Does a converter let you play blu rays on a DVD player?

Brian M

A friend of mine has a DVD player with a converter/adapter (he bought it at Sears). I don't want to ask him directly because he'll think I'm dumb (lol), but would this allow him to play blu rays on his DVD player? Thanks.

Answer
Absolutely not. Just like you can't covert a CD player to play DVDs.

can u play reg dvds on blu-ray dvd player?

Jana Baker

or do they have to be blu-ray dvds?

Answer
All blu ray disc players made are backward compatibility. They can play anything that was made before it. You have to look at each player either in the top or face to see what it is capable of playing, it is also in the owners manual. Hope this will help you out.

Connecting a seperate blu ray player to a blu ray/surround sound combo?

Havenwood

I bought a 3D blu ray player and I'm currently using a blu ray/surround sound. I'm wanting to connect the new blu ray up and still use the surround sound from the combo. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Answer
Your home theater in a box is not flexible for adding anything or for upgrading. It is mainly designed for you to watch a movie with the built in blu ray disc player with surround sound. They are a waste of money. Keep in mind, to watch in 3D you also need a 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc movie (at this time there are only around 140 titles available and they are mainly animated movie from disney) and you also need a 3D glasses. I would recommend you look at an Onkyo HT-S3500 to replace your home theater in a box. It is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You would connect your 3D blu ray disc player to the Onkyo and then connect the Onkyo to the tv. Demo the unit at any Fry's Electronic. It retails for around $300. If you purchase a 3D blu ray disc player, I hope you purchased a Panasonic brand. It is one of the most reliable player in the market with good reviews from Home Theater Magazine. Hope this will help you out.

Can you hook up a Blu Ray player to a Panasonic surround sound system?

Q. I'm interested in buying a Blu Ray player, but I don't want to buy a new surround sound system.
I forgot to mention that the surround sound system has a DVD player built into it.

Answer
Some entry level surround systems have few or even no audio inputs. If you want 5.1 surround, then your surround receiver would need to have an optical (or coaxial) digital audio input (and the Blu-ray player would need an audio output to match, either optical or digital).

If your surround receiver has stereo audio inputs (red and white color coded RCA inputs), then you could connect the Blu-ray player that way, but this would be 2.0 stereo, and not 5.1 surround.

If you can get the audio connected to the surround system, I am guessing you would still connect the Blu-ray player's video output directly to the TV, because your receiver probably has no video input, or at least no HD video input.

Vizio Blu-Ray player not playing "The Help"?

Rachelle09

We just purchased "The Help" in which our Vizio Blu-Ray player cannot seem to play. The disk loads, but all it comes up is a black screen. We tried exchanging it----same issue. Other Blu-Ray discs play just fine. What's going on?

Answer
You need to update the firmware in your Vizio player. Check your manual for instructions.

Look - BluRay disks are NOT simple DVD's. They are actually computer programs written in a language called "BD-Java". This is why the disks take so long to load - they have to compile the program and try to run.

Because Sony rushed BluRay into production too fast - the language has a lot of grey areas. This means new disks sometimes do not work. The Player manufacturers have to constantly update the firmware to keep up with the disks as they discover new problems.

Hope this helps.

does a vizio blu ray player need to be level?

j

My vizio vbr 334 blu ray player will not play a disc unless I hold the front of the player up until it starts. Its is a little out of level. The disc drawer just keeps opening and closing

Answer
Players should be flat on the table or cabinet. If the door keeps opening then your player needs to be repaired. With the cost of labor today, it would not be cost effective in repairing the player. Those bargain price players are not very reliable at all. I still use my first generation player from Panasonic model BD-10 which is 4 years old and have had no problems playing over 300 blu ray disc movies. Hope this will help you out.

Does Netflix have high definition streaming 1080p on blu-ray players?

Michael

my blu-ray player is Model number: BDP-S370

Answer
There is more to Blu-Ray then just 1080p which just describes the amount of pixels or resolution.

Blu-Ray sizes are usually at least 20 gigabytes and go much bigger up to 40 gigabytes. Happy Feet is 13 gigabytes though which is very small.

Even if you could download at 200 kb/s, it would take 1.16 days to download or 27.84 hours. That's just for 20 gigabytes which is on the smaller end.

DVDs are around 7-8 gigabytes. Even if you wanted to download a whole entire 7 gigabyte DVD file at 200 kb/s it would take .41 days or 10.08 hours.

The fact is, Blu-Ray is uncompressed audio and video while DVD is compressed. It's more than just 1080p.

One reason why I don't use netflix streaming is because it's going to be decently worse than DVD quality.

I'm positive how Netflix streaming works, but in some cases if there is a Blu-Ray version available for the movie they may convert that in to a MPEG or AVI file which in turn is sent to your Blu-Ray player. They have to convert a Blu-Ray or DVD in to a video file that is able to be sent to your computer.

Bare in mind your connection determines the quality. If you're capable of downlading like 4 megabytes a second you may get some really great quality feed.

What are some of the better Blu Ray players that stream Netflix?

vicjd1

Unfortunately, I currently have the super slow bd-p 1500 blu ray player and I am thinking of upgrading to get Netflix streaming. Thanks!

Answer
At the moment your choices are still somewhat limited, but that will be changing soon. If you want something _right_now_ you'll still be looking at the new Samsung models that load considerably faster. The BDP 1600, which replaced the 1500 model, or there is always a higher up/more expensive Samsung you could get. Or you could go with an LG. I think the Samsung would be a better choice. You could find a 1600 on Ebay for about $185. Walmart sells (online) the model 1590 which is basically a 1600 with a slightly different face to it and sells for $50 less than the 1600 in the stores. They sell for about the same in Ebay.
However, Sony just announced that they will start selling next month a new player that will stream Netflix once they have a firmware upgrade ready later this fall. ($250) No reviews yet on that model as it has just barely been announced. It will probably be similar to their 360 model or perhaps a bit better.

Are DVD's going out of style now that Blu-Ray is around?

Sally Cat

I went to ebay to sell some of my old DVD's now that I have Blu-Ray and plan to upgrade some of them. However, I see DVD's as good as Spiderman and Inception selling for as low as $1 on ebay! For $1 I might as well just give it to a friend of mine lol.

