I have a 26'' 720p LCD TV and i was wondering if its worth buying a blu ray for it, or should i just get a up-converting DVD player ?

It is all up to you. I have a Sony blu-ray player and i love it! It shows a great improvement upon DVDs and the sound and video quality is out of this world. The blu ray player unfortunately will not be performing its best on a TV like yours since blu rays are 1080pi but still it will have great quality. You should even consider a playstation 3 since the console plays blu-ray and you can go on the internet, play games, etc. In my own personal experience and opinion (if money is not a problem) I would definitely get the blu ray player.

720p tv with a 1080p blu ray player?

Well, I have a 50 inch 720p flat screen and just recently got a 1080p blu ray player. I understand that because the tv is 720p it will not fully detail everything in 1080p but how much of a difference is there going to be? Will it still be better than if I had bought a 720p blu ray player?

You're limited to the "weakest chain in the link," so to speak. So you're only getting 720p, as you said, which would be the case with a 720p or 1080p Blu-ray player. I'm guessing though there's not much difference in price between them, so you may as well get the better one in case you end up hooking it up to a 1080p set in the future. 720p for a 50" tv should be good enough as long as you're sitting probably 8' or more away from it, because even with 1080p you wouldn't be able to resolve the extra detail. There's online calculators and discussion about that topic if you want to check it out further.
