I am getting a new Blu-Ray player for Christmas. My question is this: Does Wi-Fi ready mean that it is capable of streaming Netflix movies? In other words, are Wi-Fi Ready and Netflix capable two different things OR does Wi-Fi Ready imply that it will play Netflix movies?

Answer
WiFi ready means you need a wireless adapter to connect Blu-ray player to your wirelss router. Netflix is just a feature built-in on a Blu-ray player.

Can I connect a Blu-ray player to the internet thru my broadband card?

big D

Question 1- Is it possible to connect a blu-ray player to my laptop and broadband WiFi internet card, in order to collect the updates and needed information to keep the player up to date?

Question 2- Is it possible to 'trick' the blu-ray player into thinking it has an internet connection by plugging my broadband card into the usb slot on the player, IF the player has built in WiFi ability?

Answer
The capabilties of a player relate directly to the abilities of the hardware and firmware. Even if the hardware supported a connection you would have to reverse engineer and change the firmware.

Most external connections on a player are to update this said firmware. Be it Serial, USB or Firewire etc.

blu ray player 5.1 analogue output image

Tazman1958

i have a stereo, and a cd player. I just bought my first flat screen tv and a blu ray player. Keep in mind the stereo is a Pioneer from the late 80's and the cd player is a generic five disc model (Fisher) from the mid 90's. The TV and the Blu Ray are both Samsung. I also have Direct TV hookup if this makes a difference.

Answer
It wont work.

Your stereo is 2-channel. This means 2 speakers worth of sound.

Your DirectTV box MIGHT have red/white RCA outputs if it is a standard def unit. But you are really going to need to upgrade the box to a HD unit which will have optical which contains Dolby Digital 5.1 (6 speakers) of sound.

There ARE devices that can down-mix the 5.1 sound from optical to left/right analog for headphones or stereo use. But only one company makes these and they seem to be out of stock on Amazon because .... it's a crappy idea.

You probably need to buy a SoundBar that accepts optical or a better choice would be a 5.1 system. Look at the Denon + Boston Acoustics package over at B&H photo.

Onkyo also sells some box systems on Amazon.

Hope this helps.

What is the best HD DVD player that will upgrade to 1080i and will accept Blue Ray as well?

Dolly

Also want the best sound quality as well. I went to consumers reports site and still cannot get the answer I want. I do know about the Denon reciever with the DVD in it that upgrades but never said anything about Blue Ray, I really don't want to buy a new reciever because I have the onyko. Thanks to all that answer.

Answer
All HD-DVD players currently support 1080i output. Some support 1080p, some do not... don't expect upgrades to change a 1080i player into a 1080p player.

No HD-DVD player will support Blu-Ray discs, now or in the future. What you want here is a combination player, or whatever you want to call it. To date, there have been three of these, all from traditional Blu-Ray companies.

The first was the LG BH100. This came out in early 2007, and it's basically a full featured Blu-Ray player that will also kinda-sorta play HD-DVDs, but won't support all of the HD-DVD features.
http://www.hometheatermag.com/discplayers/0307lgbdhd/

This has since been replaced by the LG "SuperBlu" BH200, which claims to be a fully functional HD-DVD player, as well as the usual Blu Ray stuff. This one does 1080p and has a 5.1 analog output, decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, and DTS-HD.... it better, it costs about $1000.

The third is the BD-UP5000 from Samsung. It's not quite out yet, and it should be similarly priced. See here
http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9749669-7.html

As for sound quality.. well, ideally, you have a digital cable from the disc player to your receiver, and so the audio quality of the player itself is moot. Of course, as you're saying, the new audio formats in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will require a new receiver, if you want this digital decoding in your receiver. The first BD and HD-DVD players have onboard decoding of at least some of the standard formats... you can run cables into your receiver's 5.1 or 7.1 input from these. At that point, the quality and the specific formats the BD/HD-DVD player decodes will matter.... I haven't even followed all that, since there's so much chaos out there.

One thing to note: all "plain" HD-DVD players currently come from Toshiba. Other than the cheap HD-DVDs coming Real Soon Now from China, they make all of the HD-DVD players. So if you're not happy with Toshiba's quality, you may be out of luck. On the Blu-Ray side, Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Denon, Pioneer, Sharp, Lite-On, Mitsubishi, Funai, JVC, Loewe, Daewoo, and others are making Blu-Ray players. So there's more variety.

