Can Blu-Ray dvds play on a computer (windows vista) dvd player?

kixr

& what's the difference between blu-ray & normal dvds? thanks

Answer
Blu-ray Discs are read with a blue laser, standard DVD discs use a red laser, that is why DVD players cannot read Blu-ray Discs.

Blue lasers have a shorter wavelength and as such can read more data in a shorter narrower groove. This allows a dual layer Blu-ray Disc to store over 5 times more data than a dual layer DVD (50GB vs. 8.5GB). The technical maximum bandwidth of audio and video combined is 48 Mbps, versus DVD's 10 Mbps. Blu-ray also uses MPEG-4 and VC-1 codecs for video which are far more efficient than MPEG-2, which is the only video codec used on consumer DVD's.

Blu-ray can carry visible resolutions up to 1920x1080 @ 24Hz progressive and 1080x1080 @ 60Hz interlaced.
DVD can carry visible resolutions up to 720x576 @ 50Hz or 60Hz interlaced.

Blu-ray and DVD are completely different, so putting "DVD" after the word "Blu-ray" is incorrect.

How can I connect my Blu-ray player to my computer?

Bobby The

Answer
You'll want to connect it to your monitor - not the computer.

Most mid-range monitors come with a HDMI connection which will give you HD video.

Some monitors also have built in speakers, so in that case you're all set. If your monitor doesn't have built-in speakers you can connect the blu-ray player to your surround sound system or to your computer speakers.

Connecting the blu-ray player to your computer will require you to have a HD-compatible video input (most computers have video outputs - but not an INPUT.) You'll have to buy this separately and even then it may not allow you to play HD movies through your computer due to the vagaries of blu-ray copy protection.

Really, just connect it to your monitor.

Blu Ray region free?!?

Kurtis

Right, I was just wondering and have tried searching the net but have had no luck.
Will a region 2 Blu Ray player, play 'region free' blu rays?

Answer
Strictly speaking Blu-rays are zoned rather than regioned. The UK is Zone B for Blu-ray. Region 2 for DVD, but regardless of that any Region- or Zone-free disc will play on a UK Blu-ray player.

Where can I buy a region free 3D blu ray Player?

Kristine A

Where can I buy a region free 3D blu ray Player?

Answer
If you mean "Region free" to play DVDs (as opposed to any zone A; B or C Blu-rays) then in the UK Richer Sounds sell the 3D capable Sony BDPS480 for £99. Doing multi-region for DVD is pretty easy.

By comparison, buying a machine that will play Zone A; B or C Blu-rays is a far more expensive thing to do. You'll be looking at a minimum spend of around £250. This will get you 3D, multi-zone Blu-ray and multi-region DVD though. That will get you the LG BP620 with a hardware chip installed to allow multi-zone Blu-ray. At the moment it's only a couple of LG models, then Pioneer and then Oppo players that can be made Blu-ray multi-zone.

Hope this helps

What is the difference exactly between the macbook pro and macbook air?

Sara

There were a few differences that i have question on:

1. Specifications:
Air : Up to 512GB flash storage
Pro: Up to 1TB 5400-rpm hard drive; or up to 512GB solid state drive

2. Other Features:
Air : ---
Pro: One Firewire 800 port (what is a Firewire 800 port?)

3. Other Features:
Air: ---
Pro: SuperDrive (What is a SuperDrive)

Answer
1. You can upgrade a hard drive later. You cannot upgrade flash storage.

2. Firewire is a high-speed networkable connection. It can be used for external drive in a case that has a FW port, camcorder with FW port, high-quality still camera with FW port, other computer with FW port (for target disk mode).

3. SuperDrive is a DVD-CD burner / player. It burns anything but Blu-Ray.

With flash storage, no Firewire, and no optical drive, Air is very light. Think of it as a large iPad that runs OS X (iPad runs iOS).

Should I get a MacBook or a Sony VAIO?

chevycobal

I'm getting a new laptop, but I can't decide. I can get a MacBook for $1,000, and I've always wanted a Mac. However, Wal-Mart is offering through it's Site-2-Store a Sony VAIO laptop with Windows 7 and a Blu-ray player for a little over $700. (I already have a BD player, but this would obviously be portable.) Which one should I get?

Answer
Apple MacBook
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QQ8EKO?tag=dcmb-20

Review:
Pros:

- Unibody enclosure
- Same battery as the MacBook Pro
- Same graphics and processor (low end) of 13" MBP
- Glass multi-touch trackpad
- 250GB Hard Drive (bigger than entry level MBP)
- DDR3 RAM
- LED Backlit Display
- SuperDrive
- New AC Adapter (I just like it better. Basically the same as a MB Air's)
- Snow Leopard
- Price

Cons:

- No backlit keyboard
- Bezel around the display isn't as "refined" and the edge to edge glass on the MBP
- No Firewire. Isn't that big for current products as most things are going USB, but legacy items and high transfer rates of Firewire 800 or sustained throughput of 400 would have been nice.
- Battery is non-removable. Again, could be a big deal for some.
- "Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean
- While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.
- Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.

Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

Review 2: Wow. Okay, I previously had a Sony Vaio that ran Windows Vista. It wasn't a bad computer in any sense, but now that I've owned this Macbook for a day, I can already see that it wasn't a GREAT computer at all! Even after a single day, I can already tell that this Mac has pulled me in, and I will never go back to Windows computers, unless they somehow become more amazing than Apple. But they won't. Once you go Mac, you don't go back ;)

But... anyway. The pros:
1. Start up/shut down. Shut down takes 5 seconds, and start up takes 10-20 seconds. My jaw dropped when I actually saw it happen.
2. The BATTERY. It really will last up to seven hours. Which I need, as I am a college student. If nothing else, get it for the battery life, haha.
3. Ease of use! I know my way around Windows computers quite well, and this was my first Mac, but my gosh, I've caught on quite quickly. Installing & uninstalling "apps" is 1000X easier than programs in Windows. I couldn't believe it was so easy, again, until I saw myself do it. If you happen to lose anything, spotlight will easily find it for you. Similar to the "search" feature in Vista's start menu.
4. The power adapter. It really is a simple magnet. You can pull as hard as you want, and the computer is going nowhere as it detaches.
5. The keyboard, and track pad! And... well, honestly, everything else, haha.

Cons:
1. No SD card slot. But this can easily be fixed by purchasing a SD-USB item. I haven't done so yet, but eh.

