Blu Ray player playing DVDs?

Karen

Hi guys.

Brought a blu ray player around a month ago and I'm converted.

What I don't understand is if a Blu Ray player upscales a DVD to near Blu ray quality, what is the quality that it doesn't alter ? I.E is the picture stil not quite as good as Blu Ray

I get that Blu Ray will let you go on internet and has specials features but I'm not intrested in this - just the movie.

Thanks !

Why does my Sony Blu Ray Player keep changing the source mode of my television?

Pharmwanna

I have a Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray Player that when powered on will have to be unplugged before I can switch back to cable. I even powered it down but it will boot back up as soon as I change the source on the television.

To get back to cable, I unplug the HDMI cable from the television but it is getting annoying. What should I do?

I have the new apple tv and it doesn't do that on or off. It must be the player.

Answer
Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper is the Blu-ray disc ripper and widescreen DVD ripper for you to backup your Blu-ray disc and DVD disc. You can store the Blu-ray copy or DVD copy on computer, WD TV, Apple TV, NAS and home server for playing on HD TV, or burn to a blank disc for BD-R without copy protection.

Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper also enables you to play on portable devices like iPad, iPod, iPhone 4, PSP, PS3, Xbox, Droid X, Droid 2, HTC EVO 4G, Nexus One and Archos, edit Blu-ray movie and DVD movie on Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. You can even upload home-made Blu-ray movie and DVD movies to YouTube, Motionbox and share with families and friends after conversion.

It helps you backup Blu-ray disc and DVD disc, which are encoded with copy protection, region code, AACS (up to MKBv17) or BD+, and rip TrueHD, DTS-HD and EAC3 audio. The program also lists Blu-ray chapters and titles, DVD chapters and title for you to easily copy the main movie. You can choose the subtitle and audio streams with the language you like.

If I'm on a budget would buying a blu-ray player with a 720p res. instead of a 1080p make a big diff.?

Jacob Sant

I was wondering because I saw a deal with a 720p TV with a blu-ray entertainment system

Answer
Blu-ray players are all 1080p output (native for Blu-ray disks), but can output at lower resolutions too.

Most people sit too far back from their HDTVs, so they get little or no benefit from 1080p (in other words the same size 720p HDTV would look the same, resolutionwise. Soooo .... unless you buy a very large (46"+) HDTV and/or plan to watch the 720p HDTV close up, or there is a faulty scaler in either the TV or the Blu-ray player (To get 720p either the TV or the player has to "scale" the native Blu-ray 1080p to 720p) you are unlikely to notice any significant difference. And even if there was one, you wouldn't have any way to compare.

Furthermore keep in mind there is more to image quality than resolution. In fact resolution is the 4th most important atribute afater contrast, color accuracy and color saturation.

Should I buy a Blu-Ray player?

Nick

I bought a flat screen on Black Friday that I just recently found out has HD. I was thinking it would be pretty sweet to watch "Wanted" or "Step Brothers" in true HD quality, but is Blu-Ray on it's way out?
-Nick

Answer
Blu-Ray is definitely worth it! Go into Best Buy and take a look at one that is playing, but I warn you you will probably end up buying one like I did! I went in for some 9 volt batteries and left with a Sony! Of course keep in mind, BB probably has it running on a 1080p hdtv so depending on the size and resolution of your tv, it may not be as sharp, but its awesome.

When are blu-ray dvd recorders coming out?

Julian S

I don't mean burners for computers; I'm aware those have been available for over a year. I'm talking about stand alone dvd recorders for TVs; like a vcr or current dvd recorders. I currently have one but it's just a regular dvd recroder that obviously can't read or record blu-ray discs, and more importantly isn't HDMI so I have to record everything in 480i. I'm so sick of it! I want full 1080p dag-blasted!

Answer
Don't hold your breath. There are huge issues with the legal rights of broadcast owners and other DRM junk that will certainly limit what you can record off the air, and even then may prevent recording at full resolution. This could very well make Blu-ray recorders only useful for recording from HD camcorders.

You're better off building up a PVR computer using an HDTV tuner card. You can fit a decent amount of high-quality 1080p video on a dual or single-layer DVD and be compatible with Blu-ray players. Tuner cards that handle over-the-air ATSC and HD cable are less than $100. Snapstream Beyond TV should make for an excellent PVR that anyone in the family can figure out.