I certainly hope that "Universal" players catch on.. that may be the only way out of this format war. You can expect Toshiba and Sony to be the last folks anywhere to make such players, and probably awhile for the Chinese, too, since this adds cost. So you need to watch the rest of the current "Blu-Ray" folks, to see if this catches on or not.

Software upgrades are nothing terribly new. The Denon DVD-3800 allows them, but it's clumsy.. you have to copy the upgrade files onto an SD card. All HD-DVD players supposedly have ethernet (it's a requirement), as will a class of Blu-Ray players, making updates easier. My own IOData AVeL Linkplayer2 (a high-def red laser player) has had an ethernet connection and update web function for over three years now. It's really crazy to make any digital device these days without some firmware update feature. But no software update is going to turn an HD-DVD player into a Blu-Ray combo player.. you need new drive electronics for that.

With the advent of the Blu-ray disc and Blu-ray disc players, will DVD players be too obsolete to repair?

Answer
It's not a question of obsolescence, DVD players are just like most consumer electronics ... they cost so little for all but top level models that repair is uneconomical. In general, it isn't worth fixing anything significant on ANY consumer electronics component that cost less than $300 or so ... and even then it's questionable. It's a question of cost of the repair (likely more than $100 for almost anything) and the fact that new models often cost less and work better than what they replace.

is the ability to use pandora, blockbuster, or netflix on a blu ray player by connecting it to the internet worth the cost? i mean should i bother spending the money for a blu ray wireless adapter just for that?

Answer
Some Blu Ray players download updates through the internet, it would be worth it for you to buy the adapter if your Blu Ray player does download updates.

As for Netflix, I'm assuming you'll be watching their instant movies. In that case, you will have to consider your internet download speed and the quality of the movies (in case resolution is important to you). If you have a medium to slow connection the image resolution in which you'll see the instant movie will be low. If you have a pretty fast internet connection, then you'll be able to watch them in HD. Now as far as I know, you can use Netflix instant viewing through an XBox 360, PS3, or Roku Player. Before I even buy an adapter I would make sure I can use my Blu Ray player with what you're trying to do.

As for Pandora, I personally don't use it, but if I was you I would consider three things. How much I use it, how am I using it right now, would using it through the blu ray player be worth it.

I do not use blockbuster.

How do I add a home theater system to my Sony BDP-S590 blu ray player without a Receiver?

bhagy

I have a Sony BDP S590 3D blu ray player and would like to add a home theater system to it without investing in another Receiver. How can I do it? Any recommendations on a reasonable system that I can buy? Let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You don't. It is not practical as evidenced by all the other answers. The only way to do it with practicality is to buy a surround preamp / processor and powered speakers but such will cost far more than a surround receiver. Unless you have some kind of receiver - phobia this is not practical. You can not just plug speakers into a blu ray or DVD player, there is no magical adapter - unless you consider a receiver an adapter. Now choose a best answer.

Is there any difference between a cheaper blu-ray player and a ps3 in visual quality?

My dad bought a ps3 a while back and he said i can take it as long as I replace it with another blu-ray player. Is there any difference in visual quality between a ps3 and a cheap blu-ray player? (one that goes for about 150$) PLEASE HELP

Answer
The PS3 is still rated very highly in blu-ray player reviews, usually because of all it's other features and the ability to update features and firmware. If your dad just wants a player then i'm sure a $150 will be fine, there may be a reduction in quality but it wont be huge.

Suggest a model to your dad and see what he thinks.

The person below who says that the PS3 doesn't have 7.1 or TrueHD is wrong. I know because I use both. You just need an AV receiver that supports it, and that applies to ALL blu-ray players.

So many tvs and monitors are falsely advertised as 120hz and 240hz yet they only natively support 60hz and upscale in the monitor itself! Where can I get a native via HDMI 120hz or 240 hz monitor?

Answer
Broadcast HD video is at 60 Hz. Most TVs have that as the native synch rate. But some TVs with 3D alternate frame tech do 120 or 240 Hz from the Blu-Ray player. My Samsung series 8000 is like that. Not sure how to access that higher frame rate, since my computer's HDMI output to the TV is stuck at 60Hz. I suppose a higher end card might have a 120 or 240 Hz rate driver choice.

is a 120hz 1080p samsung a 3d ready tv?