Overall, this is definitely a computer you should get. I once thought Apple overpriced its computers, by looking at the technical specs. Now I realize, you really do get what you pay for. Mac is sooo much better! Now I'm a believer :P

questions about blu ray players?

Yannd

I am looking to get myself a blu ray player and also one for my mom and one for my dad for christmas. I am in college so I'm pretty tight on money. What are the best cheap blu ray players and the places to shop to get the best cheap ones? also when looking online I'm seeing a lot of refurbished blu ray players for cheap, any comments on there? do people ever experience problems with them? best refurbished brands? just need some general information on blu rays, all advice and answers appreciated, thanks!

Answer
I myself don't feel comfortable buying refurbished units although probably most of the returned units are cosmetic issues, but that is not to say they couldn't have had mechanical or electrical issues, but that's just me.

The best buy and quality blu ray player is still the Sony PS3, which I own and works great. The only two things is it does not come with a IR remote you have to use the joystick it comes with unless you buy the optional remote. You must also set all the video and audio settings to get the best picture, not a big deal but you do need to get into the menus.

Remember you must also have a high definition television to see the benefits of a blu ray so keep that in mind.

Samsung 3600 Blu-Ray Player?

W

I just purchased the samsung P-3600. It was a refurbished model from Buy.com. I have it connected wirelessly to the internet. The problem is that the only program in "e-content" is "YouTube" How do I get "netflix" "Pandora" and "Blockbuster" applications on the device?
I found out from Samsung this was a Blu-Ray player not created for USA. There is no way to get netflix on my device. Everthing else works great on it...

Answer
Good Question, mine came new with all the apps you mentioned.

Pandora is free for 40 hours a month but you have to subscribe to it.

Netflix needs a subscription also. You can probably ask both how to get it on the blu ray. When I turned the blu ray on the first time, a registration number came up and I had to go online to type that number in. Being refurbished, someone else probably used those reg. numbers.

Blockbuster is a rip off. $4.99 to $6.99 Per Movie. I don't think you really will miss this one.

Good luck

Why does my new sony blu ray player skip?

Jackie

Just bought a new blu ray and it skips once or twice during every movie we have played on it. It is only about a two second skip. Is it a problem with the player and should I take it back?

Answer
I would take it back and get a new one, don't let the store grantee expire.

Skyfall Blu Ray won't play!?

Ismael

So I bought the new Slyfall Blu Ray and went to play it. The Blu ray kept stuttering and skipping and the sound would cut out. I put in the DVD, and it plays like a dream. Does the player use the same piece to play the DVD as it does for the blu ray? This has only happened on old discs or ones that were scratched and I've never encountered this before. just wondering if its the disc or my player.

Answer
These are what you have to check on your Blu-ray player to make sure, so that the Blu-ray disc will play.

-Have you downloaded and updated your Blu-ray player with the latest firmware, IF it needs that to play the disc, and NOT the last version that was on the manufacturer's web site.

-IF you have already updated your Blu-ray player with the latest firmware, and it still will NOT play. Could it be a parts problem, and has nothing to do with firmware update. Even the latest version will not help with that. IF it is a parts problem.

-Maybe it looks like a parts problem in the Blu-ray player. But all you need is just use a Blu-ray player laser lenses cleaner to clean the inside.

-IF you have another Blu-ray player try the Blu-ray disc in that player. IF it works then the Blu-ray disc has no problem. It would haveto be one of the other problems with the other player.

-Could it be the disc you got, has problem. Because in the production of say 3572 Blu-ray disc for a movie there got to be two or three disc that has problems. Who knows which one could it be, maybe it disc 72, disc 698 and disc 745. So bring it back and let the store you brought it from know. IF you got it from big name retailer like Best Buy and Target should let you exchange it.

-Last of all IF it still have problem after exchanging for another one. Maybe it is a parts problem in the Blu-ray player. IF you have already updated the player to the latest firmware, from the manufacturer's website and also have clean it with a Blu-ray player laser lenses cleaner. NO one that lucky or would want to get the the disc that also has problems in the mass production again. And anyway who knows which store it be shipped to in which city and state.

Install OSX on PC Laptop?

Goal: I want to use Final Cut Pro with a Sony Vaio FW Laptop. I don't need Vista - what if I only install Leopard from Apple's disc?
Can I install Leopard on the Sony Vaio FW Laptop that I customized below on Sony's website?
Will this work?

Customized Sony Vaio FW 16.4" Laptop

$2499.99
Intel® Core⢠2 Duo Processor T9900 (3.06GHz)
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit
Black
8GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 4GBx2)
128GB Solid State Drive
Blu-ray Disc⢠playback/burning
ATI Mobility Radeon⢠HD4650 graphics card with 1GB vRAM-great for games and movies
16.4" widescreen with XBRITE-FullHD⢠LCD technology (1920x1080)

I have nothing against Apple, I own a Macbook Pro. I just can't stand waiting for Apple to incorporate Blue ray disc players/burners and high resolution screens like on the Sony Vaio.

If your answer is "No" to my question, I understand. But, please don't tell me to get a new Macbook Pro - I have one right now. Recommend me any PC laptop that can run Mac OS Leopard that has equal or better specs than this Sony Vaio!!!! Or if your answer is "Yes" please share how I can do this. Thank You
Also, I only use Final Cut Pro - please don't told tell me to get some PC editing software.

Answer
What you are talking about is hackintoshing. I have a few links posted below to show you which Netbooks are best for hackintoshing. Currently, I do not recommend hackintoshing your Sony Vaio laptop because it could cause problems with the BIOS among other things.

What camcorder works with Mac and the HD quality can be viewed on my 1080 46 inch sony?

Shree P

Id like a camcorder. Couple year older is fine i can get it on ebay that records in HD and is compatible to download onto my Mac. AND that if I want I can burn onto a disc and watch them with HD quality on my 1080 Tv?
I would also like to edit the videos once downloaded so I can make movies so i want the software to be all recognized.

Answer
What is your budget?

Which Apple Macintosh?
The MacBook Air and some MacBooks have no firewire port so that takes miniDV tape camcorders off the table - but just for them. ALL other Macs made in the last 10 years have a firewire port. If the Mac is running OSX, has an Intel CPU and is running iMovie '08 or newer, then AVCHD camcorders will get along.

This gets the high definition video into the computer for editing...

Now for output...

Assuming you have a Blu Ray player connected to your HDTV, you should get a Blu Ray burner connected to your Mac... LaCie makes good ones...

