What is the difference between a blu-ray player that has 1080p output vs. 1080p upconversion?

excelonx

I thought that all blu-ray players output in 1080p. Is this not the case?

Answer
You can tell the player to output in 480, 720 or 1080 resolution.

Sony players will output 1080i out the component cable jacks, but not 1080p. For copy protection reasons you only get 1080p from the HDMI jack with Sony BluRay players.

Also - BluRay players will up-convert standard DVD's to what ever resolution you say - but this only works using a HDMI cable. If you use analog cables - you only get 480 resolution. (This is not bad as most televisions also up-convert from 480 to their internal resolution).

What is analog used for in Blu-ray discs and players?

bevrock

My receiver I would hook a blu-ray player to is a DenonAVR988 and can decode DTS but thats all I know

Also whats the difference between HDMI output and Analog output

Answer
Are you talking about 7.1 analog channel outputs on the back of Blu-ray player ? These are used for connecting to an old receiver ( no DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD decoder on board ) with 5.1 or 7.1 analog channel inputs to receive analog signal that converted HD sound format into PCM. It is a good thing to enjoy HD sounds without having a HD capable receiver.

What Blu-Ray Player do you think is best.?

slum71

I just got a Samsung 52 inch LCD HDTV. I am looking to put a BluRay setup on it, but I need help making up my mind. I know several people suggest the PS3, but I am looking for something that will upconvert DVDs to near 1080p, and I am eventually going to set up a theater system onto it. I'd like to do some of the BD-Live stuff as well. Anyone have any suggestions or good or bad reviews about the players that they have. Thanks for your opinions.

These both are BD players - that are under 1000 bucks...

Answer
Panasonicâs latest Blu-ray Disc players are an exceptional value when it comes to Blu-ray performance. If itâs possible I would also wait and see what OPPO Digitalâs plans are for their new BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. (Itâs supposed to be making its debut at the 2009 International CES, held January 8-11.) If the BDP-83 BD player performs as well with Blu-ray Discs as their upscaling players perform with DVD-Video discs then it will be tough to beat for those discerning consumers that have a significant investment in DVD-Video discs and/or whose tastes range beyond what is available with the current crop of BD releases. If the latter applies to you then I highly recommend that you check out Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelityâs DVD Benchmark.

Samsung hasnât had a very rosy past when it comes to their earlier BD players so at this point in time I would be very hesitant to recommend a Samsung BD player.

If you absolutely cannot wait a little while longer to see what shapes up at the upcoming CES 2009 then I recommend purchasing one of Panasonicâs new BD players.

I need some info on 3D Movies and Blu-Ray players?

Cecily

so i bought a movie pack that comes with a 3D dvd, Blu-Ray dvd, regular dvd, and a digital copy, but it did not come with 3D glasses. in order to watch the 3D dvd what do i need and how does it work. can it be played on a regular blu-ray player or do u need a 3D blu-ray player. will it work on an LED t.v or do u need a 3D t.v. what kind of combination of a t.v. and blu-ray player do i need and would i need the 3D glasses?

Answer
The blu-ray disc will play on any blu-ray player, but will only be 3D on a 3D blu-ray player and 3D TV. Since it's the TV itself that dictates what 3D glasses you need, they would not be included with the purchase of a movie unless it was a promotion by a specific TV manufacturer who wanted you to buy their 3D TV.

Do you need a 3d blu-ray player to watch 3d movies on the samsung 3d tv? is it multiregion?

Javier

im planning to get the 46 inch 8000 series 3d tv from samsung but dont know much about it. like if i need the 3d blu ray player and if it is multiregion. Im gonna get a samsung home theater with the 3d blu ray. and i saw the rechargable glasses that are 200 bucks whats the difference between those and the ones that come with the movie.

Answer
"Do you need a 3d blu-ray player to watch 3d movies on the samsung 3d tv?"
Yes.

"Is it multiregion?"
The BD-C6900 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-eYzpH85mzKR/p_305BDC6900/Samsung-BD-C6900.html?tab=detailed_info .

"I saw the rechargable glasses that are 200 bucks whats the difference between those and the ones that come with the movie."
The ones that come with the "Monsters Vs. Aliens" bundle use a watch battery, and normally sell for $150 each. The battery can power the glasses for about 50 hours. The $200 models are rechargeable, so no battery replacement is needed.

What is the best ethernet cable to connect my blu ray player to my wireless router?

Shauna

...
Thanks

Answer
If your blue-ray is 100mbps catedory 5e is sufficent, if its gigabit the category 6a.

how do I hook up a blue ray player to nexflit?

hntraut

I have a blue ray player. It does not have wireless wifi. ( but I guess I could get a toggle wifi and hook it ) BUT I have DSL and a G-router. I hear that G-routers are not good for netflix. I heard I should get an N-router with a N wifi toggle. I can;t run cables........so I have to do it wireless. CAN YOU HELP ME..........PLEASE???

Answer
The most cost effective way is to get an ethernet power-line adapter. They use the wiring in your wall to send the signal. The cost of the adapters is the same as what the wireless dongle for the blu-ray player would be.
Simple hook-up. Plug one of the adapters in the wall by your blu-ray and run an ethernet cable from blu-ray player into adapter. Next, plug in the other adapter by your router and run an ethernet cable from adapter to your router. With this option you would not need to get a new router.