So I'm going to assume DVD's are going downhill big time? If so, why are the retail prices still high for DVD's? I work at Kmart and someone purchased a DVD movie for $25.

Answer
Yes, DVDs are becoming the way of the past. Based upon how quickly the U.S. switched from cassette to CD, and from VHS to DVD, Blu-ray should become the primary media of home theater by about 2018. People don't think about it, but DVD's are already on their way out. When you walk into a retail store the shelf space that used to be entirely DVD movies and DVD players, is now being slower replaced by Blu-ray discs and players.

Also, not all movies have been re-released on Blu-ray yet, as as such the retail stores still charge premium pricing on these rather than the lower pricing that we generally see when both the Blu-ray and DVD versions are readily available.

Do people line up for KMART Thanksgiving Day sale that starts at 7am?

tweetys_01

I am wanting to get the Sony Blu Ray DVD player that is on sale for $180 and I was wondering if people wait outside for the store to open on Thanksgiving Day like on Black Friday. If they do what time should I get there? Thanks in advance.

Answer
You better believe it! I like to go to the day after Thanksgiving sales too. A group of us ladies gets up at 4:30 a.m. and goes to another ladies house for coffee and rolls and we look thru the ads and schedule where we will go when depending on when different stores open and we have a large vehicle we fill up a couple of times and have to have one ladies husband come and unload it and take it home so we can keep shopping without having to return home. We spend about 16 or 17 hours on the road between our town and several towns close to us.

What is the best Blu-Ray player for a 720p tv?

Eight Bit

What type of player should I be trying to get.

Answer
LG and Panasonic tend to be the higher rated brands.

You have 3 different levels of players to choose from:

* Basic players
* 'Smart' players with wireless that include streaming services
* 3D players

Unless you have a 3D television, I recommend you purchase just a good basic player. If you decide you want 'smart' features, look into a small media server like the WD TV Live box for $99. This has more apps than any BluRay player, gets updated more frequently and in general works a lot better than the apps "added in" to a player.

Try www.bestblueraydeals.com for Amazon vendors who offer slight discounts.

For an HDMI cable, I like the "Media Bridge" brand from Amazon. Prices run $9-$20 depending on length.

Hope this helps.

I'm looking to buy a Blu-Ray Player for around $150 price range. Am I better off buying a 3d ready one?

mysticmodz

3D vs a normal Blu-Ray. Looking to stick around $150 price range, and buy at a brick and mortar store. Should I just buy the 3D ready Blu-Ray player now, or am I better off waiting? Will I need to buy a 3D capable TV in order to get use from the 3D Blu-Ray player? This is the one I'm considering.... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+3D/Internet+Connectable/Wi-Fi+Ready+Blu-ray+Disc+Player/9754669.p?id=1218167391755&skuId=9754669

Answer
Why not? The difference in price is minimal but if you buy a 3D TV in the future your going to have to replace the whole thing. Make sure you get a Blu-Ray with wifi installed. The rip-off is the $80 wireless adapter you have to buy separately if you buy a wifi-(ready) player

With this one at Bestbuy you'll have all your bases covered for just $30 more. Sony BDP-S570

Can I do this with a Blu-Ray Disc ?

ROBO731

I am planning on writing several files to a rewritable blu-ray disc. I am wondering:

1) I want to add files to the disc almost every week (if this is not possible I can do it every couple months). How many times can I add files to the disc?

2) Can my computer write to a blu-ray Disc? It is a Dell Inspiron N7110 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The disc drive is called BD-Rom and has a Blu-ray symbol on the side.

3) Can I add MKV (matroska) files to the disc?

4) If I add MKV's to the disc will a blu-ray player and PS3 be able to read them? If not, What filetypes can a these players read?

I will probably come up with even more questions after I post this, but please answer all or as many of them as you can. Any help will be appreciated.

Answer
Blu ray disc is just a larger container for data versus say a blank DVD. You can put any kind of file on it that you want, in any format.

You can add files to a disc from time to time, but it has to be a rewriteable version of blu ray, not just a write once BD-R. I believe it's called BD-RE.

Your blu ray drive is most likely only for reading blu ray, not writing/burning. ROM is read only memory. So you'll have to buy another blu ray disc drive that can write to a disc.

Blu Ray Disc burning space needed?

Octavio

How much computer space is needed to be able to burn Blu Ray disc on a computer? I have 2 GB, is that enough? Also upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit to the 64 bit version will it improve the image quality of anything done on the computer? For example gaming or movie watching using the windows media player.

Answer
I'm gathering that you mean you have 2GB of RAM as opposed to 2GB of hard disk space remaining. If you have 2GB of RAM, you'll be OK, if you have 2GB of hard disk space left, you are in trouble and Windows is likely yelling at you as we speak.

Now for the Blu-Ray issue. 2GB of RAM should be plenty to burn Blu-Ray disks. A 32 bit OS can only recognize 3GB of RAM anyway.

Updgrading to a 64bit OS is a personal choice. The OS may run better and be more stable (it will also recognize much more RAM if you feel like upgrading from 2GB). However, unless your applications are 64-bit, you won't see much improvement, if any, in their performance. They will still run in 32-bit mode.

If Windows Media Player is your player of choice, then using the 64-bit version in a 64-bit OS may be a good idea, but I don't think it will change the appearance or viewing experience. As long as you have enough RAM, which you do, and your PC is running a current generation processor, you should be fine.

In short, I wouldn't spend a bunch of money chasing a 64-bit OS for an unknown amount of improvement. Unless, as I said earlier, you have other applications that are optimized for 64-bit processing.

So anyway we went to there site and registered the blu ray player. So now we can get to netflix instant watch on our TV however it only shows 10 instant watch titles. How do we get more?? There are tons of them we can get to on our computer but only those 10 on our TV. Anyway any help as to how to get more or why we cant, would be appreciated :). Thanks

xbox 360 or blu ray player?