Another option is to connect your Mac to the HDTV - no need to burn a disk. Or get a MacMini to be a media server. The new ones can connect using either HDMI or component (+ audio).

Which DVD player...
If you have only a regular DVD player, there is nothing you can do to *make* it play high definition video, so just use iDVD and have it downsample the high def video to standard def and render for you.

But you have not supplied enough information and we don't know what you have so we don't know if your specific environment is equipped to do what you want.

I've been capturing high definition video, importing to Macs, editing and playing back standard and high definition video for about five years... using Sony and Canon camcorders...

About Blu-Ray DVD Players?

~Ms. Q~

What makes them different from normal DVD players? Are they better?
Please help me, I am clueless :)

Answer
Blu-Ray is the evolution forwards of the DVD from a device that uses a RED laser and stores 4 or 8GB to one that uses a blue laser (the light is smaller wavelength than red light is so you can fit more information on a disc) and stores around 50 to 400GB.

the ordinary DVD can hold a 2 to 3 hour movie at 480 or 575 lines resolution with 5.1 sound using MPEG4 compression.

a blu-ray can hold a 3 hour movie at 1080 lines resolution with 7.1 or 9.2 sounds so both video and sound have MUCH M4UCH better quality using MPEG4 or newer compression plus can have interactive Java and web links embedded.

some 'upscaling DVD's can take the 480 lines and interpolate it to 1080 lines all this does is smooth edges and not add any detail. the difference between upscaled DVD and blu-ray is very noticeable (like reading with or without glasses you see so much more detail).

A DVD can play normal DVD's and CD's but NOT blu-ray disks

a Blu-Ray can play DVD's Cd's and blu-ray's

despite some people saying the blu-ray will be replaced this year by broadband its not happening as blu ray prices are coming down and sales shooting up. a HD movie on broadband can take 12 hours to download and take 2 months usage allowance and still not match the blu-ray quality.

Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray Player?

Eric Ver L

I want to stream netflix and hulu plus, the player is WiFi ready but I have to use a usb wireless adapter in order to do so. I don't have my own internet, otherwise I'd just connect it by Ethernet. I'm currently using my neighbors WiFi. Earlier, I plugged in my no name wireless adapter from eBay to the player and a message popped up saying the adapter wasn't supported. The box says to refer to the owners manual for a list of compatible adapters but the manual doesn't have a list of compatible adapters. So, does anyone know which adapters would be compatible with the Sony BDP-S480 Blu-Ray player?

Answer
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but using a neighbour's broadband is a bit naughty. Even if they gave you permission (and you do have permission, right?) then they are still legally responsible for anything you download using their connection. There may even be a question of breaking the ISP terms and conditions of service.

All of the above said, and presuming there are no legal ramifications, then you don't have to rely on a USB wireless dongle. A wireless gaming adapter will work as well or possibly better. This is a wireless bridge device that connects to the wireless network and then provides an ethernet connection. Try Googling the phrases "wireless gaming adapter" or "wireless game adapter". You'll get lots of hits. Just skip the USB versions.

how do u play video games in 3d?

Andre

i understand u need a 3d tv but do u need 3d glasses or anything? and how does it work?

Answer
Buy a sony bravia 3D tv buy a HDMI 1.4 cable buy a PS3 buy killzone 3 set everything up put on the 3D glasses on the tv usually comes with 2 3D glasses if you want buy a 7.1 audio system and an optical cable sit on your couch and enjoy a really awesome game in 3D at 1080P @60FPS if you are wondering why I chose PS3 as the 3D game machine is cause 3DS 3D effect isn't as good as a 3D with glasses and 3D computers are expensive as hell and killzone 3 is a 3D game exclusive to PS3 and a 3D compatable blu ray player is like 400-500$ and the PS3 delivers the same 3D as that expensive blu ray player but it is only 300$

What is the differences 1080P 24fps and 30fps ?

rayboy

1/. Canon 5D, 1080P 30 fps and Nikon 7000 1080P , 24 fps . Is the picture quality the same between the 30fps and 24 fps ??
2/. What is the rate for fps in movie standard today (30 or 24) ??
Many Thanks

Answer
1-The picture quality will be indistinguishable if you know how to work the camera right. HD TV is broadcast at 29.97fps unless its a sports program in which case the frame rate is usually 60p so the action will be smooth and undistorted.

2- The frame rate of a movie is dependent on the film maker. There is no industry standard rate. Some are shot in 24, 25, 30, or 60fps. But if you have a Blu-ray player, you might have noticed that 99% of the movies are at 24fps which is the rate of the old movie film.

LG PA49 Optical out to LG Blu Ray Player for Audio on TV Shows?

David

HI,

I have just purchased an LG PA49 HD TV. What I notice is the sound is really average.

What i would like to know is.... does anyone have any experience or know how to connect the TV to a Blu Ray player to play the audio only.

What I want to do is watch TV and disable the Audio and force all sound from the TV to the Blu Ray Player.

It has optical Out, and my Blu Ray has Optical In.

I turn on the Optical function on the Blu Ray player... and no audio.

The Optical Cable is displaying the red light so i would assume its working properly...

It appears LG is really bad at providing instruction on this simple task... so if anyone knows how to set this up and can give any pointers that would be greatly appreciated

Answer
If it's really just a Blu-ray player, the optical port is an output, not in. If by Blu-ray player, you mean a home theatre system with speakers that includes a Blu-ray player (as Andre mentioned), it should work.

Look in your tv's audio settings and make sure the digital audio output (or optical audio or S/PDIF) is enabled. Try setting it to pcm - if it works, it'll give you stereo. Then try changing it to "raw", Dolby Digital, or similar. For most tv's, you'll only get true surround sound from over-the-air antenna tv. To get surround sound from another player or cable/satellite box, you should connect those straight to the receiver.

And for the record, I have an old home-theatre-in-a-box and it sounds great. Some of them aren't bad depending on your needs and things such as room size. I'm sure Andre would tell me his multi-thousand-dollar system is better, to which I would say "well it freakin' better be!" :) As a bonus I had money left over to buy more movies or, you know, help feed starving orphans and whatnot. It all depends on what you like I guess.

Best quality option video and audio from single hdmi output on blu-ray player?

Tim H

I would like to connect my blu-ray Samsung BD-P1600 (single HDMI output) to my Vizio HDTV directly via hdmi to get the improved video processing vs. my receiver (Pioneer 919) while still able to connect via HDMI to get true hd audio on my receiver. I see all kinds of hdmi splitters but they seem to be for some other purpose (ie connecting single video source to 2 tv's). Would these work (well) to get audio on my receiver and video on my tv? Is there another solution other than using optical for audio?