If you get a new router; get a gigabit router (substantially faster speeds when hard-wired)

I hope this helps

FYI - dont plug adapters into surge protectors - they wont work correctly

How does the internet browsing work on blu ray players?

Adam B

I was thinking about getting a new PC for my bedroom, mostly for just web browsing and playing DVDs, but then I thought about the blu ray players that connect to the internet. So my main question is, do these players allow me to browse the internet like I would on a PC, or do you only get access to sites like Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc? Also, if you can do general internet browsing, how does it work without a keyboard and a mouse? I'd assume the remote but just thought I'd ask that as well. Thanks
Also, if blu ray players do not allow for internet browsing, what would be my other options? I know there's Google TV, but I was only looking to spend around $100.

Answer
No, you can't browse the internet with blu-rays. Some come with apps to browse sites like the ones you mentioned like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Youtube, etc.

Should I Get A Blu-Ray Player?

Nathaniel

I've been wanting a blu-ray player for awhile but I'm really wanting to get the transformers signature edition (which I'm pretty sure is only blu-ray). Is a blu-ray player really worth it or should I just get the regular collectors edition? Also is the signature edition the same as just haven all 3 transformers speicial edition? Thanks for the help!!
ADD ON: I already have a 360 and A LOT of games (around 20) and I really don't want to get rid of it.

Answer
Well DVD's contain 70 year old standard def video so a BluRay player with a BluRay disk is a MAJOR improvement in video quality.

People have predicted that 'streaming' will replace disk-based use in the future so spending a bit more on a BluRay player that includes Netflix, Hulu, . streaming services might be a good investment.

Try www.bestbluraydeals.com for good prices from Amazon vendors.

"Anyone who says that PS3 is the best choice for a blu ray player is an idiot."

Lance - with respect the PS3 used to be the Gold Standard of BluRay players. There are several reasons for this:

* BluRay disks are really software programs written in BD-Java and processing the video takes some CPU horsepower. With the 3 cell-processors in the PS3 it has a massive engine to use which is why for several years it was one of the best BluRay players available.

* BluRay is backed by Sony and they make it a high-priority to keep the PS3 updated with all the latest firmware to fix problems. They have a major investment in the format so the PS3 firmware fix's and updates are fast and well-tested before they hit the consumer.

(Do not get me wrong - I am not a Sony Fan-Boy and I do not own a PS3. But I do have to respect the hardware.)

We are now in about the 4th generation of chipsets used in BluRay players and for HDMI connections so a $99 name-brand BluRay player can now rival the image quality of the PS3. You no longer have to spend $299 (or $499 for the Oppo player) to get a great HD image from this format.

Hope this helps.

DVD Blu-ray will not work in my laptop DVD player windows 7?

Daniel Woo

My Toshiba Laptop Windows 7 will not recognize a new Blu-ray DVD I just bought. Says it doesn't support this kind of file. Any suggestions or downloads I can get so I can watch this movie ?

Answer
First off, there is no such thing as a DVD Blu Ray. They are two difference technology, DVD or Blu Ray. To play a Blu Ray disc you will need to have a Blu Ray disc player. Blu Ray disc player can however play the DVD. Hope this will help you out.

Can a windows 7 computer replace a PS3 or xbox, Tivo hd, and a blu-ray and dvd player?

TOOTAl2

Answer
not really. windows 7 is able to replace your DVD player and Blu-ray player if you hook it to your television and are willing to go through the widows boot process anytime you want to watch a movie. There are DVR programs you can install that give you DVR functionality but they lack the easy interface of a dedicated TIVO. you can often find PC versions of XBOX games because they are both microsoft products but Playstation keeps a pretty tight riegn on their gaming franchises so even though you can download PS3 emulators (illegally mind you) they will never match up to using the hardware the game was designed for. If you choose to go this rought then you need a PC with Windows 7 or the new windows 8 demo version, a TV tuner card, a blu-ray drive, a PS3 emulator (again illegal), a bluetooth adaptor (for linking your PS3 and XBOX controllers), and DVR software. Your probably looking at $500-$800 depending on brand and you still would have to have a computer that has a strong enough processor and enough memory to run all of this.

PS3 - Blu-Ray question.

erez12

Lets assume I have a blu-ray DVD burner and a couple of blank blu-ray CDs. is it possible by any means to actually burn downloaded content and play it via PS3? im seriously thinking about purchasing a burner. although if there's no method of doing it I'll pass...

Answer
Well, the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 is set to read PS3 Blu-Ray Games & Blu-Ray Movies which are coded as an official disk. If you were to download let's say a game & burn the image to a spare Blu-Ray DVD, I don't think it would have the same coding that tells the PS3 it's an official disk so it might not play.

This is really just an assumption from researching into how XBox 360's can be chipped or "soft modded" (DVD Drive firmware replaced to read all DVD's)

So.. If there was such a chip or soft mod option for the PS3 I can't see why it wouldn't work. Unless ofcourse the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 doesn't use this coding. Ack, it's all so complicated, lol!

Blu-ray questions?

What is Blu-ray DVD, can it be watched on regular DVD players?

Answer
Blu-Ray is one of the two (the other being HD-DVD) formats for storing high definition video and data content. Blu-Ray Discs (BD) can store more data than HD-DVDs

BDs are only playable in Blu-Ray Disc players or HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Combo players because the laser used to read BDs is not built-in to regular DVD players (red lasers).

