How to Put a Digital Copy of The Incredible Hulk onto Zune?

moff_therd

Hey, I am having some trouble putting the digital copy that came with my Blu-ray version of the Incredible Hulk onto my Zune. I put it on my computer as the windows media player version, but my Zune tells me that the copy is protected. Is there anyway to get around the protection or do I have to give up?

Answer
Sadly, there is no way to put a digital copy on a Zune. I had the exact same problem. I tried a few other movies with the same results, and haven't had any luck finding help online. Until Microsoft allows copyrighted files on the Zune, we are screwed!

How do I change a DVD's region code when I rip and burn? Region-free solutions won't work on my player.?

Mister C

Grandma sent special French cartoons (Rgn 2) that don't come in English. I need to transfer them over to be read on our Blu-Ray player that insists discs have a specified region (specifically Rgn 1)

Answer
I have just found a free dvd ripper called "E.M. Free DVD Copy", it can help you easily rip DVD to many popular formats, such as mp4, 3gp, flv,h264, Xvid, MOV, VOB, Mpeg, Mpeg4, Mpeg TS, AVI, WMV. so you can watch dvd movies on portable players like iPod, iPhone, PSP, Zune, etc. If you want to a DVD ripper, You can try it yourself.

You can download "E.M. Free DVD Copy" from author website or search it by google.

What should i get a Xbox 360 or Ps3?

sony blu ray player $98 image

crazy dude

I was wondering I want to get either the ps3 or the XBox 360 and I want to know which ones better.

Answer
The PS3 is the obvious choice here. In short, it has better reliability, multimedia capabilities, a large list of exclusives and more coming out in 2009 and in the future, it will have over-the-top graphical capabilities (google âHeavy Rainâ). And to those who say the Xbox 360 is cheaper, well then just look at the following list:

With the PS3, you get:
-A Blu-Ray player, which if you wanted one of equal value would blow at least a $700 hole in your wallet, plus a mean DVD-upconverter
-Free online service, the Playstation Network, which is only a few steps behind Xbox Live these days
-An ever-growing list of exclusives, like Resistance 2, LittleBig Planet, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Metal Gear Solid 4 and in the future: inFamous, Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain and Massive Action Game (M.A.G.âin which over 256 players will be able to play on the same map at the same time)
-More flexible in terms of hardware, e.g. swappable HDD, USB mini cable, etc.
-Built in, superior Wi-Fi
-Web browser
-A super sleek system complete with chrome trim and a slot loading disc drive

With the Xbox 360, you get:
-DVD Player/upconverter
-Xbox live, which is $60/year, and not even worth it
-Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 (thatâs a lot of exclusives compared to the PS3, if you ask me: P)
-Ummâ¦canât really say anything about non-proprietaryness, because Microsoft inflates the prices for their accessories.
-A 1 in 3 failure rate (it's not "if", it's "when")
-Many people are on their 5th or 6th 360's already because of RROD, and my friend is on his 11th!

So hereâs a quick run-down of what you must buy with the PS3 and 360:

PS3:
Console $400
Game $60
Controller $55
Charger $2-10--any USB mini cable will do
Total: $517

Really, if you bought all the things the PS3 offers SEPERATELY, you would be able to buy roughly 3 PS3's with that money.

Xbox 360:
Console $300
Game $60
Controller $60
Play and Charge kit x2 $60
Xbox Live $60
Wi-Fi $100
Total: $640

Thatâs not cheaper, so get a grip on it! Sony said that they made the PS3 to last a decade. The multi-platform games are using about 25% of the PS3's graphical potential. So there's lots of wiggle room in the future for much more brighter, detailed and massive environments.

On the other hand, most multiplatform games are using about 98% of the 360âs potential. And they look about the same. At this rate in 1 year, the PS3 will have outshone the 360 graphic wise. Itâs just that the 8-core Cell Broadband Processor is very complex, and takes developers time to get used to. And they are getting the hang of things. The PS3 has a very good reliability rate: only 0.2% failure rate (note the decimal), while Xbox 360's have a 30% failure rate. So, for every 1000 of both consoles produced, 2 PS3's are defective, whilst about 330 Xbox 360's are defective. The numbers speak for themselves. Many game developers have OPENLY stated that in the near future, and right now, they will use the PS3 as a lead-developing platform, and then they will port the games to the 360.

Also, many Xbox fanboys will say "Sure, LIVE is 60 bucks a year, but you get what you pay for." Isn't this like a Sony fanboy saying "Sure, PS3 is a 100 bucks more, but that is *pretty much* all you pay for?

