I am confused. I have a Philips blu ray player with the following audio outputs: Analog audio Left/Right out, HDMI output, Component Video output, Digital coaxial out, Ethernet, Analog audio 5.1 channel out. Can anyone please tell me if I can connect it directly to a 5.1 channel speaker system ? (that is, with out a separate receiver).

Thank you.

Answer
You need to connect it to an amplifier or amplifier/receiver that handles 5.1 Dolby surround. The bluray player only has a pre-amplifier built in and that only supplies enough signal for the amplifier to use to produce the sound. The player itself cannot drive speakers. You don't need anything really fancy.

can a dolby pro logic receiver provide legacy 4 channel surround sound from a blu-ray DVD player?

I have an older Dolby Pro Logic A/V receiver - circa 1992 technology. Can I use it to get basic surround sound if I connect it to a blu-ray DVD players analog audio outputs?

Answer
Yes. You only need an analog stereo signal input to the receiver and the receiver set to ProLogic. The effect is 4 channel matrix surround, but it's still a form of surround.

That all said, unless you have a fair size HDTV why would you be buying Blu-ray? It's kind of like having a GPS on your horse drawn buggy ... you can do it, but it only gives you a fraction of the potential capability.

Consider buying a newer receiver ... one with at least an optical or digital coax input and with dolby digital decoding ability. You can probably find one a few years old for under $100.