I bought the samsung lcd in the beginng of 2009 and i dont want to have to buy another tv ... Is a 120hz 1080p full hd series6 a 3d ready tv????it didnt say 3d ready when i bought it..

Answer
Series 6 - No it is not.

From the Samsung press release,

3D technology will be available in the LED 9000, 8000, and 7000 series models, as well as the plasma 7000 and 8000 series televisions and a Blu-ray player.

The release came out just a matter of days ago. The Samsung 3D HDTVs literally just came out (though were announced at CES in January).

I wouldn't be to worried about it. There is a lack of 3D content currently available. Glasses cost a fortune. 3D technology will likely get overhauled within 5 years. A bunch of manufacturers are working hard to develop glassless 3D. Many are skeptical, but many are working hard to make it work. So you could see a revolutionized 3D sooner, rather than later. So I wouldn't get hung up on not having 3D for the next while.

Many of my standard DVD's are original movies. But I also bought many in the Singapore and Hong Kong markets as well burned some on my own PC with some software. Is there a Blu-ray player that will play all of them?
On a related note are there any universal players (non-region coded)?

Answer
There are several DVD players without a region code. The best part is that they are typically the ones your see on sale for "dirt cheap" under $50 bucks. They are generally made without region coding. Most wont say "multi-region", but they usually are. Keep your receipt and all the packing just in case you need to take it back.
As for something that plays multi-region Blu-ray? Good luck. I am sure there are places on the "good ol' web" that could explain how to reset/unlock the region code in your DVD player. The positive side is that you can now play DVDs from just about anywhere. The down side is that you have now VOIDED any and all warranties by the manufacturer and Blu-rays still ain't cheap so it could get expensive if you have any Technical

You better believe it! I like to go to the day after Thanksgiving sales too. A group of us ladies gets up at 4:30 a.m. and goes to another ladies house for coffee and rolls and we look thru the ads and schedule where we will go when depending on when different stores open and we have a large vehicle we fill up a couple of times and have to have one ladies husband come and unload it and take it home so we can keep shopping without having to return home. We spend about 16 or 17 hours on the road between our town and several towns close to us.

Can you hook up a Blu Ray player to a Panasonic surround sound system?

blu ray player has no sound image
Q. I'm interested in buying a Blu Ray player, but I don't want to buy a new surround sound system.
I forgot to mention that the surround sound system has a DVD player built into it.

Answer
Some entry level surround systems have few or even no audio inputs. If you want 5.1 surround, then your surround receiver would need to have an optical (or coaxial) digital audio input (and the Blu-ray player would need an audio output to match, either optical or digital).

If your surround receiver has stereo audio inputs (red and white color coded RCA inputs), then you could connect the Blu-ray player that way, but this would be 2.0 stereo, and not 5.1 surround.

If you can get the audio connected to the surround system, I am guessing you would still connect the Blu-ray player's video output directly to the TV, because your receiver probably has no video input, or at least no HD video input.

Not directly.

You need either a firmware update from the manufacturer, or they have a dynamic app structure where apps are loaded over the web as needed, or from an app store like structure.

The firmware update and/or apps likely come over the web.

How do you connect Amazon Prime Movies to the PS3?

we p

I have an Amazon Prime account and I was wondering what are the steps to play the free movies on my PS3? Please let me know, thanks (:

Answer
Amazon Instant Video is not available on the PS3.

In order to watch Amazon Instant Video, you will need a TV that has the built in app (currently Panasonic, Samsung, and Vizio TVs are the only TVs with built in Amazon), a set-top box or DVR that has the built in app (such as a Roku player, Tivo, or Sony Internet Video Link), or a Blu-ray player that has the built in app (currently only Sony and Panasonic stand alone Blu-ray players).

The PS3 does not currently have an Amazon app, so the PS3 can not use Amazon. In the future, if the Amazon app is added to the PS3, you will then be able to use the PS3, the same way it uses Hulu, Vudu, and Netflix (there will be an app for it under the Video section).

Since Amazon has just started this, I would expect to see an Amazon app in the future, but probably not for at least a couple more months (it may not even happen until next year).