So in conclusion, the PS3 is betterâyou get the most bang for your buck, and it's an incredibly advanced all-in-one home media center hub. You can even install Linux or Windows XP and use it as a computer-legally! While with the Xbox 360, Microsoft will ban your 360 from certain things, if you install the OS at all (just try to bypass the security).

Hope this helps!

Okay, could tell me what should I get; PS3 or a 360*?

I have the money and everything. Im thinking to buy a PS3 with MGS4, Uncharted, & C of D 5. I have 500$ and I do not care if I spend it all. But im debating because the 360* has better online. What would you choose in the situation?

Answer
NOTE: Skip ahead to the *** if you aren't interested in reading an essay lol and just want to see the comparison of PSN VS LIVE (3rd paragraph from the bottom)

Why you should get a PS3 and NOT a Xbox 360

The *expected* lifetimes of current home video game consoles:

Xbox 360--2005-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it
Wii-2006-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it
Playstation 3-2015 (Sony said they made it to last 10 years, so 2006+10 years=2016, round it down just to be safe), you'll get 7 years out of it.

In short, it has better reliability, multimedia capabilities, a large list of exclusives and more coming out in 2009 and in the future and it has over-the-top graphical capabilities (google âHeavy Rainâ). And to those who say the Xbox 360 is cheaper, well then just look at the following list:

With the PS3, you get:

Noire, Heavy Rain and Massive Action Game (M.A.G.âin which over 256 players will be able to play on the same map at the same time, 128 VS 128)
-More flexible in terms of hardware, e.g. swappable HDD, USB mini cable, etc.
-Built in, superior Wi-Fi
-Web browser
-A super sleek system complete with chrome trim and a slot loading disc drive
-HDMI 1.3, Xbox 360 only has HDMI 1.2 (major difference despite only a 0.1 difference)

With the Xbox 360, you get:
-DVD Player/upconverter
-Xbox live, which is $50/year, and not even worth it
-Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 (thatâs a lot of exclusives compared to the PS3, if you ask me: P)
-Ummâ¦canât really say anything about non-proprietaryness, because Microsoft inflates the prices for their accessories. 120GB for $150? With the PS3, you can upgrade to 500GB for $110!
-A 1 in 3 failure rate (it's not "if", it's "when")
-Many people are on their 5th or 6th 360's already because of RROD, and my friend is on his 12th!

So hereâs a quick run-down of what you must buy with the PS3 and 360:

PS3:

Total: $517 ($2 USB mini cable)

Really, if you bought all the things the PS3 offers SEPERATELY, you would be able to buy roughly 3 PS3's with that money (gaming console+computer+SUPERB Blu Ray player)

Xbox 360:
Console $300
Game $60
Controller $60
Play and Charge kit x2 $60 (for 2 controllers)
Xbox Live $60
Wi-Fi $100
Total: $640

Thatâs not cheaper, so get a grip on it! The multi-platform games are using about 25% of the PS3's graphical potential. So there's lots of wiggle room in the future for much more brighter, detailed and massive environments.

***Xbox Live VS PSN? The only thing you are missing is cross voice chat, which can easily be solved by using a telephone, or even in PSNâs V3.00 update, which we will be seeing soon enough.***

The PS3 has sold 21 million units in 2 years. The Xbox 360 has sold 28 million in 3 years. Plus a 33% failure rate, that means that 9.24 million units are either refurbished ones or replacements. So really, the amount of one-time buyers is about 19 million. So really, the PS3 has sold 21 million in 2 years, while the Xbox 360 has sold 19 in 3 years, and the PS3 has a higher face value ($199.99 vs. $399.99)

So in conclusion, the PS3 is betterâyou get the most bang for your buck, and it's an incredibly advanced all-in-one home media center hub. You can even install Linux or Windows XP and use it as a computerâlegally! At what stage of making to watching a DVD does the 4% increase in 24p to 25p happen?

Jake

Does the 4% increase happen in the DVD player, or the 50Hz TV or does it have to happen at the exporting stage? Nowhere seems to say, other than that the 4% increase does happen.

Also, how do PAL 50Hz TV's play 24p Blu-ray footage? Because surely if the TV could show 24p footage, DVD's would be shown in 24p?

Answer
Rich, the asker is asking about 24 frames a second. (A separate issue from resolution).

Basically each frame is repeated twice, with the odd one being repeated thrice.