Help with Philips surround sound blu ray player ?

Cam

Does any body know a lot about surround sound blu ray players and TVs...trying to find the best settings to get threw most out of my stuff. And what does it mean on the speaker settings when it says dimension and angle

Answer
The best settings are the ones that sound right to you, every set up is different, every room is different, so the sound is every situation will change even moving the speakers just 3 or 4 inches can change the sound quality tremendously...dimension usually has to do with sound stage the depth of the presentation front to back, it can also be a setting that is used when there are only 3 speakers involved creating the illusion that there are back channels...Angle probably refers to a visual effect in a DVD movie, read your manual, if you do not have a manual download one from the Internet....

Where can i download HD films from?

Answer
yes you can
vga cable needs to be labeled as hd
best and easiest way is to use apple tv - supports up to 1080i
if you have 1080p it does not support it yet - you will not notice any difference between 1080p and 1080i though
on hdtv you do not need any program - apple tv streams movie from yr computer to hdtv

Why HD movie downloads are a big lie
Posted by George Ou
Thereâs a lot of buzz lately about the delivery of HD TV and Movie content over the Internet with shows like Lost being delivered by ABC.com and other video download services with XBox360 or iTunes. I even have friends and colleagues telling me that BlueRay or HD-DVD wonât make it because HD will simply be delivered over the Internet. But thereâs one dirty little secret that people are forgetting or that they donât understand, ITâS NOT HD theyâre getting over the Internet. Heck itâs not even NTSC 480i (720Ã480 60 fields interlaced) DVD quality when you really look at the amount of video data youâre getting!

Oh sure they might call it HD because it happens to be 1280Ã720 resolution which sounds awfully high, but youâre talking about an audio/video stream thatâs 1.3 mbps (megabits per second) at best. You can call it whatever you like and you can even claim it meets the minimum definition of HD because itâs 720p (1280Ã720) resolution but it ISNâT HD for the simple reason that the bit rate isnât enough. A regular 480i DVD is either 2, 5, or 8 mbps and most modern dual-layer 8 GB DVD releases are at least 5 mbps but more likely 8 mbps. A typical DVD movie is approximately 6 GBs of data while a typical âHDâ movie you download is only about 1.5 GBs of data. Do you honestly believe youâre getting more image information in that 1.5 GB so-called HD movie you downloaded versus that 6 GB DVD movie?

[Update 3:35PM - I was a bit shocked to hear some people argue that a 1.3 mbps H.264 MPEG-4 based 720p 30-fps video stream can be better than an 8 mbps MPEG-2 480i 60-field DVD stream. Iâm going to explain something; itâs impossible. MPEG-4 can compress data in a more efficient manner such that it can have a 1.4x advantage over MPEG-2 in compression ratios while maintaining the same perceived quality. However, thereâs absolutely no way that newer compression formats can overcome a 4 or 6 fold disadvantage in bitrate. Compression - especially in the lossy world of video - is more of a subjective thing. MPEG-2 video is already compressed fairly efficiently and youâre really not going to squeeze out any more than a 2 fold improvement at best no matter how fancy the encoder is. There can be marginal improvements in the field of compression but there are never free lunches.]

The fact that a DVD is only encoded in 480i video is unfortunate but it still has more video information and raw potential than a so-called HD movie download for the simple fact that it has 4 times more data. A 480i video stream can be âup-scaledâ to a 1080i or 1080p 1920Ã1080 display with glorious results and I guarantee you that it looks better than that so-called HD 720p movie you spent at least 3 hours downloading over the Internet while your family complains the Internet connection is really slow.

But truthfully speaking, the whole Blu-ray versus HD-DVD format war is silly because a regular dual-layer DVD can easily store 93 minutes of 12 mbps 1080i or 1080p H.264 or VC-1 encoded video with bare minimum HD quality that looks much better than normal MPEG-2 480i DVDs. This format would have been extremely easy to produce and the players could have cost less than $100. The only thing that HD-DVD gets you is that you can either store 3 hours of that same quality video or 100 minutes of good quality 20 mbps H.264 or VC-1 video. Blu-ray players for some reason decided to forego the more advanced video codecs like H.264 or VC-1 and theyâre using the old MPEG-2 encoding scheme which neutralized the capacity advantage of Blu-ray media. [UPDATE 6/1/2007 - Newer Blu-ray titles have begun using H.264 so theyâve regained the capacity lead.] But instead, we have a format war where no one is really winning since Sony decided to cede their market in the next generation console wars with the PS3 to salvage the BlueRay format.

Another huge misconception is that people tend to confuse HD movie downloads over the Internet with HD IPTV. While the acronym âIPâ stands for âInternet Protocolâ, people have the meanings reversed because Internet always involves IP but IP doesnât always involve the Internet. What I mean by that is that IP could strictly be a closed-network thing on a LAN (Local Area Network).

