Your TV most probably accepts 24 Hz, but still interpolates frames to display at 60 Hz, which does not help you (instead of the interpolation being done by the player, it is done by the TV).

So, I suggest you go back to 60 Hz on the BD player.

what's the difference between a 1080i tv and a 1080p?

deb1033

i am buying a new TV and i want to know which one is better

Answer
(DEEEEEP BREATH)

There has been a lot of concern and confusion over the difference between 1080i and 1080p. This stems from the inability of many TVs to accept 1080p. To make matters worse, the help lines at many of the TV manufacturers (that means you, Sony), are telling people that their newly-bought 1080p displays are really 1080i. They are idiots, so let me say this in big bold print, as far as movies are concerned THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1080i AND 1080p. See, I did it in caps too, so it must be true. Let me explain (if your eyes glaze over, the short version is at the end).
For clarification, let me start by saying that there are essentially no 1080i TVs anymore. Unless you bought a CRT based TV, every modern TV is progressive scan (as in LCD, Plasma, LCOS, DLP). They are incapable of displaying a 1080i signal as 1080i. So what weâre talking about here mostly applies to people with 1080p native displays.

Movies and almost all TV shows are shot at 24 frames-per-second (either on film or on 24fps HD cameras). All TVs have a refresh rate of 60Hz. What this means is that the screen refreshes 60 times a second. In order to display something that is 24fps on something that is essentially 60fps, you need to make up, or create new frames. This is done using a method called 3:2 pulldown (or more accurately 2:3 pulldown). The first frame of film is doubled, the second frame of film is tripled, the third frame of film is doubled and so on, creating a 2,3,2,3,2,3,2 sequence. It basically looks like this: 1a,1b,2a,2b,2c,3a,3b,4a⦠Each number is the original film frame. This lovely piece of math allows the 24fps film to be converted to be displayed on 60Hz products (nearly every TV in the US, ever).

This can be done in a number of places. With DVDs, it was all done in the player. With HD DVD, it is done in the player to output 1080i. With Blu-ray, there are a few options. The first player, the Samsung, added the 3:2 to the signal, interlaced it, and then output that (1080i) or de-interlaced the same signal and output that (1080p). In this case, the only difference between 1080i and 1080p is where the de-interlacing is done. If you send 1080i, the TV de-interlaces it to 1080p. If you send your TV the 1080p signal, the player is de-interlacing the signal. As long as your TV is de-interlacing the 1080i correctly, then there is no difference. Check out this article for more info on that.

The next Blu-ray players (from Pioneer and the like) will have an additional option. They will be able to output the 1080p/24 from the disc directly. At first you may think that if your TV doesn't accept 1080p, you'll miss out on being able to see the "unmolested" 1080p/24 from the disc. Well even if your TV could accept the 1080p/24, your TV would still have to add the 3:2 pulldown itself (the TV is still 60Hz). So you're not seeing the 1080p/24 regardless.

The only exception to that rule is if you can change the refresh on the TV. Pioneer's plasmas can be set to refresh at 72 Hz. These will take the 1080p/24, and do a simple 3:3 pull down (repeating each frame 3 times).

Short Version
What this all means is this:

⢠When it comes to movies (as in HD DVD and Blu-ray) there will be no visible difference between the 1080i signal and the 1080p signal, as long as your TV correctly de-interlaces 1080i. So even if you could input 1080p, you wouldn't see a difference (because there is none).

⢠There is no additional or new information in a 1080p signal from movie based content.

⢠The only time you would see a difference is if you have native 1080p/60 content, which at this point would only come from a PC and maybe the PS3. 1080p/60 does have more information than 1080i/30, but unless you're a gamer you will probably never see native 1080p/60 content. It is incredibly unlikely that they will ever broadcast 1080p (too much bandwidth) or that 1080p/60 content will show up on discs (too much storage space and no one is using it to record/film).

So all of you people who bought 1080p displays only to be told by the companies that you had bought 1080i TVs, relax. The TV will convert everything to 1080p. Now if you bought a TV that doesn't de-interlace 1080i correctly, well, that's a whole other story.