Answer
You should connect HDMI directly from Blu-ray player to receiver for both audio and video and another HDMI from receiver to TV for video. This is the best way to go for HD sound and quality picture.

Panasonic Portable Blu-ray Player or Portable DVD Player?

Sun_King

I hear a lot of people say that Blu-ray movies are so awesome and look great. Panasonic is releasing a portable player in the next few months. But the only thing is that it's going to be like over $500. It's going to have internet also. On the other hand, I can get a really nice portable dvd player for around $200. (Sony) Sony's player can play music on it also. I've never watched a Blu-ray movie but I'm all about quality of the picture. Which do you guys (and gals) think I should get?

Answer
If you want one with a really good picture Blu-ray is probably the way to go but it will be on a small screen anyway. From what you said you have no Blu-ray disks so DVD is better for the fact you would actually have things to watch on it. As for internet it is probably only some places with a network in range so for travel probably not good. I think I would go with DVD for travel but if at home go for an actual normal Blu-ray player.

Answer
Everyone is going to argue against this, but I think the results depend on the equipment you have already. I have a higher end television set that does a great job up-converting and processing the video signal. I also have (left from years gone by) a higher-end Yamaha DVD player. So I went out and bought a bul-ray to go with my 46" LCD HDTV and I hooked it up with an HDMI cable. I could barely see any difference between the blu-ray disk and the regular disk on my Yamaha.

So, I returned the blu-ray and got my money back. My wife and daughter also said "what's the big deal supposed to be?" so we stayed with the regular DVD player.

If you have bottom tier equipment to begin with, or you have a 65" screen, then a blu-ray might produce a picture worth the price. It didn't for me.

How do I play .mts files with my sony s360 blu-ray player?

Rocky

To be clear, I don't want to convert the files. I just want to take a bunch of .mts videos, burn them to a dvd and play the HD videos on my blu-ray player which is able to play avchd files. So far, simply burning .mts files onto dvd and playing the dvd doesn't work. I think there may be a certain file structure needed (e.g. /AVCHD/STREAM and /AVCHD/CERTIFICATE), but I'm not sure of the exact structure needed. Are other files needed such as index.bdm? Anything else? Thanks.

Answer
You may use the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.

It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.

Which Blu-Ray Player should I buy?

5619

I want to buy a blu ray player but there's so much to choose from.
Here are my choices: Sony BX18, LG BD630, Panasonic DMP-BD75
The Sony i want to buy because i think they have it in costco. I dint want to wait for the player to come through amazon cause then ill have to wait. I saw the reviews and they said that streaming was really bad but i don't care for streaming i just want to watch Blu ray disks in high quality. Keeping in mid that Costco would let you return ANYTHING, so if i don't like it i could return it.
The lg i just want to buy because it is more popular than the others and i think its a more legit brand than panasonic. This i have to buy on amazon.
The panasonic is cheaper than both, has kinda better reviews than both and is from amazon.
Now i don't really care about anything other than the DURABILITY AND QUALITY . Other than that it doesn't matter to me
Thank you for helping i really want to buy one but its such a hard choice.
I dont want a PS3 i wont be playing games and also no 3D players

Answer
Pretty much all Blu Ray players are going to look the same, as long as you have it connected to an HD TV through an HDMI cable. With that said, I would buy the Sony one because of Costco's great customer service, their extended warranty, and the fact that you can get it without having to wait for it to arrive.

My Blu-Ray player can play DVD but not Blu-Ray?

psych23232

I asked about my Blu-Ray player before, Panasonic DMP-BDT210, that it can't play my Blu-Ray movies.

But my mother put in a DVD movie and somehow it plays the DVD. But when I put in a Blu-Ray movie, I get the message "Cannot read, check the disc."

That doesn't make sense to me. This is a Blu-Ray 3D player and it played Blu-Ray movies before but now it can't read them, yet it can play DVD's and CD's?

What the heck is wrong with the player?

Answer
First of all have you ever updated your 3D Blu-Ray player's firmware before from the default that came along. IF NOT go to Panasonic's website and look firmware to your model of your Panasonic player. Sometime you need to do that in order to play certain movies, IF there are NO parts problems. When I first got Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skeynet Edition it would not load up to the menu screen and stay at the loading wait on my Pioneer BDP-51FD. So I looked online for info, and that got me to do my very first firmware update, and NOT leave it at the default firmware that came along. This was back in late May or early June of 2010. After I updated the firmware to 1.65 from the company's site. I had never update my Blu-Ray player's firmware since I got it in mid February of 2009.

I had this problem when the remake of True Grit was released back in June of 2011. I got it the second or third day. The first time I put it in my Pioneer BDP-51FD it would not play, after it finished saying closed and went to loading. It would stay at that to a certain point(I would guess it always the same amount of time), and then a message would show up on the HDTV screen and player's little screen saying "Can't Play This Disc" and Unknown Disc. Back then I didn't know what was going on, The first seven time I have try it in the player, it did not play at all, and the same thing happen. Altogether I try the disc in the player 22 times with in a week and three days. It only worked three different times in the player. Then my guess was that either the disc hates my player the player hates the disc or this disc of True Grit out of so many made has problems. I just return it to Costco in the end, but before doing that I did try the disc on my friend's PS3, and it work the first time in there. I also tryed it on my uncle's Sony Blu-Ray player, it also worked the first time in there.

Move forward to mid August 2011 certain Blu-Rays I got way before the release of True Grit(remake) had worked in the my Pioneer player with no problems. The first one I notice with that problem was Casino, I had got that back in early April of last year, and it had always worked. Ever since mid August more and more started not to play on the player, with the same problem as True Grit. What I have notice was when it would not play and with the same messages is that there is no fan like spinning sound, when it does disc loading. I have also sat in front of the Blu-Ray player, with the TV sound turn down to listen and notice no fan like spinning sound. When I first had this problem I had also found two forums with sections devoted to my player. One is a section at http://www.avsforum.com, with 992 pages, and at http://www.blu-ray.com. As time went on the Blu-Rays that did not play on the Pioneer, that had worked before with no problems are The Magnificent Seven, Cop Out, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Never Say Never Again(sometime works sometime don't), Spy Game, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard With A Vengeance(sometime works sometime don't), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I Have not try all of my Blu-Rays in the player. Sometime new ones I get will not play the first time in the player like Taken, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, X-Men: First Class and The Guns Of Navarone. Sometime there are new one that will still play first time in the player, like Cowboy And Aliens. It just will it still play as time go by say two and half months later.