Green

I cant decide which to get. Heres what id like.
Netflix
Tv
Hulu
Exercise videos
Maybe some games if i were to get an xbox but nothing like halo etc.
Internet
Mostly just more things to do on my tv than just laptop or tablet
I do have wifi
I have access to a xbox 360 4gb but is that worth it? Because i know the 250gb is a lot better.
I know i can get netflix on xbox but then again on blu ray i can do internet and dvds.
Im kind of leaning toward the blu ray for the uses but i can basically get the xbox 4gb for free from my work.
What do you think?

Answer
Well, With A xbox and a blu ray player you can get all of those features. (Except the games which is for xbox) But on xbox ( if you plan on playing with other people) you have to pay money to play online with other people. But it doesn't cost money to get netflix and Hulu, But you have to pay a bill every month for them both to use the services. You also said that you can get the xbox for free at your job, I think go get the xbox cause it will save you a few bucks.

how do i get netflix to work on my Sony bdp-bx58 blu-ray player.?

jennifer

it keeps telling me there is a network error. everything works except netflix. there is nothing wrong with my internet connection. I can open netflix on my tablet and my laptop...just not this new player. thank you in advance for any help in this matter

Answer
Have you gone into the settings a found out the code for your unit. You have to activate your player
if you have done all this then maybe your player is not WIFI and it needs a cable connected to it to operate If if is saying that the network is not available then most likely your player is not WIFI check owners manual then try to run cable from modem to you player..

Wifi blu-ray player or roku? Which is better for netflix?

Laura

Answer
That depends on what you want. If picture quality is of the utmost importance to you, get the Roku 2 XD or XS. Those two along with PS3 are the only home devices that are capable of delivering a 1080p stream from Netflix.

why to choose XBOX 360 over PS3 ?

THe 23rd S

I want XOBX 360 for the HALO ,controller and XBL but there is a buzz that the XBOX 720 will soon hit the market by the end of 2013 , that will make my XBOX 360 old and outdated not on the day of the release but after some months of the release , so what I decided is to buy PS3 but again the questions in my mind "ONLINE" , is the online service by the SONY PSN that badd\? , does it really go lag and hacked very often ? .......... people say that sony's life is higher and it is more dureable than the XBOX 360 and of course the SONY has said that the PS3's life will be of 10 years .
SHOULD I GO FOR XBOX 360 FOR HALO .......... IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE OF HALO IN THE PS3 ? EXCLUSIVE GAMES OF PS3 LIKE UNCHARTED , GOD OF WAR , LITTLE BIGPLANET 2(:P) BETTER THAN THE EXCLUSIVE GAMES OF XBOX 360 ? ........ AND WHAT ABOUT HE LIBRARY OF THE PS3 AND XBOX 360 WHICH SYSTEM HAS A GOOD LIBRARY ?

Answer
Ps3 is the clear winner in overall performance and hardware.

Review from an Owner of Both Consoles, should help you out on this decision:

http://budurl.com/PS3XBox

Killzone 3 is a good alternative plus there is a long list of exclusives on PS3 like:

- Uncharted 3
- inFamous 2
- Metal gear solid 4
- Twisted metal
- Little big planet 2
- Resistance 3

The pros for PS3 Over Xbox:

- Free online
- Blu ray dvd player
- Long line of exclusives (Better gaming library)
- Better graphics
- Free movie downloading
- Better for any multimedia stuff

The PSN service is fine... It would lag only if you have a bad connection.. (same as xbox)

Should I watch Star Trek again?

I watched em all last year. It's been a year. I loved them 1 year ago is the first time I watched startrek.
I'm talking about the TV shows.

I started with TNG (It was on Netflix)
then Loved it so I went to there website and found more.
I watched Voyager and then The Original series. I found out there was a Animated series I watched that too. This all took place in a month, And I have a above avarage memory so If I watch a episode I will likley remember how it all panned out. Reason I ask, I have depleted all TV shows. I litrally spent months watching everyhour. So Reccomend me a TV show or film and I will tell you I know of it and either hate the idea or watched it.
(I'm not really a couch patato, it's just that I spend most of my time on the computer doing that and I don't own a TV) Who needs a TV? it's 2013.

10 hours a day have been filled with every imaginable interesting film from recreation watching - scientific research
I have seen Dilbert (Anime newyork TV SHOW, ITS FUNNNY) - Personal videos detailing lectures on Physics and space travel.

I am a brilliant mind so I avoid shit like Vampire diaries.. I want the serious-funny and deep inttelectual shit.
?
Oh wait sorry, I forgot to mention those. I did watch them unfortunetly. Anything else?
Plz thank you
Fringe is a big NO NO. That show is in the same catogory as the Vampire diares.
I'm a scientist soo I can't spend 1 hour looking at people talking about magic.
MI-5 Seems interesting, I should have mentiond I LOVE shows like:
Nikita
24
and these on the funny side
Monk
Bones

But like I said, I depleted all my TV show reserves.

Answer
Like the other guy said, watch Babylon 5 (but skip the movies and season 5). It's much more realistic than the Star Trek series. Also: Firefly. It only lasted 1 season but it's still worth the watch.

(Re)watch the X-Files. It tries to be serious, but its funny as well. And really, you can't take that stuff seriously anyway.

Funny? The Big Bang Theory, Arrested Development & It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But I'm sure you've already seen them.

You might like things like House, The Wire, The West Wing, Entourage, Prison Break and Dexter. I'm been told that Castle is similar to Bones; however it has little science. Not like Bones has had much believable science lately anyway. Breaking Bad is one you'll either love or hate. I hated it. You might like it since I seem to be in the minority.

If you like historical pieces, look into Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Rome. Keep in mind that while Game of Thrones is based in a fantasy world, it is a very very strong basis in actual history. Read about the people of England around the War of the Roses: most of the ridiculous events are based on fact. Downton Abbey has also had good reviews, though I haven't sat down to watch it yet.

The most recent show I watched might fit the bill too: White Collar. It's on USA, and seems to have been based off of Frank Abignale Jr. just like the film Catch Me If You Can. It's about a con artist teaming up with the FBI - serious crimes/tone with quite a few hilarious moments. It isn't always realistic, but it's definitely entertaining.