50Hz is also a UK thing.

Can i play a region 2 blu ray dvd on my region 1?

Ben Sarras

I want to buy a dvd that isn't realesd in the us until next year. But i can buy it from the uk.
How to i make my blu ray player except a UK DVD?

Answer
There is a bigger problem than just gettig the DVD to be acepted by the player if the DVD is designed for a Pal system the Pal pixel count will be odd comparied to NTSC so you can get overscan unless compensated for somehow; also the refresh rate is different 50hz vs 60hz so you may get flicker and the way PAL decodes Color rendition is very different from NTSC so the picture may only be in black and white....

I cleaned it the other day with the lens cleaner, but it is still skipping. Anything else i can do before buying a new dvd/blu ray player?

Answer
Don't bother doing much more than you just did with that old DVD player. I suggest buying a new $40 Sony DVD player at Walmart if you have a standard TV (old non HD tube TV's). Otherwise, if you have a HDTV (high definition TV), you should bite the bullet anyway and upgrade to Blu-ray like you mentioned and get HD picture and sound from Blu-ray discs. You can get good Blu-ray disc players for around $130 at Walmart.

why does my brand new blu ray disc skip while playing?

frankasaa

I got a brand new Blu ray inception as a gift, but when i played it on my lg bd player, also fairly new, it skips a few scenes when it reaches a certain point (ive experienced this twice, at different parts of the movie). this is the first time the player acted this way since i got it. Any ideas what the problem could be? The disc seems to look clean from scratches (it is brand new!)

Answer
Hook up your blu ray player to the internet and check for a software update. Most of the time it is out of date even if you bought it yesterday it may have been made a few months ago. Make sure there is no fingerprints on the disc as this will affect it also and if all else fails after unplug the player for ten minutes. good luck

If not, what are the typical codecs that Blu-Ray players can decode when it comes to .AVI files?

AVI is a container that supports multiple codecs (DV, MPEG-4, xvid, divx, etc.)

No, Divx playback support is NOT a given.

I'm looking for Blu-Ray player with BD Live and a connection for Sirius or XM. I really like to get one that is a recorder IF it's worth it. I am also looking for one that can upscale DVD's running a 5.1 channel digital or analog outputs.

Thanks.

Answer
I agree with MTS, the Oppo BDP-80 is an outstanding universal player, it has 7.1 channel outputs so if your receiver won't decode the new HD audio formats, the Oppo will. I don't believe there are any recorders out yet - except for a computer connected drive. As far as a Sirius/XM connection an AV receiver would have those, not a stand alone blu-ray player.

Is getting a Home Theater Power Center important to have?

tonyc284

I'm planning on upgrading to a 60" plasma TV,Amplifier, and Blu-Ray HD player.I also would be connecting 2 powered speakers with built-in sub-woofers and a DVD/VCR recorder.Would getting one of those 8 outlet power centers that sell at Best Buy,etc. for around 2- 3 hundred dollars make any improvement in the quality of the picture and/or sound? If not then would any multi outlet power strip do?

Answer
I love how people with no empirical data weigh in on a matter specifically your investment.

Here is the low down on most surge protectors. Most use a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) it is placed in parallel to the circuit these have rating of conduction, most in surge protectors are right around 130V give that any UL products need to pass a 30V swing in under over voltage. Problem with this design is that the MOVs need to bias every half-second and are slow response. Plus that the Parallel design means that if the MOV is damaged it no longer will function, BUT the strip will still provide power! YOU WILL NOT KNOW WHEN IT IS DAMAGED.

Monster uses a modified transorb set up that is superior in the response time, it does not need to bias every half second, and if the protection circuit is somehow damaged the strip will not function. So your equipment is always protected.

I would say that most equipment at best buy would not benefit to a margin most would see, but it there. The primary reason to get one is the absolute dirty and transient filled power that for some reasons most companyâs feel is necessary. Given too that most consumer devices are marketed at such a price point most will dispose rather than fix means the manufactures cut corners and design more marginal circuitry every day, and it only gets worse.

I would recommend getting one that provides a good joule rating (watts per second, joules, should exceed a 10 to 1 ratio of nominal current draw) a system you describe should be about 3000 joules peak of protection.

BTW belkin and others use a "protection light" but the circuit is still parallel and all MOVs must be faulty to show an issue. So the protection will degrade over time.

Contact with me with any father questions.

EDIT: Below is the model I would recommend for your use. I would add that any model you want to get should have a lifetime product warranty and a connected equipment warranty.