Note: Itâs also a huge misconception that VoIP (Voice over IP) means Voice over the Internet because the vast majority of VoIP traffic happens on the LAN and gets switched over the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

IPTV requires 16 mbps per HD Channel and it would be IMPOSSIBLE for it to traverse the Internet in unicast traffic in the near tear or long term. IPTV works on a very localized level within a carrierâs own network where everything travels on local fiber-optic multi-gigabit networks on a multicast (or cached) level out to the DSLAM and only from there does it unicast to the user over a mile of a pair of copper cables. [Update 5:50 PM - Think of multicasting as a massive carpool where data is only transmitted once for everyone whereas unicast means the video bandwidth is multiplied by the number of users. Even a 2 mbps unicast stream turns in to a 20,000 mbps stream with 10,000 users where as a multicast or locally cached 16 mbps stream for 100,000 users is still means 16 mbps of traffic over the backbone.] Thatâs precisely why AT&T U-Verse wants to install miniature DSLAMs within a mile of their customers so they can support a 20 mbps DSL connection that can support a 16 mbps unicast HD IPTV stream over the last mile in addition to data access to the Internet. Other than U-Verse, Verizonâs FiOS (Fiber to the premises or home) is the only other way that IPTV can be delivered to the home. The Cable Internet companies donât really care about IPTV because they deliver their digital television over a different frequency over the same coax cable and itâs a broadcast technology that sends out the same analog/digital signal to everyoneâs house.

This is precisely why HD Movie downloads are a big fat lie being pitched to consumers because even the delivery of 1.3 mbps unicast traffic will bring most parts of the Internet down to its knees if enough people use the service. The carriers are in a strategic position to be close enough to the customer that they can actually deliver true HD-quality IPTV with some level of video on demand and that scares the Googles of the world to death because thereâs no way an Internet based 1.3 mbps make-believe HD video service can compete with true HD IPTV. Thatâs precisely why Google lobbied so hard to defeat the Telecom bill last year which would have deregulated the Telcos so they could implement IPTV and Net Neutrality was merely a political âpoison pillâ to kill the Telecom bill. More on this later â¦

PS3 versus Kinect, should I buy based on today, or future proof?

thelatin82

What I mean is I love the kinect. It's an amazing technology. No remotes needed, you are the remote. I've talked to people at several electronics stores that say Sony is working on a similar technology. It would work on the Move platform, but not require you to have a remote. Xbox decided not to put in a blu-ray player. PS3 does, blu-ray, 3D movies, free wifi service for things like netflix, downloads, demos, etc... Xbox does not have blu-ray, it has an annual fee for it's online service. no blu-ray movies means no 3d movies. It has the Kinect. I'm not a hardcore gamer and neither is my wife, but I love the kinect. I have a 50" plasma 3d tv. We had an upscaling samsung dvd player that stopped working days before my new television arrived. So I don't know how it looks. Right now a friend is letting me borrow his PS3 so I can decide. He also has xbox kinect so I'll be trying it out this week as well. I just feel that dropping $399.00 just so I can have Kinect is a bit excessive. It's fun though. PS3 seems to have everything in one. If they had a remoteless gaming module coming soon then it makes sense to future proof myself and get that.

My wife and I use our macbook pro connected to the tv via HDMI-DVI connection for netflix viewing. The picture is gorgeous!

So there you go. We've got an HDTV 1080p, Verizon Fios with HD box (wow amazing picture), no dvd player, no apple tv, no blu-ray player, no gaming console---YET. We don't want to have a shrine of electronics. I'm a video editor, but I'm also not one to go excessive. This Television is the first tv I've ever bought. We had a hand me down 27" incher until now. So I'm also not one to want to buy BOTH the xbox and PS3 like my friend. He even has a Wii. It's all well and good, but the only games I'm really into are sports and driving games. So your thoughts? Has anyone heard of Sony working on remoteless technology? I can't find a link to save my life regarding this. It's only been word of mouth. Thanks

Answer
well there are pros and cons to both systems xbox pros faster downloads all games are in 1080p(most of ps3s games are in 720p even though they are on a bluray formate) and the online experience is better and data doesent corrupt like ps3 downloads. the kinect 360 wont over heat like previous models not having a bluray player is the only con for the 360 for me ps3 pros bluray.and some exclusive games i own both consoles so i think you should get a 360 and a $80 bluray player. hope this was helpful.

Is there a way to hook up a blu-ray player to my Ipad with Retina Display?

Q. I was wondering if there was a way to hook up a blu-ray player to my Ipad with Retina display? I will be going away to work for 6-7 months and obviously can't take my tv with me. My Ipad with Retina has better resolution then my tv, so I was wondering if there was anything I could buy or do to be able to hook a blu-ray player up to it. Again, bringing my tv is not an option and there is no tv suitable for a blu-ray where I am going.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Answer
Not directly. The only way is through a device such as a Slingbox, but that may be limited in resolution, plus you need a Blu-Ray player with analog A/V out (and that may be limited to lower resolution for protected content).

But if you are investing in hardware, you likely might be as ahead buying a portable Blu-Ray player that has a built in screen.

Or, if possible, redeem the digital copies for your movies, and play those on your iPad.

netflix on bluray player question?

Dd

ok i have a insignia blu ray player that can connect to Netflix and i was wondering how to change the audio (language) and put in subtitles because its not in the menu so how do i change it?
yeah i looked trough that there was nothing about netflix on it

Answer
The Insignia BD players do not support alternative audio languages. They also do not support subtitles. The following devices support subtitles for streaming movies and TV shows:

PC/Mac
PS3
Wii
Google TV Devices such as Logitech Revue and Sony Internet TV
Boxee Box by D-Link
iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

Netflix does not have a list of devices that support alternative audio on their website. You will need to call customer service to inquire about specific devices.