Finally, not all 'supernatural' shows are bad. The first couple seasons of BBC's Being Human is not really about the fact that the characters are a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf. It's about themes like addiction, and alienation: the supernatural is used as a literary device. Same goes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sure, there's metaphysical fluff in there, but it's essentially a coming of age story with the first strong female lead since Wonder Woman. You can also see what put Bones' Seely Booth on the map: he was discovered for this show. It isn't intellectual, but it fits the serious-funny bit especially later on when the tone shifts darker.

-------
As an aside: why wouldn't you own a TV? Get a blu-ray player or something else with DLNA (like a PS3, media player or Smart TV), pop Serviio on your PC and stream everything to your widescreen. I do, and I'll never go back to watching shows on my PC again.

What Formats Can Blu-ray Players Play?

Psychopath

I have a friend who burned the entire Doctor Who show from beginning to last episode, and at one point I was watching them on my xbox, but the earlier episodes seem to be in AVI file format. He said his family watches them on their Blu-ray player, and I was just wondering do all Blu-ray players play ordinary file formats or do you have to have a special brand or model and if so what brand/model?

Answer
All Blu-Ray players can play Blu-Rays, DVDs, and audio CDs. Most of the players from big name brands can also play other formats including AVIs, MP3s (for music), Photo CDs, VCDs, etc. Just check the specs or look on the box and it'll be spelled out.

But compatibility with these other formats may not be 100%, especially for formats that have a lot of variation such as AVI - for instance AVI can use one of dozens of different video and audio formats, and you can't expect a player to be able to handle all of them.

Is it true that all Blu-ray players play DVDs aswell?

whatoneart

And do blu-ray discs make a difference on standard definition tvs?

Answer
Yes blu ray players play standard DVDs.

If you've got an SD TV then either your PS3/Blu Ray player won't be hooked up with a HDMI cable, so the blu ray won't look any better than a DVD as your TV doesn't support the full HD (1080i) or HD ready (720i) picture quality. Standard TV picture quality is 580p, which is what your Blu Rays will play as.

Why won't certain Netflix shows play on my Sony Blu Ray player?

SC

It's not all shows, just certain ones (Torchwood and Doctor Who, for example). I get sound, but a messed up line-y scrambled picture. Other shows & movies play perfectly. These SAME shows play perfectly on my Wii (though I only have composite cables for it right now, so the picture quality is less than optimal).

I do the updates on my Blu Ray player frequently, and it's up to date now. I tried removing the Netflix account and re-adding it, no luck. I'm using an HDMI cable between my Sony TV and the Blu Ray, and it's hard-wired to my router by ethernet, not wireless.

Any ideas? I've run out.
@PoohBearPenguin - I have FiOS with 35mbps/35mbps, so I don't think bandwidth is the problem. It still happens even when nothing else at all is using our network. I'll look into the HD/SD settings, I wasn't aware they did that. Also thought about trying a component cable just for kicks to see if that makes any difference (though I don't expect it to).

Answer
Could be an issue with netflix, I had a problem with star trek voyager, it would play on the pc but not the ps3. So I called netflix and they told me it was an issue on their own end and the fixed it.

Why does my Blu-Ray player's Netflix Instant look awful?

Sketch

I bought an RCA BRC 11082 Blu-Ray player recently, noticing that it had Netflix Instant. For some reason however, all Netflix movies play in very low resolution. I have a terrific internet connection and an HDMI cord hooked up. Netflix Instant movies looked great on my X-Box and usually played in HD. Was I wrong to assume a blu-ray player should play Netflix in HD? Did I get a lousy blu-ray player?

How can I resolve this?

Answer
You already have it resolved because you have your x_box which you said Netflix Instant looks great on.

I don't have an X-Box, but I know people that stream Netflix via their Bluray player, X-box, Wii (non-HD) and PS3.

Seeing Netflix instant on all these platforms, I can tell you the pic is not always great. If the resolution sucks, blame Netflix, not the player. Streaming video often has lowered resolution that the hardware is capable of in order to give the user improved playback (no lag, glitching).

Your Bluray player is only a lousy Bluray player if it doesn't play Blurays.

I mean, c'mon...Netflix is even streaming to phones now. Your Bluray player should be judged on its disc playback and not its Netflix streaming ability.

My speaker set up came with these cables

http://www.vminnovations.com/sys/resource.ashx?guid=a38527c287164af79f2d2dde25785d28

And lastly do i have to hook the audio from each device (xbox 360, tv, dvd player, etc) to the receiver? or can i hook all devices to the tv and then send the sound to the receiver through the tv?
This is a list of inputs and outputs on my tv
2 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A) - Side,
1 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A) - Rear,
1 x VGA input (15 pin D-Sub (DB-15)) - Side,
1 x Composite video / component video input (RCA phono x 3) - Rear,
1 x Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2) - Rear,
1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) (RCA phono) - Rear,
1 x Headphones (Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm) - Side,
1 x USB (4 pin USB Type A) - Side

If i do have to plug in audio to the receiver, would i be able to have both the hdmi cable going to the tv while also having audio only cables going to the receiver? or would that not work?

Thank you for reading all of this, and especially thank you if you can help me. I know this is a lot of stuff, but there are so many different ways i could be messing it up that i need to know the exact right way to do it for it to work.and i (obviously) have no idea what i am doing ahah
Sorry for such a long question and i hope someone can help :)
Thank You!!!!

Answer
First off the VM Audio sub-woofer is incompatible with the Pioneer VSX D457 Receiver, they will not work together...you may be able to use the Satellite speakers if they are 8 ohm with the Pioneer VSX D457 next you do not have any digital connections on that receiver so you are only going to get stereo at best the Pioneer VSX D457 has Dolby prologic which is an analog 4.0 system and can be used to produce a psudo-surround from stereo. Dolby Pro-logic makes no provisions for a sub-woofer....some high end prologic receivers did there own sub-woofer provisions as aftermarket unfortunately your D457 is not one of them, so there is no provision for a subwoofer of any kind...also you will not be able to use a blu ray player with any satisfaction in surround...you would hook everything up to the TV then run a cord from the headphone jack out to the receiver for stereo sound nd then use prologic to produce a pseudo surround effect.
It may be best to leave the Pioneer VSX receiver out completely and just hook the VM Audio speaker system up directly to the TV.....

do i need a compatible tv AND a compatible blu-ray player to download amazon prime movies?

greenfrogs

Answer
I think you will just need a HD TV or a computer you'll be able to watch the instant/streamed video from Amazon Prime.
A Blu-ray player is only required when you play the physical Blu-ray discs.