I just bought a samsung c6500 blu ray home theater set up, primary because its suppose to stream MLB.TV I was able to link to Pandora and Picassa, but when I try to link to MLB.TV, all it does is give me a spinning connect wheel and never actually connects.
MLB.TV email support said "maybe you need to wait until the season starts." I requested that maybe somebody from MLB would actually know this, I got no response. So much for customer support.

SO...anybody own a smart Samsung player and successfully link to MLB.TV? Do I need to wait for opening day? Should I return this unit?

Answer
I can't help you but I am having the same problem with an LG blue ray player. I bought it for MLB TV but there is no MLB TV application. It seems MLB is the troublemaker here, promising what they can't deliver, rather than a blu ray problem.

Which Samsung Blu-ray player should I buy?

Q. I've been reading reviews and pretty much every Blu-ray player short of OPPO has negative reviews. I don't like LG or Sony's blu-ray interface so I decided on Samsung.

I can't decide between the following Samsung player:

BD-D5700

Answer
The Samsung BD-D6700 sports dual HDMI outputs, built-in Wi-Fi, and one of the most extensive suites of streaming video services in comparable Blu-ray players this year, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, MLB.TV, Vudu and CinemaNow. Its 1GB of onboard memory is also more than you get in most of the competition.

Quality difference between playing a regular DVD on Blu Ray player vs. a Blu Ray DVD on Blu Ray player?

blu ray player vertical image

Becky

I know Blu Ray players can upconvert regular DVDs, so is there any major difference in picture between a regular DVD or Blu Ray DVD when both are played on a Blu Ray player?

Answer
A regular DVD on an upconverting 1080p DVD player won't match the resolution of a true Blu-Ray Disc on a Blu-Ray player. On the other hand, a Blu-Ray player won't give better resolution than an unpconverting DVD player in upconversion of a regular DVD.

In my opinion, and from my experience, it would be like comparing a 1080i (1280 x 1080 = 1,382,400 pixels) resolution to a 1080p (1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600) resolution. Therefore, an interlaced format is nearly half the resolution (i.e. every other vertical line is "interlaced" or blended as opposed to "progessive" which is where you get every line).

Bottom line, compare for your self by experimenting between the different choices available on the video market and you decide whether the difference justifies upgrading your system or not.

Happy viewing!

Who watched the Leafs vs Habs game in 3D?

RoonilWazl

It was the first ever hockey game in 3D so I was just wondering how it was. Same as normal television? Or something so good that people should buy 3D TV's now?

BQ: Should hockey be in 3D at all?

Answer
I watched that game in 3D. My TV was manufactured in 2007 and is 3D ready. Before they stopped making them - I bought a Samsung 56" DLP rear projection TV in 2008, so I had a 3D ready TV for 2 years before getting any 3D content.

Eventually, I believe all newer TVs will all be 3D ready. And all 3D TVs double as great 2D sets.

The game in 3D was different than traditional 2D. In 2D your eyes never change focus. It's like looking at a painting. Your eyes move across the surface, but your focus is constant. In 3D you're focusing changes. Focusing on things close to you, focusing on things in the distant. When the puck goes in the air, you can judge where it's going to land - near or far. In 3D you really notice how the players appear vertical to the ice surface. Crowd shots were really good and they did show the crowd more than normal, which I wished they'd do in all their broadcasts. Game score graphics appeared to be on the TV screen surface, while the game itself appeared further back, inside the TV. In 3D, you're more aware of the surroundings. It's very much like being there, looking through a window, rather than staring at a moving picture. They showed more shots from ice level behind the glass and kept on them longer than what we're accustomed to in 2D broadcasts. I enjoyed it and really felt part of a live 3D experiment.

The 3D glasses the televisions use are active shutter glasses and as you may have noticed, the lenses are slightly tinted. That does effect the brightness a bit, but doesn't ruin the effect.

Should hockey be in 3D at all? 3D viewing even on a 3D ready TV will always be a choice. I've always been interested in 3D images, so I love it. Is 3D better than 2D? I really wouldn't say it's better. It's just deeper (pun intended). I'm sure other sports will look even better in 3D. The fact that hockey's ice surface is enclosed by boards and glass, limit the camera options in getting an unobstructed view. I'm not a football or basketball fan, but I can see how those sports would really shine in 3D, because the playing field is open.