If you already have a standalone HD PVR, there may well be a way to extract the saved video from the hard drive so you can edit and burn them on the computer.

Hi does anyone make a Blu-ray / DVD hard disk recorder?

jammyking@

does anyone know if you can buy a DVD recorder with hard disk that also plays blu-ray disks? i was thinking of buying a dvd recorder but would prefer to have one that plays blu-ray too. I've heard of blu-ray disc recorders in the near future but i'm not interested in that yet as it will be way to expensive.

Answer
At the present the only way to do this is to get a Blu-ray/DVD player/recorder for a computer. There are no stand alone hard disk recorders that are Blu-ray compatible yet. When these do hit the market they are likely to be very expensive as is everything to do with Blu-ray.

Are DVD's going out of style now that Blu-Ray is around?

Sally Cat

I went to ebay to sell some of my old DVD's now that I have Blu-Ray and plan to upgrade some of them. However, I see DVD's as good as Spiderman and Inception selling for as low as $1 on ebay! For $1 I might as well just give it to a friend of mine lol.

So I'm going to assume DVD's are going downhill big time? If so, why are the retail prices still high for DVD's? I work at Kmart and someone purchased a DVD movie for $25.

Answer
Yes, DVDs are becoming the way of the past. Based upon how quickly the U.S. switched from cassette to CD, and from VHS to DVD, Blu-ray should become the primary media of home theater by about 2018. People don't think about it, but DVD's are already on their way out. When you walk into a retail store the shelf space that used to be entirely DVD movies and DVD players, is now being slower replaced by Blu-ray discs and players.

Also, not all movies have been re-released on Blu-ray yet, as as such the retail stores still charge premium pricing on these rather than the lower pricing that we generally see when both the Blu-ray and DVD versions are readily available.

Do people line up for KMART Thanksgiving Day sale that starts at 7am?

tweetys_01

I am wanting to get the Sony Blu Ray DVD player that is on sale for $180 and I was wondering if people wait outside for the store to open on Thanksgiving Day like on Black Friday. If they do what time should I get there? Thanks in advance.

Answer
You better believe it! I like to go to the day after Thanksgiving sales too. A group of us ladies gets up at 4:30 a.m. and goes to another ladies house for coffee and rolls and we look thru the ads and schedule where we will go when depending on when different stores open and we have a large vehicle we fill up a couple of times and have to have one ladies husband come and unload it and take it home so we can keep shopping without having to return home. We spend about 16 or 17 hours on the road between our town and several towns close to us.

Blu Ray update firmware?

tmurph9903

I have a memorex Blu ray player that i got for christmas. When i tried to watch Horton Hears a Who, however, it said i needed a firmware update to watch..

i tried several times to download the firmware on to a CD-R disc and put it in the player, but it never worked. Can somebody help? Is there any way Memorex would send me a CD with the firmware already on it?

i have a Mac.

thank you..

Answer
Well, i dont have a Memorex blu ray player, but i have a Sony. when you download the firmware, you cannot burn it to a disk as a data CD, you have to do the Burn Image option in your burning software. i just did this yesterday with my Sony, so it should be the same with Memorex.

Sony offers that you can request a free firmware CD via mail, so i'd imagine that Memorex does too, contact their support.

Why doesn't Mac let you download certain games? :(?

MJWorldPea

@Duncan Please provide me a working link to download the game Façade on Mac. When you do, that's when I'm gonna listen to you.

Answer
Macintosh and Windows are completely different. It is like a Blu Ray disk and a DVD. The Blu Ray can only work on Blu Ray players. The DVD can be played in every DVD/Blu Ray player. Mac's aren't made for games and Windows is. It is just the way they are made that makes them different and that is that. Sorry that you have a Mac. Mac's are overpriced pieces of junk that don't let you do anything and don't let you run any software/game. Hope this helps.

VCR, DVD now Blu-ray, What should i expect?

stanley d

Hi I live in Melboune Australia, i Remember 4-6 years ago you whould walk into a video store and you whould find all Tapes and maybe a little shelf of dvds.

Now i walk into a video store all you see is dvds and a little shelf of bluray or Hd-dvd disks

How long should it be until Bluray is everywhere insted of dvds?

also what is bluray?

and how much gb are the disks?