Do you need Blu Ray Player to use Netflix?

Steven

Please be descriptive with your answer and how netflix works to be considered for best answer

Answer
No, you don't need a blu ray player. There are different ways you can stream things instantly from netflix. One way is through your computer, where you just go to netflix on your computer, type in what you want to watch, and if it comes instantly, just click play and you can watch it on a computer, the only requirment being that you need internet or wifi. You can also stream through the wii. To do this, you will need to download the netflix channel, which is free in the channel store, which is already installed in the wii. Your wii will also need to be hooked up to the internet via wifi. There are also other streaming devices through which you can get netflix, such as the roku box from amazon. This is a small box that needs to be hooked up via wifi, and you download the netflix channel from the channel store for free. Roku also has other channel options, such as the amazon instant video channel, where you can rent of buy movies to be streamed to your tv.

Do region free blu ray players also play any sort of DVD?

Elizabeth

I want to buy the new Hollow Crown DVD but I don't to wait a year. Also I want a Blu ray player b.c I need one lol. I know that Blu ray can play DVD but can region free also play DVD?

Answer
It depends on the player and on how far the unlocking goes...

You can buy a Blu-ray player that is unlocked for DVD only. This will play any region locked DVDs (codes 1~6), but it will only play Blu-rays for the zone you live in, i.e. Zone A - American continent, Zone B - Europe, etc. So, a player unlocked like this would play DVDs from around so you could buy the Hollow Crown DVD and play it.

Buying a fully unlocked Blu-ray player (Any Blu-ray zone + any DVD region) is possible but it is very expensive.

The alternative is to use a PC and some copy software to make a back-up disc that plays without having to worry about regions or zones. Google is your friend :-)

american blu ray, european ps3?

HAZE

I have star trek original series 1 on blu-ray that I won in the usa. I was wondering if it will work on my ps3. I haven't opened the box yet, as if it doesn't work, I intend on selling it.

Answer
I'm guessing that you are living outside of North or South America...

If so, you have to know that Blu-Ray discs are geographically zoned and most likely you are in a different zone, so you won't be able to read your American Blu-Ray.

I was told that the technology to de-zone a Blu-Ray player does not exist yet (but will eventually come out someday).

Blu-ray player - questions?

Thirzty

The box says "requires broadband connection, fees may apply, requires external storage"

what fees would apply? are they just talking bout the fees i pay for comcast?

what is the external storage, and why would i need that?

and can someone explain wat BDLive is?
wat kind of external storage.....

Answer
Broadband connection is required because the Blu-ray is a java. It needs to be update, Like a game.
However updating it will need the "external storage" to store the updates.

It has nothing to do with you cable provider.

BD Live is nothing.. Just something cool to browse around. BDLive is like Xbox Live..
A online version for blu ray..

Should I Get A Blu-Ray Player?

Nathaniel

I've been wanting a blu-ray player for awhile but I'm really wanting to get the transformers signature edition (which I'm pretty sure is only blu-ray). Is a blu-ray player really worth it or should I just get the regular collectors edition? Also is the signature edition the same as just haven all 3 transformers speicial edition? Thanks for the help!!
ADD ON: I already have a 360 and A LOT of games (around 20) and I really don't want to get rid of it.

Answer
Well DVD's contain 70 year old standard def video so a BluRay player with a BluRay disk is a MAJOR improvement in video quality.

People have predicted that 'streaming' will replace disk-based use in the future so spending a bit more on a BluRay player that includes Netflix, Hulu, . streaming services might be a good investment.

Try www.bestbluraydeals.com for good prices from Amazon vendors.

"Anyone who says that PS3 is the best choice for a blu ray player is an idiot."

Lance - with respect the PS3 used to be the Gold Standard of BluRay players. There are several reasons for this:

* BluRay disks are really software programs written in BD-Java and processing the video takes some CPU horsepower. With the 3 cell-processors in the PS3 it has a massive engine to use which is why for several years it was one of the best BluRay players available.

* BluRay is backed by Sony and they make it a high-priority to keep the PS3 updated with all the latest firmware to fix problems. They have a major investment in the format so the PS3 firmware fix's and updates are fast and well-tested before they hit the consumer.

(Do not get me wrong - I am not a Sony Fan-Boy and I do not own a PS3. But I do have to respect the hardware.)

We are now in about the 4th generation of chipsets used in BluRay players and for HDMI connections so a $99 name-brand BluRay player can now rival the image quality of the PS3. You no longer have to spend $299 (or $499 for the Oppo player) to get a great HD image from this format.

Hope this helps.

Advice for buying a Blu-Ray player?

Kismet

I'm planning on buying a Blu-ray player but am confused as to what to look for. I've looked at a couple on Amazon and Walmart but would like to know what I should be looking for in a Blu-ray player.

Answer
These days its more about features than anything else. What do you want it to be able to do? Some for example can connect to the internet via wi-fi. This can be really handy if you don't have an easy way to get a wire from the player to your router. Having it connected to the internet is nice because then you can stream movies, connect with an netflix account etc. Make sure it is wi-fi built in, many of them say wi-fi but look closely, it may just say wi-fi ready. Make sure it is built in.

If you are interested in any particular formats make sure it includes everything you want. For example I have CD's compressed with FLAC, I like playing SACD's etc. If you have an interest in any particular format like this just make sure the player you get supports it.

Other than the above, there doesn't seem to be much difference in the cheap ones. If you want to spend more money you could get the Oppo for about $500 and get better quality but if you are shopping in the below $200 market I would say anything that has the features you want will work fine.

do i need to buy a blu ray player?

Anthony

ok I got a laptop http://www.walmart.com/ip/Toshiba-L675D-S7015/14335614 and I just bought a new tv at walmart.com http://www.walmart.com/ip/LD4068/15522301 my question is since my laptop can play blu ray discs and my tv is a 1080p output could i just connect my laptop to my tv and get the same quality as a bluray player? thanks :)
I dont have a ps3 cuz i dont really play video games.