Something so good that people should buy 3D TVs now? Depends on the individual. Right now, you can get more 3D content on blu ray than what is broadcast on TV (for me anyway). The majority of my viewing is 2D HD. But being 3D ready for those movies or occasional special events on TV right now is a nice option.

What kind of laptop should i get?

Kelsey

I really like the Macbook pro, but they are really expensive. i dont really know that much about laptops or notebooks, but i would want it to be fast, have a built-in web cam, good sound quality, a nice, big screen, and maybe a blu-ray player. if you find any that match most of these things, could you post the weblink in your answer and how much it is? thanks so much!

Answer
You don't need a Pro. Apple lowered the MacBook to $999.00. Here's why you should get a Mac:: There are NO CONS. The MacBook does both WinBloze and OSX, no other computer can make that statement. You have the best of the best. Apple Stores are popping up all over and you can make an appointment for a time and date, bring your computer there. They will troubleshoot it and fix it if it's a software problem it's FREE. What other computer company has stores and can make that statement? Get the 2.4 GHz with 4Gigs Ram and you got a speed machine like mine. The WinBloze people may not like a Mac computer but I'll bet they all have iPods. Go Mac and Never Go Back. I have a sony blu ray dvd player and want to add a surround sound but dont want to buy another dvd player HOW?

CLEARXRAY

Got a SONY BDP-S350 blu ray player and want to get a surround sound system, but i don't need another DVD player, whats the best way to get around the problem.

Answer
You do it the right way--buy an a/v receiver and a 5.1 (or 7.1) surround sound speaker set. Because your Sony doesn't decode DTS-HD MA audio, you'll want to buy a receiver that can. I recommend the Onkyo TX-SR606 because it's good to go with all audio formats. It also has 4 HDMI-in ports (switch, not pass through). It's about $350. There are a lot of options when it comes to speakers. If you're on a tight budget I recommend the Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 speaker set. I have it and will attest that for $200 you can do no better.

Another option is to buy a receiver-based (rather than player-based) bundled home theater system. In my opinion the best value receiver-based systems are made by Onkyo. Check out the HT-6100. It's based on the TX-SR606, so you have HD audio capability. It's a competively priced 7.1 system.

What is the best Blu-Ray player for Netflix?

wiggum82

We recently bought a Sony Blu-Ray player (BDP-BX57) and the Netflix interface is horrible. All it has is instant que, which means you have to go to your computer to add movies to watch. There is no search option. Is it this way with every Blu-Ray player? I want a Blu-Ray player where you can use Netflix and search for movies, similar to the Wii. I also want it to be easy enough for my kids to use. What is the best Blu-Ray player for Netflix?

Thomas

Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray player with an optical output, and also supports apps such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, HBO go ? Not worried about price, just want some suggestions on whats good.

Thanks!

Answer
Well - I am a bigger fan of the small media servers like the WD TV Live box or Roku rather than a BluRay player. The apps are usually better and you usually get more of them.

Check that the BD player has wireless built in. The dongle to make my Panasonic player wireless was $90 and gave me 8 apps. The WD TV Live box cost $99 and had 24.

Almost everything runs Netflix. I found a list of devices that support Amazon On Demand. I am not sure of HBO go.

Do you need a 3d movie to watch 3d on a smart sharp tv with glasses?

Kendall

My mom just purchased a smart Sharp tv and ive tryed 3d several times on hbo movies and i know tht in 3d images appear closer well in my case nothing. Soon as possible please. Thank you

Answer
You cannot play a standard movie in 3D. You need a 3D specific movie to be able to play it in 3D. You also need a Blu Ray player with 3D capabilities and an HDMI cable that is 3D ready (newer ones usually are).

What features or performance specs do the higher priced Blu Ray DVD players have that the PS3 doesn't?

blu ray player 400 disc image

Sony has recently unveiled a $500 Blu Ray DVD player but the original models released were around $300 to $400 more than the PS3 - which also played Blu Ray discs. What features or performance specs do the Blu Ray DVD players have that justify the higher price compared to the PS3?

Answer
The players themselves aren't really different at all. I've heard the stand along player will load a little faster, although the PS3 loads pretty fast on its own. I own a PS3 and a Toshbia HD-DVD player, and the PS3 runs circles around the Toshiba in terms of load time.

Another benefit of the stand alone players is more outputs, particularly audio-wise. The PS3 has an HDMI output, which is the best output for video and sound. However, a lot of people don't have HDMI hookups on their receivers/TVs so they are forced to use simpler connections. And the PS3 doesn't offer many of these simpler outputs. If you have HDMI, there's no benefit of these stand alones players in this matter. But if you don't have HDMI, you'll get better outputs, at least audio wise from a stand alone player.

