So there is a speaker system that is not sold in the USA and i found a site called "Lelong" which is based in Malaysia that will ship it to me. First, will the speakers even work when plugged into a US power outlet? and second, is this just a stupid idea?

Malaysian power is 240V/50Hz. American power is 110V/60Hz.
You don't give the make and model of the speaker system, so it's not possible to give more than general advice. If these are just speakers that connect to a US sourced AV receiver that you own or will buy then it doesn't matter about voltage. However, if this is a home theatre kit where the head unit/amp/disc player plugs in to the mains then you could have problems. It depends on the brand and spec. Panasonic fits a 220-240V / 50Hz power supply. Philips fits a multi-range power supply (110V-240V / 50~60Hz). The Philips will power up in Malaysia or the US.
The other problem though is DVD regions. Blu-ray isn't an issue; Malaysia is Zone A same as the states. But Malaysia is Region 3 for DVD whereas the US is Region 1. Trying to get that changed might be an exercise in frustration.
Finally, as others have said, you'll have absolutely no warranty support. The world is segregated in to zones, so if you do a personal import then you're on your own.
