Roku Streaming??????

Ironmaiden

Has anyone used Roku streaming before? I saw it on financial savings guide. I'm not sure how it works or how much it is.

Has anyone that has used it, please tell me how it is?

Answer
It its most basic form (definition) it was a netflix player. It made it so you could stream netflix to your TV. Now many devices do it (but will different success rates and features). If you do not want to go out and buy a $300 gaming system, a new TV, or blu ray, it is still the cheapest way to go.

There is the basic models (older and newer) that are good at/for streaming. You can stream Netflix ($8 a month) Hulu Plus ($8 a month), Amazon Prime ($7 a month), Popcornflix (free), Crackle (free), and other channels (think of a channel as an app on other devices. They are not real TV channels).

Then there are the more advanced ones like the New Roku 2 XS and the slightly older version Roku XDS (which is by far the best of any Roku tho not the newest version). The advantage they have is the usb port. With this you can have all your pictures on your TV, in a slide show form (must easier to see then a bunch of people bent over a single photo). You can play all your music over your surround sound system. Plus the ability to watch movies (home or hollywood) on your TV. So any on your computer can now be seen on your TV.

The XDS is the most compatible of them all. It will do the older rca composite connections, component connections, and HDMI. It also has digital optical out so you can connect it to your surround sound system. It has the 12 button remote with instant replay (vs the 9 button remote) plus the USB port.

Over all they do very well at streaming. Very good at HD and surround sound. I have had no problems other then Hulu Plus is a little buggy. If you are big into playing your own movies that you made or downloaded from the internet, then the advanced ones are the way to go. If you are more about streaming then the basic model is the better option.

Sony streamer vs Roku which is better?

Answer
Purchased Sony SMP-N100 Streaming Player with Wi-Fi months ago, and it always works great. Using it wireless with a Zyxel X-550 and I can stream 20M from my pc full hd and 5:1 dolby from a dvd I converted for testing the DLNA support. Video and music from windows 7 works great. Just need to setup the videos and music in windows media player and they all show up on the SMP-N100.