Answer
Blu-Ray is doing ok... but here's the thing -- it may never completely replace DVDs. There was a very compelling reason to replace tape with DVD... a disc is much easier to handle, random access, digital vs. analog, much better quality, etc. Blu-Ray is a nice upgrade, but it's going to be seen as more of an evolution than a revolution, particularly since every Blu-Ray player also plays DVDs.

What will happen in the next few years is that high-end DVD-only players will vanish... every player at, say, $200 and above will be Blu-Ray. Then it'll drop to $100 and above, and at some point, most people will have Blu-Ray players. But they may not have them yet in the kids rooms, the car, the boat, the portable, the laptop, etc. So people may still buy DVDs for some time yet. At present, disc sales are closing in on around 10% of the laser disc market.

The push toward digital televsion world wide may help here, since most digital TVs are high-defnition... people will get used to watching HD. This kind of thing never happened with high definition audio, both because most people do not have stereos good enough to really tell the difference between CD and DVD-Audio or SACD... and also because the format war there ended in a stalemate.

Blu-Ray delivers video up to 1920x1080, in 60fps interlaced, 50fps interlaced, or 24fps progressive formats today. It suppports the same MPEG-2 video standard as on DVD, but also two more advanced formats, AVC (also called MPEG-4 part 10 or H.264) and VC-1 (formerly known as Windows Media Video 9). Audio can be up to 8 tracks (7.1 surround sound), and they support raw (PCM), several near lossless compressions, and some new versions of the DTS and Dolby audio standards used on DVD. Blu-Ray also supports a form of the Java language, which allows far more complex user interfaces to be defined than on DVD, along with interactive features and live internet connections.

Each layer of a Blu-Ray disc stores 25GB of data, and like DVDs, they can be two layers (currently), for up to 50GB of data. The format is actually a new revision of UDF, so many computers can't yet read these without extra software along with extra hardware. The laser used is a blue-violet laser at 405nm. There are both ROM (BD-ROM), write-once (BD-R) and read/write (BD-RE) versions of the Blu-Ray disc.

Lots of people like to claim that digital downloads will beat out Blu-Ray, but in practical use that's 5-10 years away, unless you sacrifice quality (which is precedented -- very few digital music downloads even match CD quality, much less something better). Consider a $20 Blu-Ray disc (US price, on-sale) which can store up to 50GB of data. At common US internet speeds, that will take around 24 hours to download, assuming your network actually averages around 5Mb/s for a full day (and also assuming that the new download limits, in the range of 300GB/month, are removed by commercial ISPs). That will currently cost me $5-$10 in computer storage, depending on which HDD I put the download... in addition to the price, which is likely to be comparable to a DVD or Blu-Ray purchase, anyway.

That would work, if you're not much of a collector.. you can fit 20 or more of those discs on your 1TB HDD (what, you don't have a spare 1TB HDD... I have over 4TB external storage... I'm a video guy, what can I say). But the price advantage is still well in favor of the Blu-Ray. Imagine a box set... I paid $40 for "Lost: Season 3" on Blu-Ray, somewhere around 300GB worth. That would have been a full monthly use of internet on many systems, taken a week to download, and it would cost as much in HDD space as it cost to buy on Blu-Ray.

So sure, downloads are coming... if you're happy with sub-DVD quality, they're already here in force. But for HD at top quality, maybe downloads start to compete with rentals at some point (particularly over closed networks like satellite, FiOS, or cable), but I don't think they will catch on as purchased until well after Blu-Ray is fully established.

Whats a better deal - purchasing a PS3 or a Blu Ray Player?

Me Y

Answer
Last year the answer was obvious - the PS3 was not much more expensive than a stand alone player and had great performance.

But now - $200 players are available and the prices are predicted to drop to $150 this summer. A lot less than the $400 PS3.

And some of the new Samsung players take a internet connection and have "Netflix" built in so you can watch the on-demand movies from NetFlix through the bluray player. (I dont believe the PS3 offers this).

While I am not a 'green' person - the PS3 consumes the power of 3 refrigerators. This is a bit of over-kill for movie watching.

So I am kind of leaning towards a stand alone BluRay player as being better.

I stumbled on to a pretty good website just for that a few weeks ago. I managed to get my Blu-ray player for like $75 less than had I just gone and bought a player from some store.

While watching a game on mlb.tv, I have to reload the game because it stops in the middle. I receive this error message to effect of "can't process your request". It happens multiple times during a games. Very frustrating. I'm watchin via a wireless (Fios) Sony Blu Ray.