Edwin

My cousin was arguing with me yesterday about the same, he said itâs mandatory to connect a blu-ray player to your tv to have access to smart applications. My question is, if it is true then what is the worth of buying such an expensive TV? Why don't we just buy a normal LED-LCD TV.

Answer
Its practically the same. If you calculate how much a TV costs with or without the smart TV function, its practically the same as the blu-ray / smart converter. The main difference besides price is that when you use blu-ray/smart converters, its not relying on the processor of the TV. So if the TV has a dual core chip? (LG LM8600/LM9600 , Panasonic VT50) it will run way faster than running a bluray smart interface on a TV that doesnt have a preexisting smart platform. I'd recommend just getting a smart TV instead of getting a bunch of different fancy accessories/upgrades that may damage the TV in the long run.

I personally would steer clear of Sony because they constantly want you to upgrade your firmware. I did this with my PS3 and am having the same cinavia problem. Your best bet of course is to find one made pre-Feb 2012, but close enough before the date so it doesn't ask you for a firmware update. Unless you are rich and can afford the Oppo, they are the only ones pretty much guaranteed to never have a problem. Hope this helped some.

Blu ray or a upscaling player? Is blu ray disc player worth it to buy?

elle

I just bought a LCD 1080i. I"m debating on just buying upscaling or blu ray disc player. Can Blu ray play regular DVDs and play on 1080i format? Or should I just save money and by a upscaling player that plays regular DVDs. How is the output on the upscaling player?

Answer
Not an easy question to answer.

First, you will have to decide based on YOUR priorities ... but let me offer some things to consider.

- Blu-ray is, and will likely remain, a niche premium format for people who can benefit and are willing to pay the premium price (~$300+ for the player and $5-$20 more for disks of the same movie vs DVD).

- Opinion of Blu-ray can vary from "wow!" to "what's all the fuss about" ... depending on how it is being displayed.

- To FULLY benefit you need a 40" or larger 1080p HDTV, with a good surround sound system capable of handling the advanced audio formats.

- You will still get some benefit from Blu-ray with a 720p HDTV (what you have), but you don't mention screen size, where you intend to watch from and whether you have a good sound system ... all of which influence the benefit/cost equation.

- Many Blu-ray films are poorly mastered and don't look much better than DVD even under optimum conditions.

- An upconverting DVD player won't make a DVD look as good as a Blu-ray disk, but on a 720p HDTV under about 40" detail will look fairly close. But picture quality is subjective -- and dependent on more than just resolution -- so you really have to see it for yourself and decide if Blu-Ray is worthwhile. Why not view a DVD and a Blu-ray disk on a HDTV similar to yours and see for yourself?

Personally I can say that I have a 720p projector and a 110" screen, and I tried HD DVD disks (which give essentially identical picture and audio quality to Blu-ray) and found insignificant improvement over upscaled DVDs. Since then I have bought 2 HD DVD tiltes (Planet eart and Sunrise Earth) and over 50 DVDs. I use my HD DVD player as an upscaling DVD player ... and pay about $20 less for movies than if I bought Blu-ray. So I guess I'm biased ... but upconverted DVD look just fine with me.

I should caution that not everyone sees the same thing (which is why I recommended seeing for yourself).

If you do consider an upconverting players note they are only as good as the video processing chip they use ... so avoid the under $60 models. The best are Oppo's models but they are a bit pricy.

BTW, if you do decide an upconverting DVD player is enough the liquidation prices (~$75) in effect on the Toshiba HD-A3 or Venture HD-7000 (Wal-Mart's brand) HD DVD player make them a very attractive option (and as a bonus you can play any of the 400 HD DVD movies available (Noting there will be very few new ones after this month)). But you will have to move fairly fast .. a lot of people have realized the same thing and they are getting snapped up fast.

Finally, if you decide on Blu-ray, other than the PS3, you should wait until near the end of the year to get a Profile 2.0 (BD-Live!) player, and for prices to come down a bit.

Hope that helps.

I am looking for a nice, portable, slim laptop or netbook with windows 8. The main features I want is good battery life, portable and would be able to have an external Blu Ray player to it. I will use it as a computer for school and a way to watch my blu rays anywhere. What would be the best laptop for that?