What the people on the two forums have said was either one of these is the problem

The laser lens is dirty (Use a Blu-ray laser lens cleaner to clen it the kind that come with a brush. IF it more stubborn, open up the player and use Q-tip to clean it.)

The laser lens is starting to die

The drive could be starting to die( one person said the drive for the model I have, have known problem)

They say it has nothing to do with the firmware update, which I did do since I updated mine from 1.65 to 1.71 when there was problems with playing True Grit and then to 1.72 when my older Blu-Rays started not to play that use to with no problem. And still the problem is still there for me.

One thing no one have said was how to tell is the laser lens just dirty and it not starting to die at all.

When I told my uncle about it, he told me it parts can't be dying at all. It must be like a record player when there a little piece of bread crum on it, it will not play the record in it right way. I have yet to buy a blu-ray laser lens cleaner and try that. I know all those disc will work in another player. Right now 100% no problems with the DVD and CD side of the Blu-Ray player.

The best thing for you is to ask a home theater expert or store a worker that sell this kind of stuff like at Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi or those good mom and pop kinds. Also try the disc at friend and relative's player to see does it work. Last of all look for forums devoted to your player, and post questions

Should I buy a Blu-Ray player?

Nick

I bought a flat screen on Black Friday that I just recently found out has HD. I was thinking it would be pretty sweet to watch "Wanted" or "Step Brothers" in true HD quality, but is Blu-Ray on it's way out?
-Nick

Answer
Blu-Ray is definitely worth it! Go into Best Buy and take a look at one that is playing, but I warn you you will probably end up buying one like I did! I went in for some 9 volt batteries and left with a Sony! Of course keep in mind, BB probably has it running on a 1080p hdtv so depending on the size and resolution of your tv, it may not be as sharp, but its awesome.

Help with PS3 Slim Blu-ray problems?

Roland

Everytime I play my Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray, a purple screen briefly displays, goes away, and everything else plays normally (for the most part). Also, once or twice when the movie was playing, the screen went completely black for a couple of seconds, then the movie kept playing as normal. DVDs and games work fine with no problems, though. Is this normal? Have any of you experienced the same thing with Blu-ray movies? I have a 26'' Bravia, which connects to the PS3 Slim with an official Sony HDMI cable (1.3 version/category 2), and I have the resolution set to 720p.

Answer
yeah its the blu ray, dont ask me how but some blu ray wont work in all blu ray players, its a fault that shops no about if you take the blu ray back to the store theykk gvive you a exchange, you might find slum dog wont play either.

How to rid of black bars on blu ray disc?

Dane

I know this is a frequently asked question, and I know the difference between a 1.78:1 aspect ratio versus a 2.4:1 aspect ratio. What I don't understand is how I can watch Star Trek on Blu Ray and get black bars, and when I watch Star Trek on cable there are no black bars; only full screen high definition. What do cable providers do to eliminate black bars and still deliver a great high definition picture? Can I do what they do? I loved watching The Lord Of The Rings full screen on cable way more than a black bar version. Please Help!

Answer
Your TV or player may have a zoom option. You have to look through the menus. Keep in mind that a rectangular peg will not fit in a square hole. The only way you, the cable company or anyone can make the screen fill vertically is by cropping off part of the picture on the ends or by distorting the picture. So while the cable version may look great, you are missing things on the sides of the picture. Sometimes these things may be important to the plot.

The "Black Bar" version is the way the producers of the film intended it, the fact your TV isn't that shape can't be changed. If you were to go to a projection system instead of a TV you have more control. In that case you can use a 2.4:1 screen and never have black bars top/bottom. You will have black bars on the sides for 1.78:1 material but you can use motorized framing to eliminate that.

I know how you feel, you feel like you are missing something in those black bars or at the very least you are getting a smaller TV than you paid for. You are missing something on the cable "full screen" version but I guess you don't "miss" what you don't see. So, look for the zoom option in both your TV and in your player one or both should have the ability to either stretch the picture vertically or zoom it in both axis which is what you want.

One problem is that you may need to change it back when you watch cable unless you can control settings for individual sources. Otherwise the cable company or broadcast company crops it for you and you also crop or zoom it. Then you really miss a lot of the picture.

the xbox 360 vs the ps3 debate?

Fred Sawye

Ok this fight has been going on for a long time now.
To get this straight wii is the most successful, ps3 is the most advanced, and xbox is somewhere in the middle. Neither console is perfect if they were, there would only be 1 console.

Now some of these are opinions but a lot are facts and u guys let me know what you think:

ps3 has a wider variety of games. Kid friendly games like mod nation races and little big planet just can't compare to the all T and M games of the xbox

There are recent players list, xobox marketplace/playstation store, friends lsits, gamescores, internet access, netflix, hulu, etc. all common but slightly different

Ps3 has better exclusives. Forget about halo gears of war and fable first 2 halos and first gears of war are for pc anyway.
Ps3 exclusives:
Killzone
God of war
Gran turismo 5
Mgs4
Warhawk
Lbp
Infamous

Only reason xbox has more sales in us is cuz its an american company, worlwide sony trumps

Xbox runs on dvdâs while ps3 runs on blu-ray, which mean ps3 has higher quality graphics potential
That also mean that xboxs disks, have a disk capacity of 4.7 gb, while ps3 is anywhere as of now up to 50, in the future Blu-ray disks will contain much more than that even
Mgs4 and infamous are only exclusive to ps3 because of the disk capacity issue, it couldnt fit
Also because of this xbox can play dvds while ps3 plays blu-ray which makes it worth more
And plz dont say "oh thats cuz sony pays them its all just loops"
no its not, and microsoft fan boys should talk since microsoft bought the halo name before it was even out
RROD its not fixed completely. There is still a 15% failure rate to the 8% ps3 and the 1-9% wii
Even if xbox live is better its 50 bucks a year i'd take free anyday since it still works nothing is wrong with it
Also while you just have to connect a ps3 controller and play while its recharging,
Xbox controllers run on batteries, sure you can use rechargable batteries but its still more of a hastle
Also its not hard at all to connect ps3 to the internet, it doesnât cost extra, and it took me less than a minute
Sure theres kinect, but ps3 has move which has those awsome squishy balls on the controller

Check the cnet review they rated ps3 higher than 360

Ok let me know what u thinik i wanna here some opinons

Answer
The Sony move been there done that with the wii, if you can't afford 60 bucks a year for the best online service on all systems the you have money issues. The exclusives you listed are not all that great example infamous way over rated kill zone was lame my fave games on my ps3 are uncharted series and little big planet series. Oh and fact most third party games are made for Xbox first then are ported to the PS3 and the PSN store is a joke compared to Xbox live and PS Plus is a joke and a waste of money and let's not for get the hacking on the PS3 which was down almost a month you get what you pay for. Blu ray is pretty cool can't complaint there and no I'm not a fan boy I own all 3 systems and enjoy them in different ways.

