Is the PS3 as good as a stand-alone 3D Blu-ray player? Yes.
Is the PS3 the best Blu-ray player on the market? No. It used to be, it no longer is.
The PS3 has all options available on 3D, except for a couple which can't be done because the PS3 uses a 1.3 HDMI port instead of a 1.4a HDMI port.
The PS3 can handle everything, except it reverts to 2D when the PS3 menu (triangle) is brought up (other stand-alone Blu-ray players stay in 3D), and the PS3 can NOT output HD audio (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD) when playing 3D Blu-ray movies (it does output in HD audio with regular Blu-rays).
If you don't have HD audio (7.1 surround sound) or care about the menu going to 2D when accessing it, then the PS3 works just fine like any other stand-alone Blu-ray player.
I have a 7.1 surround sound system, so in order to take full advantage of 3D Blu-rays that have HD audio, I bought a stand-alone 3D Blu-ray player. Not all 3D Blu-rays have HD audio, so for those that don't, I watch them on the PS3 (the 2D menu doesn't bother me).
Also, if you have a TV that automatically detects 1.4 HDMI devices (I do), then all you have to do is turn it on and the TV knows to go to 3D when a 3D Blu-ray is played. Since the PS3 has a 1.3 HDMI port, you have to manually turn on 3D on the TV (again, not a big problem for me).