Answer
I don't have that problem with MLB.TV. Is your Blu-ray player's firmware up to date? Maybe your Blu-ray player has weak Wi-Fi reception and is dropping the signal..? You may want to ask this question in the MLB.TV support forum.

Which Samsung Blu-ray player should I buy?

Q. I've been reading reviews and pretty much every Blu-ray player short of OPPO has negative reviews. I don't like LG or Sony's blu-ray interface so I decided on Samsung.

I can't decide between the following Samsung player:

BD-D5700

BD-D6700

Answer
The Samsung BD-D6700 sports dual HDMI outputs, built-in Wi-Fi, and one of the most extensive suites of streaming video services in comparable Blu-ray players this year, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, MLB.TV, Vudu and CinemaNow. Its 1GB of onboard memory is also more than you get in most of the competition.

Should I get a Playstaion 3 or just a blu-ray player?

KT21

Alright so I already have an Xbox 360, and can't decide if I should upgrade to a PS3 or just stay with my 360 and buy a blu-ray player. Are the PS3's graphics really that much better than the 360's? How's the online gaming experience? ETC. I know in you can now get a 120GB PS3 for about $300. Is it worth it?
Sorry forgot to say this.......... I don't have the money to buy a PS3 right now so I was thinking about selling my 360 to get a PS3. That's the question I meant to ask. I found a great blu-ray player for $100. So should I just buy the blu-ray player or sell my 360 to get a Playstation 3?

Answer
most people get the ps3 cuz it has blu ray then again they both have outstanding graphics. ps3 has bigger online rooms for intense kill zone 2 big online room in that game. they are both good in a way dont believe the other people who say one console is better than the other cuz its not true both have their flaws and both have good things just its up to the buyer to decide if u have a 360 might as well get the ps3 some games are only for a specific console u know. like kill zone only for ps3 and gears of war only for the 360 both outstanding games with killer graphics so its up to u man. its worth buying both consoles. period. i have both and no complains so far so yea its worth it

Do region free blu ray players also play any sort of DVD?

Elizabeth

I want to buy the new Hollow Crown DVD but I don't to wait a year. Also I want a Blu ray player b.c I need one lol. I know that Blu ray can play DVD but can region free also play DVD?

Answer
It depends on the player and on how far the unlocking goes...

You can buy a Blu-ray player that is unlocked for DVD only. This will play any region locked DVDs (codes 1~6), but it will only play Blu-rays for the zone you live in, i.e. Zone A - American continent, Zone B - Europe, etc. So, a player unlocked like this would play DVDs from around so you could buy the Hollow Crown DVD and play it.

Buying a fully unlocked Blu-ray player (Any Blu-ray zone + any DVD region) is possible but it is very expensive.

The alternative is to use a PC and some copy software to make a back-up disc that plays without having to worry about regions or zones. Google is your friend :-)

How do I watch Blu-ray movies on Windows 7?

I recently purchased a brand new MSI A6300 notebook. It comes with a blu-ray player and Windows 7. I have tried to use Intervideo WinDVD 8. But unfortunately, it does not play any BD discs. Supposedly Corel does not support this version of the software anymore.

Are there any alternative programs I can download for free to watch Bluray movies on Windows 7?

Answer
If it has a built in Blue Ray CD/DVD drive you do not need any additional software than what is installed on the laptop. Read the user guide/manual for the laptop section on using the optical drive.

Problems playing R1 DVDs with my DVD/Blu-Ray disc player?

FF

Brought a brand new dvd player.Every thing is okay but some problems with playing the R1 DVDR.Other Regions are fine with it.The problem is Color pictures appearing black and white in case of R1.
It's a Sony DVD player, I am from India.

Answer
Guess what?

Region 1 is NTSC, and India uses PAL.

Most likely, you won't be able to play Region 1 discs satisfactorily.

Maybe a multistandard TV would help.

Can anyone tell me if the Australian Sony BDP s370 Blu Ray Player is multi region?

I've done a bit of research but I keep getting different answers! I'm in region 4 and I want to buy a region 2 DVD to play on my sony player. Will it work, can anyone give me a definitive answer?
Rather than just copy pasting info from Wikipedia, I'd really like info on this specific DVD player, like if anyone else has tried etc. I'm looking to play a REGION 2 DVD on my Sony and I'm in Australia.