Samsung sees death of blu-ray in 5 years?

http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/206997/samsung-sees-blu-ray-dead-in-five-years/

I don't agree. Some people dont want to download movies and games, and SONY is backing it up, not samsung.

Answer
One guy that works for Samsung said that blu-ray will die in 5 years, so now everybody is going to say it. It will not die in 5 years! Once blu-ray players and blu-ray discs become cheaper and become a common household electronic, then you can start talking about the death of blu-ray. Right now some of the Blu-Ray players are over $1000!

is there a 5 or 6 disc blu-ray player out yet?

The only blu ray disc changer currently out is the Sony HES-V1000 and it holds 200 blu ray discs and it also has an internal 500GB hard drive. It's more of a media server than anything, but right now, it's your only choice.

Oh yeah, and it costs $3,500.

Here it is: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665231960

What's so great about the PS3?

Embarrassi

Seriously.
Hahaha, Scotty, I love your theory.

Answer
It runs on a Cell Broadband Engine, the revolutionary processing core that runs more flops, or operations per second, than the best pc cores, and can assist the gpu in producing excellent graphical output.

Its gpu is a custom-made Nvidia called the RSX, exceeded in power only by the later 8000-series Nvidia cards.

It gives every user free access to an excellent online network that tells you which of your friends are online, what game they're playing so you can go join them, instant messaging, video/audio chat, and an excellent digital store with much free stuff and much cheap stuff.

It has a good web browser. You can install the best distribution of linux, Ubuntu Hardy, on it. It is the best blu-ray player in the world, and profile updates mean it will remain the best for a long time. All can play ps1 games. The better versions can play either all or most ps2 games. The controller is wireless, charges with a simple usb cable and has wii-like motion sensors. The games are on blu-ray discs up to 50gb, so that even pc games can't approach ps3 games in content. (yes there are 50gb ps3 games) The better versions have card readers and 4 usb ports. The Eye webcam records 120fps video and surround sound with 4 mics. All ps3's have hdmi 1.3 output and all but the old 20gb have wireless cards. The dvd player has a mean upconverter.

That's about it, except for you can get the ps3 in any color you want (as long as it's black).

Is it possible to put Mac OS X onto my HP Pavilion dv6-3132TX Notebook?

Jim-Bob

Hello. Having sooo much trouble with my current Laptop, and i regret not opting for a Macbook Pro.

But i'm stuck with my HP Pavilion dv6-3132TX Notebook (not exact one, exactly the same, just with a Blu Ray player and 8GB RAM, rather than 4GB). A friend of mine suggested i Dual boot my laptop to run both Windows 7 and Mac OS X, but i'm not sure how to do this, or if it is possible. I heard that playing with the Pavillion Drivers is a little bit risky, so i'm wondering if anyone has done it.

Thanks so much :)

Answer
OSX will not run on any device that doesn't have Maciness ;-). Might I suggest getting Linux, its a free and Open Source OS. Ubuntu is a great distribution! If you would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 you can get Wubi, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer . Its so easy to do it with Wubi! It could never get easier. Otherwise give up Windows completely! http://www.ubuntu.com/

Its just as beautiful as a Mac also is much more powerful and your laptop is has more power than required.

5.1 channel output HD DVD player, where can i get one?

Q. Im looking everywhere for a HD DVD player with clip connectors in the back ready to just plug in my existing 5.1 speakers and sub in the back. Im having no luck !! Can anyone point me in the right direction to one or a selection? THANKS :-).

Why would i go out and buy the whole package again when my 5.1 speakers and sub work perfectly fine.

Any help would be great :-) thanks.

( im picky, it would be nice to have an "optical in" as an accessory too )

Answer
More accurately, HD DVD went the way of BetaMax, since VHS machines are still being made. Do you really mean Blu Ray?

Anyway, a disc player with "clip connectors" on the back for hooking up speakers is called a DVD/receiver or Blu-Ray/receiver combo. Ironically, they usually come with "whole package" systems with 5.1 speakers and sub.

You're better off getting a stand-alone Blu Ray player and a decent A/V receiver to drive the speakers.

Does the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player have 5.1 out? I want to buy it, and a surround sound system?

So im looking at spending about £250 all together for Blu Ray and a 5.1 system for my bedroom. Does anyone know if this player has 5.1 out? And how easy is it to link it up? I'm new to the whole 5.1 thing... So any advice would help massively! Thanks

Answer
Yes ... all Blu-ray players do. The BDPS370 has surround output (5.1 DD, DTS HD and Dolby True HD) via HDMI and 5.1 DD and DTS via optical and digital coax), stereo via RCA (but no multi-channel analog outs). see specs at the link.

Issues with Sony Blu Ray and a Grainy Picture. ?

Mike

Hello

i have a Sony Bravia 46 IN LCD XBR with a Sony S350 Blu-ray and I have noticed that on Most of my Blu-ray movies that there is some scenes witha "Grainy" picture. This is very noticable but then disappears when it cuts to a different scene. I have my blu-connected by a Phillips HDMI cable then a monster cable connects the blue ray and suround sound to my TV via a Monster cable. Woul this issue be with the player, cables or is this a issue that occurs with all Blu ray movies.