Another benefit is that the PS3 is basically a mini computer, and has a fan in it. So do other machines, but some people complain about the fan noise of a PS3. Again, as an owner, I've never had a problem myself. But a stand alone player should run quieter if you think that may be an issue.

The bottom line is that I don't see much difference between the two. I still like the PS3 as it offers the Blu Ray plus much more. I have an HDMI hook-up,so the added outputs don't do anything for me. And I've never had problems with load times or any fan noise. From my perspective there's no real benefit of a stand alone. You may be able to find a better price (although PS3s off ebay are pretty close price wise) or get a better deal (the new Panasonic machine comes with free movies). But performance wise they're pretty much the same.

Here's a good thread discussing your questions, touching on other minor issues:

how does a blu ray player work?

martini

i dont get it, like if i buy a blu ray player and have a blu ray disc then im all set? do you connect the blu ray player to your tv like you would with a dvd player? how come i cant find a blu ray player with surround sound speakers?

Answer
You can connect a Blu Ray player the same way you connect a DVD player using the (usually) supplied A/V cables ( Red, White, Yellow), or for better results, and if your TV has the correct inputs, you can connect using either a Component cable ( Red Green and Blue - be careful as the blue and green look almost alike, make sure you connect the green to green and blue to blue on the TV and the blu ray player, otherwise you will get funky weird color, if at all) For best results, connect using an HDMI cable for both video and audio through your TV.

Wait, your not done yet. Once you have connected to the TV, depending on your TV type, you may have to go into your Blu ray player settings and select the output type. By default, your bluray player is set to output through the AV cables, some will simultaneously send a signal through the HDMI if a HDMI is connected and the player detects it. If you are using Component, cables, you may have to go into the settings and actually change the output mode of your video signal. Again, it depends on your Blu Ray Player, but most can't send a signal simultaneously between the component and HDMI cables.

As for your other question. Most blu ray players are sold as an add on to an existing HT system, there are a few manufactures (Sony, Samsung) that have 5.1 complete package HT Systems that include the subwoofer and the 5 speakers. Panasonic has a 5.1 and a 7.1 (for true HD surround) system at around $400-600 respectively.

What are all of the PROS and CONS for the XBOX 360 and the Ps3?

Answer
XBOX Pros

Better quality online game play
Access to streaming- ESPN in USA and Sky in UK
Windows Media Centre
Higher disc read speed on single layer discs
Backwards compatibility covers more of the games than PS3(slim)

Cons

Lacks the Cell chip which PS3 has, so in long term PS3 is in better position for more advanced games.
Red Ring Of Death
No Blu ray player
Older models don't have built in WiFi
Batteries for wireless controllers

PS3 Pros

Blu ray player
Free online gaming
Fully funtional web browser
No batteries needed for wireless controller
All models have built in WiFi
Larger hardrive

Cons

Online gaming is less reliable than XBOX Live
Updates have to be installed for each new game
Yellow light of death

The following weighs up the technical aspects of both consoles:

CPU
XBOX-3.2GHz Xenon Processor
PS3- 3.2GHz Cell Processor

XBOX-3 dual-threaded cores
PS3- 7 single-threaded cores (plus 1 backup core)

So the CPU chips in both consoles run at the same GHz speed, but the PS3's 7 single-threaded cores beat the XBOX's 3 dual-threaded cores, so if you mearure the performance in gigaflops, the PS3 is nearly 3 times that of the XBOX. In theory, the CPU/GPU chip used in the new XBOX 360 is faster than the individual chips used in older models of the console but to ensure proper funtionality, Microsoft had to install a frontside bus replacement block so the CPU/GPU chip in newer consoles actually runs at the same speed as chips in the older model. This new combined chip in newer XBOX models is slightly better than the chip in a PS3 in terms of reliability and temperature control.

GPU
XBOX-ATI Xenos NVIDIA
PS3 -RSX "Reality Synthesizer"

XBOX-Up to 512 MB GDDR3 RAM (shared w/ system RAM)
PS3 -256 MB GDDR 3RAM (additional 224 MB can be shared w/ system RAM)

XBOX-21.6 GBps bandwidth (256 GBps via eDRAM)
PS3 -22.4 GBps bandwidth

The XBOX Xenos graphics card has more video RAM than PS3 but this video RAM is shared with the consoles system RAM. The PS3 has 256MB of RAM dedicated to video and can also share up to 224MB of RAM from the system RAM if it needs to do so. The PS3 has slightly better bandwidth but the XBOX has the advantage of 10MB of eDRAM which means the XBOX system bandwidth jumps to 256GBps. So, the PS3 show better general performance but the XBOX with its 10MB of eDRAM gives better peak performance.

