Blu-Ray is 1920x1080 resolution, so it's much more detailed than the 720x480 resolution of DVDs and the standard-definition or even low-definition signal stored on VHS tapes. Blu-Ray also support up to 7.1 channel audio, as opposed to DVD's 5.1.

A 19" 4:3 (non-widescreen) TV used to be fairly common in bedrooms and what not, and 19" used to be a common size on CRT computer monitors from the mid-'90s on, but now with the advent of widescreen (16:9 and 16:10), a 19" TV is pretty small (a 19" widescreen TV has a smaller screen area than a 19" fullscreen TV). Suitable for a bedroom or kitchen, but certainly way too small for a living room or anything. About the size of a typical modern computer monitor.

Ok i am looking for a blu ray player but reading some things online has confused me. I have a 52 inch 1080p LCD Samsung tv....I was going to buy a Sony Blu Ray player for my living room. But i read something about maybe it wont play regular dvds....cds....or some of the newer blu ray disks...due to profiles??? i dont understand that...But alot of answers are buy a ps3..because it updates...i dont really play games and this is for the living room. If a ps3 is the way to go because it updates thats fine...But if i can get a normal sony blu ray player that will play...cds...dvds..and all the blu ray disks...i would rather go that way...can anyone shed some light on this for me..Thanks..

All Blu-Ray1.0 players will play the featured movie of any blu-ray disc. If you try to play a disc that is greater than profile 1.0. You will lose the special pip features and online content. Most movies are 1.0 profiles. There are a few coming out that uses profile 1.1 (Sunshine - Fox network)
1.1 adds pip for a small video screen while the main movie is playing in the background.
2.0 adds BD-Live online content via an Ethernet port. You can only get these extras from the Internet. great for new games. Not much you can do with movies in my opinion.
3.0 adds BD-Audio only. High definition audio. Not sure how this is a benefit. My guess is 7.1 surround sound music in your living room.
Sony is coming out with 2 new standalone Blu-Ray players that are Profile 2.0. The BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 models. It has the Internet connection for update and is not a game system. Retail price is $400 and $500 respectively. Street price should be lower.