Answer
Dvd players have different regions than blu ray players. A region free dvd player has 0 on a label on the back of the player.

REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

As with the implementation of region codes for DVDs, Blu-ray Disc players sold in a specific geographical region are designed to play only discs authorized by the content provider for that region. This is intended to permit content providers (motion picture studios, etc.) the ability to support product differences in content, price, release date, etc., by region. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, "all Blu-ray Disc players...(and) Blu-ray Disc-equipped computer systems are required to support regional coding." However, "Use of region playback codes is optional for content providers..."[112] Some current estimates suggest 70% of available [movie] Blu-ray Discs from the major studios are region-code-free and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region.[113]

Movie studios have different region coding policies. Among major U.S. studios, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios have released all of their titles region-free.[114][115] Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. have released most of their titles region-free.[116][117][118] Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of region-free and region-coded titles.[119][120] 20th Century Fox and MGM have released most of their titles region-coded.[121][122]

The Blu-ray Disc region coding scheme divides the world into 3 regions, labeled A, B, and C.

Region A includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus the Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

Region B includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.

Region C contains the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People's Republic of China and Russia.

In circumvention of region coding restrictions, stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players are sometimes modified by third parties to allow for playback of Blu-ray Discs (and DVDs) with any region code.[123] Instructions ('hacks') describing how to reset the Blu-ray region counter of computer player applications to make them multi-region indefinitely are also regularly posted to video enthusiast websites and forums. Unlike DVD region codes, Blu-ray region codes are verified only by the player software, not by the optical drive's firmware.

Best DvD Blu-ray player for a PC for the price.?

Mike

I'm looking for a Blu-ray player to install into my computer. I basically want mid to upper-mid quality. This doesn't mean it has to be carved from gold and the latest model. I have logitech headphones($20) from 7yrs ago that still work, but my Razors break every 6-8months. $150-225 is my budget, but I could possibly go $325 if it's worth it. Please provide links if you have the time, thanks.

Answer
I bought an LG Blu-Ray burner for under $100 a year or so ago and it still works great. No need to spend big bucks. Cheap drives read the digital information just as well as expensive ones and sometimes even last longer. Optical drives are sensitive. You can get a bad one or one that's been damaged in shipping no matter how much you spend. It happens. Your player software and video card are what's responsible for picture quality.

You should be able to find a good Blu-Ray burner with good customer reviews for $100. Even less for something that only plays Blu-Ray and burns DVD and CD.

Wow... They're even cheaper these days...

Using a Vista PC as a network bridge for Blu-ray player?

T2427537

In my living room a have a PC running Vista Biz. It's connected wirelessly to a linksys router. It also has a unused network card. I also have Blu-ray player. Instead or running a cable to the router or buying a wireless adapter, I would like to connect a cable from the Blu-ray NIC to the PC NIC. Thus using the PC as a bridge. Can this be done and how do I do it? Does the cable need to be a crossover or will a regular Cat-5 cable work

Answer
Performance won't be great compared to a hardware solution but yes, you could turn on Internet connection sharing and do this. I assume a Blu-Ray player would only use the connection infrequently for updates, anyway?

You'd need a crossover cable since you're bypassing any hub/switch router and going direct between the NiCs of the two devices.

How to connect my computer to my sony s370 blu ray player?

Terri

I know that there is a way to connect my computer to stream to my sony s370 blu ray player. I would like to know if I would need a cable of some sort to connect them and if so what kind?
I've been looking this up for days and would love if someone could help me figure this out.

Thank you in advance.

Answer
What you have to do is get a router then you connect the Blu ray and the computer to the router using cat5 or cat 6 cable or you could also go wireless if you have the proper adapters and equipment for that and then you create a network, for the computer and the blu ray, most routers will do this fairly easily using an included disk that you insert into the computer, the network is also connected to the Internet, the blu ray does not have a browser so you cannot go any where on the internet nor can you transfer anything you want from your computer, the blu ray is limited to certain sites on the Internet it can visit and certain things it can do. The blu ray will not connect directly to your computer but I think there may be a way to send still photos from the computer to the blu ray that will appear on the TV screen.

if i bought a blu-ray player to install in my computer build will it work to play regular dvds.?