Answer
If you are looking to buy a laptop mainly for school, then I would suggest Acer Aspire V3-571G

It got
3rd Generation Intel Core i5 Processor
1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT630M dedicated graphics
15.6 inch LED-backlit widescreen display
4GB DDR3 Memory
500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Windows 8
USB 3.0 Port and 1 HDMI Port

The best feature of this laptop is that it got 3rd gen core i5 laptop with 1 GB DDR3 graphics which will be very helpful for running any software or any latest game without lag, plus it got 2 usb 2.0 ports, usb 3.0 port and hdmi port. And the best part you can buy this for just $529.

OR if you want a cheaper option then go for Acer V3 which got AMD A8 quadcore processor, 512MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics for just $439.

How do I watch Blu-ray movies on Windows 7?

I recently purchased a brand new MSI A6300 notebook. It comes with a blu-ray player and Windows 7. I have tried to use Intervideo WinDVD 8. But unfortunately, it does not play any BD discs. Supposedly Corel does not support this version of the software anymore.

Are there any alternative programs I can download for free to watch Bluray movies on Windows 7?

Answer
If it has a built in Blue Ray CD/DVD drive you do not need any additional software than what is installed on the laptop. Read the user guide/manual for the laptop section on using the optical drive.

Thanks.

Answer
I agree with MTS, the Oppo BDP-80 is an outstanding universal player, it has 7.1 channel outputs so if your receiver won't decode the new HD audio formats, the Oppo will. I don't believe there are any recorders out yet - except for a computer connected drive. As far as a Sirius/XM connection an AV receiver would have those, not a stand alone blu-ray player.

Is it possible to connect my blu ray player directly to 5.1 channel speakers?

I am confused. I have a Philips blu ray player with the following audio outputs: Analog audio Left/Right out, HDMI output, Component Video output, Digital coaxial out, Ethernet, Analog audio 5.1 channel out. Can anyone please tell me if I can connect it directly to a 5.1 channel speaker system ? (that is, with out a separate receiver).

Thank you.

Answer
You need to connect it to an amplifier or amplifier/receiver that handles 5.1 Dolby surround. The bluray player only has a pre-amplifier built in and that only supplies enough signal for the amplifier to use to produce the sound. The player itself cannot drive speakers. You don't need anything really fancy.

What kind of laptop should i get?

blu ray player macbook pro
on Play Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray ISO file, BDMV folder on 13
blu ray player macbook pro image

Kelsey

I really like the Macbook pro, but they are really expensive. i dont really know that much about laptops or notebooks, but i would want it to be fast, have a built-in web cam, good sound quality, a nice, big screen, and maybe a blu-ray player. if you find any that match most of these things, could you post the weblink in your answer and how much it is? thanks so much!

Answer
You don't need a Pro. Apple lowered the MacBook to $999.00. Here's why you should get a Mac:: There are NO CONS. The MacBook does both WinBloze and OSX, no other computer can make that statement. You have the best of the best. Apple Stores are popping up all over and you can make an appointment for a time and date, bring your computer there. They will troubleshoot it and fix it if it's a software problem it's FREE. What other computer company has stores and can make that statement? Get the 2.4 GHz with 4Gigs Ram and you got a speed machine like mine. The WinBloze people may not like a Mac computer but I'll bet they all have iPods. Go Mac and Never Go Back. Mac, the User Friendly Computer.
If you read the questions here you will notice that most problems are about every computer except a Mac.

Is there a way to play Blu-Ray discs on my MacBook Pro?

Q. I just got The Social Network (IMO one of the best movies ever, JS) and it's Blu-Ray and the only way I know of is playing it on my Blu-Ray player but I want to play it on my MacBook Pro. I tried it earlier but it rejected the disk... can I download some sort of (SAFE, NON-VIRUS GIVING) software to play it?

Answer
Nope. Blu-Ray discs may look similar to DVDs but they are different at the microscopic level. No regular DVD player can play them, even if there was software to do that.

Plus, no Apple products have Blu-Ray drives, only DVD drives.

Does the CD/DVD rom say "blu ray" on it with a little logo?