Should I get a PS3 slim or Xbox 360 slim?

Q. I've had a PS2 for the past 7 years or so, my dad is buying me a PS3 slim ( 120GB version for $299 ) or an Xbox 360 slim ( $299 ), he's letting me decide. Which one should I get? I've done some research, the systems are very similar in a lot of things. PS3 has better graphics, cool games, a blu-ray player, and free online play. Xbox 360 has cool games, better online play, and has sold more. Honestly, the most important thing for me is the online play issue. Is the "better" online play for the Xbox worth the $50 a year? Also, which has better exclusive games ( could you list 4-5 for each one that are exclusive to that system and are great ).

P.S. I'm turning 15 =D, I've had a PS2 for a while, but its pretty inferior now. I can get rated R games, ect., so no concern there. Anyways, honest and well-thought out answers are appreciated.
Also, I know there have been some questions on this. I just want this answer to focus specifically on the 1. online play issue ( $$$$ for better online play, or free online play that is worse ), and 2. Specific games for each system ( ex. Halo franchise for Xbox ).

Answer
as i will always say ps3 is better for many reasons
the only reason to have a xbox is to play like gears of war
the advantage for you is also that you know the controller of the ps3 already as the ps3 controller is like the same as the ps2
the ps3 also gives you better graphics and its free to play online plus its more than just gaming
if you want to play mw2 then be with the ps3 as its still alive the online play (i should know my boyfriend played online today)
the only reason why xbox sold more is because ps3 did cost more so people had the cheaper console back then
the only fault i can give the ps3 is that it got recently hacked but sony has told they have sorted the problem and they gave ps3 owners some free games , films and some membership that gives you discounts to some games
i cant really say much about the xbox because i dont own one ;/ but i dont hear good things about it
like having to pay to go online and the the xbox kinect does not work properly
its up to you tbh

P.S i am turning 17 soon ;D 6th of july ;)

EDIT!
ps3 is better if you dont want to spend money each month / year to play online a
and i am not going to give you the list of games but i will give you some examples
ps3 - , god of war , kill zone ,Final Fantasy Versus XIII <--( not out yet but hell yes cant wait)
xbox , halo , gears of war , Fable

Can I watch Blu Ray on 720p?

chris deni

Is it worth it to buy a blu ray for a 720p plasma tv?

Answer
Blu-Ray players and discs add up to a lot of money, but the improvement from 480i (Standard TV) to 720p is amazing.

If you have a 1080p/i TV, Blu Ray is a must have. 720p is also pretty high definition. It just depends on if you are willing to pay for the HD.

P.S. PS3s do a fantastic job making standard DVDs look good on bigger screens. I have one my self and don't use the Xbox to play regular DVDs anymore. You also have the option of BluRay and games with the PS3 ;)

Should I buy a Blu Ray or HD DVD player?

Mr. Indepe

Who do you think will win this "war"?

Answer
Go for Blu Ray. The answer came out a few days ago when Warner Brothers decided that it would go the way of Blu Ray. Warner Brothers sells more DVD movies than any other entertainment label......if the elephant wants to go Blu Ray, then the rest of the industry will have to follow.

Check out the source below for the convincer of the other names alligning with Blu Ray.

--edited-- I don't know which bozo has been voting thumbs-down for many of the Blu-Ray responses...but they should read the valid reasons as to why Blu-ray is winning and will win. Warner Bros (the biggest DVD seller) recently chose Blu-Ray...coupled with the fact that Sony's coup with the PS3 helped convince a lot of gamers to go Blu-Ray as well....it was like a foot in the door. Considering Sony lost the Beta/VHS war....this time around they got a little more smart about it. :) But definitely, having Warner Brothers on board is the convincer of which direction the technology will go.

Good day,

Audio problems with Blue Ray player.?

Mike

I am having trouble with my new Blue Ray player. When watching a movie, the music and sound effect volume levels are fine but the dialogue volume is low. This happens when using either the TV's built in speakers or headphones. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to adjust the volume levels to be equal?

Answer
Look in your Blu-Ray audio setup menu & look for a choice that addresses "dynamic range", choose "compress".

Blu Ray Player remote stopped being able to control volume on LG smart tv.?

Alex Hunte

Up until a month ago the Blu ray remote worked fine when controlling the tv volume. Please answer because I am sick of using the crappy magic remote just to raise or lower the volume on the tv.

Answer
I think you must first "un-pair" the magic remote from the TV before using the blu ray remote. This is done by pressing the Back and Home buttons at the same time for about 5-10 seconds (you'll know it's unpaired because the arrow will disappear and doesn't reappear when you shake the remote).

My Sony DVD blue ray player audio is out of sync with my LCD video tv.?

Steve

I have been racking my brain to try and correct but no matter what I have done and read I have not found a solution. My TV is a Samsung, but I don't believe it makes a difference. Has anyone run into this problem and has a solution? Thanks.

Answer
usually when the blu ray player and TV are the same brand, they will sync up, but different brands do not. So here's what's going on. Most LCD TVs have lag, and it's really bad when 120hz or 240hz is active. It takes extra time to complete the calculations for 'frame interpolation' that's what 120hz TVs are really doing. Get into the TV menu and turn off this feature. There are other issues that could cause this, but this is the most common.

I have a Philips LED/LCD TV and a Philips blu ray. When the TV is in 60hz or 120hz, the audio is always in sync. But when I had a Sony LCD with the same player, audio was in sync for 60hz, and out of sync with 120hz.

Is the Dynex® - 32" Class / 720p / 60Hz / LCD HDTV Blu-Ray compatible?

Tammie

Here's the link to the TV on Bestbuy.com

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26%23174%3B+-+32%22+Class+/+720p+/+60Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9134901.p?id=1218054462391&skuId=9134901&st=dynex

Answer
A Blu Ray player will play on any TV with an HDMI port. That Dynex model has 3 HDMI ports.