William

Answer
As said before, YES it will work. All Blu ray players play all dvd's and store bought cd's for sure. They are expensive because they are still reasonably new and there are still working with getting cheaper parts and what not. I say why not invest now because why continue to buy standard dvds if you are eventually getting a blu ray player. you dont want to waste money on standard dvds when the picture quality isnt going to be the same as a blu ray disc and you are going to eventually get one. Get it now but DO NOT get a first generation player from a company. Get one that has had previous models because certain kinks and issues may have been fixed. Early players take longer to load and sometimes break down. THey are getting much better these days. They will be higher priced then standard dvd players for a while because they work so much better and the blu ray DVD's can hold soo much more data and are more scratch resistant. Eventually they will go down when they find cheaper but good material to build them from

Help! Blu ray player skipping?

Tonya

So I bought my mom a sony blu ray player last december and now it wants to skip on sertain disks. It first started skipping when we bought 2 blu ray discs avatar collecters addition and the host. So then we bought a cleaning disc for it and that jus made the skipping worse. So then we tried a movie (the sand pebbles) that we already had and it to was a blu ray disk and it played fine at first then when it went to the main screen and after we pressed play there was no picture only sound. So then we went to my philips player and I put the host in and it played fine. And while I was doing that my mom watched the shinning and it played fine. So the next day I brought mine out of my room and replaced it with the sony and we watched avatar on it and it played fine. But then we played the sand pebbles on my philips player at it did the same thing no picture only sound. It seems the sony player is being picky on which movies it wants to play. But what I can figure out is all the blu ray discs that skipped on the sony player worked fine on the philips player. But the only movie that still messes up on either player is the sand pebbles. What is going on with the player its never done this before unless of course if the discs had scratches. But the blu ray discs resist scratching but just in case I looked on the discs that were skipping and there were no marks on the discs. I also want to know if I messed it up with the cleaner disc? And it would be ashame that the player mess up when playing only after 2 years. Do I need a new player? or could there be something wrong with the HDMI cord? Although that wouldn't make sence because I'm using the same wire on my philips player that was used on the sony player. My philips player is older, mine is about 3 years old if not more. And it plays perfect I havnt had any problems with it what so ever. So I don't understand why mine being older is still going strong. Also I got the sony player off of amazon if that helps. Please help.

Answer
I learned a whole lot at one time from a best buy tech in my home state about this format, you needed to check the packaging on the pack you bought as to if you had the 2D disc in there, or the 3D disc in there at the time of playback.

these discs are encoded with intricate playback data which is very sensitive and much more so than a dvd because they use a blue laser hence the term blu ray. you need to be careful when cleaning these discs.

im assuming the first two were SD disc (2D disc combo packs) films with the single blu only. avatar you bought in the combo pack which i assume you did, this film was in native 3D when filmed, a 2D was created for those who could not tolerate the sterography the 3D entails.

The Phillips Blu-Ray player is intended for 2D playback, you needed to have watched the particular disc you inserted into the player because of the 3D disc to any of the movies you listed will have one of many possible outcomes: 1. error message saying you can't view it 2. refusal to play 3. being told you need the following equipment listed on the back of the combo pack: 1. 3D TV 2. active/passive shutter glasses (passive is better as it doesn't hurt) 3. PS3 4. HDMI cable at hi-speed

your discs on both of these players could be scratched, the sony you could of had as a 3D player (i assume if it is a dual mode model which plays in 2D mode if needed) could have internal damage to it.

if both are 3D/2D players they both need to be serviced and or replaced by a certified tech trained in the blu-ray format

if you are having picture/audio playback problems as well as presentation setup, you may need to buy all of it again as you are operating on defective equipment between both players.

it is time for a new player as the phillips is 2-3 years older if not more, replace the cable also. the older player is still pumping, but don't expect the strong performance for very long afterwords.

if the sony is picking and choosing what it wants, replace it as its fully defective. you will not get much performance out of it.

the sand pebbles needs to be replaced also, the disc is defective. check the packaging as to how you bought it. single disc, easy shot replacement. multi-combo pack set if it was purchased like that, you will need to throw money down on the combo again.

if they were with no marks, it is defection in the discs. you messed it up with the cleaner disc, the player has very sensitive parts which must be well maintained. the manufacturer could also have screwed up when designing the player. it could be a defective unit, that warrants whole unit replacement.

i would take your concerns in front of a tech, they are good at solving your problems. i am looking to be a first timer fairly soon.

