Answer
Both are profile 1.0
Both use similar chipsets: PDF here:

The Sony will playback BD-9 discs (dual layer DVD with blu-ray video files)
The Samsung does TrueHD and DTS HD-MA bitstream
Sony HDMI version 1.1,; Samsung HDMI version 1.3a
Samsung has an ethernet port
Samsung has a smaller footprint

Tech-wise, the Samsung is better, but the difference is minimal. Truthfully, whichever one you can find cheaper is probably the better one in this case. They are both just so similar that, unless something mentioned above is a major deciding factor, the cheaper one would probably be fine.

Firmware updates would be done via any of the following:
Ethernet port
USB port after downloading from support site
SD card slot
Disc sent from manufacturer or downloaded and burned (usually CD-R)

What is the best Blu-Ray player for a 720p tv?

Eight Bit

What type of player should I be trying to get.

Answer
LG and Panasonic tend to be the higher rated brands.

You have 3 different levels of players to choose from:

* Basic players
* 'Smart' players with wireless that include streaming services
* 3D players

Unless you have a 3D television, I recommend you purchase just a good basic player. If you decide you want 'smart' features, look into a small media server like the WD TV Live box for $99. This has more apps than any BluRay player, gets updated more frequently and in general works a lot better than the apps "added in" to a player.

Try www.bestblueraydeals.com for Amazon vendors who offer slight discounts.

For an HDMI cable, I like the "Media Bridge" brand from Amazon. Prices run $9-$20 depending on length.

Hope this helps.