But I would seriously discourage getting this model as your primary Blu Ray TV. It's only 720p (1280x720) instead of 1080p (1920x1080).

It also features a 60Hz response rate. Older non-widescreen TVs often had 30Hz response rates. High end HDTVs can have 120-240Hz response rates. That is the amount of frames moving past your eyes per second. 120Hz is considered a minimum for a quality HDTV.

So if this TV is replacing an older non-widescreen TV and it will only get moderate use, go for it. If this is going in your living room and you plan to watch Blu Rays with your family, this is not an appropriate model.

HD Dvd & Blu-ray?

tferia74

Hi, I have 2 main questions.....
1. Who do you think will win the race between HD Dvd and Blu-ray, and why? Who's winning so far?
2. Why are Blu-ray players so expensive vs. HD dvd players are so cheap?
I just bought an HD dvd player and I hope I made the right choice. Thanks.

Answer
Sorry to say, but Blu-ray Disc is the winning format.
Recently the HD DVD promotional group had a major blow just before the CES 2008, when Time Warner, including Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema and HBO said that they would be supporting Blu-ray Disc exclusively from May 31st 2008.
This means, that Blu-ray Disc has 70% of the market share of Hi-def discs being sold, with HD DVD having only 30%.

For you interest the studios supporting Blu-ray Disc are
Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema, HBO, 20th Century Fox, Buena Vista (Walt Disney, Pixar Animation, Miramax, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures), Sony Pictures (Columbia, Tristar, ScreenGems), MGM and Lionsgate.

While HD DVD has only Universal Studios, Viacom Paramount (Paramount Studios, Dreamworks, Dreamworks Annimation, MTV), and some other minor companies.

Also now, the average sales in the US, since this for Blu-ray is 83% of the market, with recent statistics saying around 93% of recent hardware sales were Blu-ray Disc players, since the Time Warner move, excluding the world's best, most upgradable Blu-ray Player, the Playstation 3, which many people buy.

Also in Japan 90% of people, are with Blu-ray, and 95% in Australia, and around 80% (I think) in Europe.

Also video rental chains Video Ezy in Australia, and Blockbuster stopped HD DVD rentals, and Target are now also Blu-ray Exclusive. You should see the Blu vs HD clips on Youtube, there was a hilarious based on Hitler, on the fall of HD DVD.

Now, HD DVD is really falling into the Betamax pit, especially, as not many companies endorsed HD DVD, like the Betamax, unlike Blu-ray and VHS, which have a lost of licensies. Although HD DVD has the backing of the DVD Forum, the Blu-ray Disc Association is now equaly as powerful, and large as DVD Forum now, with major electronics giants like Sony, Phillips, Panasonic, Hitatci, JVC, Dell, HP, Sharp, and LG supporting it.

In the Betamax/VHS wars, VHS started it's winning streak when it had around 70% of the market, which now Blu-ray has since Warner desicision.

Now based on reports, Intel(R) Supports both formats, and Microsoft still hasn't denyed the possibility of including an external Blu-ray Disc drive for the XBOX 360,instead of HD DVD.

When another major company drops, it will be the final death blow to HD DVD.
"The Future is Blu"

And about the prices of Blu-ray, it's only expensive as it's a new technology, like DVD was when it was released. Anyway Blu-ray is a far better technology, and the Blu-ray Disc Association don't have to rely on cheap players of the mass market adoption of Blu-ray Disc.

What should i get a blu-ray dvd player or a hd dvd player?

Robert

Answer
I am assuming you have an HDTV so Blu-Ray is really the only choice to make. At this moment there is not even 1 Studio who is HD DVD exclusive anymore. Paramount and Universal have commitment to keep supporting HD DVD in previously planned HD DVD promotions so they aren't abandoning it yet but as of yesterday Variety reported that both are no longer exclusively HD DVD. Meanwhile Blu-Ray enjoys exclusive support from Sony, Disney, Fox, Lionsgate and Warner sister companies New Line and HBO are also shifting allegiance to Blu-ray.
The war is only over when Toshiba says so but retailers may force the their hand. They're unlikely to keep devoting premium shelf space to a dying format, and at this point, the odds are not in HD DVD's favor.

Can I do this with a Blu-Ray Disc ?

ROBO731

I am planning on writing several files to a rewritable blu-ray disc. I am wondering:

1) I want to add files to the disc almost every week (if this is not possible I can do it every couple months). How many times can I add files to the disc?

2) Can my computer write to a blu-ray Disc? It is a Dell Inspiron N7110 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The disc drive is called BD-Rom and has a Blu-ray symbol on the side.

3) Can I add MKV (matroska) files to the disc?

4) If I add MKV's to the disc will a blu-ray player and PS3 be able to read them? If not, What filetypes can a these players read?

I will probably come up with even more questions after I post this, but please answer all or as many of them as you can. Any help will be appreciated.

Answer
Blu ray disc is just a larger container for data versus say a blank DVD. You can put any kind of file on it that you want, in any format.

You can add files to a disc from time to time, but it has to be a rewriteable version of blu ray, not just a write once BD-R. I believe it's called BD-RE.

Your blu ray drive is most likely only for reading blu ray, not writing/burning. ROM is read only memory. So you'll have to buy another blu ray disc drive that can write to a disc.

Does the Wifi dongle for the Samsung 3600 Blu-ray Player work with the Samsung 1600 Blu-ray player?

Drey

I'm buying a blu-ray player tomorrow. My friend is giving me a wi-fi dongle that came with his Samsung 3600 Blu-ray player cause he doesn't plan to use it. I do, but can I use it with the Samsung 1600 model?

Answer
The 1600 will not connect to the internet for streaming movies, the 3600 will

So you won't have a usb port to make the blu ray work wireless

Buy the 3600, the dongle costs $70 and you have a free one. If you do, you will have a blu ray player that can receive netflix, blockbuster, youtube and pandora radio. It's worth the extra money

Blu-ray player?

hey guys

what is the best Blu-Ray player in the market?

thanks

Answer
one that can play BOTH blu-ray and HD DVD. ps3 is definately not the best BLU RAY player, but it is way more than just a blu ray player(plays games, free wifi). plus, it is the cheapest blu ray player (for some weird reason), so it definately is the best.

What`s so great about blu ray players?

Blondies a

Oh and another question, How big is a 19inch TV? Is that really small?