you have a 2D setup from the looks of the question, well i would say the 2D units are harder to maintain than stereoscopic 3D units which can play both. 2D can also do both itself and 3D as well, only certain 3D discs will go past the gate though as a signal will be emitted to the player to tell it what your running, if it is a full 1080i HD 3D signal with the right equipment and parts it will accept playback, if 1080i full HD, yes and no.

on a 2D setup if you have one of the 4 parts but not the other 3 there are exceptions like piranha 3D, this will downconvert itself to create a 2D signal in 2D space on a 2D setup. the message displayed is this disc will only play in 2D without special hardware, to watch in blu-ray 3D you need a 3D tv, active shutter glasses/passive shutter glasses, and a PS3 with the latest firmware update. the only one i know of that goes past the gate.

that blu-ray 3D is an exception to this rule that only certain blu-ray 3D discs go past the gate, and again only anaglyph can go past the gate on a 2D tv. frame sequential (tech in the newer discs designed to do stereoscopic 3D) requires spending $1000+ on all the equipment.

my advice to you in the future with these is watch your display setups, watch the disc you are inserting when you are watching (these are specifically on the packages in the combos especially), watch for 2D or 3D when inserting it into the player (some 3D discs can mess up player operations as well if on a 2D setup, others can go past the gate if they downconvert to 2D like piranha 3D), and lastly be very careful with the unit and its parts, one false move and it could affect the players proper operation.

with the combos if any or all of the discs attain damage, you will need to buy any or all of the discs again if they fail on playback. BD 3D+BD 2D+DVD+DC+UV or any combination all have sensitive encodes that if damaged can affect unit operations if you're not careful.

i hope this helps you out.

3D Blu-Ray player on normal tv?

Holy Crap

I have a normal LCD 1080p tv.
If I buy a Blu ray that plays 3d movies will I be able to watch them as they were intended on my tv or do I need a 3d tv?
(I also have a plasma tv. They are both 42" if that means anything)

Any suggestions on what Blu ray I should buy?

Answer
Keep in mind to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray disc movie and 3D glasses. I just purchase an OPPO 93 blu ray disc player and it is a 3D player along with being a universal player. It is one of the very best player in the market. The price of the player is $499 (you are not going to find it for less money), I purchase my online at Audio Advisor for the price of $509.95 that includes free sales tax and free shipping. It replaced my Pioneer and Panasonic blu ray disc player for my home theater. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on the player. If the price is to high, then I would recommend the Panasonic 3D player. Hope this will help you out.

Best blue-ray player for upscaling and audio?

mike s

Just looking to get the best dvd player that will give my normal dvd's the best picture quality and the best possible audio as well, does anybody know what is supposed to have the best rating for that? THanks

Answer
The PS3 is, at best, a mediocre upscaler for DVDs. The best (reasonably priced) Blu-ray player all round are made by OPPO (See link and read reviews). Exceptional DVD upscaling, great audio and video processing (audiophile quality in the Model 95, but the 93 is excellent too), universal player (plays almost anything) ... just not the cheapest. Many believe that Panasonic makes the best "normal" Blu-ray player.

EDIT: Another response recommended not bothering to upconvert DVD. Not very useful if you have a collection of DVDs, and not acknowledging that there are big differences in how well DVDs can be upscaled. While all Blu-ray players do essentially identical jobs on blu-ray disks, there are BIG differences in how well DVDs look on different players. The Oppo and a few other Blu-ray players (some Pioneers come to mind) do a great job on DVDs. No, it's not as good as Blu-ray, but they can look pretty darn good.

Is it possible to install a Blu-Ray player in my 13 in mac book pro?

metzfan

or at least use a external player?

Answer
Definitely not, well i guess it is possible in theory, but getting the computer to accept it would be impossible. Considering Apple just refreshed the MacBook Pro line i wouldn't expect this addition until atleast next march, and thats only if they decide to do it then. Easiest option is to buy and external.

Answer
"i have a toshiba blu ray player and a jvc dvd digital cinema system can they be connected together?"

A question like this and no mention of model #s.
Ok, I found the links to your blu-ray and HTIB. I looked at the downloaded .PDF manuals, and both your units have HDMI connectivity. Get an HDMI cable from Walmart and connect this to the one HDMI output of the blu-ray, then plug the other end to the HDMI input on the JVC. You should be good to go!