Answer
You can connect the laptop to your TV to play blu-rays in 1080p IF - and only IF - your laptop has a HDMI output port on it that is HDCP compliant. HDCP is the copy protection they use on blu-ray movies. If the HDMI port doesn't support this, you can still play blu-ray discs, but they'll be downscaled to DVD resolution and won't look quite as good on your TV.

I couldn't tell for sure if this was the case with your laptop or not just looking at Walmart's webpage. Most laptops that do have a HDMI port also support HDCP.

If the laptop has a HDMI port, just buy a standard cheap HDMI cable. It shouldn't cost you more than $5-10 in a store. Check your laptop's manual on connecting the laptop to a TV for details, like if the laptop requires a separate audio cable or not.

I did a system recovery on my laptop and now I have no Operating System! Help?

Q. I have a Sony Vaio VPCEA25FX E-Series Laptop.
Had Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard Drive is 500GB
2GB of RAM
ATI Premium Radeon Graphics Card
Blu-Ray Disk Player
Intel Core i3 Processor

I wanted to restore the laptop to the its fatcory default, so that I could name it and alter every setting the way i liked (Someone had owned it before me). So, I used the 3 recovery disks made special for my laptop (They were simply burned onto DVD discs by the last owner). I went through the process of wiping the Hard Drive Clean, and then I went to Full System Restore. It formats, and then begins to restore. Disc one goes to 27%, and ejects, asking for disc two. Disk two only puts it up to 28%. The third and final disk raises it to 37% (all of this over time of course) and it stays at 37% for a while before it pops up with an error message. The error code is "Error: 320". I've tried to look this up and did not find results. Right now if it is started up without a recovery disk it shows a black screen and simply says "Operating System not found".

I've asked many friends and other Computer-savvy people.

It seems to have come to this: The problem is most likely the recovery disks themselves. The laptop was working fine before I started wiping and restoring, so I don't think that is the issue.

The solution, what do I do? Is there a way to get new disks for my specific laptop? I may have the option of getting a free Windows 7 from a website from school, but are there any complications between restoring or getting a new installation of the same operatig system? I backed up a few files I wanted to keep before I started this wipe/recover.

What are your thoughts, do you have any solutions? All help is appreciated. My laptop is extremely important to me and I would very much like it to work again...

Thanks if you actually read all of this and are going to help.

Answer
You're better off with a fresh version of windows anyway. Why would you want all the bloat-ware they pre-install on a computer?

Broken CD/DVD drive on a laptop?

Kate

I was trying to burn a CD in iTunes last night when I realized something was wrong. It "burned" the CD, or at least said it did, but when I went to play it back in iTunes it was just a bunch of static. When I took the CD out and put it back in to play it on another program, it said the CD was blank. I tried using another CD and burning it on a different program, thinking maybe iTunes was the problem, and it also said the CD was finished burning and it ejected the CD. I put it back in and went to play it and again my laptop said it was blank. So I put in a regular CD that I bought from the store and my computer automatically picked that up and began to play it in iTunes. I tried putting in a DVD and my computer also recognized that. Then I tried putting in a burned DVD and a burned CD that I know work because I've watched them on my Blu-ray player and my laptop many times before. Both the burned DVD and CD kept saying they were blank. However, if I put the same CD in iTunes and tried to burn music on it, it said it wasn't blank. So basically, my CD/DVD drive is only reading actual CDs and DVDs and is not reading any burned discs at all. It won't allow me to burn any either. I tried all different brands of burned and blank CDs and DVDs and none work. The drive is updated, showing up in device manager and I uninstalled and reinstalled. So is it broken and needs to be replaced? How much would it cost to replace it? Thank you.
I've had my laptop for two years, but I know it just recently did this. I burned a CD around Christmas time and it was working fine. This is the first time I've tried to burn one since then. I thought it was a Windows Update, but the problem is that my settings got switched to automatic, so the restore point is right at that time. I can't go back any further. Would it be better for me to just buy an external one? Do they work as well and do all the same things? Burning, playing, and copying?

Answer
Normally CD/DVD writer are working very nice one year only, I think your writer may be 1 year old, So you should replace your CD/DVD writer...

Looking for customer reviews for Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player?

Where can I find reviews and opinions online for Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value player, March 17, 2009
By tmark (Columbus, Ohio USA)
This is a good value for a blu-ray player with the new online features available such as Netflix, Pandora, and BD-Live. It is small and easy to install and setup. I use the HDMI output to my Samsung HDTV and the Optical Digital Audio output to my AV receiver. The Anynet+ feature is convenient which helps the Samsung components work together reducing button pushing. I hooked up an ethernet cable and easily got it online and setup with my pre-existing accounts with Netflix and Pandora. I've read BD-Live requires a USB 1GB flash drive. I have download cable modem speeds in 6MB/s range so the picture quality is very good from Netflix, I'd say equivalent to upconverted DVD quality. Audio quality from Pandora is also excellent and the commercial-free music service is supreme. Blu-ray DVDs look fantastic and upconverted standard DVDs look great too. This does not have the higher-end HQV chip to my knowledge. The face pushbutton interface is cool and has a high-tech feel to it. Load time is very fast - about 8 to 10s. The menus look good and are easy to navigate. No complaints here. I'm very pleased getting all these features for entry level money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sucks, March 21, 2009
By Nicholas Gemas (Lawrence, KS)
I purchased the Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray player the other night at a "big box" retailer. For the first 24 hours, it performed flawlessly. But starting on the second night, it started having weird problems.

First, the remote control stopped working for no apparent reason. The batteries in the remote control were brand-new lithium rechargeables (fully charged), so they weren't the issue. Then the player completely locked up (while playing a standard DVD) and would not respond to manually touching the controls on the front panel of the unit.

The front panel of the player swings open, and underneath it are six touch-sensitive controls (eject, play/pause, power, etc.). These aren't buttons that you press, they're merely something you run your finger over. All six of these front controls became unresponsive. I want to reiterate that the player completely locked up (while still playing the DVD) and would not power on, off, or eject the disk.