Answer
Blu-Ray is 1920x1080 resolution, so it's much more detailed than the 720x480 resolution of DVDs and the standard-definition or even low-definition signal stored on VHS tapes. Blu-Ray also support up to 7.1 channel audio, as opposed to DVD's 5.1.

A 19" TV is pretty small. A 19" 4:3 (non-widescreen) TV used to be fairly common in bedrooms and what not, and 19" used to be a common size on CRT computer monitors from the mid-'90s on, but now with the advent of widescreen (16:9 and 16:10), a 19" TV is pretty small (a 19" widescreen TV has a smaller screen area than a 19" fullscreen TV). Suitable for a bedroom or kitchen, but certainly way too small for a living room or anything. About the size of a typical modern computer monitor.

Ok i am looking for a blu ray player but reading some things online has confused me. I have a 52 inch 1080p LCD Samsung tv....I was going to buy a Sony Blu Ray player for my living room. But i read something about maybe it wont play regular dvds....cds....or some of the newer blu ray disks...due to profiles??? i dont understand that...But alot of answers are buy a ps3..because it updates...i dont really play games and this is for the living room. If a ps3 is the way to go because it updates thats fine...But if i can get a normal sony blu ray player that will play...cds...dvds..and all the blu ray disks...i would rather go that way...can anyone shed some light on this for me..Thanks..

Answer
All Blu-Ray1.0 players will play the featured movie of any blu-ray disc. If you try to play a disc that is greater than profile 1.0. You will lose the special pip features and online content. Most movies are 1.0 profiles. There are a few coming out that uses profile 1.1 (Sunshine - Fox network)

1.1 adds pip for a small video screen while the main movie is playing in the background.

2.0 adds BD-Live online content via an Ethernet port. You can only get these extras from the Internet. great for new games. Not much you can do with movies in my opinion.

3.0 adds BD-Audio only. High definition audio. Not sure how this is a benefit. My guess is 7.1 surround sound music in your living room.

Sony is coming out with 2 new standalone Blu-Ray players that are Profile 2.0. The BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 models. It has the Internet connection for update and is not a game system. Retail price is $400 and $500 respectively. Street price should be lower.

Can a windows 7 computer replace a PS3 or xbox, Tivo hd, and a blu-ray and dvd player?

TOOTAl2

Answer
not really. windows 7 is able to replace your DVD player and Blu-ray player if you hook it to your television and are willing to go through the widows boot process anytime you want to watch a movie. There are DVR programs you can install that give you DVR functionality but they lack the easy interface of a dedicated TIVO. you can often find PC versions of XBOX games because they are both microsoft products but Playstation keeps a pretty tight riegn on their gaming franchises so even though you can download PS3 emulators (illegally mind you) they will never match up to using the hardware the game was designed for. If you choose to go this rought then you need a PC with Windows 7 or the new windows 8 demo version, a TV tuner card, a blu-ray drive, a PS3 emulator (again illegal), a bluetooth adaptor (for linking your PS3 and XBOX controllers), and DVR software. Your probably looking at $500-$800 depending on brand and you still would have to have a computer that has a strong enough processor and enough memory to run all of this.

Is there an emulator software for PS2 or PS3?

robruiz19

Where can I download it? and some details of the software...

Answer
no emulator for PS3 im for sure, and there is no way you can pull that iso or nfo image writing **** either, the damn blu ray player disables everything us hackers find enjoyable.

ps2 emulator.... hm...... well emulators aren't a very popular way of playing games on the computer anymore. but i will look into it more for you.

EDIT: holy jesus my savior! i stand corrected i just found a software for the PS2 emulator

[{Link}] http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/ps2/pcsx2.html

i am not sure if it is good or virus free so install at own risk. Happy Hunting!

blu-ray zoom feature?

math geek

I just got a Blu-ray player for Christmas (Samsung P1600) and I was wondering if anyone knows if it has a zoom feature so that the movies will fill the entire screen? I know regular DVD players do, but is that something that is common to Blu-ray?

Answer
The blu ray zoom feature should be common, but it zooms into the video so that you dont get a full 1080p video on the screen, and you dont get to see the WHOLE video only the part you zoomed in on.

My Blu ray player is not letting me view the blu-ray films at full 16:9 ratio that fills the screen; there are?

dave a

I have bought a Samsung BD-P1500 blu ray player and installed all the latest firmware upgrades via my network.

I have a Samsung LE37A559p tv that can handle 1080p and links up to my player via an HDMI cable

I have set all the featured in my blu ray player's menu to 16:9 wide aspect ratio and the resolution to 1080p - also I have got my TV on the same settings

I have currently watched "The Dark Knight" and "War" and both of them have black curtains at the top and bottom of the screen

Although on the back of both of the blu-ray disc's cases, it says that they are fully widescreen, this is not the case, and it is getting annoying

But either my TV and/or my player and/or the blu ray discs have the ability to be viewed in widescreen because in "The Dark Knight", whenever a landscape view is displayed (eg a view of the city), the curtains dissappear.

This is annoying and has ultimately made my purchase totally worthless because i can't help but not appreciate the quality of the content on screen when those curtains are there.

Please may someone provide a reason or solution to my problem because at the moment,

I am really annoyed that my Xbox 360 that can stretch films to fill up the screen provides a better viewing experience than my blu ray player thats sole purpose is to create the optimum in high defenition viewing to the user.
Well, on the back of the "War" case, it says that it is "widescreen version 16:9 2.40:1"

Surely this must mean that it should in fact fill up the screen? But all my display settings are set properly, so why does it still not?
Well I cannot see an 'aspect' button on my remote

I would have really like that feature even if it distorted my picture

the first thing i thought about the dark knight is "how annoying are the changes between the display"

i guess im gonna have to wait and see if the directors of movies come to their senses and film in a proper aspect ratio so that the film is displayed on the full screen

the curtains only minimise the viewing experience and make blu-ray not worth the money

Answer
Some widescreen DVDs and blu rays will still have small black bars on some material.

Check the DVD box for aspect ratio.

If the ratio is 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 you will have small black bars top and bottom. This is normal on widescreen HDTVs.

Some movies and virtually all TV shows shot wide like Weeds, The Office, Battlestar Galactica etc are shot at 1.85:1, 1.77:1 and 1.78:1 those will all fill up your screen completely.

Full screen material like full screen DVDs and standard def TV show properly on your TV will have black bars on the left and right.

Also note, most HDTV have a zoom or fill option to fill the screen however, you must remember that when you do that, you are going to chop off part of the image no matter what.

I hope this clears things up.