"Intel Celeron M 550 (2.00GHz, 1MB Cache, 533MHz FSB)

Dell Wireless 1390 (802.11b/g 54 Mbps)

Media card 8 in 1 card reader

Input and Output Ports: 4 USB 2.0, HDMI, VGA, IEEE 1394a, RJ11,
RJ45, 2 headphone, 1 microphone, 1 ExpressCard 54mm slot, 3 mini-
card slots, consumer IR, S-Video

6-cell Lithium Ion Battery

Unless you custom ordered it i doubt it came with a blu-ray player. You can pick one up online, in the laptop form factor for about 189.99 to 239.99$ depending on where you shop

External full sized burners, USB interface run about 169.99-200.00$

Your intergrated video card "Intel Graphics Media Accellerator X3100" May also not be fast enough for blu ray playback, Could end up with Chops, lag and tessellation errors since its the bottom o' the bin VGA card.

But it is a dell afterall :P

can i move my wifi blu ray from room to room to watch netflix?

bully

I want to be able to move my wifi blu ray player from room to room to watch netflix without having to reprogram each time. is that possible?

Answer
It depends on what model number you have and how much internal memory it has but with most quality blu ray players you should be able to do that as long as the unit is not left unplugged for an extended period of time...If you did that a lot though there may come a time where you trip the internal reset function and you would have to reprogram the player occasionally...if your player does not have enough internal memory it may not be able to remember anything once you unplug it....

How do I steam live hd tv from the internet to a blue ray player with built in wifi?

jdking51

I would like to steam live tv from network tv and local tv. How can I get the shows from my computer streaming into a Blue Ray player with built in wifi?

Answer
This doesn't even make sense.
A Blu-Ray player PLAYS blu-rays...it doesn't record them,
You can stream the shows off your computer to a display like a monitor or a TV.
If you want to RECORD the HD streams onto Blu_ray then you need a Blu-Ray
recorder and recordable media.

If my blu ray player has upconversion does my receiver need it also?

blu ray player receiver
on ... about Sony STR DH820 7.2 Receiver / Sony BDP-S380 Blu Ray Player

I recently purchased a Samsung Blu-ray player that has upconversion. I am wanting to upgrade my receiver with one that has hdmi ports. The receiver I am looking at is a Sony that apparently does not have and I quote "no upconversion of standard definition content". I'm assuming if my blu ray player has it my receiver does not need to have it. Is that accurate?

Answer
If your bluray has it, the receiver doesn't need it.The receiver is just "passing" the signal to the tv. "no upconversion of standard definition content" just means that the receiver doesn't do the upconverting, it would have to be from another source, which would be your blu ray player.

You need a Blu-ray Drive to play BD movies.
If it had a BD drive it should come with a BD player.

How do you update firmware on a blu ray player?

Sally Cat

My blu ray player no longer plays blu rays. It only plays DVD's. Two people suggested I update the firmware, but how on earth do you do that? I am clueless. I never had to do anything like that when I had a DVD player, so this is new to me.

It is a Samsung blu ray player, if that makes a difference.

Answer
Go to the Samsung website & do a search for the model of your unit. Check your unit to make sure it has an SD card slot or USB port. If it does, then do the next step....

At the Samsung website, look for firmware updates for your model and download it to your computer.
(I usually download it to my desktop so that I can find it easier when I transfer the file)

When the download is complete, insert an SD card or a flash drive into your computer and transfer the file. NOTE - the flash drive or SD card must be blank before you transfer the file.

When the transfer is complete, plug it into your blu-ray player, then turn it on. The update should take happen automatically. When it's done, you can shut off the blu ray player, remove the SD card or flash drive, then restart your player.

The Samsung website probably has these instructions too. (www.samsung.com)

Hope this helps.

How to connect my Sony Blu-Ray player to the internet?

Amanda S

I want to hook my Sony Blu-Ray player up to the internet so I can watch Netflix on my TV. I have looked up how to do that, but all of the videos and websites say to choose the option of a built-in wireless connection. When I go into the Network Settings and click on Internet Settings, the only connection option that comes up in wired. How can I fix this and set up a wireless connection?

Answer
If your Blu-Ray player doesn't have onboard wireless capability, you must go with the wired. Netflix won't mind.