Thank You for the help.

Answer
The grainy picture is there because some parts of movies are still being recorded on film and then they are up-scaled to a more Blu Ray like picture. When the picture isn't grainy then it is digitally recorded. I still wonder why they don't just record it all digitally.

Blu-Ray picture comes out grainy?

Anees

so I purchased the Harry Potter Bly ray box set and when I put it into my player the picture comes out a bit grainy I'm using a hdmi connection

Answer
All of the harry potter movies if my memory serves me were shot on 35mm film. Most major motion pictures are still shot on film. While it has resolution or detail far beyond consumer 1080p TVs, it can look very grainy or noisy in low light, and since most HP movies are kind of 'dark' that's probably what's going on.

one last thing, get into the video settings. Using a 'sharpness' setting that's too high can make this worse. If the grain really bothers you, there are usually settings to reduce noise, and sometimes using the mpeg NR will help. Edge enhancement can also make this worse.

It has nothing to do with your HDMI cable, the player or the disc. You will notice that other blu ray movies will be crystal clear with no noise or grain.

does it have to be burned to a dvd? where should i download and save it to and should i use NERO? would i just insert it and will it automatically upload? i have a polaroid hd tv and a LG blu ray and dvd player

Answer
To fully assist you with your request, we would need to have the model number. The early players required a DVD for the firmware update, were as the current players can be updated multiple ways. You could always contact LG to get the update sent to you. 1-800-243-0000.

I got a PS3 Remote for Christmas for the Blu-Ray player and threw out the instructions how do you program it?

Kel2332

I have looked everywhere online for instructions but can't come up with anything that is helpful. Please help me out or direct me to a website that can be helpful!

Answer
You have to pair it to the PS3. Go to accessory settings and then to Register Blue-Tooth device. Then click on Blue-Ray Remote. You go through the steps of scanning, when its done, it should work.

What would cause a Vizio blue ray to buzz? VR220 Blu-ray player with wireless internet apps?

Roger Floy

I just got a VBR220 Blue Ray player with wireless internet apps. Trying to hook it up and its making a buzzing sound. What could cause this?

Answer
Something in the fan of the player. All major electronics come with a fan to cool down the system from overheating. Since that's 1 of 2 moving objects in the player, I'd put money on that. If not that, then the player may be hitting something. Usually buzzing is caused by one of these.

Fastest blu-ray player that is wifi ready with netflix and the most apps?

Laura

Been looking at reviews online and found good reviews about the Sony BDP-S580, but heard that it is slow. Wondering if any other players have netflix and other apps, but are faster?

Answer
Depending on the apps you want, you may have to sacrifice speed for app variety or vice versa. I have the Sony BDP-S580. It does have an excellent app selection. The speed it has is more than sufficient for me, but it is definitely not the fastest. The interface does leave a bit to be desired.

I would start with the Samsung BD-P3600. It has been rated as the fastest loading player available by CNET and others.

Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray Player?

ekawaguchi

I need one that can play regular DVD's as well as Blu Ray / HD and one that has 1080 output. And preferably under $300. Any suggestions?

Answer
Google "best Blu-ray player" and you will find several comparative reviews (the 3rd link below is to one of the better ones).

But I want to focus on the results of my search for a player. While only recommended for those who value excellent video and audio performance over loading speed and "the latest" features, the best deal right now is, arguably, the Pioneer BDP51FD from 6th Avenue Electronics. This is the $600 MSRP model that is in all important ways is almost the same as the $800 MSRP Pioneer Elite BPD-05FD ... but is on sale for $284. (link 1). Most professional reviews were on players with early firmware. Since V1.17 (Current V1.25a) this player has really come into it's own.

The main pros are: excellent build quality and components; exemplary DVD scaling, CD audio quality (Audiophiles rate it as one of the best CD players available), and BD video quality; multichannel analog audio with built in support for Dolby TrueHD (and DTS HD master to follow via a firmware update); excellent "tweekability".

The main cons are: it is Profile 1.1 (and can't be updated to 2.0 ... which means no internet connectivity for updates or on-line extras ... but relative to audio and video quality this is relatively unimportant); relatively slow DVD layer change on some disks, limited bass management over analog audio outs, some reports of sensitivity to scratches on disks.

The second link is to an owners thread ... and many posts point out that this is one of the best Blu-ray players out there in terms of performance and quality. Overpriced at $600, but a steal at $284. Most of what you need to know is in the first few posts at the second link (e.g. #7).

Again .. this is a player for the videophile/audiophile ... not for those looking for glitz.

Other choices are summarized at the 3rd link.

Why am I not getting 1080p out of my xbox and 3D blu ray player?

Jesus

Just bought a Samsung 8000 series 55 inch 3d tv and bought Some hdmi cables to connect it all together. But when I check the output I'm getting 1080i and 60hz. When I should be getting 1080p and 240hz refresh rates. Is it my cables or the TVs settings?

Cables link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00383YPMA/ref=mp_s_a_2?qid=1296662576&sr=8-2

Answer
Maybe your TV is a 1080i TV! Otherwise if your xbox is saying that there should be a option to choose which setting to be displayed! Like 1080p or 720p. In your case it would be 1080p or 1080i whichever your TV is! Same goes with the blu-ray player there will be a setting to set the picture.. it should be set to what your TV is. So basically you're still getting high definition either way just a different form of it!