I'm always being told i need firmware updates to my Blu ray player, however I do not have it connected to the Internet. Connection can only be made through Ethernet and my Home Network is on another floor of the house. So how would i go about getting the proper updates? Do i even need updates, since I do not use any of the online features, I just use it to view DVDs and Blu rays?

Answer
you may need some firmware updates to play certain movies...blu ray players may have some updates to allow you to play 3d blu ray movies and transmit them into 3d...you need a 3d compatible tv, at the moment 120hz/120fps but soon to be 240hz/fps...because the picture is divided into 60hz instead of 120hz...so you may notice some choppiness but it's very minute when you play blu ray on 60hz tv instead of 120hz because blu rays play at 24hz and 24 doesn't divide easily into 60...best bet is to run a wire to it and a tv close to your router just so it displays on a tv and you can get the update then run it back to your normal tv you watch it on

What does an upconvert dvd player convert the display too?

diggittey

I have a 720p hd tv-but also have a blu ray dvd player, and I know they play at 1080i--just wondering if watching blu ray dvd on a 720p is redundant in that an upconvert can give the same image. Just curious???? I plan on getting a 1080--just waiting to see the 120hz's to come down. thanks.

Answer
There is no 'stretching' involved.

It's not making it true HD

What they are doing is basically tons and tons of math. The signal on a DVD is 480 pixels by 720. So a chip in these players is taking that and making it into 1080x1920 i or p or 720p. It comes out as that new higher res signal, but it can't create more detail that what the original contained. It's just a trick, and it's generally better done on a DVD player than in the TV.

It does help things look cleaner and less jagged since you can notice such things more easily on a huge HDTV. But understand, no upconverting player, no matter how expensive or how advanced the chipset, will give you more detail than a true high def, high bit rate source like a blu ray disc.

Not all 720p HDTV have the same res, as there are three different pixel counts depening on the display tech. They are 1024x768, 1280x720 and 768x1365 (give or take) the pixel count runs from about 750k to about 1 million, that's three to 4 times higher pixel count than regular DVD.

So even though you don't have full HD, you'll still get the benefit of the extra def that blu ray offers. The player can be set to 720p or the TV will down convert a 1080i signal (if you set the player to that) note, not all 720p sets can handle or convert a 1080p signal. Not to worry just set the player to another resolution.

Hope this helps, go out and get a blu ray on black friday! Wal mart will have one for 128 rocks, that is if they have any left.

I recently got a new HD TV and I already had a blu-ray DVD player, the installer told me to get an even better picture on my TV I should buy a "HD cable" to connect from my blu-ray player to my tv. What type of cable was he talking about and does it really make a lot of difference in picture quality?
Thanks!

Answer
HDMI cable which is used for High Definition. There are a couple of different HDMI cables, but the most important to remember is that a $100 cable and $30 one will show absolutely no difference, so don't get caught by those sellers trying to make you buy an HDMI cable for $100.

You can check here for more information on HDMI cables (there's versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.0_to_1.2

Generally, you'll want an HDMI 1.3, or if it's for 3D, you'll want 1.4. It usually is written on the box/bag which version it is.

What is the difference between streaming players, and a blu ray player?

Unfortunately, I currently have the super slow bd-p 1500 blu ray player and I am thinking of upgrading to get Netflix streaming. Thanks!

Answer
At the moment your choices are still somewhat limited, but that will be changing soon. If you want something _right_now_ you'll still be looking at the new Samsung models that load considerably faster. The BDP 1600, which replaced the 1500 model, or there is always a higher up/more expensive Samsung you could get. Or you could go with an LG. I think the Samsung would be a better choice. You could find a 1600 on Ebay for about $185. Walmart sells (online) the model 1590 which is basically a 1600 with a slightly different face to it and sells for $50 less than the 1600 in the stores. They sell for about the same in Ebay.
However, Sony just announced that they will start selling next month a new player that will stream Netflix once they have a firmware upgrade ready later this fall. ($250) No reviews yet on that model as it has just barely been announced. It will probably be similar to their 360 model or perhaps a bit better.

Answer
Are you saying that you want Walmart to accept something you bought at another store in exchange for one of their products?

If so, it will not happen. You can't return a product to a different company than the one you bought it. For example, Gap and Banana Republic are owned by the same parent company, and they won't even let you return a Gap product to a Banana Republic store.