RAM
XBOX-512 MB GDDR3 RAM (shared with GPU)
PS3 -256 MB XDR RAM

XBOX-700 MHz speed
PS3 -3.2 GHz speed

XBOX-22.4 Gbps bandwidth
PS3 -25.6 Gbps bandwidth

The XBOX total RAM is misleading because system RAM and video RAM are shared. The PS3's XDR RAM is faster and more efficient than XBOX's GDDR3 RAM. The PS3's runs at 3.2GHz compared to XBOX's 700MHz.

Hard Drive
XBOX-250 GB HDD or 4 GB SSD
PS3 -160 or 320 GB HDD

XBOX-5400 rpm
PS3 -5400 rpm

XBOX-User replaceable w/ proprietary HDD
PS3 -User replaceable w/ standard HDD

The HDD units in both consoles are very similar, both run at 5400rpm and have several hundred GB of storage. High end PS3 models have 320 GB HDD compared to XBOX 250 GB. The advantage of the PS3 is its support of standard 2.5" SATA notebook hard drives which means the PS3 hard drive can be upgraded with drives that have higher capacities and rpm speeds but XBOX only supports Microsofts proprietary HDD model.

Disc Drive
XBOX-12x read speed (DVD) 8x read speed (DVD)
PS3 -2x read speed (Blu-ray)

XBOX-7 GB disc space
PS3 -25 GB disc space

The XBOX has higher DVD disc read speed than PS3. If you compare XBOX DVD read speed to PS3 Blu ray disc read speed XBOX maxes out at 15.85 MBps on a single layer disc and the PS3's maximum is 9 MBps. But the XBOX's speed is reduced when reading dual layer discs. The PS3 disc drive runs slower than the XBOX but the PS3 does have higher storage capacity due to blu ray.

In my opinion the PS3 is superior, apart from online gaming.

Should I get my son an xbox 360 or a ps3 for his twelth birthday?

Answer
I would suggest to follow your son for buying the Xbox 360 because it is the best console ever made for gaming and he would love playing the most popular game n Xbox. right now is Halo reach. But if he likes watching blu-ray movies and playing online for free I would suggest the PS3.

Why cant my Blu Ray player get a signal from my router?

I have a Samsung Blu-Ray player that is hooked up to Linksys Cisco Gaming adapter. I have this problem often where the Adapter(Living Room) will not pick up signal from my Linksys Router(Bedroom). Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. So I am unable to watch Netflix. Are these two not compatible? Do I need a specific router/ adapter? Someone please help!

Answer
No if it sometimes works then what you probably need to do is get your wireless adapter up higher. If it is stuffed in the back of your player the signal is most likely being blocked. So you need to somehow get it extended.

Time to do some measurements and research:
Does it use a standard RJ45 plug ( Ethernet plug ) if so get a Ethernet coupler at RadioShack and a few extra feet of Ethernet cable and some Velcro.

If the wireless adapter uses USB, then get a USB extension cable and some Velcro.

Stick the wireless adapter up high out of the cabinet you might have it in.

Rule of thumb: Higher is always better when it comes to antennas.

Personally.... I would just run a long Ethernet cable from your router to your DVD player. But that's me. Pure signal no chance for error.

How can i get my Blu-ray player to play at 240 hz?

yruonme213

I just recently bought a a Sony Blu-ray player. I have already had a samsung 240 hz tv. When i play a movie such as 300 on the blu-ray player, it only says that it's on 24hz. I'd like to be able to play it at a full 240 hz. Or does it not matter what the input signal says and its just the tv? Thanks in advance.

Answer
240 Hz is mostly fiction. LCD screens do it because LCD's struggle to switch fast enough for action movies. It is a way of telling the consumer that this TV plays action movies really well. The only thing that does 240 Hz is the TV itself. Movies, on the other hand, are filmed at 24 Hz. The only way to get them to run at 240 Hz is to use interpolation to artificially generate 9 non existent frames between each real one. It is NOT worth doing so thy don't.