We bought a Samsung Series 8000 LED 55-inch HDTV,it shows that we are viewing in 1080i instead of 1080p.?

Luz

We are watching bluray discs in 1080p using a Sony PS3 which is capable of 1080p. So how can we calibrate our tv from 1080i to 1080p? Thank you so very much and bless your kind heart for giving us answers.
i looked at the ps3 settings and at "BD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI)" my choices are Automatic, Off and On. What shld I choose? i'm wondering why 24hz when my HDTV is 240hz. please advice. Ty so much.
we use HDMI cable to connect our PS3 to our HDTV. thank you.

Answer
Maybe your HDMI cable does not support it? The cheap old ones do not officially support 1080p. But check the settings in the Blu-ray player. It is probably set to 1080i.

will reg ol dvds(not hd) play on a blu ray player? I have a lot invested in my dvd's and wanted to know if they're now obsolete

Answer
blu-ray players will be made backward compatible to handle dvd and cd media ... no worry

Backward compatibility
While it is not compulsory for manufacturers, the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs for backward compatibility. For instance, Samsung's first Blu-ray Disc drive can read CDs, regular DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. All other Blu-ray Disc players that have been released so far are also capable of DVD playback, though not all support CD playback. This includes Sony, Panasonic, Philips, LG, Pioneer and PC-based players from Alienware, and Dell.

Hulu plus on the blu ray player?

Sarah

We recently bought a blu-ray player that was hooked up to the internet with Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, etc. I got on Hulu Plus on my laptop and it had all sorts of shows, but when I looked for them on the Hulu Plus that was built into the player, none of them were there. Why is this, and can I change it? Please help, we are a family of blondes and we are confused.

Answer
A large segment of Hulu+ content is only available from the PC. Hulu must obtain permission for every show they make available non-PC devices. Your only option is to connect the laptop to a television.

I have a Vizio Blu ray player with built in wifi and internet apps but hulu plus isn't showing?

According to the online website they have now added hulu to the list of internet apps but on my player itself hulu is no where to be seen and I have no clue how to find it or add it to my blu ray player. Any ideas?

How do I convert SSBB files to video?

If I had an emulator & SSBB for my computer, could I upload the file into the emulator, & record it with HyperCam or something?

Answer
You may try this video converterï¼ E.M. HD Video Converter which can âConverting all videos to HD Video

Is there a working PS3 emulator?

Lord Of Fe

Answer
No and there won't be for quite a long time. Emulation requires hardware that is significantly more powerful than the platform you're trying to emulate.

So if you want to play PS3 games, you're going to have to buy a PS3. They aren't that expensive nowadays when you think about what you're getting for $250:

Controller ($60)
3D blu-ray player w/internet apps ($150)
Oh yeah, plays PS3 games ($40???)

Does anyone know how to make a blu-ray player region free?

Skywriter

I've recently got a Samsung Blu-Ray Player and want to play my other region DVDs on it does anyone know how to make it all regions, the make is a Samsung BD-C5500.

Any help will be great

Answer
This device is sold in Australia as a locked region 4 DVD and region B Blue-ray player. There is no current procedure for unlocking the Blue-ray and it is probably not necessary because over 80% of released disks are region free anyway. (Just don't ever buy the other 20% and they will get the message soon enough!)

To change the DVD from region 4 (Pacific/Australia) to region 9 (region free) follow these steps using the remote control. (Adapted from http://tinyurl.com/2acybpj for Australian conditions).

1. Ensure that there is no disk in the tray.

2. Switch the player off and then back on. This is necessary to clean-boot the firmware.

3. Wait until the main menu page appears and the player stops doing anything.

4. Press the eject button to open the tray. (The button is between the "Power" and "TV Power" buttons at the top of the controller.)

5. Press the eject button to close the tray.

6. Wait while the player searches for a disk.

7. As soon as the "No Disk" message appears at the top left corner do the following.

8. Press the REPEAT button â just above the TV channel selector at the bottom right of the controller.

9. Enter 7 6 8 8 4 on the number pad.

10. The region code "4" should appear at the top left corner of the screen.

11. Enter a "9" to make the player region free. (Enter a region code if you want to lock the player to another region for some obscure or perverse reason.)

12. Power down and power up again.

13. Play a foreign DVD to verify the change.

==========================================================================================================

Now the tricky bits. This process is timing dependent.

Firstly, you must start entering the code just after the "No Disk" message is shown and before the message disappears. If you jump the gun or miss the boat (isn't English great!) it won't work.

Secondly, the REPEAT key is part of the code. All six keys must be entered smoothly as "REPEAT 7 6 8 8 4". The entry gets timed out so you can't stop in the middle and restart. Don't bash away like crazy, just do it smoothly and briskly.

If you don't see the "4" the first time, don't worry. Just repeat the process. It took me about a dozen tries before I got it to work.

I can't guarantee that this player does not have a region change counter so I would be a bit careful about changing regions back and forth. I also can't guarantee that this will work with all released firmware. Samsung seems to take this crazy region bastardry very seriously for some reason.