Can a windows 7 computer replace a PS3 or xbox, Tivo hd, and a blu-ray and dvd player?

TOOTAl2

Answer
not really. windows 7 is able to replace your DVD player and Blu-ray player if you hook it to your television and are willing to go through the widows boot process anytime you want to watch a movie. There are DVR programs you can install that give you DVR functionality but they lack the easy interface of a dedicated TIVO. you can often find PC versions of XBOX games because they are both microsoft products but Playstation keeps a pretty tight riegn on their gaming franchises so even though you can download PS3 emulators (illegally mind you) they will never match up to using the hardware the game was designed for. If you choose to go this rought then you need a PC with Windows 7 or the new windows 8 demo version, a TV tuner card, a blu-ray drive, a PS3 emulator (again illegal), a bluetooth adaptor (for linking your PS3 and XBOX controllers), and DVR software. Your probably looking at $500-$800 depending on brand and you still would have to have a computer that has a strong enough processor and enough memory to run all of this.

Can Blu-Ray dvds play on a computer (windows vista) dvd player?

kixr

& what's the difference between blu-ray & normal dvds? thanks

Answer
Blu-ray Discs are read with a blue laser, standard DVD discs use a red laser, that is why DVD players cannot read Blu-ray Discs.

Blue lasers have a shorter wavelength and as such can read more data in a shorter narrower groove. This allows a dual layer Blu-ray Disc to store over 5 times more data than a dual layer DVD (50GB vs. 8.5GB). The technical maximum bandwidth of audio and video combined is 48 Mbps, versus DVD's 10 Mbps. Blu-ray also uses MPEG-4 and VC-1 codecs for video which are far more efficient than MPEG-2, which is the only video codec used on consumer DVD's.

Blu-ray can carry visible resolutions up to 1920x1080 @ 24Hz progressive and 1080x1080 @ 60Hz interlaced.
DVD can carry visible resolutions up to 720x576 @ 50Hz or 60Hz interlaced.

Blu-ray and DVD are completely different, so putting "DVD" after the word "Blu-ray" is incorrect.

What is the best Blu-Ray player for Netflix?

wiggum82

We recently bought a Sony Blu-Ray player (BDP-BX57) and the Netflix interface is horrible. All it has is instant que, which means you have to go to your computer to add movies to watch. There is no search option. Is it this way with every Blu-Ray player? I want a Blu-Ray player where you can use Netflix and search for movies, similar to the Wii. I also want it to be easy enough for my kids to use. What is the best Blu-Ray player for Netflix?

Is there a blu ray player that will connect wirelessly through my router and has RCA connection to my TV?

O want to be able to play Netflix and even Amazon Prime in my bedroom, and I got a Sony blu ray player, but it only has HDMI and my TV has RCA (red, white, yellow and another set with blue And other colors). I realize I can get a converter for about $35, but I think it makes more sense to get a Blu Ray player that has the right hook ups. Does it exist? Thanks!!

Answer
You can get one but the picture will not be HD and may be kinda blurry HDMI is the only cable that will carry HD....also the players tend to be expensive and also they are older models that have just not sold out yet...most made before January of 2011 when the Sunset rules took effect...like the Onkyo BDP 809 also the Cambridge Audio 752BD...also you may be able to find on with netflix but probably not Amazon Prime because Amazon Prime is a newer format and I don't think it was being offered in 2010 for Blu ray players...The newer ones that have that tend to be all region free international models and I'm not sure how a region free Blu ray player with wifi works but they do say access your movies on line??? Somehow...Also after doing some research I discovered that the region free models are older models also the newer ones only have HDMI....also it is my understanding that newer Blu ray disks may not play and that if you try and do an update it may disable your player....

Can you watch blu ray without blu ray player?

Tigerwoods

I was wondering if i downloaded a blu ray movie if i could watch it in blu ray quality. I am assuming you need a blu ray player to play blu ray discs. But do you need a blu ray player to watch blu ray downloaded media?

Answer
You should just be able to play it as you would any other kind of video on your computer. Just open it up in some sort of media viewer (Windows Media Player, VLC, e.t.c.). This is assuming that it is a digital copy, and not on a disc.

The only difference between the DATA on Blu-Ray and normal DVD's is the fact that Blu-Ray holds more. The format of the video itself should still be the same.

If you know of one, that would be awesome and greatly appreciative.
Thank you so much.
