Is the quality of movie playback of a blu ray movie on the ps3 as good as a stand alone blu ray player?

Answer
The BEST Blu-ray player is the Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD (according to Consumer Reports -- this is the US version of the BDP-LX70) -- largely because of the high-end video processing built in -- but the PS3 at about $400 is a fraction of the $1000 US price, and the choice of many home theatre installers.

One advantage of the PS3 -- ignoring it's gaming ability -- is that it can be updated fvia firmware and has gone from a profile 1.0 to 1.1 player in recent months and is now profile 2.0 (The final step -- which adds Internet connectivity).

Many early adopter consumers -- who tend to be technically literate -- consider the PS3 the best player.

The quality of the video image from the PS3 is as good or better than most stand alone players ... certainly anything in the price range.

The only decision is whether you can accept the looks of the PS3 ... although some people simply hide it -- and remote control it -- rather than adding to their other equipment.

What does an HDMI cable look like? To connect a Blu Ray to an HD-ready TV.?

I see some that are like USB ports, somet that are mini, some that are monster, some that are three color terminals bunched into one. I don't know which one to get to connect my Blu Ray to the HD TV.

Answer
It sounds like you are confusing HDMI and other video cable formats. See the link for pictures of various video interconnect formats -- in increasing order of image quality -- composite (Yellow RCA), S-video (round, 4 or 7 pins), Component (red/blue/green triple RCA) and HDMI (flat, 19 pin connector). Note that some formats are video only (and therefore are usually used along with one of the audio only connectors ... also shown in the pictures at the link), while HDMI is both video and audio.

Blu-ray players typically have several different options for connection to other equipment (e.g. A/V receiver, HDTV). Any will work, but it is generally preferable to use the one that gives the best image quality that your equipment accepts ... in this case HDMI.

Note that HDMI comes in several (actually 4, but 2 are common) formats ... for different purposes. All Home video cables use the larger format shown in the picture at the link, but a mini HDMI plug format is used for some digital cameras and camcorders.

Finally, note that HDMI is an evolving standard, and when shopping you will come across references to HDMI version 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4. They are all basically the same for most purposes (the later versions support advanced features that most consumers don't need/use), but given the choice look for cables that claim to be certified to "Category 2" against HDMI version 1.3 or "High speed" against version 1.4. You don't need to spend more than about $10 for an HDMI cable for most uses. See 2nd link.