=======================================================

For people from other parts of the world, all region codes are as follows

1 â 2 9 3 3 4
2 â 5 7 5 3 8
3 â 5 6 7 3 2
4 â 7 6 8 8 4
5 â 5 3 8 1 4
6 â 2 4 4 6 2

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1â6 flags set.
1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories
2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland
3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau
4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania
5 India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia
6 People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, North Korea
7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)
8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.
ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

My Iron Man 2 blu ray disc wont play?

David

I put it in, and it makes it to the menu, then I can play around in the menu, but when I hit play or select a chapter, the screen goes black then restarts. I have the latest firmware update, its got no smudges, and I played it at my neighboirs house and it played 100% fine. I have a Panasonic, they have a Sony. I called the support line, but the stupid computer cant understand english. Help me cuz Im really quite rattled. Thanks for any ideas

Answer
You can also email the manufacturer. Just about all manufacturer are using people in India to answer there customer service calls. I own a Panasonic first generation blu ray disc player and never had one problems (model BD-10 which is 4 years old). You can try using a lens cleaner and see if it helps out. Panasonic player has had less problems than the Sony brand overall. Hope this will help you out.

region free my Samsung blu-ray player?

Bought a Samsung blu-ray player from New Zealand and took it to India. Tried to run a blu-ray movie but it asks for a region code. Any one knows the region code for region C?

Answer
Hereâs my suggestion for those who want to play Region A blu-ray discs on Region B/ C BD players: Use Blu-Ray Ripper to rip commercial blu-ray discs to hard drive, connect the hard drive with BD player, and play the blu-ray movie from hard drive. Blu-ray players usually support various video and audio codec, and ensure high-quality playback of M2TS, MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, etc.

Can I do this with a Blu-Ray Disc ?

ROBO731

I am planning on writing several files to a rewritable blu-ray disc. I am wondering:

1) I want to add files to the disc almost every week (if this is not possible I can do it every couple months). How many times can I add files to the disc?

2) Can my computer write to a blu-ray Disc? It is a Dell Inspiron N7110 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The disc drive is called BD-Rom and has a Blu-ray symbol on the side.

3) Can I add MKV (matroska) files to the disc?

4) If I add MKV's to the disc will a blu-ray player and PS3 be able to read them? If not, What filetypes can a these players read?

I will probably come up with even more questions after I post this, but please answer all or as many of them as you can. Any help will be appreciated.

Answer
Blu ray disc is just a larger container for data versus say a blank DVD. You can put any kind of file on it that you want, in any format.

You can add files to a disc from time to time, but it has to be a rewriteable version of blu ray, not just a write once BD-R. I believe it's called BD-RE.

Your blu ray drive is most likely only for reading blu ray, not writing/burning. ROM is read only memory. So you'll have to buy another blu ray disc drive that can write to a disc.

Is there something deficient about the blu ray player on the PS3?

Iceberg22

It just seems too good to be true.

So you can purchase a PS3 with a blu ray player for 400. Yet, to buy a blu ray player individually, you would have to pay 400-600.

Is the blu ray player on the PS3 deficient?

Answer
To my knowledge, there are no issues with the Blu-ray disc player on the PS3. In fact, the PS3 has generally been acclaimed as a very decent Blu-ray player, and great for value.

Sony has been using the PS3 as a platform to promote the Blu-ray disc as next-gen format. As a result, until this year, Sony actually was performing at a loss/break-even in terms of profit for the PS3 division (as a result of the 'low' pricing). Supposedly they have started entering the profit band now since manufacturing costs have come down (cheaper Blu-ray & cell production, no more emotion chip needed, etc.).

Certainly, the PS3 is not a dedicated Blu-ray player, so some of the specialized players you buy may offer some customization and adjustments you can't find on the PS3. But in terms of playback, there should be absolutely no issues with the PS3.

The PS3 is being promoted as not just a gaming system, but as a full-fledged home media entertainment system. Because of this, in addition to Blu-ray, the PS3 includes capabilities to play DVDs, CDs, SACDs, and various PC media formats like mp3s, avis, mpgs as if it were an HTPC, so you should expect it will play Blu-rays as well as any other player.

Should I get a dedicated Blu-Ray player or is PS3 good enough?

I don't play a whole lot of games or play a lot of movies so I wondered if my PS3 is fine for both gaming and movies (dvd and blu-ray) I have a 1080p 120hz HDTV and using hdmi cables on my ps3.
Was trying to research a little but a lot of the stuff I read had to do with 3D or was just a few yrs old and mentioned something about deterioration of lens or system playing too many movies
Thanks. Ive had the PS3 for a couple yrs now but just got a new tv. I got a remote for the ps when I was streaming Netflix so now I can get more use out of my investment.
I just wasnt sure if playing movies too much does something to it. A few of the comments I read mentioned "Best Buy guy said..." so wasnt sure if it was just a sales ploy or if I really should get a dedicated blu-ray Its nice to get rid of some unnecessary electronics

Answer
Sony was the original company to make the Blu-Ray. They have always taken pride in their video game systems and are trying to make them a full at home entertainment experience so they have not added a Blu-Ray player as a side feature. It is one the most advertised things about the PS3 aside from playing games. The PS3 lens may deteriorate over time, but no more than any other Blu-Ray player. The PS3 isn't the cheapest Blu-Ray player out there but it is one of the best. I wouldn't spend money on another Blu-Ray player.
