I am buying a Blu-Ray Player. I want to know what i need to look for in one. Could you also link me a few nice players too? Please help me out.

Answer
Look for price, picture quality, load time and audio format compatibility.

The #1 Blu-ray player on cnet is the Panasonic DMP-BD35. The reason this is so well reviewed is because it's a fair price, it has decent load times, good picture quality and, if you have a home theater, it is capable of decoding the HD audio formats. Because this player has received such good reviews it's in high demand right now. For example, Amazon had it for $226 on December 10th, but is currently listing it for $399. That's $100 above MSRP and $50 more than it's big brother the BD55 (which is actually a better player).

The other top two Blu-ray players are the Sony BDP-S350 and the Samsung BD-P1500. My only complaint with those two is that they aren't able to decode all HD audio formats. (This deficit has no impact unless you have a surround sound system.)

So those three are the basic models. If you want additional features, like Netflix streaming or 7.1 analog connectors you can step up to the next tier.

Blu-ray.com is an excellent source for all things Blu-ray. Here's their list of BD players:

In my opinion the best website for electronics reviews is cnet.com. Here's their take on both the best Blu-ray players and the best Blu-ray players under (or formerly under) $250:

Should I replace my receiver to get hdmi?

I just picked up a sony hdtv and will get a blu ray player to acheive 1080p. My Denon 3803 doesn't have an hdmi jack. Do I need to replace it (like the best buy guy said) for best results or will running hdmi to the tv and using the audio outputs from the tv to the denon work ok? Would there be a time lag?

Answer
I would say no. Lag time may be an issue, but can probably be compensated for by the TV or BluRay.

There are 2 main things you will miss out on by not upgrading:

1) Only HDMI will carry TruDolby HD and DTS-Master HD. These are the super high-def, lossless formats that can support uncompressed 7.1. Most material is not and will not be available in True 7.1 uncompressed for a couple years. So your digital inputs on the Receiver are fine for Dolby Digital and DT.

2) Convenience of HDMI switching. i.e. plug all your stuff into your Receiver, then one HDMI to your TV. Saves money on cables and is a cleaner install, if you have a lot of stuff (xBox, DVD, Ipod, Bluray, Wii, etc...).

Hope that helps!

Edit - BTW if your receiver doesn't have HDMI then it won't have 7.1 analog inputs either (too old) so that's kind of dumb.