Not only is there no material that runs at 240 Hz, there is no material at 120 Hz. As for 1080p 60Hz, while possible, I do not know of anything that does. Programs on your TV are broadcast at 1080i or 60 half frames. This resolution is no worse then anything else as your LCD panel MUST capture both halves of the frame, then integrate them before displaying. So, while your signal is 1080i, the TV MUST make it 1080p for display. That is, it takes 60 half frames and makes 30 full frames out of it. This is true for both Plasma and LCD. In some ways, it is better then your Blu-ray movies in that it has 6 more frames per second. However, Cable and Satellite both compress the crap out of the signal, far more then Blu-ray movies.

The really short answer is, don't worry about it.

I personally prefer the Wii as it's really great fun and interactive.
Thanks for any replies.

Answer
Both systems appeal to different markets.

The Playstation 3 is a Blu-Ray player capable of streaming music, videos or pictures off your computer and displaying them onto your TV. It can upscale standard definition DVD's to 720 and 1080 resolutions. It is able to download movie trailers from the Playstation store. It's more than a gaming console, it has the potential (some already exhibited) to be the center of your home entertainment center. Video is output purely digital via HDMI along with audio. Audio support is up to 7.1 surround sound. The Playstation appeals more to people who enjoy high definition gaming along with surround sound audio which allows you to be fully immersed into the experience. Alot of the games released are for a more mature audience. The Playstation interfaces with the Playstation Portable. You are able to turn on, off and control your Playstation 3 with your PSP. This includes watching movies, viewing photos or listening to music. This allows you to take your PSP anywhere in the world, access the Internet wirelessly and interface with your PS3. The PS3 controller supports the ability to sense both rotational orientation and translational acceleration along all three dimensional axes so there is some feedback with the controller and interaction with games. There is a rumble enabled controller coming soon. Some versions of the PS3 support backward compatability with the huge library of PS1 and PS2 games. You are also able to install Linux and stream games that are installed onto your computer to your Playstation 3 and play them using a USB keyboard and mouse attached to it.

The Wii on the other hand does basically one thing and one thing very well - games. It does not offer any sort of movie playback - high definition or even standard DVD's. It does not support putting video out digitally, it uses RCA or Component for video, both are analog. It outputs display at 480, it will not output at 720 or 1080 resolutions. It does not support anything more than 2 channels of audio. Most games are rated E or appeal to a younger audience with less violence, gore and language. You cannot play any music on it, stream any videos or photos to it and then onto your TV or home audio system. The Wii does not interface at all with the Nintendo DS. The Wii does support GameCube games and they have and are releasing more NES games that you can purchase and play.

As you can see, both systems offer things the other doesn't and both have different places they will end up being used. I personally purchased a Playstation 3 for Blu-Ray movie playback. I have since enabled it as a streaming movie, music and photo player. I also enjoy some gaming on it, although I am primary a computer gamer. I purchased a Wii and while very interactive, found the experience to be fairly shallow and at times when I didn't feel like being interactive, unable to do so. I returned it. I don't have kids (more of a Wii friendly console) or an interest in the interactivity the Wii allows and don't generally find the Nintendo library unappealing. I prefer high definition movie playback, standard definition movie upscaling, 7.1 audio surround sound and 1080 resolution gaming. I'm glad you enjoy your Wii. The key to any system is to be happy with it and make sure it fits your needs/wants.

I have a semi proffessional video camera that uses hdv tapes, whats the best way to transfer them?

Sal

whats the best way to transfer them for editing and then putting it on dvd so that I retain the image and sound quality?
sorry, a bit new to all this. thnaks if you can help:)

Answer
Connect a firewire cable to the camcorder's DV port and the computer's firewire port.

USB won't work. USB-to-firewire cable/converteradapter things won't work.

Launch the DV/HDV capable video editor and import or capture the video.

This will be uncompressed, 1080i, high definition video. 60 minutes of this will consume about 44 gig of your computer's hard drive space.

After editing, you can export or render to whatever you want or need. For uploading to a video sharing site (like YouTube), an h.264 encoded MOV or AVI file at high quality is good.

For a regular standard definition DVD, you can use that same h.264 file with a DVD rendering app (like iDVD or DVD Maker) to make a DVD-player readable standard definition disc (VOB file).

For high definition video, you should render out to a "Blu Ray" format (MTS) file and burn to a Blu Ray disc using a Blu Ray burner (LaCie makes good ones). This disc will playback only in a Blu Ray player.

Since you did not tell us which camcorder, computer, operating system or video editor, there's not much more detail we can provide...