This all happened during normal conditions while playing a standard DVD. Since the controls on the front panel aren't actual buttons, I had to physically disconnect the unit from the power outlet in order to restart it.

I thought this was all some kind of one-time anomaly, so I inserted a different standard DVD into the player, and after 30 minutes, it starting doing this all over again. First the remote control became unresponsive, then the front controls on the unit stopped working, then I had to (once again) unplug the unit to get my disk back.

This player is going back to the store ASAP. This is the third time I've owned problematic Samsung equipment.

Considering the frustration of having this brand-new player not work correctly, and the time and effort spent in returning it, I definitely will not be buying another Samsung product again.

(I want to add a footnote about how shoddily-made these new Samsung products have been. My old plasma TV, an upconverting DVD player and this new Blu-ray player were all made by Samsung, and all have had major problems with construction and engineering (especially the TV). They really felt/feel cheap, especially compared to similar products being made by Sony and Panasonic. Just my $.02 worth.)

Can a DVD play 1080p material off a blu ray player?

Daniel

So let's say I burned a 1080p HD mkv video of about 3.4 gigabytes to a DVD-R that can hold 4.7 gigabytes. If I tried to play that DVD on a blu ray player would it retain its quality or would it automatically be lowered to 480p for some reason?

Answer
The Blue Ray player can deal with regular single layer (4.7 gig) or double layer (8.5 gig) blank DVDs that have a video file the Blue Ray player can understand. Like MTS files with AVCHD compressed video in them.

Since the Blue Ray player cannot understand what an MKV file type is, the Blue Ray player will not be able to play that video. The resolution (480 standard definition or 1080 high definition) is irrelevant.

is the new xbox 360 slim a blu-ray player?

Kristy

Answer
what is this xbox, i am amish, how much do i need to feed it, i just bought an internet

Should I Get an XBox 360 Elite or a PS3 Slim?

Q. and i'm talking in terms of price and quality. thank you.
ok, i think i've decided, but with the Xbox 360 do i HAVE to have xbox live? like after the free month of xbox live do i have to pay? plz answer this too

Answer
Aren't you forgetting the new Xbox 360?
-----
Anyway, I swear to god that the Xbox 360 is the better than the PlayStation 3.
-----
The PlayStation 3's exclusives focuses more on the graphics and the story and less on the gameplay. While the Xbox 360's exclusives does focus on the gameplay. It's true that the PlayStation 3 has better graphics, but that only applies to the exclusives like, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and a few cross-platform games like, Final Fantasy XIII.
-----
Also, even though you have to pay, the online is better on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3 due to less lag, most players using a headset (Watch out for the annoying children), being quick and easy way to meet up with your friends, earlier DLC, earlier add-on's and the achievements.

Also, the PlayStation 3 is more expensive than the Xbox 360, due to the Blu-Ray (Who cares) and free online.

But, Microsoft added a free month of Xbox LIVE gold into brand-new consoles for a good reason, because you may never know, after a straight 2 months playing online on PlayStation Network, you might get bored and then you'll notice that the extra price for the PlayStation 3 compared to the Xbox 360 is not worth it.

Also, if you were happy with the free month of playing online on Xbox LIVE, you could always buy a year of Xbox LIVE gold, and even though you pay, the Xbox 360 will still be cheaper than the PlayStation 3, just be sure to use the membership wisely, specifically 75%+ of it.
-----
Also, the Xbox 360 controller is better in many ways, because the triggers are better, it has a better button layout, the sticks are more easier to hold on to and it's more comfortable. The only bad thing is that the Xbox 360 controller doesn't have a built-in rechargeable battery pack, you'll have to buy rechargeable batteries and a charger for them, and again, even if you buy it, the Xbox 360 will be cheaper than the PlayStation 3.

The Xbox 360 controller is great for first-person shooters, third-person/stealth shooters, adventure, sandbox and racing games.

The PlayStation 3 controller is too small and the triggers are horrible because of the bottom of it, plus, your thumbs can sometimes slip off the stick because the stick is curved. The good thing about it is that it has a built-in rechargeable battery pack, though I'm not sure if it lasts forever.

The PlayStation 3 controller is great for RPG's and fighting games.
-----
Most cross-platform games runs and plays better on the Xbox 360 due to better controls, better online, slightly better graphics, smoother speed and achievements.
-----
Pros - Xbox 360:

-Better online (Less lag and more people with headsets)
-Better exclusives (In my opinion)
-Cross-platform games play and run better on the Xbox 360
-Better controller
-Kinect
-Cheaper
-Achievements
-Free headset
-Earlier and better DLC

Cons - Xbox 360:

-You have to pay to play online and to use a few Xbox LIVE features like: Facebook and Twitter
-You'll find lots of annoying children screaming and cussing on Xbox LIVE, mostly on Halo 3 and even worse, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Pros - PlayStation 3:

-Free online gameplay
-Ultimate graphics that almost matches the real world (Only on Sony exclusives)
-3D compatibility coming soon to the PlayStation 3 (Requires a 3D-ready TV and a PlayStation 3 game with 3D support)

Cons - PlayStation 3:

-Trophies
-Expensive
-PlayStation Move (A rip-off of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk)
-Not many people own a headset (Zipper Interactive should have released M.A.G. for the Xbox 360 instead)
-Exclusives mainly focus on the graphics and story and not gameplay
-Late DLC
-----
EDIT: You can get the free month of Xbox LIVE first, then once it's finished, then you'll have to pay for Xbox LIVE. I recommend the 12-month card.

I'm seeing conflicting answers to this, will the PS3 play a Blu-Ray disc that is region free?

GH

I've found some titles on amazon.co.uk that are not available in Canada (or North America for that matter) and would like to buy them. These are not locked to the Europe region B/2, they are region free movies. I'm fairly sure these are made to work in any player, but just want to double-check.

Answer
Zone Free discs should play in any BD player.

Will a Samsung DVD player connect to ALL Samsung TVs?