There is certainly no way they will let you "return" a product to a store that is completely unrelated to the store you purchased from.

Why not just return the Blu Ray player to the place you purchased it and use that money to buy a PS3?

How can I share my laptop's (Windows 7) WiFi internet to my Ethernet Blu-ray player?

brian123

I have a Samsung Blu-ray which can be connected to the internet through an Ethernet cable. The problem is that my router is very far away from it and I wanted to know if there is a way to share my WiFi connection through my computer's ethernet jack. I have tried ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) but couldn't connect to the internet, only to Local Network.

Answer
You can configure Internet sharing on the laptop.

For XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314066

For Win 7 / Vista - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing

There are better solutions:

You can use wireless Ethernet adapters. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20ethernet%20adapter&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ether%2Caps%2C606 Wireless Ethernet adapters pick up the wireless signal and have a Ethernet jack to connect to your device.

You can also use powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

i have a xbox 360 and the highest resoultion it can go is 1080i. and i also get local channels in 1080i HD. would i still be able to player blu ray discs on it?

Answer
Of course you can....you don't think ANY blu-ray developer would ONLY make it work on 1080P do you?

Of course not...they'd lose over 90 % of the general population if they did that....

Relax, you'll like it in 1080i....

Just don't act like THE SCRUTINIZERS® and eyeball it from 6 inches away....Most of those guys have some sort of Anal--Mommy Complex anyways.

What can I play on my HDTV that is in 1080p, and is the higher resolution even worth it?

Q. 1080p displays are the newest types of LCD displays on the market. Although broadcasters do not send a 1080p signal yet, the newest Blu-ray and HD DVD players do. If you want the highest possible picture detail and a display that will accommodate higher resolutions in the future, then the cost may be worth it.

Answer
TV stations will not send any 1080P signals out, the bandwidth requirements exceed the 6 Mhz bandwidth that the FCC allows per channel.

They can transmit 1080i, but cannot transmit 1080P signals due to this limitation.

But DVD players can send a 1080P signal...and if the demand exists in the Future....you may see 2160P.

Is there a REAL difference between 1080P and 1080i ?

You would have to Sit RIGHT ON TOP OF THE TV SET to actually see the difference.
Round objects are smoother/rounder on 1080P, of course it is limited by the FACT that all display panels use square pixels to create a round object...

So there are limitations to the roundness of objects anyways....

I would suggest SITTING BACK and enjoying the whole picture and letting our eyes process the "squared circles" into smooth round circles.
Persistance of vision is an amazing part of our human design.

Is it worth the money to get a 1080P TV set?
YES !

You have to understand that 1080P TV sets actually have a 1920 x 1080 display panel, rather than a 1280 x 768 display in them.

A 1080P TV set is actually HIGHER DEFINITION than ones that can only process 720P and 1080i.

Native resolution is a very important value, and that wonderful [[1080P]] sticker on most TV sets tell you that you have purchased the HIGHEST Native Resolution DISPLAY that you can get !!

How do i fix the audio sync issue on my blu ray player?

blu ray player issues

blu ray player issues image

Damon Jack

I have a sony BDP S480. Its a 3D Blu ray player and it is quite badly out of sync. I have tried the A/V sync option and that just makes it worse. If it makes a difference the tv is a Samsung UE40D6530 LCD/LED HD 1080p 3D TV.

Answer
Many home theaters have the ability to inject various delays in the audio stream to deal with this very issue. Don't know how the TV deals with it. This is something you can't auto fix.

What's the best possible solution to get a DVD or Blu-Ray player go to "sleep" after a period of time?

Jean Luc P

Every night I go to bed I put on a DVD and fall asleep to it. I've been running though DVD players though as they tend to not appreciate running on the menu over and over all night long. I'd like a solution to put this issue to rest; whether it be a DVD or Blu-Ray player with a sleep function, a universal remote, or something else. What would be the best way to make this work?

Answer
You can buy sockets which power off after a certain time.

codwhy047

I am considering asking for one for my birthday and already have a XBox 360. The main reason i would ask for a PS3 is because of its blu-ray capabilities. My friend told me that it is not a very good blu-ray player, so I am just curious.

Answer
It'll hit 9 of 10 if you have a Blu-ray remote.