Lila

I want to buy a Samsung- Dvd-C360 - All Region Free Multi Zone Progressive Scan Dvd & Cd Player With Divx - Plays Dvds From Any Country Or Region(0-6) over Amazon, but I'm not sure if it'll connect with the TV. I am SEVERELY technologically challenged. Should I worry if the DVD player and TV won't be compatible?

Answer
Yes it will work. But getting a dvd player these days will be just a waste of money in the long run. Dvds are becoming outdated. So get a bluray player.

This bluray player can upscale dvd movies to near blu ray quality. And it will compatible with any samsung brand tv or any hdtv.

After purchase, you will be covered with amazon satisfaction guarantee. So you can return it easily if it's not compatible. But it WILL BE compatible with samsung tvs.

Will my Laptop work good as a Blu-Ray Player?

Austyn C

Im wondering if I hook my laptop to the TV im about to get if it will play blu-ray movies as good as a Blu-Ray Player will.
And can my Graphics card play blu-rays at 120HZ in 1080P?
I will be using an HDMI 1.3 Cable to connect them togather.

My laptop is the HP dv7
Intel i5-460M 2.53GHz (2.8GHz TurboBoost)
ATI Radeon HD 5470 (512MBs Dedicated video RAM, 3,226MBs Total avalable Video RAM)
6GB DDR3
Built in Blu-Ray player and HDMI Port

TV specs
Vizio, 47" LED Edge let LCD HDTV
1080P
120Hz
First of all nobody that has answered this question know what there talking about!
All I want to know is if it will work as good as a Blu-Ray Player or not! If it will not than I will get a better graphics card! Blu-Rays players do not work the best, I can get a graphics card that will allow 600+ Frames per second and a resolution twice that of a Blu-Ray Player!
Don't Comment unless you have a good answer and Facts to back it up!

Answer
it won't work you need a blu-ray player to play blu-rays.. a blu-ray player will, however, play DVDs

What's the differences between Blu-Ray & HD DVD Player?

VIctor

Can a regular Blu-Ray play a HD DVD?

Answer
HD-DVD was a competing format to Blu-Ray. Both are HD formats. Several months ago, HD-DVD was dropped by all its coalition manufacturers. A couple companies made players that could play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, but those models have been discontinued due to the demise of the HD-DVD format. Unless your player specifically lists HD-DVD as a format that it supports, your Blu-Ray player will not play HD-DVDs.

Blu Ray DVD?

Q. I am buying DVD'S online, and I am seeing ads for Blu Ray DVD'S. What is a Blu Ray DVD - and also - what is the difference between a Blu Ray DVD and a regular DVD???

Answer
Blu-ray is a high-definition format for movies to play in full HD resolution (known as 1080p). Of course, you need a high-def TV to play high-def movies.

And, like all technology updates of this sort, Blu-ray will play your old DVDs but your DVD player will not play Blu-ray discs. Hope this helps.

why does blu-ray not work on my portable dvd player?

Sabrina

when i put it in it just says no disc

Answer
Because Blu-Ray isn't DVD..... That's why they sell Blu-Ray players AND DVD players.
Blu-Ray discs need a different kind of laser, and store information differently.
The good news is that Blu-Ray players play both Blu-Ray discs and DVDs.

Hey can i play blu-ray discs on my regular portable dvd player?

Simple answer: NO
You need a blu-ray player. Blu-ray players can play DVDs though.

LG BP620C 3D Blu-Ray Player or LG BP620 3D Blu-Ray Player Does anyone know the difference?

chooesy

Looking for a device, primarily to be used for streaming and playing media files.

I know one at least is discontinued model. That is not a concern.

Anyone have comments on these two or know the difference? Or is there one you prefer? Thanks for the help.

I ordered a WD box, not yet received. I think the reviews on these looked far better.

Answer
If you want a more reliable player than the LG, look for a Panasonic or Samsung. Keep in mind that 3D technology has not been a very popular technology with consumers. To be able to watch in 3D, you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray movie (at this time there are only around 200 titles available and they are mainly animated movies from Disney) and 3D glasses for each person. Go online to Home Theater Magazine, which is now Sound and Vision and read the reviews on all product for your home theater. Watching in 3D also has a limited viewing angle. Hope this will help you out.

What should I look for in a Blu-Ray player?

Drew

Finally making the jump to Blu-Ray. Strictly in terms of picture quality (and not insanely expensive), what would you recommend? Brands/models etc.

Or what if anything should I look for in a Blu-Ray player that is important in terms of quality?

I'm not really interested in WiFi or 3D capability.

Answer
If you want a reliable player, then get yourself a Panasonic. They always have a player that is highly recommended by Home Theater Magazine. Go online and read the reviews on the Panasonic 3D blu ray disc player. I still use my first generation Panasonic blu ray disc player, which is over 5 years old and played over 330 blu ray disc movies without one issue. Hope this will help you out.

ilovesumme

I put the disk in... the blu ray player is showing that the seconds are going by so I know it is playing. but it isn't showing up on my screen...

What tv/video thing should it be on? video 1 video 2 video 3 HDMI?? i tried all of them and it doesn't work... is there something else that i should put on??

sorry i'm not very good with tvs

Answer
Connect the blu-ray player to your TV using a HDMI cable. This will provide you with video and audio with a single cable.

Turn on the blu-ray player. You don't need to have a disc in it. Turn on the TV and set it to use the input where the HDMI cable is connected. Use the "Video" or "Source" button on your remote to cycle through the inputs on your TV. For instance, on my TV, my HDMI inputs are Video7 and Video8.

That's all there is to it, really. If you aren't seeing anything on the TV, then it could indicate there's a problem with either the HDMI port on your TV (try a different port) or the HDMI port on the blu-ray player.

Where can I buy a replacement blu ray remote?

I lost my Sony Blu Ray player remote. The model is the S360, and I can't seem to find the remote anywhere. Not in stores and not online. I was wondering if maybe the PS3 Blu Ray remote would work for it, seeing as how they are both Sony, but on the back of the packaging it says "For PS3 only."

It won't let me play half of my movies because they can't be controlled from the player itself, it has to be done by remote control. D: Heellpp.

Answer
Yeah the PS3 remote wont work, it uses bluetooth. Maybe try a universal remote, try google-ing a remote compatable with your model of player.
